Wright’s drawings and paintings contemplate the romantic, evoking strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience and placing emphasis on trepidation, horror, and awe. In his work, one can see inspirations from varied sources including art history (Caspar David Friedrich and Francisco Goya), literature (William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor), and music (Neil Young). Mitchell Wright’s latest paintings were inspired by William Faulkner’s short story, Barn Burning. Relating this text to his own personal history, Wright creates images to understand how one’s sense of things is guided by their past and the importance of understanding when this is happening. This subject matter of buildings subsumed by flames has a particularly haunting and poignant read in the context of recent Santa Barbara fires and the tragedies that ensued.
Wright was born in Winona, Mississippi (1976). Solo exhibitions include Wishful Thinking, LAS Gallery, Phoenix, AZ (2008); You, Me., White Columns, New York, NY (2006); and Daydreaming is Squeezing Night Into Day, Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. In addition, Wright has participated in group shows such as The Merits of Silence, Gallery Min Min, Tokyo, JP (2008); The Object Direct, Heskin Contemporary, New York, NY (2008); Sonotube, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA (2007).
This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of
the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to Brush & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA; The Presidio Motel, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall and Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.

This exhibition will feature performance-based video works that explore the notion of the absurd. Based loosely on non sequitur Dadaist techniques and surrealist-inspired writings, this exhibition explores absurdity in its many meanings. In many instances, these artists employ theatrical techniques by utilizing crudely-made props, costumes, and flimsy sets. By engaging dark and oftentimes ironic humor in absurd or impossible scenarios, these artists expose the underlying brutality, dehumanization, fears and taboos of American society.

On Thursday, November 20th, at 6:30 am, the SLO Toastmasters Club will be hosting a meeting that is open to the public. Club #83 is one of thousands of Toastmaster's International Clubs in over 80 countries worldwide. Clare Strohman, immediate past president, will be delivering one of her advanced speeches. Of special note, Priscilla Jeng, an asian immigrant who came to this country at the young age of 14, will be giving a presentation as to, “Why the Mail Must Go Through”. Ms. Jeng is the Postmaster at the Santa Maria Postoffice and she has an inside track to the upcoming changes which will affect anyone who receives mail!
This meeting is open to the public. Please call our President, Gary Hicklin, at 781-5091 to reserve your spot. Directions to our meeting site can be found at: www.slotoastmasters.org.

From now until December 31 individual donations to the North County's Women's Shelter will be twice as powerful thanks to a generous offer from Lance and Nina Holt. The couple has offered to match donations to the North County's Shelter Program up to $10,000.
"Any funds sent to us will now do twice the work, provide twice the services, buy twice as much food and more," said Eileen Allan, executive director. The North County Women's Shelter maintains two 24-hour shelters in the north county for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Shelter services include counseling, case management, food, medical care, clothing, transportation, assistance with restraining orders and more at no cost to the families.
The Shelter Program is partially funded by county, state, and federal grants. Each grantor requires a show of local support as requirement of receiving funds. Fundraising efforts not only help provide direct services, but also meet this requirement. "Those donations of money are leveraged to ensure that we get the financial aid needed to provide two safe houses and the related services such as assistance with temporary restraining orders, individual and group counseling, on-campus school counseling, food, toiletries and more," Allan said.
"The community has been extremely supportive of our cause during my 17 years with the agency," Allan said, adding, "It is heart warming to know that this community is also very concerned with the incidents of domestic violence and its impact on not only the adult victims, but the innocent children too. Sixty percent of our shelter residents are children."
The agency's current board of directors are; Robert Burton, Captain Paso Robles Police Department, Jennifer Hayner, Attorney at Law, Diane Mandala, Real Estate Broker Associate, San Marquis, Retired Financial Executive, Robin Weckerly, Commander Sheriff's Department, Brandon Yakush, Forensic Psychologist and Carol Kiessig, Retired Business Owner.
