The shop around the corner

We're watching the classic film Shop Around the Corner. Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 romantic comedy with James Stewart is a perfect way to indulge in a little Christmas-time nostalgia. "Lubitsch demonstrates that romantic comedies, like popcorn, can be enjoyed salty as well as sweet. This is a sharp, elegant, unsentimental picture," says The Guardian review by Peter Bradshaw ( 9 December 2010). Check out the original NY Times movie review for a snapshot in time.

A man called Ove : a novel / Fredrik Backman

Tuesday Night Books@Arvada

We're discussing the novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Blackman. Ove is the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats and unexpected friendships.

A lady's life in the Rocky Mountains

Tuesday nights are when our Conifer Book Group gets together to discuss great reads. This month we're discussing A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird. The letters that make up this volume were first published in 1879. They tell of magnificent, unspoiled landscapes and abundant wildlife, of encounters with rattlesnakes, wolves, pumas and grizzly bears, and her reactions to the volatile passions of the miners and pioneer settlers. A classic account of a truly astounding journey. New members always welcome!

A landmark study conducted by Massachusetts General Hospital found that as little as eight weeks of meditation not only helps people feel calmer, but also changes various areas of the brain, including growth in the areas associated with memory, empathy, sense of self, and stress regulation.

Dr. Kelley Eden explores different ways to bring mindfulness practice into your daily life, such as:
• Relief from stress and anxiety
• Decreased blood pressure and hypertension
• Lower cholesterol levels
• Restful sleep
• And more!

Learn to navigate and recover from stress, and build resilience in all aspects of your being. Leave with self-care tools and new ideas for staying whole and healthy.

Between the world and me

Tuesday nights are when our Conifer Book Group gets together to discuss great reads. This month we're discussing Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In a series of essays, written as a letter to his son, Coates confronts the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives. Thoughtfully exploring personal and historical events, from his time at Howard University to the Civil War, the author poignantly asks and attempts to answer difficult questions that plague modern society. New members always welcome!
