Know Your Adversary:  The New Negotiating Playbook

The subject of Alan Wheelock’s presentation is "Know Your Adversary: The New Negotiating Playbook." The content of this talk has proven to be quite useful to anyone who is negotiating contracts, buying or selling products and services, running a small business, or simply negotiating with bosses or family members.

The presentation is approximately 20 minutes in length. Alan delivers the content in a style that is humorous, entertaining and effective. In this speech, Alan discusses the most common negotiating styles that you are likely to encounter on the other side of the table, and how to effectively “improvise, adapt, and overcome” in each situation.

Join us for the opening reception for September's display in the Jones Library atrium and a screening of the documentary Fletcher Steele and Naumkeag, which explores the design of Naumkeag in Stockbridge, one of the seven Country Place-era landscapes featured in the exhibition.  Robin Karson, the executive director of LALH and author of the exhibition (and the book of the same title), will give a short talk about the Country Place era in landscape architecture after the screening.

A Genius for Place: American Landscapes of the Country Place Era is a panel exhibition created by the Library of American Landscape History (LALH). A narrative by landscape historian Robin Karson and photographs by Carol Betsch trace the development of an important movement in American landscape design through seven country estate landscapes designed between 1905 and 1950. LALH, which is based on Amherst, fosters understanding of the fine art of landscape architecture and appreciation for North America’s richly varied landscape heritage through its  books, exhibitions, and online resources.

Fletcher Steele and Naumkeag explores the work of landscape architect Fletcher Steele and his client Mabel Choate in creating the new gardens for Naumkeag, the Choate family summer estate in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, between 1926 and 1955.

Just War vs. Jihad: Understanding Armed Struggle in the Islamic Context?

Critics of Islam often make the case that Muslims are bound by Qur’anic injunction to offensively and violently wage jihad against non-Muslims. Concurrently, groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are openly calling upon Muslims to engage in jihad to launch a new-age Islamic caliphate in the Middle East.

So what exactly is jihad, and what does the term denote?

Individual struggle, armed struggle, or “holy war”?

In this event - the 4th in our Bridging Muslim-Non-Muslim Divides Series - Critical Connections and Karuna Center for Peacebuilding invite you to attend a panel discussion that will place the concept of jihad in its appropriate historical, religious, legal, and social context and explain how the term has been widely understood and misunderstood up until the present day.

Featuring Professor Natana J. DeLong-Bas (Boston College) and Professor Sohail Hashmi (Mount Holyoke College).

Dr. Natana J. DeLong-Bas is a part-time faculty member in the Department of Theology at Boston College. She is the author of several books: with John L. Esposito, Women in Muslim Family Law(2001); Notable Muslims: Profiles of Muslim Builders of World Civilization and Culture (2007); Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad (2008); and Jihad for Islam: The Struggle for the Future of Saudi Arabia (2010). She has also written numerous book chapters and encyclopedia articles focusing on Saudi Arabia, Wahhabism, Islamic thought and history, Islam and politics, and contemporary jihadism, including al-Qa'ida. A consultant to several international corporations, governments, and the media, Dr. DeLong-Bas is currently working with the King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives in Saudi Arabia and IDC Publishers in the Netherlands to publish portions of the Foundation's historical manuscript holdings related to the history and development of Islam from the eighteenth century through the twentieth century.

Dr. Sohail Hashmi is Professor of International Relations and the Alumnae Foundation Chair in the Social Sciences at Mount Holyoke College. He was among the earliest scholars to specialize in ethics and international relations, which developed as an interdisciplinary field during the 1980s and 1990s. Dr. Hashmi has published on a range of topics in Islamic ethics and political theory, including sovereignty, humanitarian intervention, tolerance, civil society, and the theory of jihad. At Mount Holyoke, where he has taught since 1994, Dr. Hashmi offers a wide variety of classes, including introductory courses in international relations and Middle East politics, and seminars such as Ethics and International Relations, Just War and Jihad: Comparative Ethics of War and Peace, and Political Islam. In 2005, he was awarded a Carnegie Scholars Fellowship by the Carnegie Corporation of New York to study Muslim reactions to the development of international law. Dr. Hashmi lectures frequently to audiences around the country on topics relating to Islam in world politics.

The Forgiveness Project:  a multi-venue, multi-arts exploration on the theme of forgiveness throughout the Pioneer Valley.
Join us in September for Four Sundays of Forgiveness at the Jones Library, with film & conversations on the subject of Forgiveness.

Join us for a screening of The Imam & the Pastor and An African Answer.  These two shorter, related documentaries about a Muslim cleric and a Christian pastor in Nigeria are not about religion, but about opening to one another across great divides.  Both men have deep hatred for each other, until they begin to listen to each other, transforming their relationship and inspiring the formation of a peace institute.

The Forgiveness Project, a year-long exploration throughout the Pioneer Valley on the theme of Forgiveness through community conversations and the arts, invites Amherst to read together Desmond Tutu's new book The Book of Forgiving throughout the month of September.  Several copies are available to check out. There will be a community-wide conversation time of sharing questions, challenges, thoughts and feelings on this complex subject on Sunday, September 28.
