This book discussion at 90 Miles Cuban Cafe features: A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash.

A church committed to handling poisonous snakes during worship services is the catalyst for tragedy in this debut novel. Pastor Carson Chambliss, horribly burned in a meth lab explosion, honed his preaching skills in a Georgia prison, but now he has a small North Carolina congregation in his thrall. He decides that a laying on of hands will cure an autistic boy, but instead his efforts lead to the boy’s death and the destruction of a family. Cash employs three characters as narrators: Jess is the autistic boy’s protective nine-year-old younger brother; Adelaide Lyle, an aged local midwife; and the county sheriff, who is drawn into the tragedy. Jess’ narration is appropriately limited by his age and innocence. The county sheriff is taciturn, but Adelaide is voluble, a true southern storyteller, and her narration provides context that allows the novel to work and burnishes a compelling sense of rural place. Cash is a graceful and promising writer, and his story and characters will linger in readers’ memories.

This book discussion at L.Woods features: The Children Act by Ian McEwan.

Fiona Maye is a long-standing and well-respected British High Court judge in the Family Division. She is renowned for her fierce intelligence, exactitude and sensitivity. But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic strife, intensified when she is assigned the central case of this novel. Adam is a seventeen-year-old boy who is refusing, for religious reasons, the medical treatment that could save his life. His devout parents echo his wishes. Should the secular court overrule sincerely expressed faith? Fiona’s judgment has momentous consequences for both Adam and herself.

This book discussion at 90 Miles Cuban Cafe features: A Spool of Blue Thread by Anne Tyler.

In her twentieth gleaming novel, Tyler is as fleet and graceful as a skater, her prose as transparent as ice, dazzling qualities that distract us, initially, from just how profoundly dimensional a tale this is. We get swept up in the spin of conversations, the slipstream of consciousness, and the glide and dip of domestic life, then feel the sting of Tyler’s quick and cutting insights into unjust assumptions about class, gender, age, and race. Abby and Red Whitshank worry about Denny, their ever-mysterious son. Their other, more accountable grown offspring live nearby with their children, and Jeannie and the son nicknamed “Stem” work for Red, who carried forward his father Junior’s construction company. Retired social worker Abby and Red still live in the handsome, obsessively well-constructed house Junior built for a wealthy client, then slyly managed to make his own. During chaotic family gatherings, disorienting crises, and abrupt domestic reconfigurations (all subtly laced with motifs of blue and Wizard of Oz allusions), simmering resentments and secrets bubble up. Tyler then whirls back in time to tell Abby’s story and, most strikingly, that of Linnie Mae, her deceptively serene mother-in-law. Junior’s fervent respect for wood and craftsmanship reflects Tyler’s long dedication to language and story, an artistic practice made perfect in this charming, funny, and shrewd novel of the paradoxes of self, family, and home.

This book discussion at the Lincolnwood Community Center features Dead Wake by Erik Larson:

The sinking of the British ocean liner Lusitania in 1915 is one of a trio (including the iceberg-wounded Titanic in 1912 and the Italian liner Andrea Doria, which collided with another liner on the high seas in 1956) of the most dramatic and most remembered maritime disasters of the twentieth century. With the narrative skills shown so effectively in his The Devil in the White City (2003), a lively account of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair, Larson reconstructs the last and fatal voyage of what was widely considered the most beautiful ship of the day, the giant four-stacker Lusitania. Reader engrossment is tightly sustained as we move back and forth between the Lusitania on its return from New York City to its home port of Liverpool under a black cloud of warnings that the imperial German government considered the waters around Britain to be a war zone, and the rapacious German submarine U-20, stalking the seas for prey like a lion on the Serengeti. Factual and personal to a high degree, the narrative reads like a grade-A thriller.

This book discussion at L.Woods features: Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain:

A ferocious firefight with Iraqi insurgents at 'the battle of Al-Ansakar Canal', three minutes and forty-three seconds of intense warfare caught on tape by an embedded Fox News crew, has transformed the eight surviving men of Bravo Squad into America's most sought-after heroes. For the past two weeks, the Bush administration has sent them on a media-intensive nationwide Victory Tour to reinvigorate public support for the war.
