SLO NOONTIME TOASTMASTERS. Most people would rather die than give a speech, according to a survey reported in The Book of Lists. Fear of public speaking outranked the fear of death by a two-to-one margin! Unrealistic as this may seem, the fact remains that while many people lack the training and stamina to effectively deliver a clear thought, today’s fast-paced, technological world is in desperate need of good communicators and leaders. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues – especially in a competitive job market. Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. One local club, Noontime Toastmasters Club of San Luis Obispo has been helping members to build self confidence and communication and leadership skills since June 1, 1983. The group has 23 members and meets every 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesday at First American Title "The Community Room" on the corner of Pacific and Morro, downtown San Luis Obispo from noon to 1PM. The club's website is http://sanluistoastmasters.freetoasthost.ws/. Guests are not required to speak, but are welcome to do so. Please contact for more information Tawnee Hosick, VP of Membership, at tawnee.hosick@ubs.com or call Tawnee at 805-405-5197. SLO Noontime Toastmasters

    Contact: maurice lord   805 969-5637   mplord@aol.com
Genesis West, in their most ambitious production to date, presents the most outrageously fun play by the most controversial living Irish playwright. The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh won the 2003 Olivier Award for Best Comedy, a 2006 Obie award for Best Playwriting and a Tony nomination for best play. In the play a sadistic rogue enforcer of an I.R.A. splinter group becomes emotionally unglued when his only friend in the world is killed - his cat. He loves his pet more than life itself and someone is going to pay. McDonagh creatively combines comedy with carnage creating a brilliant satire on terrorism and a biting commentary on the self-perpetuating spirals of violence that occur throughout our world.

To support this effort Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry Tailors, are co-hosting a fundraiser and inviting everyone to join them in making contributions to the SLO Food Bank. Albert’s Florist is offering a chance to win a monthly flower arrangement for a year and Rose and Henry Tailors is offering one year tailoring service up to $100 in value, and other prizes as an incentive for you to join in this fund raising effort. Join in celebrating Albert’s Florist, 60 years of spirited service, helping people to express gratitude and love with flowers to highlight life’s memories. Devoted to quality when creating floral expressions, "Simple or complex-large or small Albert's Florist will do it all!" Rose and Henry Tailors has been providing quality service in tailoring your wardrobe for your style of living for 42 years. To get more information about this fundraising event you can call Albert’s Florist at 543-0567. You can also contact SLO Food Bank directly to make your contributions 238-4664.

Toot Toot…SLO Food Bank! While working as a florist I have made so many beautiful things. Every now and then I create something so lovely I get lost in admiration of what has been created. After decades as a florist I have an assurance that we aren’t alone. Out of nowhere will come a requested tribute to celebrate the life of someone departed and I keep this in mind and heart…as I design a piece of comfort. In my early years I would call out to everyone “Look what I helped create” and they would laugh and say I was tooting my own horn, but then when they saw what I made they would say “Toot Toot” so now I just say “Toot Toot”. I have learned that there is no need to toot my own horn, but sometimes it just feels good to call attention to something wonderful and toot our horns together. This is one of those occasions…Toot Toot!

This fund-raiser for SLO Food Bank is a fine example of how the folks at Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry Tailors, enjoy helping people. If you know them you will agree this is great way to raise awareness and funds for SLO Food Bank and if you don’t know them yet this is a wonderful opportunity to meet Rose and her daughter Katherine from Rose and Henry Tailors, and Tzolig and Barkev Abadjian Rose’s daughter and son-in-law from Albert’s Florist. The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce will perform a “Ribbon Cutting Ceremony” at 4:30 so all Chamber Members are encouraged to come join in celebrating a little early. They hope you will make some time to visit Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry for their SLO Food Bank fund-raiser…at their new location Friday, November 20th at 1357 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Come and enjoy authentic Armenian food, see the beautiful Christmas and Holiday floral gift ideas, get a chance to win great prizes and at the same time help raise support for SLO food Bank.

