objects_sewing.png Lower Level Art Exhibit: African Style Wall Hangings by Artist Beth Neville Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

From January 17th through March 31st there will be an exhibit of African-style wall hangings shown inside and outside the Keys Community Room, which is located on our Lower Level.   This display will show cloth banners created by Milton artist Beth Neville in the style of African art, and they are beautiful, bright-colored pieces.  The title of the exhibit is the “Great Wall.”  America’s rich cultural heritage has many sources around the globe.  Beth celebrates one of them with this exhibit as she will display eight hand-stitched cloth banners.  She was inspired by African sculpture depicted in a book called African Sculpture Speaks (New York: Hill and Wang, c1961) by New York’s Ladislas Segy, which shows wood carvings of animals, humans, and spirit ancestors.  Her inspiration also comes from cloth originally hand-woven by the Asante and Ewe groups of Ghana.  Much of the fabric used to create this art comes from cloth that Beth has collected for decades, or that she has hand-painted.  These strands weave together to make a unique art synthesis.

Ms. Neville has lived her entire life in multi-cultural communities and she expresses that in her art, as she embraces all cultures as part of her rich American family.  The display will be broken up into two separate installations, one in the outside hall area and the other in the Keys Room.  The Milton artist Joyce Caggiano helped to stitch the borders on the banners, and the metal ornaments on them are from Nigeria.  Also during February Milton Access Cable will be airing 4 episodes about the creative process Beth used to make these banners.  Several Milton young people assisted with this project, including two recent immigrants from Nigeria.  Please come enjoy this very cool presentation this month and there will also be a free and open reception held in the Keys Community Room on Tuesday, February 18th from 6-8 PM where you can meet the artist and discuss her creations.

Please come and enjoy some beautiful wall hangings this month on our lower level, which is open limited hours.  For more information about displaying your art here, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jhlady@ocln.org

objects_easel.png Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Painter Sandrea Lovelock-Williams Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of February, talented artist Sandrea Lovelock-Williams will display her lovely paintings which depict people, still life images, and much more.    This exhibit will run from February lst through the 29th.  Sandrea teaches art at the Community Charter School Cambridge and has worked at several other educational institutions, including as a high school teacher for the Cambridge Ridge and Latin School.  She has a degree in Painting and Art Education from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.

In 2019 one of her paintings, which was on display as part of the Fay Chandler Emerging Artist Awards at Boston City Hall, was chosen as the year’s winner as “Best in Show.”  This painting won over the jurors for its overall excellence.  The subject, a young man, stands in a corner and is dressed up, putting his weight on both feet.  His demeanor seems somewhat hesitant with a downward gaze.   The jurors described the painting as “a portrait of a young man on the edge of adulthood.”

Sandrea’s painting is further described as follows from the City of Boston website: “The execution is brilliant.  Williams makes rich color choices, uses masterful brush strokes, and is confident in her work with light and shadow.  She gives us an excellent sense of depth and texture.  William’s work shows both control of her medium as well as great potential for the future.  Well done!”  We hope you will come and view this colorful and enjoyable exhibit at the Library and there will also be a reception for this display held on the evening of Thursday, February 20th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery which is free and open to all.  The artwork of Ms. Lovelock-Williams is really wonderful to see!  Please try to stop by and view it during February.

