misc_none 12:30 PM  -  2:30 PM Public Meeting - Flipping Colorado Blue in 2018 Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Donald Trump's unprecedented unpopularity is a massive opportunity for Democrats right here in Colorado. A full progressive takeover of Colorado's government is on the table as soon as 2018, but only if we're well-organized and strategic.

This presentation will cover how winning key state races for offices like state senate and attorney general can help make Colorado a national leader in the resistance and protect our state from republican gerrymandering for years to come. We'll also discuss exactly which races grassroots activists can focus on in order to maximize their impact, and provide several immediate, concrete steps you can take in order to help.

Presenter: Mansur Gidfar is a co-founder of Colorado Resistance, a campaign to resist the Trump agenda by electing as many progressives as possible to state and local office. Mansur previously worked as Communications Director at Represent.Us, the country's largest anti-corruption organization, and a Deputy Editor at Upworthy.

On August 21, the shadow of the Moon will sweep a path across the United States, from Oregon to South Carolina, covering the sun for precisely two minutes and 27 seconds in Douglas, Wyoming (times vary depending on where you are within the path). This is the first time since the 1970's that a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States. The shadow moves very quickly and positioning yourself in the line of totality at the correct time and place with the best chance of seeing it under clear conditions is the challenge that eclipse chasers tackle every time the moon's shadow touches the earth!  Astronomer and President of Sirius Travel Inc. Victoria Sahami discusses  his eclipse and the art of eclipse chasing. No registration necessary. There is a limit of 46 people, so first come, first served.

misc_none 12:00 PM  -  1:30 PM WWI and America: A Scholarly Book Discussion with Lt. Colonel Max Frazier Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Join us for a scholarly book discussion commemorating America's entrance into WWI through a reading of Willa Cather's One of Ours. The first 10 registrants receive complimentary copies of the book. Registration opens May 1.

About the book: One of Ours is the 1923 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Willa Cather's about the making of an American soldier. It tells the story of Claude Wheeler, a native Nebraskan, around the turn of the 20th century. The sensitive, restless, and unhappy protagonist has access to his family's fortune, but he refuses to accept it. Alienated from his uncaring father and pious mother and rejected by a wife whose only love is missionary work, Claude is an idealist without ideals. When the United States enters the Great War in 1917, Claude enlists in the army where he finds purpose and meaning in his life.

About the presenter:
Lieutenant Colonel Max Frazier is an Associate Professor of English and Senior Military Faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy.  She studies questions about the role of memory in identity formation, especially how different forms of memory expose fears and limitations about characters’ present-day moments.  She specializes in autobiography and women writing from the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. She teaches English major seminars on topics such as American Literature, American Modernism, novels, food in literature, and minority literature, as well as the core senior capstone course on war literature and speech.

"Technological innovation has outpaced our privacy protections. As a result, our digital footprint can be tracked by the government and corporations in ways that were once unthinkable." ACLU  -- Privacy in the digital age? Find out if it really exists when Dr. Kathleen Hynes of the ACLU discusses privacy in the digital age. Advances in communication technology have improved real time information sharing, but they've also fostered global debate about privacy. As new technologies become more prevalent in our lives, we open ourselves to electronic surveillance and interception. Learn more about this emerging challenge for our society and lives.

About the speaker:
Dr. Hynes is an engaging speaker. After receiving a PhD in Sociology from the University of Denver, she held a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine teaching medical ethics and researching health care delivery systems. She left the University and began her own research business, which she pursued for over two decades. She now works with the ACLU "because there is no better way to ensure social justice than by working to protect, defend and extend the civil rights and civil liberties of all people.
