The social and political upheaval in Europe in the late 18th century that spawned the French Revolution also sowed the seeds for a new opera genre posthumously called "Rescue Operas," in which the main protagonist (usually a tenor) is rescued from extreme danger or certain death by the heroic self-sacrificing actions of another, often the protagonist's wife or lover. The outcome was almost always happy and represented the belief in the inevitable triumph of human will over injustice and tyranny.

It is not surprising that Beethoven, composer of the Eroica Symphony and the monumental 9th Symphony, was drawn to this genre. Just as his symphonies and string quartets set the standard by which all subsequent composers would be judged, so too did Beethoven's single opera, Fidelio, tower over all other Rescue Operas. Were it not for Beethoven's Fidelio, the entire genre of Rescue Opera would be little more than a footnote.

Timothy Urban will examine Beethoven’s music as it correlates to the drama and intensifies the emotional states of the several main characters.

Timothy P. Urban, PhD, is adjunct associate professor in the Department of Music Composition, History and Theory at Westminster Choir College in Princeton.

At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortune nor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Registration is suggested.

The Mayor of Casterbridge, one of Thomas Hardy’s most powerful novels, opens with a scene of shocking heartlessness. In a fit of drunken rage, Michael Henchard, an out-of-work laborer, sells his wife and baby daughter to a passing sailor. When the horror of what he has done dawns on him the next day, he determines to set his life on a different path and, through years of hard work and ambition, rises to become the rich and respectable mayor of his town. Secret guilt continues to haunt this proud and brooding man, however, and when his wife and grown daughter return to Casterbridge, Henchard is set on the path to a dramatic confrontation with his own deeply flawed nature. Hardy’s keen insight into the course of wayward lives and his instinctive feel for the beauty of the rural landscape come together in this unforgettable portrait of a tragic hero.
