Author and baseball historian John G. Zinn will discuss New Jersey Base Ball during the Civil War Era: 1855-1870.  Legend has it that base ball (two words in the 19th century) was invented in 1839 in Cooperstown, NY by Abner Doubleday. In fact, the direct ancestor of today’s game started in New York City and New Jersey played an important role in the early days of our “national pastime.”  Zinn will discuss how New Jersey might justly be called base ball’s “incubator,” how the game developed and spread throughout the state and the major differences between the game then and now.
