lib_book_cook 6:00 PM  -  7:00 PM Tales You Can Taste Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
Contact: Mary Ann Ware   141   maware@lincolnlib.org

Tales You Can Taste is a book club for foodies. Books discussed either have a food theme or feature a different culture with a unique cusine of its own. It is held once a month at Martin's Supermarket in Stevensville on the upper floor of its Side Door Deli Cafe. Book are available first at the previous month meeting, then at the library's front desk the next day.

At 7:15 p.m., if you would like to take your experience with the book one step further, Martin's offers an optional companion food demonstration/meal for a $20 fee. The food and recipes are inspired by that month's book selection. Those interested in attending it should contact Martin's to register.

This month's selection is The Kitchen Counter Cooking school by Kathleen Flinn.

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, writer Kathleen Flinn returned with no idea what to do next, until one day at a supermarket she watched a woman loading her cart with ultraprocessed foods. Flinn's "chefternal" instinct kicked in: she persuaded the stranger to reload with fresh foods, offering her simple recipes for healthy, easy meals. The Kitchen Counter Cooking School includes practical, healthy tips that boost readers' culinary self-confidence, and strategies to get the most from their grocery dollar, and simple recipes that get readers cooking.

'Tween Tomes Book Club is for kids in the 4th -6th grades you like food, fun, and great books. It is held once a month on the third Thursday during the school year. A wide range of books are used, everything from classics to the best in modern reads. Free copies of each book are made available as a gift from the Friends of the Lincoln Township Library.

March's book is the Newberry Award Winner, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brien.

Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, is faced with a terrible problem. She must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma. And Mrs. Frisby in turn renders them a great service.

This month's selection is Delicious: A Novel by famed food critic Ruth Reichl.

Billie Breslin has traveled far from her home in California to take a job at Delicious!, New York’s most iconic food magazine. Billie feels like a fish out of water—until she is welcomed by the magazine’s colorful staff. She is also seduced by the vibrant downtown food scene, especially by Fontanari’s, the famous Italian food shop where she works on weekends. Then Delicious! is abruptly shut down, but Billie agrees to stay on in the empty office, maintaining the hotline for reader complaints in order to pay her bills.

To Billie’s surprise, the lonely job becomes the portal to a miraculous discovery. In a hidden room in the magazine’s library, Billie finds a cache of letters written during World War II by Lulu Swan, a plucky twelve-year-old, to the legendary chef James Beard. Lulu’s letters provide Billie with a richer understanding of history, and a feeling of deep connection to the young writer whose courage in the face of hardship inspires Billie to comes to terms with her fears, her big sister and her ability to open her heart to love.

The food and recipes are inspired by that month's book selection. Those interested in attending it should contact Martin's to register.

This month's selection is Stealing Buddha's Dinner by Bin Ninh Nguyen.

As a Vietnamese girl coming of age in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Nguyen is filled with a rapacious hunger for American identity, and in the pre-PC-era Midwest (where the Jennifers and Tiffanys reign supreme), the desire to belong transmutes into a passion for American food. More exotic- seeming than her Buddhist grandmother's traditional specialties, the campy, preservative-filled "delicacies" of mainstream America capture her imagination.
