Based on authentic letters from the era, My Darling Dorothy is a timeless love story that transcends both hard times and the brutal impact of war. The tumult of the Great Depression and World War II provides the background for a novel about three young people; Tommie, Jack and Dorothy, and their challenges, struggles, defeats and triumphs. The hopes and hardships they share are reflected in the letters that they exchange. Are they remnants of lost dreams or the foundation for a joyful future?

Spotlight

In August, our film is Spotlight [R]™ 129 min., winner of multiple awards, including 2016 Academy Award for Best Picture. Spotlight is “the saga of how the Boston Globe won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for uncovering not only decades of sexual abuse by Catholic priests but also systematic maneuvers by the church's Boston archdiocese to shield the more than 70 perpetrators. Honest enough to zing the Globe for neglecting this story for years before it took it on, Spotlight is both damning and inspiring, depressing and heartening. Though it's set more than a decade in the past, it's the All the President's Men for our time.” (excerpted from LA Times review by Kenneth Duran, online 5 Nov 2015)

Belmar Cinephiles is a film series that appeals to every taste and interest. Enjoy independent features, docudramas, documentaries, and topical films that were not widely distributed. If you missed them during their all-too-brief runs at inconveniently located art houses, here's your chance to see them. We mix things up throughout the year with a smattering of more well-known films. All events are free and appropriate for adults.

On August 21, the shadow of the moon will sweep a path across the United States, from Oregon to South Carolina, covering more than 90% of the sun at 11:45 in Denver. Even so, without a special viewer, you won’t even notice the eclipse! With a pinhole eclipse viewer, and with luck, you’ll be able to see the moon’s progress across the sun. Join us in the DIY Lab on Sunday, August 13th from 1:30-2:30pm to make an eclipse viewer and learn how to use it.

Blood on the tracks / Barbara Nickless

It's a night of mystery and intrigue as local author Barbara Nickless discusses Blood on the Tracks. This is the story of a young woman found brutally murdered and the main suspect is the victim's fiancé, a hideously scarred Iraq War vet known as the Burned Man. Railroad Police Special Agent Sydney Rose Parnell is brought in by the Denver Major Crimes unit to help investigate the crime, but can't shake the feeling that large forces are behind this apparent crime of passion. In the depths of an icy winter, Parnell and her canine partner, Clyde, both of whom are haunted by their time in Iraq, descend into the underground world of a savage gang of rail riders. The books will be available for purchase and autographing by the author.
