Join us for a workshop on Energy Basics:  How it's measured, how it works, the cost of different energy sources for electricity, home heating & cooling and Energy Efficiency: "Vampires" in the home, easy conservation steps & tools. The Mansfield Library warmly welcomes Mark Durrenberger of New England Clean Energy to host this free workshop.

You won’t find many nuclear engineers selling solar panels, but then New England Clean Energy President Mark Durrenberger is not your average guy. Before forming New England Clean Energy (originally called New England Breeze), Mark’s varied career path included nuclear engineering, information technology, program management, and management consulting. Through all these career phases, he was itching to make a change in the world by helping to slow the effects of global climate change. He brought his vision to fruition with New England Clean Energy, which has put more solar on Massachusetts homes than any other local company since being founded in 2006. In 2007, Mark was trained by Al Gore to deliver “An Inconvenient Truth”, Gore’s climate change presentation. Mark has since delivered the presentation some 30 times to more than 1,400 people. Mark is certified by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) as a Photovoltaic Technical Sales Professional, and he serves as treasurer of the Solar Energy Business Association of New England (SEBANE). In 2012, he was named Worcester Business Journal’s Small Business Leader of the Year. He has a Masters of Science in Energy Engineering and a Bachelors of Science in Nuclear Engineering, both from the University of Lowell (now UMass Lowell). Mark lives and works in Hudson, and is very active in the community.

This month we will be discussing The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure.

"In 1942 Paris, gifted architect Lucien Bernard accepts a commission that will bring him a great deal of money and maybe get him killed. But if he's clever enough, he'll avoid any trouble. All he has to do is design a secret hiding place for a wealthy Jewish man, a space so invisible that even the most determined German officer won't find it. He sorely needs the money, and outwitting the Nazis who have occupied his beloved city is a challenge he can't resist.

But when one of his hiding spaces fails horribly, and the problem of where to hide a Jew becomes terribly personal, Lucien can no longer ignore what's at stake. The Paris Architect asks us to consider what we owe each other, and just how far we'll go to make things right.

Written by an architect whose knowledge imbues every page, this story becomes more gripping with every soul hidden and every life saved."

What happens when our stuff starts to own us? Why can’t we just throw things away? With his upbeat and unique approach, Dave Downs explores the many reasons that our draws, closets and garages get filled with STUFF. Downs offers helpful hints for managing this difficult problem. Dave uses colorful stories throughout the talk to engage as well as inform the audience. You may recognize a part of yourself in these stories. Participants will leave knowing that if we are thoughtful about what we acquire; what we keep and what we discard, we will start to reverse the tendency to bury ourselves in “treasures!”

This month we will be discussing Circling the Sun by Paula McLain.

"Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller "The Paris Wife, " now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. "Circling the Sun" brings to life a fearless and captivating woman Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir "Out of Africa."

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature s delicate balance.

Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit."

Join us for a free concert at the library! Singer/songwriters Gayle Anderson Gram and Bob Gram are a well-seasoned, artistically-polished folk duo. Their voices blend perfectly, and their sensitive guitar accompaniments are thoughtful, interesting, and balanced.  Anderson-Gram achieves a style of communication with the audience that is completely natural, and their clever lyrics and wit add to a very satisfying entertainment experience.
