Does expanding awareness of social differences interest and concern you? By encouraging ourselves to think outside familiar "boxes" and by imagining what it would be like to walk in another's shoes, we challenge each other to do just that!

We read fiction and nonfiction. Some books we've read in 2014 are The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander; Voices of Our Time, by Studs Terkel; Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence, by John Hockenberry; Wonder, by R. J. Palacio; The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green; and Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams, by Alfred Lubrano.

Movie Poster

Today's baseball movie is A League of Their Own, a film by Columbia Pictures released in 1992.  The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II.  The movie begins with agents scouring the country to find women who could play ball, and bringing the prospective players to Chicago to try out for the teams being formed.  And baseball season continues from there!

The film is rated PG.

Free & open to the public.

R.K. "Chip" Simpson, author of the short story collection Webley .45 and Other Short Stories, talks about the short story writing process, from the initial idea to publication.

Where do the stories come from?  How must these stories, often inspired by real life, be reorganized or recast to be entertaining or worthwhile?   What is the role of imagination and creativity in structuring a short story?  These questions, and many more are answered as we look at the short story writing process.

Today's movie is about real-life heroes.  Invictus is a film by Warner Bros. released in 2009.  The film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team to help unite their country. Believing he can bring his racially and economically divided country together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies his underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

This film is rated PG13.

Movie Poster

Today's baseball movie is Field of Dreams, a film from 1989 by Universal Pictures.  "If you build it, he will come." That's the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his   cornfield. At first, "he" seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson, who materializes on the ball field and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is "Ease his pain." He realizes that his ball field has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives.

Join us for this free workshop, offered by The Garden: A Center for Grieving Children and Teens, a program of Cooley- Dickinson VNA & Hospice, which provides support to grieving young people and their families.

This workshop is geared towards adult caregivers and community members interested in learning how to initiate a gentle conversation about death, dying, and grief with youth. The purpose of this workshop is to use children’s literature as an effective tool in talking to children about these difficult topics. Participants will be able to join in a guided conversation about grief and will discover resources in various mediums that can be utilized to facilitate these important conversations.

We welcome family, friends, and loved ones in the life of a grieving young person, as well as anyone interested in grief work with children.  For more information about Grief Through Story and/or to find out more about The Garden, please contact Shelly Bathe Lenn, Director at 413-582 5312

    Contact: Janet Ryan   413/ 259-3223   ryanj@joneslibrary.org

The Mandolin Orchestra of Western Mass is the first of its kind in over 100 years.  Around the end of the 19th century, there were literally dozens of mandolin orchestras all over Massachusetts and New England.  Every College and University had one, notably orchestras at Smith College, Amherst College and Mt Holyoke College.  That all changed with the dawning of the 20th Century.

We are an ensemble consisting of 5-25 classically-trained musicians, many of us are students, studying the music of 15th - 19th Century Europe!  Performances include works by modern Massachusetts composers and may include musicians from Rhode Island's L'Esperance Mandolin Ensemble and Northampton's Mandolin Paradiso.  Join us for a fun concert and learn a little about the history of mandolins in Western Massachusetts!

Free & open to the public.

Kandie Carl presents a look at the fashion, life, and etiquette of the Victorian era.  While dressing in actual vintage and authentically reproduced undergarments, clothing and accessories, Kandie Carle adds humor, history and intriguing anecdotes about fashion, home life and etiquette of men and women during this era.  The Victorian Lady program brings to light some of the differences, as well as some of the similarities, between us and our Victorian ancestors. During this entertaining and educational program, we will enjoy a refreshing view of a magnificent era in history.

Kandie Carl has been working in the theatre since 1980 as an actress, dancer, and singer throughout the U.S. and abroad, covering the spectrum from Shakespeare to musical comedy.   Her love of history, years of research, and experience as a performer have culminated in the creation of this one-woman show, Kandie Carle - Victorian Lady . Since 1996, she has been touring with this program and has entertained audiences throughout New England and beyond.

Refreshments will be served.

    Contact: Janet Ryan   413/259-3223   ryanj@joneslibrary.org

May Alcott was one of many women who took art classes in Boston after the Civil War, then painted in Paris. This illustrated talk will feature May and other women whose work never found its way to museum walls, as well as one who did: Mary Cassatt, May's American friend in Paris. What inspired May to keep painting when her work received limited acclaim? What issues of rivalry did she face with her sister, Louisa, whose novel Little Women swiftly became a best seller? In this illustrated talk, Jeannine Atkins will draw from what she learned writing Little Women in Blue: A Novel of May Alcott to explore why the work of artists who push past being amateurs but never reach the level of greatness matter. What can they teach us about ways to balance creative work, family, and love today?

Jeannine Atkins' debut novel for adults is Little Women in Blue.  She is the author of several books for young readers, including Borrowed Names:  Poems about Laura Ingalls Wilder, Madam C.J. Walker, Marie Curie, and their Daughters.  She is an adjunct professor at Simmons College and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Free & open to the public.
