ent_note 7:00 PM  -  8:30 PM Troubadours and Troublemakers: The Music and Politics of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This presentation by Northern Essex Community College professon Kevin Comtois will examine three of the greatest protest singers of the twentieth century: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan.

Using recorded music, film clips and still images, we will take an American journey through history and geography. We will start by using music to examine the social and economic conditions of the Great Depression as we follow Woody Guthrie through the Dust Bowl. We will then travel across the United States as Woody works his way to New York City where we meet Peter Seeger. We’ll leave Woody to follow the travels of Pete as he sings his way through the American heartland, World War II, McCarthyism, the Civil Rights movement and the 1950s folk revival where we meet Bob Dylan. We will then leave Pete to examine Dylan’s songs that outlines the social and political conditions in the 60s. We will examine Dylan’s evolution to rock and roll and end with his classic performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

About the presenter: Kevin Comtois has been teaching History and Government at NECC since 1999. He has taught at Quincy College and Central Catholic High School where he also served as Social Studies Department Chair. Kevin earned his B.A. in Political Science from Westfield State College and his M.A in American Civilization from the University of Massachusetts Boston. In 2005 Kevin was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study Jazz with Dr. Gerald Early (an expert on the evolution of Jazz in America) at Washington University, St Louis. Kevin has been active in local politics since the 1990s, served as Chairman of the Tewksbury Board of Library Trustees in the 2000s, and continues as an amateur musician and songwriter. In 2011 Kevin taught an Honors Colloquium at NECC titled the Social and Political History of American music.

Freedom's Way National Heritage Area presents In Thoreau's Footsteps 2014: Thoreau's Autumnal Tints. Michael Frederick, Executive Director of The Thoreau Society, will take participants on a lively exploration of Henry David Thoreau's fascination with the New England landscape and seeing the autumn beauty that surrounds us.

"Objects are concealed from our view, not so much because they are out of the course of our visual ray as because we do not bring our minds and eyes to bear on them; for there is no power to see in the eye itself, any more than in any other jelly. We do not realize how far and widely, or how near and narrowly, we are to look. The greater part of the phenomena of Nature are for this reason concealed from us all our lives." Henry David Thoreau (Autumnal Tints, 1862)

The 25th Joe Gunther Mystery, "Proof Positive" hit library and bookstore shelves on October 1st.
