From GoodReads: "Maisie Dobbs isn’t just any young housemaid. Through her own natural intelligence—and the patronage of her benevolent employers—she works her way into college at Cambridge. When World War I breaks out, Maisie goes to the front as a nurse. It is there that she learns that coincidences are meaningful and the truth elusive. After the War, Maisie sets up on her own as a private investigator. But her very first assignment, seemingly an ordinary infidelity case, soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind."

Last Bus to Wisdom by Ivan Doig.  Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig’s beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an eleven-year-old’s imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for “female trouble” in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin. There Donal is in for a rude surprise: Aunt Kate–bossy, opinionated, argumentative, and tyrannical—is nothing like her sister. She henpecks her good-natured husband, Herman the German, and Donal can’t seem to get on her good side either. After one contretemps too many, Kate  packs him back to the authorities in Montana on the next Greyhound. But as it turns out, Donal isn’t traveling solo: Herman the German has decided to fly the coop with him. In the immortal American tradition, the pair light out for the territory together, meeting a classic Doigian ensemble of characters and having rollicking misadventures along the way. Feel free to bring your lunch.  Dessert and beverages served.

    Contact: John Locke   6032794303   John@meredithlibrary.org

Every month we select a new title that you'll love! We'll have a teaser during the month, and then we'll meet at the end of the month to take a closer look. This month we’ll be reading “Zita the Spacegirl,” by Ben Hatke. When her best friend is abducted by an alien doomsday cult, Zita leapsto the rescue and finds herself a stranger on a strange planet. Humanoid chickens and neurotic robots are shocking enough as new experiences go, but Zita is even more surprised to find herself taking on the role of intergalactic hero. Before long, aliens in all shapes and sizes don't even phase her. neither do ancient prophecies, doomed planets, or even a friendly con man who takes a mysetrious interest in Zita's quest.

Books are selected for readers age 8-18, and may contain some PG violence or language. Books will be on the YA Balcony as soon as they're available!

Buffalo Soldier by Chris Bohjilian.  With his trademark emotional heft and storytelling skill, bestselling author Chris Bohjalian presents this resonant novel about the formation of an unconventional family–the ties that bind it, and the strains that pull it apart. Two years after their twin daughters died in a flash flood, Terry and Laura Sheldon, a Vermont state trooper and his wife, take in a foster child. His name is Alfred; he is ten years old and African American. And he has passed through so many indifferent families that he can’t believe that his new one will last.

In the ensuing months Terry and Laura will struggle to emerge from their shell of grief only to face an unexpected threat to their marriage; Terry’s involvement with another woman. Meanwhile, Alfred cautiously enters the family circle, and befriends an elderly neighbor who inspires him with the story of the buffalo soldiers, the black cavalrymen of the old West.  Feel free to bring your lunch.  Dessert and beverages served.

On Thursday morning the library is happy to welcome author, Toby Ball.  The mystery book club will be reading The Vaults, but the author's discussion may not focus on this.  This event is open to the public.  We look forward to seeing you there and are grateful to Mr. Ball for joining us.  From the author's website:

"Toby Ball was born in Washington, DC, grew up in Syracuse, NY, and attended Trinity College (CT). He has had stints in journalism (Congressional Quarterly), education (one memorable year as a high school social studies teacher), and nonprofits (the Carbon Coalition among others). He now works at the Crimes against Children Research Center and the College of Liberal Arts Dean's Office at the University of New Hampshire. He lives in Durham, NH, with his wife and two children."

Through architecture unique to northern New England, this illustrated talk focuses on several case studies that show how farmers converted their typical separate house and barns into connected farmsteads. Thomas Hubka's research in his award-winning book, Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England, demonstrates that average farmers were, in fact, motivated by competition with farmers in other regions of America, who had better soils and growing seasons and fewer rocks to clear.

Thomas Hubka earned his Bachelor's in Architecture from Carnegie-Mellon University and Master's from the University of Oregon. His publications include Big House, Little House, Back House Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England; Resplendent Synagogue: Architecture and Worship in an 18th Century Polish Community; and the forthcoming Houses without Names: Architecture Nomenclature and the Classification of America's Common Houses. Hubka's research primarily interprets the historic development and relationships between architecture/buildings and culture/people.

Covered wooden bridges have been a vital part of the NH transportation network, dating back to the early 1800s. Given NH's myriad streams, brooks, and rivers, it's unsurprising that 400 covered bridges have been documented. Often viewed as quaint relics of a simpler past, they were technological marvels of their day. It may be native ingenuity and NH's woodworking tradition that account for the fact that a number of nationally-noted covered bridge truss designers were NH natives.

Glenn A. Knoblock, B.A. in History, Bowling Green State University; independent scholar and author of twelve books and over 70 articles; author and historian on projects relating to Northern New England bridges, New Hampshire history and African American military history; serving as the main military contributor to Harvard and Oxford University's landmark African American Biography Project.

Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Raceby by Margot Lee Shetterly.  Discuss the book and then watch the film!!!  Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space.

Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation. Originally relegated to teaching math in the South's segregated public schools, they were called into service during the labor shortages of World War II, when America's aeronautics industry was in dire need of anyone who had the right stuff. Suddenly these overlooked math whizzes had shots at jobs worthy of their skills, and they answered Uncle Sam's call, moving to Hampton, Virginia, and the fascinating, high-energy world of the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory.

Even as Virginia's Jim Crow laws required them to be segregated from their white counterparts, the women of Langley's all-black West Computing group helped America achieve one of the things it desired most: a decisive victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War and complete domination of the heavens.. Feel free to bring your lunch.  Popcorn and soda served.

    Contact: Erin Apostolos   603-279-4303   erin@meredithlibrary.org

Why are we so fascinated with stone walls? Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss, explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Along the way, Kevin occupies himself building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket.

Kevin Gardner is a writer, teacher, tradesman, and a lifelong resident of Hopkinton, NH. He has been a stone wall builder for forty years, and is the author of The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls, as well as poetry, songs, and essays. For 25 years, Kevin was an award-winning performance critic, feature writer, and producer for NH Public Radio. He's also a longtime professional actor, director and teacher of theatre. He is a regular Guest Director at Plymouth State University, and has been a performance evaluator for the NH State Council on the Arts. He has taught at the New Hampton School, the NH Institute of Art, and at St. Paul's School's summer Advanced Studies Program. Sponsored by a grant from the NH Humanities Council and the Friends of the Meredith Library.

In the early 20th century, the New Hampshire Board of Agriculture launched a program to boost the rural economy and promote tourism through the sale of abandoned farms to summer residents. After introducing the country house movement, Cristina Ashjian focuses attention on some of the great country estates in New Hampshire. Which private estates were recognized as exemplary, and who were their owners?

Cristina Ashjian is an art historian and an independent scholar based in Moultonborough, where she is presently the chair of the Moultonborough Heritage Commission. Her current research focuses on late 19th and early 20th century country estates. Ashjian holds an MA in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London and a PhD in Modern Art and Architecture from Northwestern University.

Sponsored by a grant from the NH Humanities Council and the Friends of the Meredith Library.