Tonight there will be an author talk by David Wedge about his book called 12: The Inside Story of Tom Brady's Fight for Redemption (Little, Brown, c2018) which was co-authored by Casey Sherman.  This title tells the incredible story of Tom Brady's historic 2016 season, when his triumphant return transformed what became know as "Deflategate" into a rallying cry for a campaign with one mission: to definitively prove that the Pats' reign atop the NFL was rightfully earned.  In this thrilling behind-the-scenes account, you will learn how the most sensational scandal in NFL history culminated in the greatest comeback in sports history, featuring dozens of exclusive interviews with Patriots players - including Tom Brady himself.  In January 2015, rumors circulated that the New England Patriots - a team long suspected of abiding by the "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" philosophy - had used under-inflated footballs in their playoff victory against the Indianapolis Colts.  Please join David for an enjoyable evening and learn all the details of this unique true sports story.   This program is free and open to the public, and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of March, we are hosting two artists in a joint exhibit in our Wotiz Gallery.  They are Sculptor Peter Berman and Artist Tom Maholchic, who are both originally from Milton.  Peter Berman specializes in wire sculpture and he began creating art at the age of 8.  Now 31, his ever-expanding catalogue of works are principally influenced by nature and the human form.  The sculptures are composed of colored aluminum wire, and sometimes incorporate complimentary materials like clay and paint.  Artist Tom Maholchic enjoys using acrylic for his paintings, and over the yaers he has pursued different styles, always looking for new creative challenges.  His art ranges from impressionist landscapes to portraits to abstract fluid art.  Often blending different styles, he looks for inspiration from other artists, nature, and his surroundings.  Peter and Tom met as kids at Tucker Elementary School and began small collaborative projects in high school.  Most recently featured together in June 2019 at the Savin Gallery in Dorchester, their latest joint works include media from each of their specialities fixed adjacent to each other.  There will be a free and open reception held for this exhibit on Wednesday, March 4th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery on the first floor.  Please come and view this cool and colorful display and meet the artists.

This 90-minute presentation with time for questions at the end will be given by Ehris Urban and Velya Jancz-Urban of the "Grounded Goodwife" which is a Connecticut-based company that promotes green living and educates people about many subjects related to women, including a history of Colonial-era women, herbalism, "The Not-so-good Golden Life of the Gilded Age Wife," a crash course in crystals and stone healing, how to make your own perfume from herbs, and much more.  These two speakers are fascinating and we encourage you to come to this program about how women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes.  The subtitle of the talk is: "The Evolution of Underwear & Our 19th Amendment."    The history of womens' underwear reveals a lot about their changing roles in society over time in America (and elsewhere) - how we perceive ourselves, and how we're viewed by others.  The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist, so women were finally able to breathe and move more freely.  Did the demise of tightlacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920?  Underwear matters.

This program is hands-on and paticipatory.  Tight corseting exerted 22 pounds of pressure on internal organs - find out what that actually feels like!   Experience the difficulty of completing everday tasks while wearing a corset.  Have you ever relay-raced in a hobble skirt?

Herstory Unsanitized presentations explore the engrossing "taboo" subjects omitted from history.  When a zany teacher and grounded green witch join forces, the fun team of Velya and Ehris bringing a gregarious personality and serene energy to enable this mother/daughter duo to connect with audiences.  Their delivery is funny and frank.  Laugh, grimace, and honor our foremothers journeys in this unique event!    It is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open the public.

Tonight's movie showing will be the hilarious comedy called "Isn't It Romantic?" starring Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra and Liam Hemsworth (c2019).  New York City architect Natalie (Rebel Wilson) works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city's next skyscraper.  And if things weren't bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious.  Upon waking, she discovers that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare - a romantic comedy and she is the leading lady!  This film is rated PG-13 for language, some sexual material and a brief drug reference, and the running time is 88 minutes.  Please come and be wonderfully entertained by a very funny story!    Please note that this movie is not appropriate for young children.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Local History Book Group" this evening.  The book to be read in advance is American Bloomsbury: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau: Their Lives, Their Loves, Their Work (Simon and Schuster, c2006) by Susan Cheever. People assume that the men and women behind the masterpieces of 19th-century American literature were dull and staid, but in Susan Cheever's book, new life is brought to these well-known literary types.  The author's dynamic work reminds us that these famous authors, who wrote such tales as The Scarlet Letter, Little Women, and Moby Dick, had lives which were sometimes scandalous and colorful, and they were often considered bohemian and avant-garde.  These writers were concentrated in Concord, Massachusetts, which Henry James called "the biggest little piece of America."  The members of this important group often became connected in romantic and intellectual ways which created some fascinating stories found in this title which we encourage all to read.  Please come and discuss it then with Will at this enjoyable event!  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  No signup is required so just drop by for a fun hour discussing an excellent book.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, March 23 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for March is Milk Street: the New Home Cooking by Christopher Kimball.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, March 2. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

There will be a celebration for National Poetry Month tonight which is in the month of April (so we're a little early).  We will host two local poets who will read from their books and discuss this genre with the audience.  The writers who will present their works tonight are Teisha Christie and Joshua Coben, and will have copies of their books for sale.

