Book Buzz -- Discover new books, broaden your horizons, and share your insights.

The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green

TIME Magazine’s #1 Fiction Book of 2012!  Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Discussion will be led by Youth Services Librarian Mary Inman.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

  • Critical reading skills
  • Math problem-solving skills
  • Writing skills

You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn't require you to recall specific facts from your classes.

The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:

  • Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
  • See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
  • Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
  • Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
  • Receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service.

Local electronic music legend Bil Vermette will discuss the history of electronic music, from the early analog days to the present, and give a live performance.  There will also be a hands-on exhibit for the audience afterwards.

Electronic music has seen an incredible amount of change since just the early 1970s. That's when Bil began experimenting with early analog synthesizers and other various means to compose, record, and perform his original electronic soundscapes. He since has used digital synthesizers, samplers, "soft synths" or computer programs, and iPads to produce his sounds.  Bil has an LP and five CDs under his belt, all with national and international sales.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, by Rachel Joyce

Recently retired, Harold Fry lives in a small English village with a wife who seems irritated by everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next until a letter arrives in the mail from a woman he hasn't heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy, in hospice, is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply, but a chance encounter at the corner mailbox convinces him that he must deliver it in person. So Harold sets off on a six-hundred mile journey because, he believes, as long as he walks, Queenie will live.

Discussion will be led by Reference Librarian Pam Zukoski.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

The paintings of Belgian Surrealist René Magritte have fascinated viewers since before the second world war. Many find Magritte's works as intellectually challenging as they are visually appealing. In this slide lecture, art historian Jeff Mishur discusses Magritte's relationship to the Surrealist movement and places a variety of his paintings in an appropriate historic context.

Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938, will be exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago from June 24 - October 15, 2014 (member preview June 21-23).

Jeff Mishur is co-owner of Art Excursions, a company that provides private guiding in Chicago; lectures; and boutique art and culture tours in the United States. A popular speaker about art historical and travel topics, Mishur has his M.A. in Art History from Northern Illinois University and has taught at the university level for many years.

This fascinating first-person portrayal by Leslie Goddard brings to life the fascinating life and achievements of Amelia Earhart.

American aviator Earhart’s courageous exploits and spirited personality made her an international celebrity. Her dazzling achievements include becoming the first woman to cross the Atlantic ocean by airplane (1928) and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932). She set numerous speed and altitude records before disappearing mysteriously in July, 1937 during an attempted around-the-world flight.  Set in 1937, you will learn first-hand about her upbringing, the records she broke, and her tireless work to promote opportunities for women.

Leslie Goddard holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in U.S. history and American studies, as well as a master’s degree in theater. A former museum director, she is the author of two books on Chicago history. She has been performing and speaking on topics in history for ten years, presenting programs for scores of libraries, museums, schools, and clubs around the Chicago area.

But times on the island are tough for Isabel as she suffers multiple miscarriages and a stillbirth in just four years time. When a boat with a dead man and a young baby washes ashore, Isabel convinces Tom to let her keep the baby as their own, but the consequences to her actions may be dire.

One Summer: America, 1927, by Bill Bryson

The summer of 1927 began with one of the signature events of the twentieth century: on May 21, 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first man to cross the Atlantic by plane nonstop, and when he landed, he ignited an explosion of worldwide rapture and instantly became the most famous person on the planet. Meanwhile, the titanically talented Babe Ruth was beginning his assault on the home run record, which would culminate on September 30 with his sixtieth blast, one of the most resonant and durable records in sports history. In between those dates a Queens housewife named Ruth Snyder and her corset-salesman lover garroted her husband, leading to a murder trial that became a huge tabloid sensation. The American South was clobbered by unprecedented rain and by flooding of the Mississippi basin. The gangster Al Capone tightened his grip on the illegal booze business through a gaudy and murderous reign of terror and municipal corruption. The first true "talking picture," Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer, was filmed and forever changed the motion picture industry. The four most powerful central bankers on earth met in secret session on a Long Island estate and made a fateful decision that virtually guaranteed a future crash and depression. All this and much, much more transpired in that epochal summer of 1927.

Discussion will be led by Reference Librarian Pam Zukoski.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

1984, by George Orwell

1984 is the year in which it happens. The world is divided into three great powers. Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia, each perpetually at war with the other. Throughout Oceania, 'The Party' rules by the agency of four ministries, whose power is absolute -- the Ministry of Peace, which deals with war, the Ministry of Love (headquarters of the dreaded Thought Police), which deals with law and order, the Ministry of Plenty, which deals in scarcities, and the Ministry of Truth which deals with propaganda. The authorities keep a check on every action, word, gesture or thought.

Discussion will be led by Youth Services Librarian Mary Inman.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Defending Jacob, by William Landay

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than twenty years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: his fourteen-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student. Every parental instinct Andy has rallies to protect his boy. Jacob insists that he is innocent, and Andy believes him. But as damning facts and shocking revelations surface, as a marriage threatens to crumble and the trial intensifies, and as the crisis reveals how little a father knows about his son, Andy will face a trial of his own--between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he's tried to bury and a future he cannot conceive.

Discussion will be led by Library Director Sandi Pointon.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Group meets to discuss the chosen book for the month:  The Aviator's Wife, by Melanie Benjamin.

Despite her own major achievements--she becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States--Anne Morrow Lindbergh is viewed merely as Charles Lindbergh's wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life's infinite possibilities for change and happiness.

Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline

Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to 'aging out' out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse.... As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren't as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life--answers that will ultimately free them both. Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding out who we are.

Discussion will be led by Adult Services Librarian Debbie Somchay.  Copies of the book are available one month in advance at the Circulation Desk. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.
