    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Learn some live-fire shellfish-cooking tips to entertain your Dad on Father's Day. Paula Marcoux, author of Cooking with Fire (Storey Press, 2014), will demonstrate a few delicious ways to combine the harvest of our local waters with the excitement of hot coals.

The South Shore Locavores series -- a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine -- looks at what it means to eat locally. The series has been running since January 2010. The series is also hosted by the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

Programs will be held from 7:00 to 9 p.m. at the Kingston Senior Center, 30 Evergreen Street. The programs are free, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover program expenses.

See the list of Locavores programs for this season on the edible South Shore & South Coast website. Topics and location may occasionally be changed.

The Library compiles themed resource lists for each Locavores session. And there are always great door prizes!

Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share. There will be time at the break and end of the meeting for munching and mingling.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: To help fight hunger on the South Shore, there is a collection box for non-perishable foods at each gathering for donation to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: To help fight hunger on the South Shore, there is a collection box for non-perishable foods at each gathering for donation to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.

rec_sailboat.GIF 6:30 PM Sense the Wind Filmmaker Screening Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Do you think you would be brave enough to sail if you literally couldn't see where you were going? A few years ago, four blind sailors did exactly that. They trained to compete in an international sailing championship for the blind. A new film, Sense the Wind, tells their story.

On Monday, June 26, 6:30pm, the Kingston Council on Aging, Kingston Public Library, Kingston Recreation Department, and the Kingston Yacht Club join together to host a filmmaker screening of Sense the Wind: Blind sailors race across open water.

Six years in the making, Sense the Wind, which follows the journey of four blind sailors as they train and compete in national and international regattas, is making its way around the globe in outreach and beginning distribution. The film was recently given a Humanitarian Award at the Socially Relevant Film Festival NY and recently showed in Tokyo with more regional showings scheduled across the US.

The hour-long documentary will be followed by a Q&A with NY based Producer/Director Christine Knowlton. See a preview here.

This free program will be held at the Council on Aging at 30 Evergreen Street. Pre-registration is required through the Kingston Recreation Department, http://www.kingstonrec.com or (781) 585-0533.

High school students are more than their grades, test scores, or activities. Experiences and interests shape what the future holds, too, which is what the college essay is all about. If you are preparing to head to college, the essay is the best way to let schools know who you really are and why you should be considered for acceptance. The Kingston Public Library is offering a free presentation for seniors on Monday,

August 7 at 7PM. This program is being conducted by Hannah Roveto, a professional marketing writer. This two-hour session, which will include the opportunity for Q&A, is designed to help up to 25 seniors. The topics that will be covered are how to consider the application process and school selection in ways that help tailor essays and applications, understand what colleges want and don’t in an essay. You will learn tricks for approaching the essay and creating a first draft that is really yours, and review how to edit and finish a good essay.

To register for this program please call (781)585-0517 ext. 6271 or online through the calendar of events on the library website at www.kingstonpubliclibrary.org.

The Kingston Public Library is happy to welcome back Finnish Folk Duo, Vellamo!

Northern Beat 2017 Tour

Vellamo is led by the performing and songwriting team of Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala. Their music is
characterized by haunting melodies, Pia's ethereal lead vocals and Joni's virtuosic guitar stylings. In Finnish
mythology, Vellamo is the goddess of the sea. Based in Kokkola, on the western coast of Finland, Vellamo
combines the rich tradition of Finnish folksong with an appealing “retro” sensibility, creating a modern folk
music experience.  This will be their 8th tour in the United States.

This concert is a free, family event.  It is sponsored by the Friends of the Kingston Library and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

It will be held at the Adams Center, 33 Summer Street in Kingston.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.     Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

After seven years of great South Shore Locavores programs about local food, we're looking at changing things up a bit. We have thoroughly enjoyed the ride, and now we're ready to try some new ideas. For the September 21st program, we invite you to join us for an informal potluck and discussion. Bring your best ideas for the kind of programs you're most interested in. We'll share ours, too.

Sharing food is always fun, so we invite you to bring a dish -- but if you’re not a cook or don't have the time, come anyway. What we're really interested in is your ideas!

The South Shore Locavores series -- a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine -- looks at what it means to eat locally. The series has been running since January 2010.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x 6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Boston's Big Dig has contributed more to our understanding and appreciation of the city's archaeological history than any other recent event. Joe Bagley, city archaeologist of Boston, uncovers a fascinating hodgepodge of history--from ancient fishing grounds to Jazz Age red-light districts--that will surprise and delight even longtime residents. Each artifact is shown in full color and accompanied by description of the item’s significance to its site location and the larger history of the city

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x 6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Brack tells the wrenching and ultimately uplifting stories of families who find a new purpose after unspeakable loss. From personal experience, he speaks passionately to readers trying to make sense of calamity and to our shared capacity to transform pain into something good.

Ken Brack is a narrative nonfiction author and a longtime journalist in New England, moved by how people grow through catastrophic ordeals. His first book, Closer By The Mile, is the story of the country’s leading single-event athletic fundraiser, the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon for cancer research. He blogs for Psychology Today’s website.  In 2008, he and his wife Denise opened the Hope Floats Healing and Wellness Center in Kingston.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x 6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For is a timely collection of speeches by David McCullough that reminds us of fundamental American principles. McCullough has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions over the course of his career. Now, at a time of self-reflection in America following a bitter election campaign that has divided the country, McCullough reminds us of core American values to which we all subscribe.

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback.  He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.

We will meet on the second Thursday of each month in the Meeting Room.  Light refreshments will be available.

This month we are reading [a book to be announced].  If you would like the Library to help you locate a copy, please call 781-585-0517 x121. We'll also be choosing books for the rest of the season. Come and join the discussion!
