Seven Beauties (1976) directed by Lena Wertmuller. Italian with English subtitles Rated R

Lina Wertmüller's harrowing 1976 film stars Giancarlo Giannini as a petty crook with seven unattractive sisters to support, and it features a picaresque, World War II-era journey through a prison asylum, army service, and a Nazi concentration camp. Wertmüller is more indulgent in highbrow sadomasochism than she is real profundity, but there's no denying that the film is powerful in its story of subjugation and survival. A climactic scene in which Giannini saves his skin at the camp by seducing its disgusting female commandant is unnervingly honest. Giannini became a '70s international icon partially on the basis of this work. --Tom Keogh

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Confluence: fly-fishing & friendship with Phil Odence Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Lisa Rothenberg   781-259-8465

What started as a single fly-fishing trip has evolved over 20+ years into an annual retreat to the mystical environs of Dartmouth's Second College Grant, far from the workaday world and vibrant with brotherhood, creativity and reflection.
Fishing is only a part of their story. In a collection of intertwined essays from seven unique voices, the authors reveal how their friendships have grown deeper as their lives flow into middle age, with laughs, tears and insight into the intersection between humanity and the natural world. The reader comes along to experience New England wilderness wonders, stinky outhouses, original watercolors, floods, a wine tasting, a dramatic search and rescue...and fly-fishing for native brook trout.
Phil Odence and his co-authors, the Boys of the Grant are Renaissance fisherman and Dartmouth College classmates. He is also an avid sailor, hiker, barefoot runner and watercolor artist. Phil and his family lived in Lincoln for more than a decade and spent many hours in the library. He was a long time coach and the President of Lincoln Youth Soccer. He and wife Beth are now living on Moody Street in Waltham.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase & signing.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Studio Days by Suzanne Hodes Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Suzanne Hodes   781-259-8465

My art memoir Studio Days is about the creative process as I have experienced it during 50 years as a successful artist, with work in more than 600 collections.  I share how I have combined family life and peace activism with an art career despite having serious illness starting at age 30. From the 125 images in the book, I will show several dozen as they relate to my story. My Art talk will include  images of events in our shared history:  the Kennedy and King Assassination, the attack  on 9/11, the gulf oil spill, and  my peace activism.

I describe my exhibitions, and many sources of inspiration from other artists, such as Giovanni Bellini and Philip Guston. I also write about the studio community, Artists West Studios, which I helped establish in 1980 in an empty floor of a Waltham factory building. The group “Artists for Survival,” which I co-founded in 1982, was devoted to supporting the nuclear freeze and social justice. We organized over 100 exhibitions in New England and several in Washington DC, and created the Save Life on Earth posters used in the New York City peace march in 1982.

We worked with Dr. Bernard Lown on the international Save Life on Earth catalog and with  Senator John Kerry  and  Congressman Ed Markey on our peace exhibitions in Washington DC.
