Navigating Transitions with Self-Care
Charlotte Sahyoun, Yoga Therapeutics Specialist
Often, we equate self-care as self-indulgent, yet research is increasingly demonstrating that taking time for effective self-care, a couple minutes throughout the day helps create stress resilience, a more effective strategy than stress avoidance. Charlotte Sahyoun is a yoga therapeutics specialist with a focus on the intersection of yoga, psychology and neuroscience. She’ll focus on when and how we feel stress and on two-minute tools in which to tune-in to the body for creating emotional balance.

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

The Green Road / by Anne Enright

The Green Road is the thoroughfare that connects the properties of the Madigan and Considine families in County Clare, Ireland. It is the road Pat Madigan traveled as he courted Rosaleen Considine. Pat and Rosaleen married and had four children--Dan, Emmet, Hanna, and Constance. Rosaleen, dramatic and difficult, has been a constant source of criticism and tension in her children's lives. All are now grown and have moved away from home. Dan considered the priesthood for a time, but ended up in New York where he finally acknowledged his homosexuality. Emmet is in Africa, trying to help famine victims. Hanna has a drinking problem and a disappointing acting career. Constance is married and lives in Limerick. Now, in the 1990s, the widowed Rosaleen has decided it's time to sell the family house. The Madigan siblings return to County Clare to spend one final Christmas together in their childhood home. 2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

The Brothers Bulger / Howie Carr

A seasoned reporter from the Boston Herald, Howie Carr presents the two Bulger brothers who for decades controlled Boston politics and organized crime. William "Billy" Bulger, president of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, wielded his political power through deal making and patronage. James J. "Whitey" Bulger, mob leader of the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang, wielded his power through racketeering, physical violence, murder, and extortion. Although William no longer holds his positions, forced to step down for failing to disclose to the FBI his brother's whereabouts, as of 2005 fugitive "Whitey" Bulger remained at large and on the FBI's "10 Most Wanted List."  Books & Authors

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

Homer and Langley / E.L Doctrow

In Homer and Langley, novelist E.L. Doctorow examines the lives of two reclusive brothers whose cloistered life is affected by some of the most profound events of the 20th century. When Langley returns home from World War I, he is forever scarred by his experiences, and he is nearly tipping over into the abyss of madness. His brother Homer, who is blind and possesses uniquely prophetic abilities, welcomes Langley into the once-grand New York City mansion in which he lives. Together, the two brothers isolate themselves from the world, but all the while, history is playing out around them and shaping them in the most surprising ways. Books & Authors

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

Vanessa and her sister / Priya Parmar

In this novel author Priya Parmar creates a fictionalized account of the complicated relationship shared by Virginia Stephen Woolf and her sister, Vanessa Stephen Bell. Told through a series of diary entries and letters, the novel explores the admiration, jealousy, and devotion that defined Virginia and Vanessa's relationship. Virginia, a writer, and Vanessa, a painter, are founding members of the Bloomsbury group. Born in the early 20th century, the London-based group brings together men and women who share a passion for art, social experimentation, and a bohemian lifestyle. But even in this free-spirited atmosphere, Virginia struggles with the complex feelings she has for Vanessa. In addition to professional jealousies, Virginia also possesses a fierce love for Vanessa that is aggravated by mental health issues. Parmar follows the Stephen sisters as Vanessa marries and becomes a mother, and Virginia eventually finds a husband in Leonard Woolf. Books & Authors

2017-2018 Sibling Rivalries

The Wright Brothers / David McCullough

In mid-December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright, brothers who ran a bicycle shop to fund their scientific pursuits, became the first people to launch a piloted aircraft and have it stay in the air for a significant period of time. That day forever changed air travel, and the Wright brothers became household names as the inventors of the first airplane and the fathers of aviation. In this book, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough describes the life and times of the Wright brothers, from their childhood in Dayton, Ohio, to their fascination with flight technology, and their determination to solve the issues that others had come up against when attempting to invent manned flight mechanisms. The author uses letters, journals, and family albums to piece together some of the most important parts of these brothers' lives
