Spark A Reaction

Online Teen Summer Reading Program

Teens entering grades 6 through 12 in September are encouraged to participate in "Spark a Reaction," the Levittown Public Library's online Teen Summer Reading Program from June 16 to August 9.  Teens are invited to read and participate in activities for weekly drawing prizes as well as take part in programs offered throughout the summer.  Online sign-up begins on Monday, June 16, and you can begin logging your time right away.  Participants who complete 600 minutes of reading will receive a Certificate of Participation and receive an inviation to our End of the Summer Party, which will include a grand prize drawing.  Call or visit the Teen Lounge for more details.

Problems related to the spine are one of the most common reasons to visit a doctor.  Symptoms include low back pain, neck pain, sciatica and weakness.  Join Dr. Sanjeev Suratwala, of North Shore-LIJ Orthopaedic Institute, for an interactive session and learn about common spinal conditions and treatment options.

The Goodspeed Opera House with lunch at the Gelston House

Thursday, August 21, 2014, at 8:30 a.m.

$102.00 per person includes: bus, lunch, play and all gratuities.

Limited tickets will be on sale for Levittown UFSD residents beginning Tuesday, June 3, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Rooms 1 + 2, after 7:00 p.m. at the Reference Desk, and for non-residents, on June 10, at 9:00 a.m.  Limit two tickets per patron.

We will depart from the library at 8:30 a.m. and head to Connecticut and arrive at the Gelston House for lunch at 11:30 a.m.  The Gelston House has a spectacular scenic view of the Connecticut River.  You will have a choice of fish, chicken, beef, or pasta accompanied with a salad, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert, with coffee or tea.  You must choose your entrée when you purchase your ticket for this trip.  We will then go across the street to the historic Goodspeed Opera House, originally built in 1876 and fully restored to a majestic musical theater in 1963.  From our side orchestra seats, we will see the musical, Fiddler on the Roof, a story about Russian villagers and their longing for love, wealth and freedom, boast the beloved songs, "Matchmaker," "Sunrise Sunset," and "If I Were a Rich Man."  Around 5:00 p.m., we will board the bus and watch a movie while we ride back to the library, returning at about 8:00 p.m.

Spooky Halloween Tour

Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at 12:30 p.m.

$81.00 per person includes: bus, guided cemetery tour, buffet dinner, The Blaze, and all driver & guide gratuities.

Limited tickets will be on sale for Levittown UFSD residents beginning Thursday, July 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the Community Room, any remaining tickets will be at the Reference Desk.  Tickets for non-residents start July 17, at 9:00 a.m.  Limit four tickets per patron.  Any remaining tickets must be purchased by 5:00 p.m. August 23.

We will depart from the library at 12:30 p.m. and head for the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where we will be met by our guide for a tour through the cemetery from 2:30-3:30 p.m.  The guide will reveal the history of the cemetery and it's residents as well as the art and architecture.  We will then go to Sunset Cove Restaurant for a magnificent buffet dinner overlooking the Tappan Zee Bridge on the Hudson River with the Palisades as a back drop!  After dinner we will depart for The Blaze which has more than 5,000 individually hand-carved, illuminated jack-o'-lanterns and is set in an elaborate walk-through experience on the historic 18th-century riverside landscape at Van Cortlandt Manor.  At 8:00 p.m., we will depart to return to the library arrivng back at approximately 9:30 p.m.  Join us if you dare!

This trip involves a lot of walking on gravel/dirt pathways with slight inclines.
