The first 2 workshops will take place inside and outside the library.  One additional class (to be determined based on weather) will take place at the Starhoo Observatory in Lakeville.

Participants need to bring a digital single-lens reflex camera to each workshop.

These workshops are intended to educate interested children through visualization techniques to easily grasp the concepts of the astronomy. They will also be able to achieve the “WOW” factor by not being in a typical classroom for these workshops.

    Contact: Teresa Mirra   508-947-9028   teemirra@sailsinc.org

Jungle Jim and the children build their own Rube Goldberg-style mousetrap to catch a mouse loose in the library – one that will capture it without injuring him. Building a new  invention like that from scratch might be tricky, so first they learn the five    simple machines that go into more advanced machines – the   lever, the wheel, the pulley, the inclined plane and the screw.

The machines are not made of wood, metal or plastic; they are made of balloons. Besides being fun and exciting for kids, the balloons prove that machines can be made out of anything - even balloons!

Sails library network is hosting a privacy workshop for library consortium staff.  These workshops are in partnership with the ACLU of Massachusetts, and the workshops are designed to educate library staff on issues of privacy and surveillance as they relate to our profession. Participants will learn how to protect patron privacy from common threats, how to defend patron privacy rights, as well as a number of practical privacy tools that can be implemented in library environments. There is no cost for this workshop and it takes about 2-3 hours with time for q&a.
