Hispanic Heritage Month: Molina Speaks and Eutimia Cruz Montoya

Don’t miss our series of special performances to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Bring the whole family and enjoy a truly unique show by two amazing local talents, Adrian Molina, a.k.a. Molina Speaks and Eutimia Cruz Montoya.

According to his web bio, Adrian Molina, a.k.a. Molina Speaks "hails from a small gritty working class town you might think of as 'nowhere.' He proves there is Soul everywhere. He balances humble roots and urban grit, street smarts and cultural knowledge, lyrical skills and philosophy." Speaks describes himself as a Chicano/Latino/Indigenous/Mestizo Futurist. Molina Speaks will perform using poetry to express heritage for the voices, stories, and power of youth and communities of color." His performance, which is family-oriented, will last approximately 20-30 minutes.

Eutimia Cruz Montoya is a lineage-raised contemporary curandera, herbalist, licensed acupuncturist, Real Foods Activist, and Food Systems Educator. She is the descendant of New Mexican curanderos (spiritual healers), and learned the healing ways in the home. She grew up participating in indigenous American song, dance and prayer traditions, giving her an inborn connection to, and understanding of Body and Source. Eutimia has a degree in the Anthropological Sciences from Stanford University, a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine, and has been studying and practicing Classical Chinese Medicine since 2004. As a "modern day medicine woman," she travels often to share her healing gifts with the global community, and continue on her healing path as a life-long student of the 'medicine ways' of the world.

The day of the dead is a tradition throughout Latin America to celebrate the life of our deceased loved ones. Families build a shrine (Altar de Muertos) honoring family members that have passed. The Altar has a portrait of the deceased. It is decorated with flowers and candles, and includes favorite food, drink and candy that the deceased's soul will enjoy, on November 2nd El día de los Muertos.

Come and celebrate with their lives with us by decorating a traditional altar dedicated to our loved ones, or make a craft related to the holiday. Consider bringing a portrait of a late family member to include in our collective Altar. The Altar will be displayed in the library on November 2nd, according to custom.

The shop around the corner

We're watching the classic film Shop Around the Corner. Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 romantic comedy with James Stewart is a perfect way to indugle in a little Christmas-time nostalgia. "Lubitsch demonstrates that romantic comedies, like popcorn, can be enjoyed salty as well as sweet. This is a sharp, elegant, unsentimental picture," says The Guardian review by Peter Bradshaw ( 9 December 2010). Check out the original NY Times movie review for a snapshot in time.

Everyone knows that girls are awesome. Sadly though, as girls grow up, they’re far under-represented in science careers, and sometimes subliminally discouraged from even showing interest in these careers. We're doing our part to change this course by offering STEM events just for girls where all ages are invited to play and learn in an open and nonjudgmental atmosphere. The events are led by Bell Middle School’s Girls in iSTEM Club. Space is limited, so please register in advance.

Suitable for: Girls of all ages
