The Last Chronicle of Barset is the grand finale to the Barsetshire series of novels, Trollope’s magnificent portrayal of the professional and landed classes of Victorian England. The plot focuses on Mr. Crawley, the fanatically proud curate of Hogglestock, already known to readers of Framley Parsonage. Accused of theft and persecuted by the domineering Mr. Proudie and her self-righteous followers, he is perhaps Trollope’s only character conceived on a heroic scale, and his sufferings reach a tragic intensity. Other familiar characters on the Barsetshire landscape include Mr. Harding, whose old age is movingly described; Grace Crawley, who becomes romantically involved with Major Grantly; and Johnny Eames, who continues his pursuit of Lily Dale but becomes entangled in a dangerous flirtation with the intriguing Madalina Demolines. Lady Lufton, Mr. Robarts, the Greshams, and the Thornes also reappear to play their final part in the Barsetshire drama.

Additionally, learn about the residential real estate local processes of Mercer, Somerset, and Middlesex counties, which are different from those in other New Jersey counties.

Don Betterton, former Princeton University admission committee member and currently an independent college counselor, will discuss:

·         The rigor of courses vs. good grades in high school

·         How colleges evaluate extracurricular activities

·         The importance of SAT and ACT test, as well as preparation and scheduling

·         How admission committees evaluate applicants

·         Things to keep in mind when writing the college essay.

As former Director of Financial Aid at Princeton University, Don is quite knowledgeable about how to pay for college, a timely topic, given that the total cost of a 4-year education can exceed $240,000 and the amount owed by American students on college loans exceeds $1 trillion.

As a mother of two children recently admitted to college, Daniela Kaisth has learned much about current trends in college admissions and wants to share her expertise. Daniela’s comments will cover topics such as:

·         Lessons learned from getting two kids into college.

·         What is “fit,” and why is it important?

·         How to handle the parent-child relationship during the college admissions process.

PowerPoint presentation with handouts will be followed by a Q&A session.

The second book of The Neapolitan Novels, following last year’s My Brilliant Friend, featuring the two friends Lila and Elena. The two protagonists are now in their twenties. Marriage appears to have imprisoned Lila. Meanwhile, Elena continues her journey of self-discovery. The two young women share a complex and evolving bond that brings them close at times, and drives them apart at others. Each vacillates between hurtful disregard and profound love for the other. With this complicated and meticulously portrayed friendship at the center of their emotional lives, the two girls mature into women, paying the cruel price that this passage exacts.

Down the alphabet, from Dr. Virginia Apgar, inventor of the Apgar score, to legendary Revolutionary War heroine Temperance Wick, New Jersey women have been integral to American history. While the lives and contributions of these pioneers don’t fit a specific category, what they do have in common is both their energy and the sense of purpose they brought to their lives.

In this lecture, New Jersey photojournalist Jim DelGiudice will examine the stories of these passionate individuals as well as the social context of the times they lived in.
