    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

The Locavores will be making apple pies -- a whole lot of them! The pies will be donated, frozen and unbaked, to families served by the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse, complete with baking instructions and nutritional labels. In 2014 the group made and donated 65 pies!

Bring rolling pins, peelers, paring knives, cookie cutters with fall shapes – be sure to label them with your name!

Registration is not necessary. If you would like to make a donation or have questions about this program, please call or email Library Director Sia Stewart at sstewart@kingstonpubliclibrary.org, 781-585-0517 x122.

Next programs for this season:

January 21 How Do You Locavore? A mix-and-mingle potluck

Bring a dish and join fellow locavores for one of our famous potlucks. Curious about how others manage to do this locavore thing in New England in the middle of winter? This is the group for you!

March 17 South Shore Organics: a few more of our favorite things

Pam Denholm of South Shore Organics, a family-owned delivery service for fresh local and organic and sustainably-grown produce, returns to share some of her favorite local products and vendors.

May 19 Local Cheese Tasting with Adam Centamore

Back by popular demand, wine and cheese educator  Adam Centamore returns to offer a tasting of local cheeses and advice on wine pairings. His new book, Tasting Wine and Cheese: An Insider's Guide to Mastering the Principles of Pairing, will be available for purchase and signing. Watch this one for a possible change of venue.

The South Shore Locavores series -- a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine -- looks at the phenomenon of eating locally. The series has been running since January 2010. This year, the series is also hosted by the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation as part of a new collaboration: What's the Big Idea: a Partnership for Lifelong Learning. The series is sponsored in part by WATD 95.9 FM Radio and Marty's Buick GMC.

Programs will be held from 7:00 to 9 p.m. at the Kingston Senior Center, 30 Evergreen Street. See the list of Locavores programs for this season on the edible South Shore & South Coast website. Topics and location may occasionally be changed.

The Library compiles themed resource lists for each Locavores session. And there are always great door prizes.

Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share. There will be time at the break and end of the meeting for munching and mingling.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: To help fight hunger on the South Shore, there is a collection box for non-perishable foods at each gathering for donation to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.

What are your concerns when shopping to feed yourself and your family? Take a virtual walk through the aisles as we learn about truth in labeling, GMOs, Organics, Nutritional Data and more. We’ll move from center aisles to the perimeter where we’ll discuss what it means for meat to be called “natural” (Hint: it may not be what you think!), how to shop for sustainable fish, and why some produce is on “the dirty dozen” list, and which ones made “the clean 15.” You’ll leave with tips, hints and resources to make your shopping experience simpler and quicker.

Mimi Maxwell is a Massachusetts native who travelled to the west coast where she fell in love, had babies and earned a culinary degree. She and her family moved back to the South Shore almost 30 years ago to winterize and settle into her grandparents’ summer cottage. When she’s not tending to her front yard garden she’s doting on her hens or cooking for her giant Irish-American family.

The South Shore Locavores series -- a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library and edible South Shore & South Coast magazine -- looks at what it means to eat locally. The series has been running since January 2010. The series is also hosted by the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

Programs will be held from 7:00 to 9 p.m. at the Kingston Senior Center, 30 Evergreen Street. The programs are free, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover program expenses.

See the list of Locavores programs for this season on the edible South Shore & South Coast website. Topics and location may occasionally be changed.

The Library compiles themed resource lists for each Locavores session. And there are always great door prizes!

Attendees are invited to bring a dish to share. There will be time at the break and end of the meeting for munching and mingling.

TEAM UP AGAINST HUNGER: To help fight hunger on the South Shore, there is a collection box for non-perishable foods at each gathering for donation to the Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse.

food_wineglass.GIF 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM South Shore Locavores: Composting 101 with Karen Kullas Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Karen Kullas, engineer, inventor, and composting advocate, has been composting her entire life. She took the DEP's Home Composting certification course in 1996, and ever since then she has made it a mission to speak at garden clubs, schools, ecology fairs and more, to help gardeners understand how to compost efficiently and effectively. For seven years, she participated in the Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom project. Now, she'll bring that expertise to Kingston.

Join us for a hands-on presentation and demonstration. You can expect to learn about the stages of composting, the pros and cons of different systems, why the whole thing is so important. Karen will bring one type of bin and show us how to set it up, but she'll talk about other types of bins as well. We'll have materials at each table so you can easily follow along.

Donations to the Taunton Ecology Awareness Movement are welcome at the program.