Contact: Wildling Art Museum   805-688-1082   info@wildlingmuseum.org
The Wildling Art Museum's fall exhibition, curated by photographer Scott McClaine, is an artistic exploration and celebration of the majesty and subtlety of California's Southern Sierra Nevada mountain range. Offering the unique artistic perspectives of four artists working in different media, the exhibition will feature Japanese-style woodcut prints by Tom Killion, the pen, pencil, and lithographic line drawings of Matthew Rangel, photographic panoramas by Jeff Jones, and landscape and wildlife oil paintings by Zenaida Mott. Each of these accomplished artists has discovered the emotional bond between their reverence for the Sierra Nevada range and their personal commitment to their art. Their work speaks to the importance of the Sierra Nevadas in the history of California and the lives of Californians, the dominant beauty of the landscape and fragility of the wildlife, and the urgent need for awareness and preservation. The Wildling Art Museum is open Wed-Sun; 11am-5pm. There is a suggested $3.00 donation. Wildling Art Museum

misc_none Bloom Projects: Mitchell Wright, The Reconstruction Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Kimberly Hahn   805-965-5373   press@sbcaf.org
Wright’s drawings and paintings contemplate the romantic, evoking strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience and placing emphasis on trepidation, horror, and awe. In his work, one can see inspirations from varied sources including art history (Caspar David Friedrich and Francisco Goya), literature (William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor), and music (Neil Young). Mitchell Wright’s latest paintings were inspired by William Faulkner’s short story, Barn Burning. Relating this text to his own personal history, Wright creates images to understand how one’s sense of things is guided by their past and the importance of understanding when this is happening. This subject matter of buildings subsumed by flames has a particularly haunting and poignant read in the context of recent Santa Barbara fires and the tragedies that ensued.

Wright was born in Winona, Mississippi (1976). Solo exhibitions include Wishful Thinking, LAS Gallery, Phoenix, AZ (2008); You, Me., White Columns, New York, NY (2006); and Daydreaming is Squeezing Night Into Day, Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. In addition, Wright has participated in group shows such as The Merits of Silence, Gallery Min Min, Tokyo, JP (2008); The Object Direct, Heskin Contemporary, New York, NY (2008); Sonotube, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA (2007).

This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to Brush & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA; The Presidio Motel, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall and Associates, Santa Barbara, CA. about the BLOOM PROJECTS series. http://www.sbcaf.org/main.html

This exhibition will feature performance-based video works that explore the notion of the absurd. Based loosely on non sequitur Dadaist techniques and surrealist-inspired writings, this exhibition explores absurdity in its many meanings. In many instances, these artists employ theatrical techniques by utilizing crudely-made props, costumes, and flimsy sets. By engaging dark and oftentimes ironic humor in absurd or impossible scenarios, these artists expose the underlying brutality, dehumanization, fears and taboos of American society. http://www.sbcaf.org/main.html

From now until December 31 individual donations to the North County's Women's Shelter will be twice as powerful thanks to a generous offer from Lance and Nina Holt. The couple has offered to match donations to the North County's Shelter Program up to $10,000. "Any funds sent to us will now do twice the work, provide twice the services, buy twice as much food and more," said Eileen Allan, executive director. The North County Women's Shelter maintains two 24-hour shelters in the north county for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Shelter services include counseling, case management, food, medical care, clothing, transportation, assistance with restraining orders and more at no cost to the families. The Shelter Program is partially funded by county, state, and federal grants. Each grantor requires a show of local support as requirement of receiving funds. Fundraising efforts not only help provide direct services, but also meet this requirement. "Those donations of money are leveraged to ensure that we get the financial aid needed to provide two safe houses and the related services such as assistance with temporary restraining orders, individual and group counseling, on-campus school counseling, food, toiletries and more," Allan said. "The community has been extremely supportive of our cause during my 17 years with the agency," Allan said, adding, "It is heart warming to know that this community is also very concerned with the incidents of domestic violence and its impact on not only the adult victims, but the innocent children too. Sixty percent of our shelter residents are children." The agency's current board of directors are; Robert Burton, Captain Paso Robles Police Department, Jennifer Hayner, Attorney at Law, Diane Mandala, Real Estate Broker Associate, San Marquis, Retired Financial Executive, Robin Weckerly, Commander Sheriff's Department, Brandon Yakush, Forensic Psychologist and Carol Kiessig, Retired Business Owner.

'Exciting Announcements' Scheduled for Morro Bay Friends Of the Library Annual Board of Directors Election Meeting.

The Morro Bay Friends of the Library, which has been actively supporting the Morro Bay Public Library for more than 25 years, will review accomplishments of the past year and discuss significant needs--especially at this time of reductions in financial support of libraries--and challenges in the near future on Friday, Nov. 20, starting at 11:30 a.m. when the Friends hold their annual Board of Directors elections. The meeting will be in the Library Room of the Library, 625 Harbor Street. The just-announced retirement of Jude Sanner Long, Morro Bay's popular, long-time librarian, is sure to be a topic of discussion at the gathering, although her service of nearly 35 years with the San Luis Obispo County Library System will be marked with a formal celebration on Jan. 24 at the library.

