misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Author Event with Dr. Andrew Lam Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Janet Ryan   413-259-3223   ryanj@joneslibrary.org

Dr. Andrew Lam, an author and retinal surgeon at Baystate Medical Center, will be discussing his recently published books, Saving Sight and Two Sons of China. Dr. Lam is currently an Assistant Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.

In Saving Sight, Dr. Lam takes readers into the operating room, revealing the stress and joy of a job that enables him to turn darkness into light, and in which failure can mean blindness. The book reveals an unflinching look at a surgeon’s approach to cataracts, LASIK, macular degeneration and more. Lam also blends his personal story with profiles of ophthalmology’s greatest heroes, innovators whose inventions saved the sight of millions around the world.

Prior to becoming a surgeon, Dr. Lam earned a history degree from Yale. His second book, Two Sons of China, is an historical novel from a forgotten theater of World War II. The book centers on an unlikely friendship between an American soldier and a Chinese Communist guerilla fighter who, despite their deeply held, clashing convictions, form a bond of brotherhood in battle.

Andrew Lam, M.D., was born in Philadelphia and raised in central Illinois. He graduated summa cum laude in history from Yale University, where he studied military history and U.S.-East Asian relations. He then attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by specialty training in ophthalmology and retina surgery at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he also served as a chief resident. He is a partner at New England Retinal Consultants and an attending surgeon at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He resides in Longmeadow, Massachusetts with his wife and four children.

The event is free and open to the public.

Join us for a screening of Reel Bad Arabs:  How Hollywood Vilifies a People.  This documentary explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs in film, offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in U.S. history, and why they matter so much today.  Acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and international policies on their lives.

A facilitated discussion will follow the screening.

Free & open to the public.

misc_none 3:00 PM  -  4:30 PM Obstructing the Steady Flow of the School-to-Prison Pipeline by Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Kim Teresa DuBose     kdubose@smith.edu

The phenomenon of the school-to-prison pipeline features an overrepresentation of children who are racial minorities and recipients of SPED, whose special educational needs go unrecognized and unmet who then become habitual status offenders charged with truancy, ungovernability, elopement, etc.  These children are shuttled into the juvenile justice system for behavioral issues that have traditionally been handled within the school.  Once children are caught up in the juvenile justice system and become known as status offenders, they are more likely to become incarcerated adults.  Many of the children who are status offenders have education-related disabilities, hence their inclusion in SPED programs.  Children with education-related disabilities, such as ADHD, can display challenging behaviors familiar to many teachers.  But what is not as well understood is that trauma –relational, nonrelational, and toxic—can also mask itself as a learning disability.  Cognitive and emotional troubles that transpire in reply to trauma such as difficulty concentrating, dysregulated affect, irritability, and hyperarousal can mimic ADHD symptomatology or frustrate it resulting in diagnostic confusion in recognizing what is PTSD and what is a learning disability.  Children who are trauma victims and survivors have an inability to feel secure, even more so when their home lives are disorganized and the communities are as dysregulated as the children themselves, making it all the more important to create a sanctuary environment within the schools.  Among the goals of the seminar are to explain the necessity of creating trauma-sensitive environments in classrooms that that will benefit children with and without trauma backgrounds and to describe the process of creating such sanctuary.

Does expanding awareness of social differences interest and concern you? By encouraging ourselves to think outside familiar "boxes" and by imagining what it would be like to walk in another's shoes, we challenge each other to do just that!

We read fiction and nonfiction. Some books we've read in 2014 are The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander; Voices of Our Time, by Studs Terkel; Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence, by John Hockenberry; Wonder, by R. J. Palacio; The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green; and Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams, by Alfred Lubrano.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Obstructing the Steady Flow of the School-to-Prison Pipeline by Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Join us for a presentation by naturalist and educator John Root, who will share a power point presentation that celebrates the intricacy and enchanting beauty of our native and naturalized flora. Audiences learn distinguishing characteristics of the major plant families as a basis for field identification. The survival value of these plants’ unique adaptations in accomplishing such essential functions as photosynthesis, pollination, and seed dispersal is also discussed.

Questions and comments are welcome throughout the presentation, and illustrated pamphlets with descriptions of plant families, informative websites, and a bibliography for further study are offered to participants.

Plants will be available for purchase.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.  For more information, visit www.massculturalcouncil.org.

You can apply Permaculture Design to any backyard, big or small, sunny or shady. Ashley Schenk uses examples from his projects around the Pioneer Valley to show how you can use Permaculture Design to grow food, nourish a healthy ecosystem, and build a deeper relationship with your land. His explanation of the design process, specific examples, and knowledge of design strategies helps you focus in on your goals, learn useful strategies, and creatively problem-solve in your landscape.

Ashley Schenk has seven years of experience as a natural builder and permaculture designer. He co-founded  Broadfork Permaculture, a permaculture landscaping cooperative, and has been working throughout Franklin and Hampshire Counties designing and implementing healthy backyard landscapes.
