misc_none 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Spring Author Talks -- Marianne Leone with Ma Speaks Up Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

The acclaimed actress and author of Jesse: A Mother’s Story tells the story of her outspoken, frequently outrageous Italian immigrant mother.

Ma Speaks Up: And a First Generation Daughter Talks Back is a record of growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, with the wrong family, in the wrong religion. Though Marianne’s girlhood is flooded with shame, it’s equally packed with adventure, love, great cooking, and, above all, humor. The extremely premature birth of Marianne’s beloved son, Jesse, bonds mother and daughter in ways she couldn’t have imagined. The stories she tells will speak to anyone who has struggled with outsider status in any form and, of course, to mothers and their blemished, cherished girls.

Marianne Leone is an actress, screenwriter and essayist. She had a recurring role on HBO’s Sopranos and has appeared in other films, including David O. Russell’s recent film Joy. Her essays have appeared in The Boston Globe, Coastal Living, Post Road and Solstice. She is married to Chris Cooper, an academy-award winning actor. She lives in Kingston.

    Contact: Main Desk   781-585-0517 x6271   kilib@kingstonpubliclibrary.org

Brad Cook, a Kingston resident since 1978, was a deeply troubled young man who had a chance encounter with a stranger who shared his intriguing story around the campfire one evening in the summer of 1975. The seed of a dream was planted, which turned out to be the spark Brad needed to initiate what he describes as a complete physical, mental, and spiritual transformation, a quest for more.

Cook hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2008. The experience transformed his life and taught him that exposure to the natural world may be the crucial missing piece that our children need in today's over-scheduled and technology-addicted society. Cook has told his story in a new book, Trail Dreams: discover your true source of happiness. More information is available on his website at www.traildreams.com.

Brad Cook had a successful career for 35 years in public education as a teacher, health educator, and track coach in the city of Brockton, Massachusetts, as well as in rural and suburban settings. With three teaching certifications, he taught in elementary, junior high and high school classrooms in a diverse mixture of teaching environments and student populations. He has been an endurance athlete for 40-years and still competes in triathlons. He lives with his wife, Karen, and his dog, Otis, splitting time between Massachusetts and Maine.

He will talk about his story and his vision for a new way to reunite children with their birthright, the great outdoors.

Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing. Although the program is free, registration is requested.

lib_book3 7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Spring Author Talks: 3 Renowned Authors on Writing From Personal Loss Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

When writers experience personal loss, they write about it, sometimes as fiction, and sometimes as a memoir. Writing a memoir dealing with difficult or traumatic experiences takes a unique kind of effort and talent. In a special June 15th addition to the Kingston Spring Author Talks, three accomplished writers will talk about their experiences with writing this kind of memoir. One has written two memoirs, one talked with other authors about how they handled their own stories of loss and trauma, and one wrote a guide for anyone seeking to tell such a story.

Kingston resident Marianne Leone, familiar to both local and international audiences for her acclaimed memoir about her son, Jesse: A Mother's Story, has also written a second memoir, Ma Speaks Up: And a First Generation Daughter Talks Back, a witty, honest, loving book about her outspoken and frequently outrageous Italian immigrant mother. In both books, Leone deals with the story of her beloved son Jesse, whose extremely premature birth bonded Leone and her mother in ways she couldn’t have imagined. Marianne Leone is also an actress, screenwriter and essayist. Her essays have appeared in the Boston Globe, Coastal Living, Post Road and Solstice. She is well known for her recurring role on HBO’s Sopranos as well as her role with Robert DeNiro in the recent movie Joy.

Melanie Brooks, who teaches writing at Northeastern University, Merrimack College, and Nashua Community College, talked with many famous writers, including Leone, about how they approached the task of writing their difficult personal stories. The conversations are included in her new book, Writing Hard Stories: Celebrated Memoirists Who Shaped Art from Trauma, recently named a “Best Book for Writers” by Poets&Writers. The book includes profiles with some of our country's most prolific writers: Alysia Abbott, Richard Blanco, Kate Bornstein, Edwidge Danticat, Mark Doty, Andre Dubus III, Jessica Handler, Richard Hoffman, Marianne Leone, Michael Patrick McDonald, Kyoko Mori, Suzanne Strempek Shea, Sue William Silverman, Kim Stafford, Abigail Thomas, Jerald Walker, Joan Wickersham, and Monica Wood.

Jessica Handler is the author of Braving the Fire: A Guide to Writing About Grief, and Invisible Sisters: A Memoir. Her nonfiction has appeared on NPR, in Tin House, Drunken Boat, Brevity, Newsweek, The Washington Post and More Magazine. Created by and for the writer who has experienced illness, loss, or the death of a loved one. Braving the Fire takes the writers’ perspective in exploring the challenges and rewards for the writer who has chosen to be the memory keeper. Loosely organized around the familiar Kubler-Ross “Five Stages of Grief,” Braving the Fire helps the reader and writer through the emotional and creative tasks before them, incorporating interviews and excerpts from other treasured writers who’ve done the same.

The three writers will appear together at this final program of the Kingston Spring Author Talks at the Kingston Council on Aging.

The ongoing author series is sponsored by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and Kingston Public Library Foundation. The series is also sponsored by WATD 95.9 FM Radio.

Westwinds Bookshop will provide copies of the book for sale and signing.

Light refreshments will be offered, and although the program is free, registration is requested.

rec_sailboat.GIF 6:30 PM Sense the Wind Filmmaker Screening Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Do you think you would be brave enough to sail if you literally couldn't see where you were going? A few years ago, four blind sailors did exactly that. They trained to compete in an international sailing championship for the blind. A new film, Sense the Wind, tells their story.

On Monday, June 26, 6:30pm, the Kingston Council on Aging, Kingston Public Library, Kingston Recreation Department, and the Kingston Yacht Club join together to host a filmmaker screening of Sense the Wind: Blind sailors race across open water.

Six years in the making, Sense the Wind, which follows the journey of four blind sailors as they train and compete in national and international regattas, is making its way around the globe in outreach and beginning distribution. The film was recently given a Humanitarian Award at the Socially Relevant Film Festival NY and recently showed in Tokyo with more regional showings scheduled across the US.

The hour-long documentary will be followed by a Q&A with NY based Producer/Director Christine Knowlton. See a preview here.

This free program will be held at the Council on Aging at 30 Evergreen Street. Pre-registration is required through the Kingston Recreation Department, http://www.kingstonrec.com or (781) 585-0533.

Ahoy! People don’t just build on land. They build on water, too! Set sail with us on a thrilling action-packed adventure about a crew of quirky pirates marooned on a deserted island. With mutiny and high-tide looming, they must rescue their salty captain and find a way to construct a ship before all hope is lost … at sea! Planks, sails, rigging, rails... what else could building a pirate ship possibly take? Throughout the story, volunteers from the audience will help us explore the incredible science behind clouds, flash paper, air pressure, inertia, explosions and more. Don’t miss this refreshing nautical tale with a twist! Children ages 5+ and can sign-up for this program beginning June 1.

This month we are reading A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.  If you would like the Library to help you locate a copy, please call 781-585-0517 x121. We'll also be choosing books for the rest of the season. Come and join the discussion!

Questions?  Contact Anna Kelley, group facilitator, at 781-585-0589 or KPLreader@hotmail.com.
