Would you like to make a difference in a student's life!

The Recruitment, Training and Support Center (RTSC) for Special Education Surrogate Parents (SESPs), a project of the Federation for Children with Special Needs, will host a free orientation  training for Massachusetts residents interested in helping local children succeed in school.

In Massachusetts, children in the custody of the DCF depend on SESPs to protect their legal right to a free and appropriate education. SESPs serve as advocates and decision-makers for individual students. Once appointed, these volunteers have the legal authority of a parent or legal guardian to attend special education team meetings, approve or reject IEPs, and, if necessary, file a complaint or appeal. On average an SESP spends about 20-30 hours a year volunteering their time.

For the children in our program, an appropriate education can be a lifeline in a challenging world. SESPs can help them develop the tools they need to grow into successful adults. Of course, the priceless feeling of helping a child in need is the greatest reward.

Registration is required. Contact Emily at egaudette@fcsn.org or (617) 399-8342 to sign up for orientation or to request more information about the program. You can also register online at  http://fcsn.org/rtsc/events/  Visit our website for other available training dates.
