    Contact: Janet Ryan   413-259-3223   ryanj@joneslibrary.org

This year marks the centennial of the beginning of World War One, and this program presented by Barry Deitz will explore some of the poetry of that time.  It will trace the lives of several writers through the war, their experiences good and bad, and the effect of the war on those who survived.  The program also will look at the history of the war and its influence on the literature and culture of the era, weaving poetry, biography,  and history into a story of struggle and tragedy that swept away forever the old world of the 19th Century.  And it was the birth - in hope, glory and blood - of the Twentieth.

Free & open to the public.

This program is offered as a part of the town programming for Amherst's 2nd Annual Poetry Festival.  For more information about the festival, visit:

The Forgiveness Project:  a multi-venue, multi-arts exploration on the theme of forgiveness throughout the Pioneer Valley.
Join us in September for Four Sundays of Forgiveness at the Jones Library, with film & conversations on the subject of Forgiveness.

Join us for a screening of The Imam & the Pastor and An African Answer.  These two shorter, related documentaries about a Muslim cleric and a Christian pastor in Nigeria are not about religion, but about opening to one another across great divides.  Both men have deep hatred for each other, until they begin to listen to each other, transforming their relationship and inspiring the formation of a peace institute.

Laura Quilter is a librarian and information policy lawyer.  Her practice has included First Amendment, privacy, media, and intellectual property.  At UMass, she principally helps campus members with copyright and open access issues.  Laura speaks and teaches frequently, including teaching "Intellectual Freedom" to library science students.

Levellers Press will mark the launch of its groundbreaking new nonfiction book, Kissability: People with Disabilities Talk About Sex, Love, and Relationships, with a reading by the author, Katherine Duke.

After the reading, the author will take questions from the audience and sign copies of the book. The venue is wheelchair-accessible, and refreshments will be served.

Duke, a writer and editor living in Amherst, began working on Kissability in 2007, inspired by her own experiences looking for love as a young adult wheelchair user.  Based on a questionnaire sent to volunteer respondants, Duke crafted the Kissability book, whose 16 chapters not only tell the personal stories of these individuals but also present their diverse perspectives on such broader topics as interpersonal communication, adolescent experiences and online dating. By turns irreverent, angry, heartbreaking and hopeful, their words interweave to highlight the social and emotional complexities that arise out of disability—and out of the human condition.

Free & open to the public.

Co-sponsored by Levellers Press and the Jones Library.

Join us for an evening with local author Michael Ponsor, as he reads from his award-winning thriller, The Hanging Judge.  This book was selected as one of the Must-Read titles at the 2014 Massachusetts Book Awards.

The Hanging Judge is a thriller set in Western Massachusetts.  The 2014 Massachusetts Book Awards Must-Read Book list describes the novel like this:

A drug dealer and a hockey mom/nurse are killed in drive-by shooting in Holyoke, and a rival gang member is arrested as the prime suspect.  When the case is moved to federal court so that the prosecuters can seek the death penalty, a judge who has served only two years on the bench must preside over his trial.  With a colorful cast of primary and secondary characters, this legal thriller is told from the unique perspective of the presiding judge and is based on the author's own experience.

Michael Ponsor graduated from Harvard, received a Rhodes Scholarship, and studied for two years at Pembroke College, Oxford. After taking his law degree from Yale and clerking in federal court in Boston, he began his legal career, specializing in criminal defense. He moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1978, where he practiced as a trial attorney in his own firm until his appointment in 1984 as a US magistrate judge in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed him a life-tenured US district judge. From 2000 to 2001, he presided over a five-month death penalty trial, the first in Massachusetts in over fifty years. Judge Ponsor continues to serve as a senior US district judge in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, Western Division, with responsibility for federal criminal and civil cases in the four counties of western Massachusetts. The Hanging Judge is his first novel.

Free & open to the public.

Title: Wham! Bam! Islam!: Movie Screening and Dialogue

Extremist groups within the Muslim world have increasingly turned to popular media to spread their gospel of radicalism.  Coverage of these groups' campaigns to recruit young minds through flashy Internet campaigns and YouTube videos has dominated the airwaves at the expense of more moderate individuals whose devotion to pluralism and democracy goes largely unnoticed by the mainstream media.  In this event - the fifth in our Bridging Muslim/non-Muslim Divides series, join Karuna Center and Critical Connections for a showing of the film Wham! Bam! Islam! to learn about one Kuwaiti-Muslim's innovative efforts to best the radicals at their own game using the most unlikely of social mediums - comic books.  The movie screening will be followed by a dialogue on key themes raised by the documentary.  Delicious, hot buttery popcorn and a range of drinks options will be provided free of charge to all who attend.

In this PBS Indies/Independent Lens production, Kuwaiti psychologist and comic-book aficionado Dr. Naif al-Mutawa partners with the best graphic artists in the business to design a children’s comic book series based on the 99 virtues of Allah.  Director Issac Solotaroff follows Dr. al-Mutawa and his animation team as they endeavor to design and market a product that the Muslim world’s most conservative opinion leaders can get behind.  Wham! Bam! Islam! provides viewers with a unique opportunity to experience the diversity of thought, opinion and popular culture in the Muslim world as viewed through the eyes of a devout Arab-Muslim struggling to reclaim Islamic values as a force for peace and pluralism in a troubled region.

Does expanding awareness of social differences interest and concern you? By encouraging ourselves to think outside familiar "boxes" and by imagining what it would be like to walk in another's shoes, we challenge each other to do just that!

We read fiction and nonfiction. Some books we've read in 2014 are The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander; Voices of Our Time, by Studs Terkel; Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence, by John Hockenberry; Wonder, by R. J. Palacio; The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green; and Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams, by Alfred Lubrano.
