We all have a novel inside of us. It’s that story burning to be told. Hazelgrove tells the secrets and method to get started on that idea and keep at it through the first draft and subsequent revisions. He also covers the “ins-and-outs” of getting published, sharing stories of paperback auctions, movie options and his first big contract.

Stick around after the presentation to purchase a signed copy of Hazelgrove's new novel The Pitcher, a Junior Library Guild Selection for Fall 2014.

lib_book_bunch1 11:00 AM  -  12:00 PM Book Discussion: Life After Life by Kate Atkinson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact: Community Engagment Department   847-677-5277 x 232   events@lincolnwoodlibrary.org

The adult book discussion features Life After Life by Kate Atkinson.

Atkinson delivers a wildly inventive novel about Ursula Todd, born in 1910 and doomed to die and be reborn over and over again. She drowns, falls off a roof, and is beaten to death by an abusive husband but is always reborn back into the same loving family, sometimes with the knowledge that allows her to escape past poor decisions, sometimes not. As Atkinson subtly delineates all the pathways a life or a country might take, she also delivers a harrowing set piece on the Blitz as Ursula, working as a warden on a rescue team, encounters horrifying tableaux encompassing mangled bodies and whole families covered in ash, preserved just like the victims of Pompeii. Alternately mournful and celebratory, deeply empathic and scathingly funny, Atkinson shows what it is like to face the horrors of war and yet still find the determination to go on, with her wholly British characters often reducing the Third Reich to “a fuss.” From her deeply human characters to her comical dialogue to her meticulous plotting, Atkinson is working at the very top of her game. An audacious, thought-provoking novel from one of our most talented writers.

    Contact: Adult Services Department   847-677-5277 x 230   adultservices@lincolnwoodlibrary.org

This book discussion at L.Woods features Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer.

If you sometimes can’t remember where you put your car keys or, like Foer, the car itself, don’t panic. You’re not alone, and you can do something about it. In this intriguing look at the nature of memory, Foer reassures us that we don’t need to acquire a better memory; we just need to use the one we have more effectively. Foer introduces us to people whose memories are both astonishing, like the man who could memorize 1,528 random digits in order, and frightening, such as a man with such an extreme case of amnesia that he doesn’t know his own age and can’t remember that he has a memory problem. He explores various ways in which we test our memories, such as the extensive training British cabbies must undergo. He also discusses ways we can train ourselves to have better memories, like the PAO system, in which, for example, every card in a deck is associated with an image of a specific person, action, or object. An engaging, informative, and for the forgetful, encouraging book.
