This sweeping account of the life of Pu-Yi, the last emperor of China, follows the leader's tumultuous reign. After being captured by the Red Army as a war criminal in 1950, Pu-Yi recalls his childhood from prison. He remembers his lavish youth in the Forbidden City, where he was afforded every luxury but unfortunately sheltered from the outside world and complex political situation surrounding him. As revolution sweeps through China, the world Pu-Yi knew is dramatically upended (IMDb).

(PG-13, 2 hr. 43 min.)

We are pleased to offer this program in conjunction with Coming Together: Celebrating Chinese Culture.

NEW TIME at 7:00 PM!

Registration required (open January 23).

This book discussion at LINCOLNWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY features The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

The winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, as well as six other awards, The Sympathizer is the breakthrough novel of the year. With the pace and suspense of a thriller and prose that has been compared to Graham Greene and Saul Bellow, The Sympathizer is a blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping espionage novel, and a powerful story of love and friendship. The narrator, a communist double agent, is a “man of two minds,” a half-French, half-Vietnamese army captain who arranges to come to America after the Fall of Saigon.

Location Moved: AT THE LINCOLNWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY!