David Pepe has been raising chickens since 2010 and turkeys since 2013. His interest in history extends to heritage breeds of livestock. He is a member of The Livestock Conservancy, which protects and educates farmers about rare breeds of livestock. He is currently in a mentoring program with the Sustainable Poultry Network to learn about raising, breeding, and cooking heritage poultry , including chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese. David's current flock includes Rhode Island Red chickens, and he hope to have hatching eggs, baby chicks and young birds for sale in the spring of 2017. He'll talk to us about his experiences with heritage poultry, and will touch on the topic of processing poultry, alerting us to the complex regulations governing poultry processing.

misc_none Spring Author Talks -- Nathaniel Philbrick with Valiant Ambition Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Valiant Ambition is a complex, controversial, and dramatic portrait of a people in crisis and the war that gave birth to a nation. The focus is on loyalty and personal integrity, evoking a Shakespearean tragedy that unfolds in the key relationship of George Washington and Benedict Arnold, who is an impulsive but sympathetic hero whose misfortunes at the hands of self-serving politicians fatally destroy his faith in the legitimacy of the rebellion. As a country wary of tyrants suddenly must figure out how it should be led, Washington’s unmatched ability to rise above the petty politics of his time enables him to win the war that really matters.

Nathaniel Philbrick earned a BA in English from Brown University and an MA in America Literature from Duke University, where he was a James B. Duke Fellow.  He is the author of the New York Times bestseller In the Heart of the Sea, winner of the National Book Award for nonfiction; Sea of Glory, winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize and the Albion-Monroe Award from the National Maritime Historical Society; and Mayflower, finalist for both the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in History and the Los Angeles Times Book Award and winner of the Massachusetts Book Award for nonfiction. Nathaniel Philbrick was born in Boston, Massachusetts, grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and now lives on Nantucket.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation. The series is sponsored by WATD 95.9 FM Radio. Programs are held at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street and will last from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

The Kingston Public Library will provide copies of the books for sale and signing.

Light refreshments will be offered, and although the program is free, reservations are requested.

As part of the 300th anniversary of First Parish Church in Kingston, the Kingston Public Library will put on public display of a series of panels tracing the history of the church.  Beginning with an impressive copy of the 1717 Original Petition, the story of the church and parish will be illustrated from the First Meetinghouse to the beautiful Third Meetinghouse still in use today.

First Parish Church, founded in 1717, is the oldest civic and religious institution in our community. Nine years later (1726) the Jones River Parish or North Precinct became the town of Kingston.  Our church has seen many changes over the centuries and many interesting stories survive to be told.

Thomas Vendetti, a First Parish 300th Planning Committee member, has assembled a collection of facts, stories and materials of interest that will be shared at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the Kingston Public Library.  Time will be set aside for questions and answers and to explore the displays and artifacts.

All are welcome.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

If you're a meat eater, chances are you love bacon--most people seem to. But how much do you actually know about pigs, and what's it like raising them? Meet Sam Hainer from Pokatimus, a farm in Norwell. At the next South Shore Locavores meeting, he'll be sharing the experiences he and his wife Amy have had raising pigs in their own backyard, as well as in collaboration with Norwell Farms.

Over the last seven years, Pokatimus has raised 29 pigs and sold 3 tons of humanely-raised pork from the rarest hog breeds to the local market. Sam will share both their successes and failures as they pursue their dreams to raise the best , happiest pigs and offer the finest products, including charcuterie items, to the local market--they've worked with Boston restaurants, chased pigs through the snow for four hours, attempted partnerships with butchers, tackled pigs at full speed escaping out the driveway, taught bacon making classes at a local community kitchen, given shots to extremely upset 300 lb sick pigs, explored unique business models with Boston musicians, and driven thousands of miles to find rare pigs and bring them to the most humane slaughterhouses.

Sam will also give a brief lecture on the history of raising pigs in New England, early methods of food preservation, and provide instruction on curing your own bacon and hams. He'll tell you everything you need to know about getting started raising your own pigs and is happy to answer any questions.

From their website: Pokatimus is a new farm in Norwell, Massachusetts committed to practicing sustainable small-scale agriculture, increasing bio-diversity by raising rare breeds of livestock, and contributing to the development of the local infrastructure needed to support our collective efforts to grow, raise, and distribute organic crops and humanely-raised meat and dairy products on Boston's South Shore.

The longer the Patriots continue to dominate on the field, the harder it becomes for anyone to remember them as anything other than a model franchise. Yet for the bulk of their existence, the Pats were the laughingstock of the NFL. From Darkness to Dynasty: The First 40 Years of the New England Patriots tells the unlikely history of the New England Patriots. From their humble beginnings to their first Super Bowl victory, Thornton shares the story of the first forty years of the most dominant franchise in NFL history.

