A theremin is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact. Theremins were used memorably in movie soundtracks (e.g. Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Mars Attacks!) and are commonly associated with having a very eerie sound (think “ flying saucers ”). Theremins are also used in concert music (especially avant-garde and 20th- and 21st-century new music) and in popular music genres such as rock.
