    Contact: Amy Rosa   508-261-7380   arosa@sailsinc.org

Do you like surprises? Would you like help deciding what to read next? Want to take away the distraction of cover art? Let us take away the trouble of a decision and set you up with a date. Go on a Blind Date with a book!

For the month of February, we will have a special display in the library with a wide variety of books, wrapped up in ‘oh so secretive’ wrapping paper and you won’t know the ‘identity’ of your blind date till you get it home. Will it be fiction or non-fiction? Funny, informative, a mystery, true-crime? The possibilities are endless. You may choose any wrapped book in our “Blind Date with a Book” display. Also included with the books is a fun questionnaire that you can fill out and return either with the book or to the reference librarian. Come on in and check it out!

Mansfield Public Library is pleased to announce our third annual One Book One Community Mansfield 2017! In March of 2017 we will be hosting our community-wide read. This year’s selection will be The Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner.

Like the golden threads of a scarf sprinkled with marigolds, Susan Meissner weaves two unspeakable New York tragedies—the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and 9/11—into a shimmering novel of love and acceptance. Meissner’s heroines, Clara and Taryn, live a century apart, but their stories are connected not just by a bright scrap of fabric but by love lost. The Fall of Marigolds goes back and forth between the two main characters in September 1911 and September 2011.

We invite you all to take part in reading the book, meeting the author, visiting our discussions, and participating in any other events. We have 25 events going on in collaboration with our Community Read this year including televised readings from the book by local faces in town on Mansfield Cable Access, a live Skype session with the author of the book, an Archival Workshop, an Irish Concert, a Bereavement program, a new library Knitting Group kick-off, Book Discussions, Movie Nights, Crafts and Coding programs, themed story times and much more!  A full list of events and event details are available on our event calendar at mansfieldlibraryma.com or you can stop by the library to pick up a schedule of events. We are looking forward to getting the community engaged once again in this year’s One Book One Community Mansfield.

Libraries throughout Massachusetts and the country host community reads, promoting literacy and togetherness by sharing the same book read from a wide variety of perspectives. Come in to the library to pick up a copy of the book or place it on hold today by visiting the SAILS catalog at www.sailsinc.org. The library will gladly accept donations of copies in good condition.

For more information on this program or any other adult or teen program at the library, please contact Amy Rosa, Reference/Teen Librarian, at (508) 261-7380 or email arosa@sailsinc.org.

Come to your local library for a Thursday night movie showing. The Mansfield Public Library hosts monthly bestselling movie showings from 6pm to 8pm. This month’s movie is rated R and stars Adam Sandler, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler and Donald Sutherland. "A chance run-in with an old college roommate becomes the catalyst for healing in writer/director Mike Binder's tale of friendship and understanding in post-9/11 New York. When the Twin Towers went down on that fateful morning in 2001, Charlie Fineman lost everything that he had to live for. Five years have passed since Charlie lost his family, and now the once-successful and sociable man has become a withdrawn shadow of his former self. When fate brings Charlie and his former college roommate Alan Johnson together once again on a Manhattan street corner, Alan is shocked to see just how far his old friend has fallen. Though on the surface it would appear that Alan has it all, the pressures of his family and career have been weighing heavily on the successful dentist and loving father's shoulders as of late. At that pivotal moment when Charlie and Alan both need a trusted friend to help them work through the seemingly insurmountable challenges they face in life, the restorative power of a rekindled friendship provides just the lifeline needed to move forward into the future with hope and optimism." Contact the library for this month’s title or come in and check out the flyer! This program is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.

Join our newest book club at the library! This book club will focus on nonfiction works. This month's title is American Passage: The History of Ellis Island by Vincent Cannato. "Ellis Island had been an obscure little island that barely held itself above high tide. Today it stands alongside Plymouth Rock in our nation's founding mythology as the place where many of our ancestors first touched American soil. Ellis Island's heyday--from 1892 to 1924--coincided with one of the greatest mass movements of individuals the world has ever seen, with some twelve million immigrants inspected at its gates. Historian Vincent J. Cannato illuminates the story of Ellis Island, from the 19th century days when it hosted pirate hangings, to the turn of the 20th century when massive migrations sparked fierce debate and hopeful new immigrants often encountered corruption, harsh conditions, and political scheming. Accounts of immigrants, officials, interpreters, and social reformers all play a role in the chronicle. Long after Ellis Island ceased to be the nation's preeminent immigrant inspection station, the debates that swirled around it are still relevant." Please register below.

Julie Berry (julieberrybooks.com) is the author of All the Truth That's in Me, The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow PlaceSecondhand CharmThe Amaranth Enchantment, and the Splurch Academy series. She lives in Los Angeles, CA. Her most recent book A 2017 Michael L. Printz Honor Award winner, THE PASSION OF DOLSSA was also named a New York Times Notable Book, and a Best Book of the Year by Publishers Weekly, Booklist, Horn Book, and School Library Journal. Berry, the acclaimed author of All the Truth That’s In Me, was inspired to write this audacious novel while listening to a college lecture she had found online about medieval France. Fascinated, Berry began a two-year dive into research on the era, learning about the lives of several medieval female mystics like Clare of Assisi, Marguerite Porete, and Catherine of Siena, women who rejected marriage, almost unheard of at the time, and bucked the authority of the church with their own religious visions.

Come to your local library for a Thursday night movie showing. The Mansfield Public Library hosts monthly bestselling movie showings from 6pm to 8pm. This month’s movie is a special documentary on Ellis Island presented by PBS. "Visit the abandoned immigrant hospital on Ellis Island. During the great wave of immigration, 22 medical buildings sprawled across two islands adjacent to Ellis Island, the largest port of entry to the United States. Massive and modern, the hospital was America's first line of defense against contagious, often virulent, disease. In the era before antibiotics, tens of thousands of immigrant patients were separated from family, detained in the hospital and healed from illness before becoming citizens." Contact the library for this month’s title or come in and check out the flyer! This program is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.

This program is part of our One Book One Community 2017 pick The Fall of Marigolds by Susan Meissner. Meet the author via Skype on Thursday March 16 at 7pm. Please register for the author Skype session under that event. For more information, please contact Amy Rosa, Reference Librarian, at (508) 261-7380 or arosa@sailsinc.org.
