This book discussion at L.Woods features: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain:

A ferocious firefight with Iraqi insurgents at 'the battle of Al-Ansakar Canal', three minutes and forty-three seconds of intense warfare caught on tape by an embedded Fox News crew, has transformed the eight surviving men of Bravo Squad into America's most sought-after heroes. For the past two weeks, the Bush administration has sent them on a media-intensive nationwide Victory Tour to reinvigorate public support for the war.  Now, on this chilly and rainy Thanksgiving, the Bravos are guests of America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys, slated to be part of the halftime show alongside the superstar pop group Destiny's Child.  Poignant, riotously funny, and exquisitely heartbreaking, this novel is a devastating portrait of our time.

    Contact: Information Services Department   847-677-5277 x230   infoservices@lincolnwoodlibrary.org

This book discussion at the Lincolnwood Community Center features Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradahl:

The day chef Lars Thorvald becomes a father is the happiest day of his life. The day his wife, Cynthia, leaves him for Hutmacher’s restaurant’s new sommelier is his worst. Raising baby Eva on his own is a challenge, sure, but one Lars embraces with typical foodie fervor, focusing on providing only the freshest, locally sourced, and made-from-scratch meals for Eva. Unfortunately, the pressure of single parenting does him in, and orphaned Eva is left in the care of her Dorito-devouring aunt and uncle. But those early years with Lars leave their mark, and Eva grows up to be the country’s hottest young chef. Her concept of $5,000-a-plate pop-up dinners set in exotic locations garners her fans, mystique, and attention, including that of the mother who abandoned her, who wrangles a ticket to Eva’s dinner in hopes of finally getting to know her child. If food is love, then Stradal’s tasty tale is the ultimate homage to the merits of the culinary experience, with just a soupçon of überfoodie-culture satire thrown in for a bit of zest.

Join Lincolnwood Library at Lincolnwood Place for "Playing in the Bluegrass," an interactive musical presentation by Colby Maddox. Colby Maddox shares how bluegrass music began as a cure for the modern sorrows that came with working in the new industrial centers of the early twentieth century, and demonstrates some of the musical elements that make bluegrass bands tick.

Colby teaches at the Old Town School of Folk Music now, and in 2006 he won first prize at the Rocky Grass mandolin competition in Lyons, Colorado. He performs regularly with his band, Sunnyside Up, and recent side projects include playing on the soundtrack for the recent PBS documentary The Hayloft Gang: The Story of the National Barn Dance, narrated by Garrison Keillor and singing on the soundtrack for the Newberry Library's Homemakers of the Civil War: Sheet Music.

This book discussion at L.Woods features The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr:

Karr (The Liars’ Club), the author of three lauded memoirs, teaches a selective memoir writing graduate class at Syracuse University, and offers her wisdom in this instructive guide to the genre.  Not only does Karr write exquisitely herself, she clearly adores memoirs; the appendix of nearly 200 suggested memoirs is a delightful and useful bonus.  The text is a must-read for memoirists, but will also appeal to memoir lovers and all who are curious about how books evolve.  For writers in particular, Karr covers such essential topics as the quest for truth (probing its elusive nature), finding one’s own “true” voice of “you-ness,” the crucial process of revision, evoking the five senses, and how to deal with family and others who play major parts in the memoir.  As if auditing her class, readers learn from her commentary on the memoirs of Vladimir Nabokov, Michael Herr, Frank McCourt, Hilary Mantel, and others.  Karr lends her characteristic trueness and “you-ness” to the subject of writing memoirs, wisely (and quite often humorously) guiding readers in their understanding and experience of the art.

This book discussion at the Lincolnwood Community Center features The Dream Lover by Elizabeth Berg:

This work marks best-selling writer Berg’s first major venture into biographical historical fiction, a move that’s partly successful. Her subject is exciting and on-trend: George Sand, the nineteenth-century French writer whose insightful novels took readers by storm, and whose cross-dressing persona and many love affairs scandalized contemporary society. Born Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin in 1804, she lived by her own rules, and her imagined voice—warm, sincere, and wise—is wonderfully disarming. As Sand examines her past, from her tense relationships with blood relations through her unhappy marriage and subsequent flight to independence in Paris, we’re introduced to this fascinating woman. Berg’s descriptive skills are remarkable throughout, but Sand’s actions are too often reported from a distance rather than dramatized. This memoir-like style lets us learn about and admire Sand without placing us in the moment with her. There are exceptions, though, such as her scenes with actress Marie Dorval—her deepest, most passionate attachment—and her philosophical reflections on her continued search for love. It’s at these times that her story feels most immediate and alive.