The meeting and program is open to the public and will include a free continental lunch on a first come, first served basis. The more than 300 Friends members are urged to attend to vote for officers. A quorum of members is needed to elect officers of the board. "Some very exciting announcements" will be made at the meeting, Friends president Karen Robert (cq) said in the organization's fall, 2009, newsletter. The continental lunch will be followed by a program featuring two Morro Bay chefs, Kirk Sowell of Frankie & Lola's restaurant and Shawn Washburn of Shawn's on Main. Participants will have the opportunity to taste some of their cuisine as well as learn about their experiences, behind the scenes stories, mishaps, having fun cooking, tricks of success with food, and more. "If you have never come to a Friends meeting before, or if it has been a while since you have attended one, we really want you to come to this one!" Robert said of Friends members. The support that Friends provides for the library is invaluable, and, as Robert noted, "It only takes one person to make a difference--and that person could be you."

Friends of the Library hosts book discussion groups on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, discussions on inspirational topics on the second Wednesday and readings by local authors and special presentations toward a celebration and appreciation of literature on most fourth Wednesdays. John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author, who chronicled so many classic stories about California and its people, will be the topic of discussion on Nov.18 (his book "Travels with Charley In Search of America"). More details are available at http://www.morrobayfriendsoflibrary.org/.

Friends also holds regular book sales to raise funds for the library (Friends members are allowed access to the sales one hour prior to regular openings), provide volunteers to support library services and operations, publishes a newsletter distributed throughout the community four times a year, and builds and maintains awareness of library needs and services throughout the community.     Contact: Steve Kinsey   (805) 781-1215   skinsey@slolibrary.org
The San Luis Obispo Library offers the opportunity to explore the stark and seductive world of film noir in a new film series. Film noir is a genre of Hollywood crime dramas produced from the 1930s to the 1950s. There will be a free screening of one film in the San Luis Obispo Library Community Room each month from November through April. Dates and times are: • Saturday, November 21st, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. • Saturday, December 19th, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. • Wednesday, January 13th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Wednesday, February 10th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Wednesday, March 10th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. • Wednesday, April 14th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

After each screening, a local film expert will lead a discussion. Guest moderators include: • Bob Whiteford and Jim Dee from KCBX Radio’s “Take Two” • Bryce Wilson, film columnist for New Times • Sarah Linn, film columnist for The Tribune • Phil May, teacher of film appreciation at Cuesta College. “I came up with the idea for this film series while watching a few old film noir movies and realized how well they stand up today,” said Audio-Visual Librarian Steve Kinsey. “They’re not your typical 1940s and ‘50s popular films. They are more realistic in their depictions of society which was born from the cynicism of the post-war era. So, I wanted to find a way to share these with the local film fans who may not have seen these great films before.” The film noir series is free and no reservations are required.

Central Coast artists reflect on the holiday season and what matters most. All works must be 16" x 16" or smaller and under $500. What Really Matters by Petra Rockwell Patterson November 2009. It matters that we learn the difference between what to hold close and what to let go. It matters how we ease into the day, nodding our heads in gratitude. It matters that we right ourselves, find our inner compass and keep a steady hand on the tiller. It matters that we lift our heads and notice who and what needs tending. It matters that we look to a higher power and welcome a relationship. It matters that we dig, polish our talents and share them with others. It matters that we are resilient, forgiving of ourselves and others, ready to start fresh each day. It matters that we are flexible, can bend and stretch and reach. It matters that we celebrate the joy, fill a room with laughter. It matters that we live in the present, showering those that matter to us with love. It matters that we embrace our differences, and nurture the best in one another. Every smile, every gentle touch, every one matters. http://www.studiosonthepark.org

