    Contact: Community Engagement Department   847-677-5277 x 232   events@lincolnwoodlibrary.org

The adult book discussion features The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin.

In this sweet, uplifting homage to bookstores, Zevin perfectly captures the joy of connecting people and books. A. J. Fikry, the cantankerous owner of Island Books, is despondent after losing his beloved wife and witnessing the ever-declining number of sales at his small, quirky bookstore. In short order, he loses all patience with the new Knightly Press sales rep, his prized rare edition of Tamerlane is stolen, and someone leaves a baby at his store. That baby immediately steals A. J.’s heart and unleashes a dramatic transformation. Suddenly, the picture-book section is overflowing with new titles, and the bookstore becomes home to a burgeoning number of book clubs. With business on the uptick and love in his heart, A. J. finds himself becoming an essential new part of his longtime community, going so far as to woo the aforementioned sales rep (who loves drinking Queequeg cocktails at the Pequod Restaurant). Filled with interesting characters, a deep knowledge of bookselling, wonderful critiques of classic titles, and very funny depictions of book clubs and author events, this will prove irresistible to book lovers everywhere.

This book discussion at L.Woods features Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize when it was first published in 1971, Angle of Repose has also been selected by the editorial board of the Modern Library as one of the hundred best novels of the twentieth century.

The poetic title is actually a geological term for the slope at which rocks cease to roll and is used here as a symbol of human life. Time is the protagonist and a tragically crippled but talented man, himself past middle age, explores through his grandmother's drawings, letters, and publications her life with her engineer husband in his struggle to use his talents in a time not quite ready for him. It is also an objective yet affectionate look at a long-ago love and failure of love which the protagonist associates with his own love and its tragedy. Stegner's integrity of vision is evident again in his respect for the victories and failures that surround the search for a vision.

The adult book discussion features The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.

A long journey from home and the struggle to find it again form the heart of the intertwined stories that make up this moving novel. Foster teen Molly is performing community-service work for elderly widow Vivian, and as they go through Vivian’s cluttered attic, they discover that their lives have much in common. When Vivian was a girl, she was taken to a new life on an orphan train. These trains carried children to adoptive families for 75 years, from the mid-nineteenth century to the start of the Great Depression. Novelist Kline (Bird in Hand, 2009) brings Vivian’s hardscrabble existence in Depression-era Minnesota to stunning life. Molly’s present-day story in Maine seems to pale in comparison, but as we listen to the two characters talk, we find grace and power in both of these seemingly disparate lives. Although the girls are vulnerable, left to the whims of strangers, they show courage and resourcefulness. Kline illuminates a largely hidden chapter of American history, while portraying the coming-of-age of two resilient young women.

The adult book discussion features Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen.

Rebecca Winter was once a famous photographer, and, with any luck, she will be again. Having achieved surprising early success with her feminist “Kitchen Counter” collection, Rebecca, now 60, finds herself on fame and fortune’s flip side. With her former torrent of royalties dwindling to a trickle, Rebecca has been forced to give up her perfect Manhattan apartment for a paltry upstate cabin, and with marauding raccoons, stray dogs, and trigger-happy hunters, life in the country is proving to be no walk in Central Park. Luckily, Rebecca still has her camera, and she soon finds inspiration for new work in unexpected places, often in the company of a bird-watching roofer named Jim, whose quiet companionship proves to be just the balm she needs to fully embrace her unfamiliar surroundings. A Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist and star in the pantheon of domestic fiction (Every Last One, 2010), Quindlen presents instantly recognizable characters who may be appealingly warm and nonthreatening, but that only serves to drive home her potent message that it’s never too late to embrace life’s second chances.

This book discussion at L.Woods features And the Dark Sacred Night by Julia Glass

Living with his unknown paternity has always been a struggle for Kit Noonan. But now that he's 40, married and the father of 9-year-old twins, Kit finds that his unhappily stalled life demands once and for all that he get answers. Who did his mother pair up with all those summers ago when she was a 17-year-old cellist at an illustrious music camp in Vermont? At his wife's urging, Kit grudgingly embarks on a journey of self-discovery, following the well-meaning advice of his stepfather and others and eventually throwing open the locked closet of his father's identity. Deftly weaving together narrative flashbacks from rural Vermont in the 1920s and '60s with contemporary threads set in New Jersey, Cape Cod and New York City, Glass's fifth novel warns us that "promises to keep secrets, those are the trickiest ones - especially when they're secrets you don't even know you've been keeping." And the Dark Sacred Night is a tender, insightful and winning exploration of the modern family and the infinite number of shapes it can take.