Writer Teisha Christie became inspired to find her poetic voice by observing the community in Dorchester where she was raised, as it was plagued by a serious drug epidemic in the late eightes and early ninties.  She had mixed emotions about the poverty and hardship on the one hand and then, on the other hand, people were tireless in the fight against these evils which meant endless possibilities for positive change.  Born in Cambridge, MA, she started to write when she was just 11 years old as a way to process her environment, and this led her to become involved in community service. She organized and attended poetry readings and peace rallies, and writing eventually led her to win a scholarship to Africa.  Ms. Christie traveled to Ghana, West Africa, on a community service project to assist in the building of a school.  This proved to be an emotional and spiritual mission, as well as very challenging and enlightening.  The lack of access to information and knowledge led her to recognize her purpose was to be called by God to write so that conditions of oppression and poverty could be improved through her voice.  She went back to school and earned her B.A. in English Literature with a minor in Religious Studies at Regis College.  She then worked with social service agencies who supported her goals and values to help others, and in 2011 she self-published and released the book Everything is True.  This poetry title reflects her experienecs and the environment she grew up in, and now she is working on her first novel called Evil in the Heavenly Realms which is to be released on 7/18/20.  Teisha wears many hats as a sister, friend, mentor, mother, woman of God, and mostly importantly, an author.

Joshua Coben's second book of poetry called Night Chaser (David Robert Books, 2020) will be published this month, and his first book called Maker of Shadows was published by Texas Review Press in 2010.   Night Chaser was a finalist for the Vassar Miller Prize, the New American Poetry Prize, and the Donald Justice Poetry Prize.  Josh's poems have appeared in Atlanta Review, The Cincinnati Review, College English, Pleiades, Poet Lore, and more.  He is a longtime classroom teacher in the Milton Public Schools, and he currently serves as the district's elementary librarian.  The poems in his second book seek to fathom the various selves, lived and imagined, that inhabit us.  Many such selves appear in it, whose title evokes both those who run toward ruin and those who try to keep it at bay.  Wherever they go - men's room or bedroom, oceanside or underworld, a city park where love first bloomed or a village hospital ravaged by an epidemic - they find in language a balm for lives of incessant longing and perpetual flight.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join us.

King, combined with sweet R&B ballads such as the Ray Charles classic, "Georgia."  Part-Time Lovers is a a very versatile and entertaining ensemble that will have you singing along and wanting to get up and dance.  We promise you will be glad you came to this event!

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x.3

Expert Kevin Gardner will give a talk about stone walls in New England.  Mr. Garder's informal presentation covers the history, technique, stylistic development, and aesthetics of stone walls.  He explains how and why New England came to acquire it's thousands of miles of stone walls, and their significance to the famous landscape here.  During this program Kevin occupies himself building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket.  He will bring along his collection of books about stonework, and copies of the two books he has written will be available for sale.

This speaker is a lifelong resident of Hopkinton, NH and like a lot of independent rural Yankees, he has worked as a jack of many trades: a builder, logger, writer, teacher, radio voice, and even an actor and director.  For more than 40 years, Kevin has been a stone wall builder in a family business widely known for traditional New England stonework, particularly for historic restoration of antique structures.  In 2001, he published The Granite Kiss: Traditions and Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls and in May 2017, his second book called Stone Building: How To Make New England Style Walls and Other Structures the Old Way was published.  He also has published poetry, songs, and essays, including "Land of Stone," an examination of several historic sites in the Monadnock Region, in the 2006 anthology Where the Mountain Stands Alone

Your host today will be Friends member Connie Spiros, and this program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join her for a fun and educational afternoon!

