    Contact: Lawrence Programs   609-989-6920   lawprogs@mcl.org

Legal planning for seniors can be complicated but it doesn’t have to be. It can start with three simple documents: a Will, a Power of Attorney, and a document to handle healthcare decision making. Not having these documents in place can be devastating for your financial affairs, not to mention a drain on your family in a time of crisis. This presentation by Carl Archer, an attorney at Mercer Elder Law, will give you essential information to use when you contact your trusted advisors to get your own plan in place. There will also be an explanation of the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can provide a veteran and his/her spouse anywhere from $1,100 a month to more than $2,000 a month in tax-free assistance. This seminar is designed to prepare attendees for the next chapter of their lives, and to help avoid many common planning traps and pitfalls. Registration is suggested.

Theeb  (United Arab Emirates, Quatar, Jordan and United Kingdom - 2014)

Nominated for the 2016 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1916, while war rages in the Ottoman Empire, Hussein raises his younger brother Theeb ("Wolf") in a traditional Bedouin community that is isolated by the vast, unforgiving desert. The brothers' quiet existence is suddenly interrupted when a British Army officer and his guide ask Hussein to escort them to a water well located along the old pilgrimage route to Mecca. So as not to dishonor his recently deceased father, Hussein agrees to lead them on the long and treacherous journey. The young, mischievous Theeb secretly chases after his brother, but the group soon find themselves trapped amidst threatening terrain riddled with Ottoman mercenaries, Arab revolutionaries, and outcast Bedouin raiders. Naji Abu Nowar's powerful and assured directorial debut, set in the land of Lawrence of Arabia, is a wondrous "Bedouin Western" about a boy who, in order to survive, must become a man and live up to the name his father gave him. 100 min. Arabic with English subtitles.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Then one day Rachel sees “Jess” kissing another man. The day after that, Jess goes missing. Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut. Registration suggested.

We will discuss Look Me in the Eye:  My Life with Asperger’s by John Elder Robison.

"John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits had earned him the label "social deviant." No guidance came from his mother, who conversed with light fixtures, or his father, who spent evenings drunk. No wonder he gravitated to machines, which could be counted on. His savant-like ability to visualize electronic circuits landed him a gig with KISS, where he created their legendary fire-breathing guitars. Later, he drifted into a "real" job, as an engineer for a major toy company. But the higher Robison rose, the more he had to pretend to be "normal" and do what he simply couldn't:  communicate. It was not until he was forty that an insightful therapist told him he had the form of autism called Asperger's syndrome.  That understanding transformed the way Robison saw himself—and the world." [From publisher’s description.]

A modern masterpiece from one of Italy's most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante's inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else. As they grow, as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge, Elena and Lila remain best friends whose respective destinies are reflected and refracted in the other. They are likewise the embodiments of a nation undergoing momentous change. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists, the unforgettable Elena and Lila.

A family struggles to go on after a devastating loss. Giovanni is a psychiatrist with a successful practice. He has a warm relationship with his wife, Paola, with whom they have a daughter, Irene, and a son, Andrea. The family's calm is shattered when Andrea is unexpectedly killed in an accident. Giovanni finds it impossible to continue with his work and blames himself for the death, because he had canceled plans to go jogging with Andrea that morning before he was called away for a patient. His wife and daughter tried to keep their emotions in check, but both sink further into anger and grief. Arianna, who had enjoyed a summer romance with Andrea the year before, comes to town to pay him a surprise visit, unaware of his recent death. Her unexpected visit eventually forces the family to confront their feelings about Andrea. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Windsor Library

Meditation may be described as the path which the individual cuts for himself while trying to get beyond the limitations of the mind. Though meditation is essentially an individual matter, collective meditation has its own advantages. If different aspirants who are in harmony with each other take to the same line of meditation together, their thoughts have a tendency to augment and strengthen each other. In Reality Meditation we let go of control, we let go of our false self and become normal and natural. We open our heart to God’s love as we go deep down into the root of our maladies and consciously see the negative aspects of our ego.
