This month’s selection is "Knots and Crosses: An Inspector Rebus Novel" by Ian Rankin. "His city is being terrorized by a baffling series of murders...and he's tied to a maniac by an invisible knot of blood. Once John Rebus served in Britain's elite SAS. Now he's an Edinburgh cop who hides from his memories, misses promotions and ignores a series of crank letters. But as the ghoulish killings mount and the tabloid headlines scream, Rebus cannot stop the feverish shrieks from within his own mind. Because he isn't just one cop trying to catch a killer, he's the man who's got all the pieces to the puzzle....-Amazon.  Newcomers to the group are welcomed to attend!

Perennial favorite national paranormal expert and author Jeff Belanger returns to present a multi-media presentation called, “A Supernatural Evening.”  A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow the program. People who’ve attended Belanger’s other programs at the Library in years past will be pleased to hear that he changes the show every year so each is new and different.   (Please note: this program is geared toward adults and teenagers, and is NOT recommended for children.)

For more than 15 years, Belanger has been exploring the unexplained.  He seeks out ghosts, monsters, and legends all over the world and in your backyard.  His talk presents highlights from his own adventures, a look at the investigating process and compelling audio and visual paranormal evidence.

He’s the Emmy-nominated host, writer and producer of the “New England Legends” series and the author of a dozen books on the paranormal including the best sellers, The World's Most Haunted Places, Weird Massachusetts, Our Haunted Lives, and the children’s book, Who's Haunting the White House.

Belanger also is the founder of Legendtripper.com, and Ghostvillage.com, as well as the host of the cable/web talk show, "30 Odd Minutes.”  He's written for The Boston Globe, USA Today and other newspapers, and is the series writer and researcher for "Ghost Adventures" on the Travel Channel.

Belanger’s appearance is sponsored by the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library, and is free and open to the public.

This month’s selection is "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family & Culture in Crisisby J.D. Vance. "From a former marine and Yale Law School graduate, a powerful account of growing up in a poor Rust Belt town that offers a broader, probing look at the struggles of America’s white working class. Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J.D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck." -Amazon. New members always welcome!

Bridgewater resident and retired history teacher Ray Ajemian will speak about, “The Armenian Genocide  in History and American Politics."

On the eve of World War I, there were roughly two million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. By 1922, upwards of 1.5 million of them had been killed and most of the rest scattered to other parts of the world. Despite pressure from historians, governments, social justice groups, and even the Pope, both the Turkish and United States governments refuse to admit that the Armenians were victims of a genocide.

Both of Ajemian’s parents are of Armenian decent and immigrated to the United States; his mother was a survivor of the genocide. Ajemian holds degrees in history specializing in the Middle East. Come learn about this controversial period in history and make sure the world does not forget.

Ray welcomes questions during and after his talk, which is free and open to the public.

This month’s selection is "The Unquiet Dead" by Ausma Zehanat Khan "Despite their many differences, Detective Rachel Getty trusts her boss, Esa Khattak, implicitly. But she's still uneasy at Khattak's tight-lipped secrecy when he asks her to look into Christopher Drayton's death. Drayton's apparently accidental fall from a cliff doesn't seem to warrant a police investigation, particularly not from Rachel and Khattak's team, which handles minority-sensitive cases. But when she learns that Drayton may have been living under an assumed name, Rachel begins to understand why Khattak is tip-toeing around this case. It soon comes to light that Drayton may have been a war criminal with ties to the Srebrenica massacre of 1995.-Amazon.  Newcomers to the group are welcomed to attend!

This month’s selection is "The Days of Henry Thoreauby Walter Harding. "Henry David Thoreau is generally remembered as the author of Walden and "Civil Disobedience," a recluse of the woods and political protester who once went to jail. To his contemporaries he was a minor disciple of Emerson; he has since joined the ranks of America's most respected and beloved writers. Few, however, really know the complexity of the man they revere — wanderer and scholar, naturalist and humorist, teacher and surveyor, abolitionist and poet, Transcendentalist and anthropologist, inventor and social critic, and, above all, individualist." -Amazon. This month’s selection is "The Glass Cell" by Patricia Highsmith. "Rife with overtones of Dostoyevsky, The Glass Cell, first published forty years ago, combines a quintessential Highsmith mystery with a penetrating critique of the psychological devastation wrought by the prison system. Falsely convicted of fraud, the easygoing but naive Philip Carter is sentenced to six lonely, drug-ravaged years in prison. Upon his release, Carter is a more suspicious and violent man. For those around him, earning back his trust can mean the difference between life and death.-Amazon.  Newcomers to the group are welcomed to attend!

This month’s selection is "The Twentieth Day of January" also listed under the title "Cold Tactics" by Ted Allbeury. "It's 1980 and the Cold War continues to rage. Seemingly out of nowhere, wealthy businessman Logan Powell has become President-elect and is only weeks away from assuming the most powerful position in the world on the twentieth day of January. Across the Atlantic, veteran British intelligence agent James MacKay uncovers shocking evidence that suggests something might be terribly wrong with the election. With the help of a reluctant CIA, MacKay sets out on a dangerous and daring mission to discover if the unthinkable has occurred: is President-elect Powell actually a puppet of the Soviet Union?" -Amazon. Join the bookclub today and talk about this fantastic read. New members are always welcomed!
