Contact: Jess Bacon, Teen Librarian   508-624-6903   jbacon@cwmars.org

Calling all lovers of teen literature! If you like to talk about books, then join us the last Tuesday of each month (except July and December) for fun discussion and a snack. This program is for teens ages 13+ and adults. We'll read from different genres chosen by group members. If you have questions, contact Jess Bacon, Teen Librarian.  If you would like to join, simply stop by the circulation desk and ask for a B.L.T. book.  Read it and come to the meeting!

This month's book is Splintered by A.G. Howard
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Praise for Splintered:
STARRED REVIEW
"Fans of dark fantasy, as well as of Carroll’s Alice in all her revisionings (especially Tim Burton’s), will find a lot to love in this compelling and imaginative novel."Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
"Alyssa is one of the most unique protagonists I've come across in a while. Splintered is dark, twisted, entirely riveting, and a truly romantic tale."USA Today
"Brilliant, because it is ambitious, inventive, and often surprising — a contemporary reworking of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,’’ with a deep bow toward Tim Burton’s 2010 film version."The Boston Globe
"It’s a deft, complex metamorphosis of this children’s fantasy made more enticing by competing romantic interests, a psychedelic setting, and more mad violence than its original."Booklist
"While readers will delight in such recognizable scenes as Alyssa drinking from a bottle to shrink, the richly detailed scenes that stray from the original will entice the imagination. These adventures are indeed wonderful."BookPage

In 15th-century Transylvania, Vlad III (Luke Evans), prince of Wallachia, is known as a just ruler. With his beloved wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon), Vlad has brokered a prolonged period of peace and ensured that his people are protected, especially from the Ottoman Empire. However, when Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper) demands 1,000 of the country's boys, including Vlad's son, for his army, Vlad makes a deal with a monster that will enable him to defeat the Turks -- but cost him his humanity.

Do you spend too much time looking for your important paperwork? Do you have piles of stuff waiting to be sorted? Adults are invited to participate in a monthly Meetup group in Marlborough. We expect the format for this and future Meetups to begin with a short presentation and then we'll spend time socializing. Our hope is that people will meet compatible folks to share tips and techniques, and find an "accountability partner" to help make progress in changing our procrastinating and cluttering behaviors.
You are invited to join us on Tuesday February 17  at 7 pm. There is no charge for participation. Find us on Meetup.com: Metrowest Procrastinators and Clutterers. For location, email ClearPathMA@gmail.com. ClearPath is a program of the Marlborough Community Development Corporation.

This month's book is Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza
Debra Driza's Mila 2.0 is the first book in a gripping Bourne Identity-style trilogy about a girl who disvoers she is actually an andriod. Mila was never supposed to remember her past, or know what lurked beneath her synthetic skin. She was never meant to learn she was "born" in a secret computer science lab and programmed with superhuman skills. But when a group of hooded men show up on her doorstep, hoping to strip her of her advanced technology, she has no choice but to run for her life.

Filled with secrets, action, and even romance, Mila 2.0 is perfect for readers who love sci-fi thrillers like the Partials series and I Am Number Four.

In need of a new kidney and having learned that he has a long-lost daughter, dimwit Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) snaps his equally cretinous pal, Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey), out of an apparent fugue state to accompany him on a journey to find her. The witless wonders criss-cross the country using whatever mode of transportation they can find, ultimately arriving at the one place on Earth where they least belong: a summit of the world's most brilliant minds.

This movie is rated PG-13 and runs 1h 50m. It is open to teens in grades 6-12.

Want to plant a garden this year?  Need help knowing where to start with seeds?  Come, get inspired and learn the basics of growing plants from seed!

Gretel Anspach will discuss seed choices, what to start and when to start it as well as growing methods including windowsill versus grow light gardening. Whether you are interested in annuals, perennials, edibles, or even shrubs and trees, this lecture will give you the information you need to go from starting a seed to planting in the ground.

Gretel Anspach is a Trustee of Mass Hort, a Lifetime Master Gardener, past-president of the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association and a systems engineer for Raytheon. Gretel is also a member of the Garden to Table committee at Mass Hort and helped to establish and maintain a food production garden at Raytheon that has provided fresh produce to the Marlboro Food Pantry for five years.
