To celebrate Women’s History Month, join us for our first ever “Open Archives Night” on Monday, March 25th from 5:30-7:00PM. View, touch, and interpret objects and records from our Archives & Special Collections and learn about the history of women in Fairhaven.
At Open Archives Night, we invite you to interact with archives directly, becoming a historian yourself by making observations, discussing objects and records, asking questions, and thinking creatively about Fairhaven history. This is not an exhibit, but an opportunity to have hands-on experience with some of our lesser-known collections.
In March, come and learn about the first female member of the Fire Department in Fairhaven, whose job was to hitch up the horse to the hose wagon at the Oxford Fire House. Read about Fairhaven’s suffragettes, who fought for their right to vote before the passage of the 19th amendment – and the resistance they encountered, even from other women in town. View nineteenth-century diaries, period clothing, and photographs, and more and explore changing ideas attitudes among and about women throughout Fairhaven’s history.
This event is for history lovers ages 14 & up. Registration is encouraged but not required. To register, please click here.
