How do taxes fit into your retirement planning? Learn how to reduce the effect taxes can have on your retirement income. Retirement isn’t what it used to be—especially with people living longer and spending more of their lives as retirees. With fewer companies offering pensions, and Social Security facing an uncertain future, the way we fund our retirement is changing, too. And tax rates? While they may be at historic lows now, there’s no telling where they’ll be in the future and how they’ll impact your retirement income. So how can you keep more of the savings you’ve worked a lifetime to enjoy? In this seminar, you’ll learn:

·         Why you should tax diversify your retirement portfolio

·         Where your retirement income may come from

·         What impact taxes can have on your retirement lifestyle

·         How nontraditional options can supplement your retirement income using permanent life insurance, while providing valuable life insurance protection during your working years

Registration is suggested, though walk-ins are welcome. Registration begins on March 22; call 609-799-0462 with questions or to make an appointment.

Meet up with others who are also interested in local travel and entertainment. Use this planning meeting to brainstorm about day trips as well as weekend getaways. Perhaps you’ll start with a local play at Kelsey or McCarter Theater. As the better weather rolls in, take in a Broadway play and dine at the Playwright Celtic Pub. Attendees plan and execute the trips. The sky’s the limit! Bring along a hot beverage and enjoy a Liverpool tart or fig Newton at the planning meeting.

Our relationships are meant to be a source of joy and comfort, but too often they bring us pain and sorrow. Whether at work or in our personal lives, we encounter adverse relationships. We often have a difficult time dealing with the challenges these relationships bring, which then creates upheaval and tension in the mind.

In this insight session, let’s understand how some of our beliefs about relationships and patterns of connecting with others, entangle and limit us. Through short activities and discussions we will explore practical solutions to help us maintain a peaceful mind and create healthy relationships. It’s time to heal our relationships!

Presented by staff member Leena Iyengar, a 9 year practitioner of Rajyoga meditation, delivers youth and adult programs on values and facilitates workshops on topics such as Harmony in Relationships, Stress Free Living, & more. She conducts classes at different Brahmakumaris locations including Piscataway New Jersey and at Peace Village Retreat Center in New York.

The Hickory Corner Branch is pleased to announce a dynamic art show called Allegories by local artists Joy Sacalis and Susan Winter. The display will run from May 1 through June 27, 2017 during regular library hours.

A reception will be held from 7 pm to 9 pm at the library on May 4, 2017 to celebrate the new display. All are welcome to attend and browse the display.

Joy and Susan are storytellers through their art, with very different styles. Susan tells stories through touching reality while Joy tells them through abstraction. Their works produce an interesting contrast. Ms. Sacalis states, “I like to paint intuitively, in an exploration of imaginary worlds and ideas” while Ms. Winter “likes to paint reality with abstract qualities, using the freedom of abstraction to express depth.”

Based on a true story about revenge, fear, and redemption. In 19th century Saint-Pierre, a convict sentenced to death strives to better himself in the eyes of the police chief's beautiful wife and the townspeople. Because Saint-Pierre does not have a guillotine or executioner, one of each has to be sent for from France.

Regarded as one of the greatest Russian poets of the twentieth centuary, who also became a legend as a poet and symbol of artistic integrity, Akhmatova modeled its principles of writing with precision, clarity, simplicity, and disciplined form. Her strong and clear leading female voice struck a new chord in Russian poetry. Her work was condemned and censored by Stalinist authorities and she is notable for choosing not to emigrate, and remaining in Russia, acting as witness to the events around her. Her perennial themes include meditations on time and memory, and the difficulties of living and writing in the shadow of totalitarianism. Registration suggested.

High blood pressure is a common and dangerous condition that increases your risk for heart disease and stroke, two of the leading causes of death in the United States. As part of National Stroke Awareness Month, Capital Health will offer free blood pressure screenings in the community. Get screened by a registered nurse and receive information on things you can do to help lower your risk for stroke.

About 1 of 3 adults in the United States—or about 75 million people—have high blood pressure. Only about half of these people have it under control, which is why it is important to check your blood pressure on a regular basis.  A registered nurse from Capital Health will conduct screenings.

With the proliferation of cell phones, we wonder at the marvels of modern technology. Sure, the handsets are high-tech, but wireless communications started way back in the 1800s. Pioneers we learned about from our high school physics classes—such as Ampere, Henry, Faraday, Hertz, and Tesla—all worked with radio waves. Yet one name stands out above all the rest: Marconi.

Whereas many of the early pioneers were primarily scientists, Marconi was also a businessman. He developed the equipment he needed and took his efforts out of the laboratory—and proved the commercial value of wireless technology in New Jersey!

Marconi’s journey through the early years of wireless communications involved fascinating topics, including Morse Code, The America’s Cup, and Italian earthquake, a British mail ship, an even the search for gold treasure that continues today.

Michael Hyduk will describe the series of events that set the stage for the communications technology we enjoy today.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris within walking distance of the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of the locks (there are thousands of locks in the museum). When she is six, she goes blind, and her father builds her a model of their neighborhood—every house, every manhole—so she can memorize it with her fingers and navigate the real streets with her feet and cane. When the Germans occupy Paris, father and daughter flee to Saint-Malo on the Brittany coast, where Marie-Laure’s agoraphobic great uncle lives in a tall, narrow house by the sea wall.

In another world in Germany, orphans Werner and Jutta grow up enchanted by a crude radio Werner finds. He becomes a master at building and fixing radios, a talent that wins him a place at an elite and brutal military academy and, ultimately, makes him a highly specialized tracker of the Resistance. Werner travels through the heart of Hitler Youth to the far-flung outskirts of Russia, and finally into Saint-Malo, where his path converges with Marie-Laure.
