The role of women, minorities, and minors is presented, and the lecture concludes with the war’s tragic aftermath. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Windsor Library.

In France there exists a close relationship between poetry and songs. The interplay of a poem’s musicality, words, and rhythm has acted as a catalyst for many composers’ creative achievements. In this presentation we are going to consider the relationship between poetry and music in French culture, and we will discuss some poems by famous poets that have been set to music and interpreted by lyric singers. We will also consider English language songs that have their origins in the French tradition of poetry and songwriting. When you have a popular song on the radio, you might not know that it originated with a French poet and singer. Registration suggested.

Why did they turn away from the Astrobe dream and seek lives of bone-crushing work, squalor and disease? Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village—they’ve all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men—her own "Siete Magníficos"—to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over.

Besides improving physical function and slowing the physical aging process, exercise is also an excellent way to manage stress and feel better throughout each day. This session consists of methods that improve joint mobility, strength, and flexibility, and will incorporate therapeutic strategies to correct muscular imbalances. The combination of isometric and dynamic movements are designed to condition the muscles and tendons, in addition to building a foundation of strength and endurance required for more demanding physical exercise.

Using no weights or equipment, the principles and progressions instructed in this class can be incorporated into an existing exercise routine or stand alone as a workout that can be performed anywhere. Please bring a yoga mat, towel and water bottle.

Benjamin Britten’s tragic opera, Peter Grimes, in which the “individual is pitted against the masses, is a hallmark of 20th century English opera. Set in the mid-19th century, Britten combines elements of traditional 19th century musical form and aesthetics with the new musical language of the mid-20th century in a score of dramatic intensity and compelling realism. Professor Timothy Urban will reveal what makes this work a masterpiece of contemporary opera. Sponsored by the Friends of the West Windsor Library.

Rated R; Bosnian; 97 minutes

Set during the height of the Bosnian War in 1993, a group of Bosnian soldiers are advancing on Serb territory under the cover of a foggy night. At daybreak, the fog lifts, and the Serbs open fire. Soon there is only one Bosnian survivor because he was able to dive into a trench in no man's land. He then watches as two Serbian soldiers use the body of a fallen Bosnian to bait a land mine. He fires on them, killing one, and taking the second hostage. Now both are alone and equally armed, so they are forced to share a wary trust as they try to attract help from either side.

In 1940, Benjamin Britten was living in California when a friend sent him an essay by E.M. Forster on George Crabbe’s 18th poem “The Borough” about life in a Suffolk fishing village near where Britten himself had lived. Coincidentally, another friend gave him a copy of Crabbe’s work whereupon Britten made two resolutions: to write an opera about Crabbe’s tragic character Peter Grimes and to return to his native England and rejoin his countrymen to face the impending war. This talk presented by Marianne Grey, Princeton University Art Museum Docent, will include literary and artistic examples of how WWII changed the arts of the mid-20th century. Registration suggested.

Beginning in Paris on the eve of the Nazi occupation in 1940, Suite Française tells the remarkable story of men and women thrown together in circumstances beyond their control. As Parisians flee the city, human folly surfaces in every imaginable way: a wealthy mother searches for sweets in a town without food; a couple is terrified at the thought of losing their jobs, even as their world begins to fall apart. Moving on to a provincial village now occupied by German soldiers, the locals must learn to coexist with the enemy--in their town, their homes, even in their hearts. When Irène Némirovsky began working on Suite Française, she was already a highly successful writer living in Paris. But she was also a Jew, and in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. For sixty-four years, this novel remained hidden and unknown.

We will “cast” and read a play aloud, around a table, as actors and production teams typically do at the first rehearsal of a play. Registration suggested.

Sutinder Dhanjal, a recently retired aerospace engineer, has discovered that seven major factors must be present—in a certain sequence—for peace and prosperity to prevail in a community, a country, and indeed the world. Sutinder demonstrates how these factors have played a role in establishing peace in certain countries. Sutinder has researched this topic for years and continues the research as he develops the presentation. He has given this talk as a keynote speaker at the NJ Department of Transportation, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Princeton University, and various high schools. Doctor Thorne, the third novel in Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, sees the author steer away from the church politics of the first two novels and move toward the scandals and prejudice of the upper tiers of Victorian-era aristocracy. It tells the tale of Frank Gresham and Mary Thorne, a couple intent on marriage despite their conflicting social backgrounds. Frank is engaged in a fierce battle with his family as his mother vehemently opposes the marriage and pushes him to marry a wealthy heiress; however, Frank shuns his mother's attempts, as he is determined to accept Mary on her own terms. Trollope's classic, trademark prose shines in Doctor Thorne: always solicitous, gentle, and kind to his readers, the author peppers his narrative with wonderfully witty observations that will leave you smiling.