Superintendent Bill Cirone and Tina Fanucchi share the 2009 Leadership in the Arts Award from the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. For further information contact: Ginny Brush, 805.568-3992 or gbrush@co.santa-barbara.ca.us or Linda Gardy at 805.568-3990 or gardy@co.santa-barbara.ca.us. The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission’s announcement of this year’s Leadership in the Arts Award will take place at a festive celebration and holiday gathering in the Channing Peake Gallery during 1st Thursday in Downtown Santa Barbara on December 3rd. Chair Barbara Burger will present the award on behalf of the Arts Commission to long-time arts education advocates Bill Cirone, County Superintendent of Schools and Tina Fanucchi, past Director of the Public Education Foundation. Recognizing recent trends in decreasing resources and access to arts education in our public schools, the Arts Commission wanted to highlight the valuable role that Arts Education plays in the lives of students enhancing both personal and academic success; and recognize two individuals that have done so much to advocate and engage the community in efforts to support and sustain arts in our public schools. Second District Supervisor Janet Wolf who will be presenting both recipients with a Proclamation from the Santa Barbara County the Board of Supervisors at the December 1st meeting in Santa Barbara praised Cirone stating “I’ve known Bill for over 15 years and he is truly one of the most ardent advocates for arts education in our schools. He is most deserving of this honor.” When notified of the recognition, Ms. Fanucchi had this to say about the Art Commission’s award, “Although this is designed to be an individual award, I want to acknowledge the consistent support of those in our community who recognize that music education in our schools is vital to the success of our students. The vision of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, donors, students, teachers and fiercely dedicated volunteers all share in the success of Keep the Beat can feel honored to know that their commitment is recognized and valued. I hope the inspiration of this award, and the spirit in which it is given, encourages the continued support of arts education.” Superintendent Cirone has been an articulate spokesperson for the value of the arts in education at the county level and at the state level where he has served as Chair of the California Arts Task Force. “I have long been a passionate believer in the value of the arts as an essential element of a well-rounded education; the benefits to young people are immeasurable in so many critical areas, commented Superintendent of Schools Cirone. “The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission serves such a vital role in helping preserve and promote the arts, and to be honored by the commission, which I respect and admire so highly, is meaningful and humbling beyond words.” Ginny Brush, Executive Director of the Arts Commission points out that “Over the years, the Leadership in Arts award has given the Arts Commission an opportunity to shine a light on great achievements realized by exemplary citizens who through their vision, commitment, and dedication continue to sustain our regional culture and increase access to arts for the residents of Santa Barbara County.” The Leadership in the Arts Award was established in 2006 as an annual award to honor and recognize individuals or organizations that have made a significant impact on the arts and culture of our region through innovative thinking and exemplary commitment to promoting, sustaining, and advancing our quality of life through the Arts. Second District Supervisor Susan Rose was the first recipient of the award. Since then the annual award has gone to Santa Maria artist, arts educator and long-time arts advocate Nat Fast in 2007 and to Joe and Margie Talaugon, long-time Guadalupe residents for their commitment, community involvement and support for art and cultural activities through their development of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts & Education Center that opened its doors in 2002. The Arts Commission established in 1977 is a 15-member panel with three representatives appointed by each of the five County District Supervisors.

Quebec-born artist Julie Lequin explores the construction of identity through role-playing and props, oftentimes with humorous results. Her work has a quirky Canadian/SoCal sensibility that transforms the illusory film staples of the prop, costume, voiceover, and fake hair, into unconvincing parodies. A participant in CAF’s exhibition Unusual Behavior, Lequin will present a performance related to her newest video work in progress Top 30 (en 30 temps), which traces each year of the artist’s life in narrative form – a project resulting from thoughts of turning 30 while traversing the art world with a suitcase in hand. http://www.sbcaf.org/

The University Singers will perform three works, all written by American composers, amongst them David N. Johnson's beautiful work, "A New Christmas Carol."

With more than 100 singers combined, PolyPhonics and The University Singers will join together to perform works by Eric Whitacre and Giovanni Gabrieli, as well as the hauntingly beautiful medieval hymn, "Personent Hodie."

The Cal Poly Brass will dazzle the audience with beautiful performances of two great works by Johann Sebastian Bach.

In addition to the large choirs, smaller groups including the Early Music Ensemble, Men and Women in Barbershop, and Take It SLO will create a cameo of holiday treats.

The audience will have the opportunity to join in a carol sing-a-long.

The evening culminates in the traditional singing of Malcolm Sargent's arrangement of "Silent Night."

Tickets are $10 students, $16 and $19 seniors, $17 and $20 general and are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787).

“Day-To-Day Buddhism” With Dharma Teacher Khedrup Zangmo - This meditation practice and teaching will focus on bringing our practice into our lives and world. Buddhism offers many methods to relieve suffering in our own lives and in the lives of others. Nobody wants to suffer and everyone wants to be happy. Learning to meditate with trained guidance can ease our suffering and truly transform our lives. Learning to take these experiences out in the world truly transforms us and the world we live in. We will discuss taking our sitting and other practices into our daily lives and finding the space in our busy lives for practice. Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France . After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA . At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center. http://www.bodhipath.org/slo/
