misc_none 2:00 PM A DAY AT THE OPERA with Dr. Kolb: CARMEN Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Music by Georges Bizet; libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac

One of the ten most frequently produced operas over the past century, Carmen also pioneered a new approach to opera—one in which realism played a far greater role. Set in Seville in the early 19th Century, Carmen tells the story of an attractive Gypsy who works in a cigarette factory and is flirtatious with numerous men, including the young soldier, Don José and the toreador, Escamillo, among others. Tempers frequently flare, and a fickle love leads to a tragic ending when Don José loses Carmen to Escamillo.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:30 PM Coffee House Book Talk: DEAD WAKE, by Eric Larson Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

This is the Long Island Reads Book Selection for 2017   Book Leader: Janet deWinter    Refreshments will be served.

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitaniawas one of the era’s great transatlantic “Greyhounds”—the fastest liner then in service—and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack.