Jerry Thornton writes for Barstool Sports and is co-host of WEEI's NFL Sunday program.  He has appeared on HBO's Emmy Award-winning "Curse of the Bambino" and in the Deflategate documentary "Four Games in Fall." He's been part of the Boston comedy scene for over 25 years and was the winner of the Boston Comedy Riot competition.

After losing vision in one eye, Howard Axelrod found himself in a world where reality had been shattered, with an increasing gulf between how people saw him and how he saw himself.  Axelrod retreated to a small house in the Vermont woods. He lived with barely any human contact for two years. A memoir of solitude in an age of superficial connection, The Point of Vanishing probes the profoundly human questions of perception, time, identity, and meaning.

Mr. Axelrod’s work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Salon, VQR, Shambhala Sun, Harvard Magazine, and The Boston Globe. Axelrod has taught literature and writing at Harvard, University of Arizona, and Grub Street, and currently teaches at Loyola University in Chicago.

food_wineglass.GIF 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM South Shore Locavores: All about Fermentation, with Linda Davey Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Fermentation. A new dietary buzzword associated with probiotics and gut health. But it's really not that new. Bread, beer, wine, cheese, even some meats. Come learn about the everyday foods you're probably already eating that have been fermented as we talk about this ancient food preservation technique. We'll talk about what fermentation is and how to start fermenting at home.  Fermented foods are becoming more and more popular; with people choosing them for both health and lifestyle reasons.

Join us to find out more about what fermentation is and learn about local resources to help you get started fermenting at home. You will also have the opportunity to sample a variety of fermented foods and beverages.

Plymouth resident Linda Davey has worked for more than 25 years in the food service/restaurant industry. She and her husband are home brewers, cheesemakers, and bakers who love to experiment with fresh, local ingredients, as well as the left-overs/by-products of baking and brewing. The Fermentation Studio allows her to share ways to preserve and prepare some of the foods/drinks she loves.

The Fermentation Studio at IndieFerm is the new home of Plymouth Homebrew and more.  What started as a local store for home brewers and winemakers to purchase grain, equipment, and other supplies, is now home to resources for all things fermented.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Veteran journalists Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge have written the definitive inside look at the Boston Marathon bombings with a unique, Boston-based account of the events that riveted the world. Based on months of intensive interviews, this is the first book to tell the entire story through the eyes of those who experienced it. From the cop first on the scene, to the detectives assigned to the manhunt, the authors provide a behind-the-scenes look at the investigation. More than a true-crime book, Boston Strong: A City's Triumph Over Tragedy also tells the tragic but ultimately life-affirming story of the victims and their recoveries and gives voice to those who lost loved ones.

Dave Wedge is a best-selling author and writer based in Boston. He was an investigative reporter at The Boston Herald for 14 years and now writes for Vice Media. He has also written for Esquire, Newsweek, THUMP and DigBoston. Boston Strong, written with New York Times bestselling author Casey Sherman, is his first book and is the basis for the new movie Patriots Day.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x112   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

The acclaimed actress and author of Jesse: A Mother’s Story tells the story of her outspoken, frequently outrageous Italian immigrant mother.

Ma Speaks Up: And a First Generation Daughter Talks Back is a record of growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, with the wrong family, in the wrong religion. Though Marianne’s girlhood is flooded with shame, it’s equally packed with adventure, love, great cooking, and, above all, humor. The extremely premature birth of Marianne’s beloved son, Jesse, bonds mother and daughter in ways she couldn’t have imagined. The stories she tells will speak to anyone who has struggled with outsider status in any form and, of course, to mothers and their blemished, cherished girls.

Marianne Leone is an actress, screenwriter and essayist. She had a recurring role on HBO’s Sopranos and has appeared in other films, including David O. Russell’s recent film Joy. Her essays have appeared in The Boston Globe, Coastal Living, Post Road and Solstice. She is married to Chris Cooper, an academy-award winning actor. She lives in Kingston.

With mutiny and high-tide looming, they must rescue their salty captain and find a way to construct a ship before all hope is lost … at sea! Planks, sails, rigging, rails... what else could building a pirate ship possibly take? Throughout the story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the incredible science behind clouds, flash paper, air pressure, inertia, explosions and more. Don’t miss this refreshing nautical tale with a twist! Children ages 5+ and can sign-up for this program beginning June 1.
