The story follows Hetty "Handful" Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid. The Invention of Wings follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist, and, importantly, an abolitionist), Kidd allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined.

At the turn of the 19th century, a humble artisan and his wife have a daughter, Marie, who is born deaf and blind and unable to communicate with the world around her. Desperate to find a connection to their daughter and avoid sending her to an asylum, the Heurtins send fourteen-year-old Marie to the Larnay Institute in central France, where an order of Catholic nuns manage a school for deaf girls. There, the idealistic Sister Marguerite sees in Marie a unique potential, and despite her Mother Superior's skepticism, vows to bring the wild young thing out of the darkness into which she was born. Based on true events, Marie's Story recounts the courageous journey of a young nun and the lives she would change forever, confronting failures and discouragement with joyous faith and love. Ramón Sampedro wants to end his life because a diving accident 28 years before that turned him into a quadriplegic. For most of those years he made the most of it: writing, developing a close relationships with his family, who all help to care for him. While grateful to his family and friends for their help, Ramón was always an active person. He has come to see his life as frustrating and pointless and wishes to die with what remains of his dignity. Gené is a friend who works with a "Right to Die" organization who introduces Ramón to Julia, a lawyer he hopes will help him persuade the courts to let him end his own life. With an American mother and Indian Muslim father, Noor Inayat Khan was an extremely unusual British agent, and her life spent growing up in a Sufi center of learning in Paris seemed an unlikely preparation for the dangerous work to come. Yet it was in this place of universal peace and contemplation that her remarkable courage was forged.     Sappho was born sometime during the seventh century B.C. in Lesbos, Greece. An exalted artist who created lyrical poems meant to be set to song, her work expressed love for men and women while also paying homage to the deities of the times. Sappho's poems were posthumously compiled into nine papyrus volumes at the Library of Alexandria, though the bulk of her output was eventually lost. Still, fragments of Sappho's songs have been found through the years, with scholarly dialogue continuing to unfold over the iconic figure's history and motivations. Registration suggested.

In "Flashforward", Nobel-hungry physicists conducting an unimaginably high-energy experiment accidentally induce a global consciousness shift. In an instant, everyone on Earth is "flashed forward" 21 years, experiencing several minutes of the future. But while everyone is, literally, out of their minds, their bodies drop unconscious; when the world reawakens, car wrecks, botched surgeries, falls, and other mishaps add up to massive death and destruction. Slowly, as recovery efforts continue, people realize that during the "Flashforward" (as it comes to be called) they experienced a vision of the future. Soon, the physicists who caused the "Flashforward" are struggling to help the world decide whether the future is changeable, and whether the experiment is worth repeating. Next month’s SciFi Book Club title is "The Mammoth Book of Mind Blowing", edited by Mike Ashley. Refreshments served. Registration suggested.

EFT is at the forefront of the emerging energy psychology field. It’s a relatively new approach that combines acupuncture with modern psychology—without the needles! By gentle tapping on acupressure points while tuning into whatever problem you want to work on, the distress subsides and you’re left with a new sense of emotional freedom. It’s that easy. The introductory lecture includes the history and science of this technique, fascinating stories, and a chance to try it out yourself. Carol Bemmels learned EFT 17 years ago, and it completely changed the way she helps people. As a masters-level counselor, she’s worked in many settings: a shelter for battered women, hospitals, schools, and community agencies. She’s lectured and trained people internationally in peace and peer counseling techniques. She currently has a private practice in Hopewell, NJ.

Long before Amelia Earhart’s famous exploits, female flyers had already proved that aviatrices were every bit as brave and daring as their male counterparts. Flying in flimsy wood and canvas aeroplanes, Aida de Acosta, Raymonde de Laroche, Hélène Dutrieu , Marie Marvingt, Harriet Quimby, Katherine Stinson, Ruth Law, Bessie Coleman and Elinor Smith awed and thrilled people on the ground — executing audacious acrobatic aerial maneuvers, soloing across the English channel, setting records, barnstorming and buzzing beneath New York’s bridges. Undaunted by male skepticism, they were determined to show that anything that men could do, they could do too. Presented by historical re-enactor Carol Simon-Levin. Registration suggested.

Barbara Figge Fox and members of the New Jersey State Button Society will show buttons that might have appealed to Theresa Doelger Kuser, Victorian matriarch of the Kuser Farm Mansion. The span of her lifetime -- 1862 to 1926 -- was the heyday of beautiful buttons made for women to wear. You will see picture buttons made of metal, black glass mourning buttons, and shell buttons inlaid with gold and silver.
