ent_guitar01 6:00 PM  -  7:00 PM Vellamo Folk Duo Concert at Adams Center Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Kingston Public Library is happy to welcome back Finnish Folk Duo, Vellamo!

Northern Beat 2017 Tour

Vellamo is led by the performing and songwriting team of Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala. Their music is
characterized by haunting melodies, Pia's ethereal lead vocals and Joni's virtuosic guitar stylings. In Finnish
mythology, Vellamo is the goddess of the sea. Based in Kokkola, on the western coast of Finland, Vellamo
combines the rich tradition of Finnish folksong with an appealing “retro” sensibility, creating a modern folk
music experience.  This will be their 8th tour in the United States.

This concert is a free, family event.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Kingston Library and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

It will be held at the Adams Center, 33 Summer Street in Kingston.

food_wineglass.GIF 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM South Shore Locavores: Informal Potluck and Discussion Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

After seven years of great South Shore Locavores programs about local food, we're looking at changing things up a bit. We have thoroughly enjoyed the ride, and now we're ready to try some new ideas. For the September 21st program, we invite you to join us for an informal potluck and discussion. Bring your best ideas for the kind of programs you're most interested in. We'll share ours, too.

Sharing food is always fun, so we invite you to bring a dish -- but if you’re not a cook or don't have the time, come anyway. What we're really interested in is your ideas!

The South Shore Locavores series -- a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine -- looks at what it means to eat locally. The series has been running since January 2010.

Programs will be held from 7:00 to 9 p.m. at the Kingston Senior Center, 30 Evergreen Street. The programs are free, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover program expenses.

See the list of Locavores programs for this season on the edible South Shore & South Coast website. Topics and location may occasionally be changed.

The Library compiles themed resource lists for each Locavores session. And there are always great door prizes!

Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share. There will be time at the break and end of the meeting for munching and mingling.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: To help fight hunger on the South Shore, there is a collection box for non-perishable foods at each gathering for donation to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.

Bees pollinate the food crops that we rely on to survive. Yet bees are dying at an alarming rate, threatening food supplies and ecosystems around the world.  In this richly illustrated natural history of the bee, Noah Wilson-Rich and his team of bee experts provide a window into the vitally important role bees play in the life of our planet.

Noah Wilson-Rich, Chief Scientific Officer of the Best Bees Company, is a behavioral ecologist and published author.  He has held various adjunct faculty appointments in biology at Tufts University, Northeastern University, and Simmons College and has given two talks at TEDxBoston.

This bold new history recovers an unknown American Revolution as seen through the eyes of Boston-born painter John Singleton Copley, whose life and career were marked by spectacular rises and devastating falls. His achievements in both Britain and America made him a towering figure of both nations’ artistic legacies.

Jane Kamensky is Professor of History at Harvard University and Pforzheimer Foundation Director of the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and the recipient of numerous awards.

Boston's Big Dig has contributed more to our understanding and appreciation of the city's archaeological history than any other recent event. Joe Bagley, city archaeologist of Boston, uncovers a fascinating hodgepodge of history--from ancient fishing grounds to Jazz Age red-light districts--that will surprise and delight even longtime residents. Each artifact is shown in full color and accompanied by description of the item’s significance to its site location and the larger history of the city

Joe Bagley studied archaeology at Boston University and UMass Boston and joined the City Archaeology Program in 2011, where he curates a growing repository of archaeological collections.

Brack tells the wrenching and ultimately uplifting stories of families who find a new purpose after unspeakable loss. From personal experience, he speaks passionately to readers trying to make sense of calamity and to our shared capacity to transform pain into something good.

Ken Brack is a narrative nonfiction author and a longtime journalist in New England, moved by how people grow through catastrophic ordeals. His first book, Closer By The Mile, is the story of the country’s leading single-event athletic fundraiser, the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon for cancer research. The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For is a timely collection of speeches by David McCullough that reminds us of fundamental American principles. McCullough has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions over the course of his career. Now, at a time of self-reflection in America following a bitter election campaign that has divided the country, McCullough reminds us of core American values to which we all subscribe.

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback.  He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
