Cranford depicts the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of a small village: their petty snobberies, appetite for gossip, and loyal support for each other in times of need. This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very heart of which are the daughters of the former rector: Miss Deborah Jenkyns, and her sister, Miss Matty. Domestic peace is constantly threatened in the form of financial disaster, imagined burglaries, tragic accidents, the reappearance of long-lost relatives, and Lady Glenmire, who shocks everyone by marrying the doctor. When men do appear, such as “modern” Captain Brown, or Matty’s suitor from the past, they bring disruption and excitement to the everyday life of Cranford.

We ask that you register; however, walk-ins are welcome. Registration begins on May 22; call 609-799-0462 with questions or to register.

To survive and thrive in this turbulent world we need peace and power, not just the peace that is the absence of a few worries, but real inner peace and power that comes from deep inner contentment and makes one steadfast in the face of challenge.

Let’s explore together some obstacles that we face in our everyday life, which cause us to lose our peace, and some remedies to overcome them.

Over 750,000 men died in the American Civil War, but the tragedy was magnified by disrespectful burial practices in which large numbers of bodies were dumped, unidentified, into trenches. Enemy soldiers were frequently not buried at all and left to rot where they fell.

This program covers this issue and shows how after the war, federal and state governments sought to rectify the matter.

Born into country-house privilege in the early years of the 20th century, they became prominent as “bright young things” in the high society of interwar London. Then, as the shadows crept over 1930s Europe, the stark?and very public?differences in their outlooks came to symbolize the political polarities of a dangerous decade. The intertwined stories of their stylish and scandalous lives are recounted in masterly fashion in this biography by Laura Thompson. Registration is suggested.

What is a Fidget Quilt?

Sometimes people who have Alzheimer’s Disease or other cognitive issues may have restless hands.  Fidget Quilts are made to address this problem. Small square quilts, about 24” x 24”, are made of 6” squares that incorporate fabrics with texture, fabrics with a large motif, squares embellished with ribbons, lace, tucks, etc., and squares with something to manipulate (zippers, pockets, buttons).

Jim Merritt, resident on North Main Street in Pennington since 1975, recently produced a history of his Pennington house, built ca. 1878. His talk will focus on his research, which included title searches in the Mercer County Clerk’s Office, finding and interviewing past residents of the house or their descendants, and searching online sources, particularly Ancestry.com. From start to finish the project took about three months and resulted in a 32-page booklet of text, maps, and photos. Merritt is a retired editor and writer who worked at Princeton University for 24 years, the last 10 as editor of its alumni magazine.

London, January 1946, emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. She finds it in a letter from a man she's never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb. As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island.

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of Mr. Hosokawa, a powerful Japanese businessman. Roxanne Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening--until a band of gun-wielding terrorists breaks in through the air-conditioning vents and takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds and people from different countries and continents become compatriots. Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion and cannot be stopped.

We ask that you register; however, walk-ins are welcome. Registration begins on June 22; call 609-799-0462 with questions or to register.
