    Contact: Amy Rosa   508-261-7380   arosa@sailsinc.org

Join author Jim Lynch as he talks about his latest historical novel The Longshoremen. The Longshoremen describes the lives of three generations of McGowan family as they make a living while working on the Boston waterfront. The common thread that connects them all is the challenges presented by the "shape-up" system, a hiring procedure that was archaic and rife with favoritism and was the sole determining factor whether workers received salary that day.

Jim Lynch was born and raised in Charlestown, Massachusetts, worked on the Boston waterfront in the 50s and 60s, then began teaching special needs education until he retired in 1996. He is also the father of seven children.

    Contact: Amy Rosa   508-261-7380   arosa@sailsinc.org

Join Nantucket author Steve Sheppard as he talks about his latest novel Tourist Town: A Nantucket Idyll. "She awakes on Nantucket Island, not knowing where she is or who she is--and she doesn't want to find out. She calls herself "Verona," a name borrowed from the stern of the first boat she sees--a name she hopes will help scuttle her past. She resolves never to leave Nantucket. By staying, the likelihood of uncovering, or being confronted by her past, is negligible--or so she believes. One fog-shrouded night, however, Verona encounters an old woman sitting alone beneath the lighthouse at Sankaty Head--the daughter of a former lighthouse keeper. A diary discovered in the attic of a Victorian-era home reveals a decades-old tragedy that will entangle Verona, the old woman, and a pair of tour bus drivers, who may be able to add a new chapter of Nantucket history to their tours."

Steve Sheppard was the editor of Nantucket Magazine, reporter for the Patriot Ledger and has written for the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Providence Journal, Cape Cod Life, and Sanctuary magazine among other publications. He lives on Nantucket.
