Beginning his career in Mexico City in 1957, Plácido Domingo made his New York City Opera debut in 1965 and his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1968, establishing himself as a different though equally great tenor to his contemporary Luciano Pavarotti. With an astonishing vocal range and power, Domingo at this point has sung more than 135 roles and is still adding new ones! He has sung in multiple languages and has mastered some of the most demanding roles of Verdi (Don Carlos, Don Alvaro, Radames, and Otello) and Wagner (Lohengrin, Tannhauser, Siegmund, Tristan) as well as singing numerous other works in Spanish, English, French and Russian. This presentation will examine some highlights of his career through audio and video excerpts.

misc_none 2:00 PM Visual Art Lecture with Thomas Germano: MAX BECKMANN IN NEW YORK Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The German artist Max Beckmann (1884-1950) was a painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Beckmann enjoyed great success and official honors during the Weimar Republic. Beckmann's fortunes changed with the rise to power of Adolf Hitler, whose dislike of Modern Art quickly led to its suppression by the state. In 1933, the Nazi government dismissed Beckmann from his Art School teaching position in Frankfurt. In 1937 more than 500 of his works were confiscated from German museums, and more works by Beckmann than any other artist were included on display in the notorious Degenerate Art Exhibition in Munich. For ten years, Beckmann lived in poverty and self-imposed exile in Amsterdam. After the war, Beckmann moved to the United States in 1947 where he lived for the last years of his life.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will feature the exhibition Max Beckmann in New York (October 19-February 20, 2017) focusing on the last sixteen months of the artist's life while also showing 25 works from 1920-48 in New York collections.
