    Contact: Lawrence Programs   609-989-6920   lawprogs@mcl.org
Modern Chinese poetry refers to the modern vernacular style of poetry, as opposed to the traditional poetry written in Classical Chinese language after 1919's May Fourth Movement. The early twentieth century was also a period in which the western linguistic and cultural traditions of poetry greatly influenced Chinese poets. To celebrate the Chinese New Year in February, we will discuss contemporary Chinese poems written by masters from Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, on their aesthetic value, social and cultural implications. Registration suggested.

When he attempts to regain his lost memories, the whole society of the Golden Oecumene opposes him. Like his mythical namesake, Phaethon has flown too high and been cast down. Desperate to find a connection to their daughter and avoid sending her to an asylum, the Heurtins send fourteen-year-old Marie to the Larnay Institute in central France, where an order of Catholic nuns manage a school for deaf girls. There, the idealistic Sister Marguerite sees in Marie a unique potential, and despite her Mother Superior's skepticism, vows to bring the wild young thing out of the darkness into which she was born. Based on true events, Marie's Story recounts the courageous journey of a young nun and the lives she would change forever, confronting failures and discouragement with joyous faith and love.     The Noor Inayat Khan Story brings to life the story of a woman's extraordinary courage, tested in the crucible of Nazi-occupied Paris. With an American mother and Indian Muslim father, Noor Inayat Khan was an extremely unusual British agent, and her life spent growing up in a Sufi center of learning in Paris seemed an unlikely preparation for the dangerous work to come. Yet it was in this place of universal peace and contemplation that her remarkable courage was forged. In early 1943, Khan was recruited as a covert operative into Winston Churchill's Special Operations Executive (SOE). 1 hour. Registration suggested.

Sappho was born sometime during the seventh century B.C. in Lesbos, Greece. An exalted artist who created lyrical poems meant to be set to song, her work expressed love for men and women while also paying homage to the deities of the times. Sappho's poems were posthumously compiled into nine papyrus volumes at the Library of Alexandria, though the bulk of her output was eventually lost. Still, fragments of Sappho's songs have been found through the years, with scholarly dialogue continuing to unfold over the iconic figure's history and motivations. Registration suggested.

    Contact: Lawrence Programs   609-989-6920   lawprogs@mcl.org
In "Flashforward", Nobel-hungry physicists conducting an unimaginably high-energy experiment accidentally induce a global consciousness shift. In an instant, everyone on Earth is "flashed forward" 21 years, experiencing several minutes of the future. But while everyone is, literally, out of their minds, their bodies drop unconscious; when the world reawakens, car wrecks, botched surgeries, falls, and other mishaps add up to massive death and destruction. Slowly, as recovery efforts continue, people realize that during the "Flashforward" (as it comes to be called) they experienced a vision of the future. Soon, the physicists who caused the "Flashforward" are struggling to help the world decide whether the future is changeable, and whether the experiment is worth repeating. Next month’s SciFi Book Club title is "The Mammoth Book of Mind Blowing", edited by Mike Ashley. Refreshments served. Registration suggested.

    Contact: Lawrence Programs   609-989-6920   lawprogs@mcl.org
Long before Amelia Earhart’s famous exploits, female flyers had already proved that aviatrices were every bit as brave and daring as their male counterparts. Flying in flimsy wood and canvas aeroplanes, Aida de Acosta, Raymonde de Laroche, Hélène Dutrieu , Marie Marvingt, Harriet Quimby, Katherine Stinson, Ruth Law, Bessie Coleman and Elinor Smith awed and thrilled people on the ground — executing audacious acrobatic aerial maneuvers, soloing across the English channel, setting records, barnstorming and buzzing beneath New York’s bridges. Undaunted by male skepticism, they were determined to show that anything that men could do, they could do too. Presented by historical re-enactor Carol Simon-Levin. Registration suggested.

Try out your acting chops (or indulge your secret passion) playing one of the great characters from dramatic literature or contemporary comedy—without the threat of performing in front of a live audience! We will “cast” and read a play aloud, around a table, as actors and production teams typically do at the first rehearsal of a play. Registration suggested.

Kaloyan Penev, Associate Research Scholar at the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University, will briefly introduce how we discover planetary systems and how and what we can learn about them. After that he will focus on some of the more unusual and exciting discoveries, including tiny planetary systems, much smaller than even the orbit of our closest planet Mercury; rapidly evaporating planets; planets orbiting more than one star and planets with no stars at all as well as cases where scientists have not been able to make sense of yet. In each case he will present our best understanding and the evidence for it, as well as what it teaches us about how planets form and what happens to them subsequently. Registration suggested.
