The second book of The Neapolitan Novels, following last year’s My Brilliant Friend, featuring the two friends Lila and Elena. The two protagonists are now in their twenties. Marriage appears to have imprisoned Lila. Meanwhile, Elena continues her journey of self-discovery. The two young women share a complex and evolving bond that brings them close at times, and drives them apart at others. Each vacillates between hurtful disregard and profound love for the other. With this complicated and meticulously portrayed friendship at the center of their emotional lives, the two girls mature into women, paying the cruel price that this passage exacts.

John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother, Jean (Toni Collette), in a social housing suburb and ekes out a meager living as a nocturnal taxi driver. John returns home one morning to find his mother unconscious from an alcohol overdose; however this was not the first time. Jean violently rejects John's attempts to help as well as his intentions to unite the family. When Jean is offered an opportunity to recover, and with no savings or insurance, John is forced to offer his services to a petty criminal to help pay for his mother's costly rehab program. John is subsequently faced with a life-changing task that may change him and his family's lives forever.93 min. Not rated. Registration is suggested.

Robert Bly (1926-), was born in Minnesota to a family of Norwegian ancestry. As a poet, editor, and translator, Bly has had a profound impact on the shape of American poetry. Bly is a genius of the elevated ‘high’ style, in the European tradition of Rilke and Yeats, the lush magical realism of the Spanish poets like Lorca and Neruda. Yet Bly’s work is truly American, taking its atmosphere of wide empty space from the Midwest, and its unabashed straightforward emotionalism and spiritualism. This discussion will focus on his major poems and translation work.

The screening of this award-winning documentary on the history of the Joseph Keasbey Brick School and Junior College, a Black school that operated in North Carolina from 1985-1933, will be followed by a discussion with its producer Dr. Willa Cofield, currently 88-years old. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Cofield worked as a high school teacher until 1964 when she was fired as a result of her involvement in the struggle for civil rights. In a benchmark case, she sued both the city and the Board of Education in federal court, and her teaching job was restored, prompting school boards throughout the South to abort efforts to fire Black teachers. After earning two graduate degrees at Rutgers University, she moved to New Jersey in 1980 and worked in the New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of Equal Educational Opportunity. In 1983, she co-founded the Black Women’s History Conference – an organization that sponsored annual conferences for almost 20 years. Registration is suggested.

Down the alphabet, from Dr. Virginia Apgar, inventor of the Apgar score, to legendary Revolutionary War heroine Temperance Wick, New Jersey women have been integral to American history. While the lives and contributions of these pioneers don’t fit a specific category, what they do have in common is both their energy and the sense of purpose they brought to their lives.

In this lecture, New Jersey photojournalist Jim DelGiudice will examine the stories of these passionate individuals as well as the social context of the times they lived in.

Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein; tender memories of his first wife, Hadley; and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft. It is a literary feast, brilliantly evoking the exuberant mood of Paris after World War I and the youthful spirit, unbridled creativity, and unquenchable enthusiasm that Hemingway himself epitomized.

The principal characters in this novel are the servants in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Sarah, the orphaned housemaid, spends her days scrubbing the laundry, polishing the floors, and emptying the chamber pots for the Bennet household. But there is just as much romance, heartbreak, and intrigue downstairs at Longbourn as there is upstairs. The arrival of a mysterious new footman threatens to completely, perhaps irrevocably, upend the orderly realm of the servants' hall.

The Family & Friends CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) program teaches you how to perform CPR on adults or children (over 1 year of age) and how to help an adult or child who is choking. This is a "lay rescuer" class, that is, a participation course designed for members of the general community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. The class includes information on cardiac disease and stroke and teaches basic CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.

The community is the first link in the chain of survival. They are the first to witness an incident and contact emergency medical services. This course teaches bystanders what to do in the first few critical moments until someone arrives; it is not a certification course.

This course is a presentation from Princeton HealthCare System.
