With no passports, fleeing from creditors with his pregnant wife, Richard Wagner took passage on a ship sailing from Riga to London. High seas and stormy weather forced the ship into Norwegian fjords. Wagner claims that this was the inspiration for his opera about love and redemption, Der Fliegende Holländer. This early opera is the beginning of the Wagnerian storm that would sweep through the operatic world.

Tim Urban, professor of music at Rider University, will discuss details of this romantic opera and the precedents it laid forth for subsequent operas.
