Join us for a screening of "White Like Me:  Race, Racisim & White Privilege in American", a documentary based on the work of acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise.  It explores race and racism in the U.S. through the lens of whiteness and white privilege. Wise offers a fascinating look back at the race-based white entitlement programs that built the American middle class, and argues that our failure as a society to come to terms with this legacy of white privilege continues to perpetuate racial inequality and race-driven political resentments today.

A facilitated discussion will follow the screening.

Free & open to the public.

Join us for a screening of Latinos Beyond Reel:  Challenging a Media Stereotype, a documentary which examines how US news and entertainment media portray -- and do not portray -- Latinos.  The film challenges viewers to think critically about the wide-ranging effects of these media stereotypes, and to envision alternative representations and models of production more capable of capturing the humanity and diversity of real Latinos.

A facilitated discussion will follow the screening.

“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is a well known holiday carol, whose familiar verses and repetitions seem to conjure an extended, jolly English holiday party.  Yet some scholars think the lyrics hold deeper symbolic meaning and tell a coded story.  Dr. Thomas Bernard will lead us on an historical exploration of the possible hidden meanings behind these verses.

Dr. Thomas Bernard is a professor emeritus of psychology at Springfield College.  Having become intrigued by the lyrics of the carol, he began to research the words, their meanings, and the evolution of the song from its earliest manuscript.   He is the author of a book on this project, The Twelve Days of Christmas:  The Mystery and the Meaning, published by University Press Division of St. Charles Place.

Does expanding awareness of social differences interest and concern you? By encouraging ourselves to think outside familiar "boxes" and by imagining what it would be like to walk in another's shoes, we challenge each other to do just that!

We read fiction and nonfiction. Some books we've read in 2014 are The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander; Voices of Our Time, by Studs Terkel; Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs, and Declarations of Independence, by John Hockenberry; Wonder, by R. J. Palacio; The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green; and Limbo: Blue-Collar Roots, White-Collar Dreams, by Alfred Lubrano.
