misc_none Blind Date with a Book     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Amy Rosa   508-261-7380   arosa@sailsinc.org

Do you like surprises? Would you like help deciding what to read next? Want to take away the distraction of cover art? Let us take away the trouble of a decision and set you up with a date. Go on a Blind Date with a book!

For the month of February, we will have a special display in the library with a wide variety of books, wrapped up in ‘oh so secretive’ wrapping paper and you won’t know the ‘identity’ of your blind date till you get it home. Will it be fiction or non-fiction? Funny, informative, a mystery, true-crime? The possibilities are endless. You may choose any wrapped book in our “Blind Date with a Book” display. Also included with the books are a fun questionnaire that you can fill out and return either with the book or to the reference librarian.

Why not give yourself a special surprise this month, take home that blind date and enjoy yourself?

This month we will be discussing One Plus One by Jojo Moyes.

"One single mom. One chaotic family. One quirky stranger. One irresistible love story from a "New York Times" bestselling author.

Suppose your life sucks. A lot. Your husband has done a vanishing act, your teenage stepson is being bullied, and your math whiz daughter has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you can t afford to pay for. That's Jess' life in a nutshell until an unexpected knight in shining armor offers to rescue them. Only Jess' knight turns out to be Geeky Ed, the obnoxious tech millionaire whose vacation home she happens to clean. But Ed has big problems of his own, and driving the dysfunctional family to the Math Olympiad feels like his first unselfish act in ages...maybe ever.

"One Plus One" is Jojo Moyes at her astounding best. You ll laugh, you ll weep, and when you flip the last page, you ll want to start all over again."

This month we will be discussing The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro.

"Claire Roth, an accomplished painter in her own right, uses her skills to paint forgeries for Repro.com. She hates to do it, but she's very good at it and the money allows her to pay her bills, just barely.

Shapiro artfully weaves three separate tales to tell the story of the art forger. The first is about Claire; the second is a flashback story about Claire and her lover; and finally, there is an epistolary narrative involving letters by art patron Isabella Stewart Gardner to her (fictional) niece Amelia in the 1880s-90s, when Gardner was in Paris looking for artworks to acquire and for artists--including Degas--to meet and befriend (true).

All the threads intertwine as Shapiro deftly takes on the role of magician, dazzling us with ingenious slights of hand and a narrative juggling act. Watching her bring all the pieces together makes for an exciting and very pleasurable read."

This month we will be discussing Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian.

"When Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Aleppo, Syria, she has a diploma from Mount Holyoke, a crash course in nursing, and only the most basic grasp of the Armenian language. It s 1915, and Elizabeth has volunteered to help deliver food and medical aid to refugees of the Armenian Genocide during the First World War. There she meets Armen, a young Armenian engineer who has already lost his wife and infant daughter. After leaving Aleppo and traveling into Egypt to join the British Army, he begins to write Elizabeth letters, realizing that he has fallen in love with the wealthy young American.
Years later, their American granddaughter, Laura, embarks on a journey back through her family s history, uncovering a story of love, loss and a wrenching secret that has been buried for generations."

This month we will be discussing The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure.

"In 1942 Paris, gifted architect Lucien Bernard accepts a commission that will bring him a great deal of money and maybe get him killed. But if he's clever enough, he'll avoid any trouble. All he has to do is design a secret hiding place for a wealthy Jewish man, a space so invisible that even the most determined German officer won't find it. He sorely needs the money, and outwitting the Nazis who have occupied his beloved city is a challenge he can't resist.

But when one of his hiding spaces fails horribly, and the problem of where to hide a Jew becomes terribly personal, Lucien can no longer ignore what's at stake. The Paris Architect asks us to consider what we owe each other, and just how far we'll go to make things right.

Written by an architect whose knowledge imbues every page, this story becomes more gripping with every soul hidden and every life saved."

This month we will be discussing Circling the Sun by Paula McLain.

"Paula McLain, author of the phenomenal bestseller "The Paris Wife, " now returns with her keenly anticipated new novel, transporting readers to colonial Kenya in the 1920s. "Circling the Sun" brings to life a fearless and captivating woman Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir "Out of Africa."

Brought to Kenya from England as a child and then abandoned by her mother, Beryl is raised by both her father and the native Kipsigis tribe who share his estate. Her unconventional upbringing transforms Beryl into a bold young woman with a fierce love of all things wild and an inherent understanding of nature s delicate balance.

Set against the majestic landscape of early-twentieth-century Africa, McLain s powerful tale reveals the extraordinary adventures of a woman before her time, the exhilaration of freedom and its cost, and the tenacity of the human spirit."
