Mansfield Public Library is pleased to announce our third annual One Book One Community Mansfield 2017! In March of 2017 we will be hosting our community-wide read. This year’s selection will be The Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner.

Like the golden threads of a scarf sprinkled with marigolds, Susan Meissner weaves two unspeakable New York tragedies—the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and 9/11—into a shimmering novel of love and acceptance. Meissner’s heroines, Clara and Taryn, live a century apart, but their stories are connected not just by a bright scrap of fabric but by love lost. The Fall of Marigolds goes back and forth between the two main characters in September 1911 and September 2011.

We invite you all to take part in reading the book, meeting the author, visiting our discussions, and participating in any other events. We have 25 events going on in collaboration with our Community Read this year including televised readings from the book by local faces in town on Mansfield Cable Access, a live Skype session with the author of the book, an Archival Workshop, an Irish Concert, a Bereavement program, a new library Knitting Group kick-off, Book Discussions, Movie Nights, Crafts and Coding programs, themed story times and much more!  A full list of events and event details are available on our event calendar at mansfieldlibraryma.com or you can stop by the library to pick up a schedule of events. We are looking forward to getting the community engaged once again in this year’s One Book One Community Mansfield.

Libraries throughout Massachusetts and the country host community reads, promoting literacy and togetherness by sharing the same book read from a wide variety of perspectives. Come in to the library to pick up a copy of the book or place it on hold today by visiting the SAILS catalog at www.sailsinc.org. The library will gladly accept donations of copies in good condition.

For more information on this program or any other adult or teen program at the library, please contact Amy Rosa, Reference/Teen Librarian, at (508) 261-7380 or email arosa@sailsinc.org.

Come to your local library for a Thursday night movie showing. The Mansfield Public Library hosts monthly bestselling movie showings from 6pm to 8pm. This month’s movie is a special documentary on Ellis Island presented by PBS. "Visit the abandoned immigrant hospital on Ellis Island. During the great wave of immigration, 22 medical buildings sprawled across two islands adjacent to Ellis Island, the largest port of entry to the United States. Massive and modern, the hospital was America's first line of defense against contagious, often virulent, disease. In the era before antibiotics, tens of thousands of immigrant patients were separated from family, detained in the hospital and healed from illness before becoming citizens." Mansfield Library warmly welcomes Jumpin' Juba Band to perform at the library for a FREE concert on Saturday April 8 at 2pm.

Jumpin' Juba mixes regional blues from Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans together with roots-y rock & roll, jazz, calypso, and Latin flavors. This trio (guitar, piano, drums) features Steve Hurl (guitars, vocal), whose playing draws from the great acoustic blues fingerpickers, and from the blues-y string benders of the 1950s. Bruce Ward's burly piano work recalls such greats as Prof. Longhair, Otis Spann, and Albert Ammons. The band's two CD releases ( Bumpity Bump and Slap Happy) have received regional and overseas airplay, and have garnered many favorable reviews in MA papers and on the web. Jumpin' Juba mixes blues and roots-y rock styles from Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans. Great piano and guitar! Originals and covers. This event is free and open to all ages! No registration is required. Come on by and enjoy an afternoon of upbeat music!

During the course of history, the First Ladies of America have been watched, admired, copied, sometimes criticized, and followed for their fashion and style. Join us for a look at the clothing and accessories worn by our presidents’ wives, as we journey through time from our earliest first lady to our current president’s wife, Michelle Obama. We will examine the ladies who changed the course of fashion as well as those who had little or no effect whatsoever.

The Mansfield Public Library warmly welcomes back Karen (Ren) Antonowicz to host this fun event on dress & style of the First Ladies of America. Ren and her husband Mike own Nostalgia on Wickenden St. in Providence, RI. In addition to teaching Fashion History classes in RISD's CE program, Ren holds lectures at her store as well as libraries, senior centers, and historical societies. A certified style coach, Ren specializes in teaching others how to dress authentically.