This evening there will be a talk to celebrate Earth Day called "Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau's Concord" by Professor Richard Primack, which is jointly sponsored by the Milton Public Library  and the Wakefield Estate.  Henry David Thoreau was a climate change scientist! For the past 17 years, Professor Primack and his team have been using Thoreau’s records from the 1850s and other Massachusetts data sources to document the earlier flowering and leafing out times of plants, the earlier flight times of butterflies, and the more variable response of migratory birds. Most noteworthy, plants in Concord are also changing in abundance due to a warming climate. This work has received extensive media coverage as an example of the biological effects of climate change, and is now being extended to the neglected autumn season.  What would Thoreau tell us to do about global warming if he were alive today?

Richard Primack is a Professor of Biology at Boston University with a specialization in plant ecology, conservation biology, tropical rain forest ecology, and climate change biology. He is the author of three widely used conservation biology textbooks; local co-authors have helped to produce 36 translations of these books with local examples. For nine years, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Biological Conservation, and served as the President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. His research has appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, National Geographic, and other publications, and he is often interviewed on National Public Radio. Primack also frequently gives talks and writes for the general public on issues of climate change and ecology, most recently the popular book Walden Warming: Climate Change Comes to Thoreau’s Woods.

Please join us for a fascinating program!

The film to be shown tonight is "a heartwarming look at the meaning of what a family really is."  It is called "Gifted" and stars Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Oscar Winner Octavia Spencer.    Frank Adler is a single man dedicated to raising his spirited young niece, Mary, a child prodigy.  But Frank and Mary's happy life together is threatened when Mary's mathematical abilities come to the attention of her overbearing grandmother - who has other plans for the girl.  You'll love every moment of this "deeply satisfying" film, which is free and open to the public.  It is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, language, and some suggestive material, and the running time is 101 minutes.  The film was produced in 2017, and this program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Have you lived with the same plantings for many years and now found they don't fit the way you want to be anymore?  Gardens should never be a burden to us.  What we want in our 20's and 30's is not the same as we want in later years.  Reconfiguring our garden for new uses as your family grows, and your life and interests change, makes sense and may be less work than you thought.  In this program by expert Betty Sanders, you wiill learn how to keep your gardens as your needs and abilities change.  It's a matter of plant selection and design, and will enhance your garden enjoyment for years.  Betty says that "personal experience is what led me to prepare this program."

Betty is a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Gardener Association and she is a nationally-accredited Master Flower Show judge.  She has studied gardening everywhere from the Arnold Arboretum to the New York Botanical Garden and the New England Wildflower Society, and she is also a scientist since she holds a degree in chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  She has lectured at the New England Flower Show, the Boston Flower & Garden Show, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Boston Public Library, Tower Hill Botanical Garden and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as at hundreds of garden clubs, civic organizations and corporations.

Please come to this informative and enjoyable event!

This program will be a dramatic presentation by Actress Kathryn Woods, as she depicts the life of Sojourner Truth.  "Sojourner recalls her early days as a slave, details her relationship with God, and shares poignant stories of her days walking through this land.  Ms. Woods uses Sojourner's own words and spiritual music to recreate this truly inspiring woman."  The presentation is less than one hour long, but there will be time at the end for questions and answers with Ms. Woods about Sojourner's life and work.  Please come and bring your children as this event is appropriate for all ages and it is very educational about the history of American slavery and emancipation.

We hope you will enjoy this unique program, which not only celebrates Black History and Womens History, but also tells a fascinating story about an incredible figure who made such a difference with her own perseverance and the way she lived her life.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and it is free and open to the public.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, May 18 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for May is TBA.

Registration will open on Monday, April 27. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Tonight we are offering a program called "Clothes Encounters: Victorian and Edwardian Apparel and Lifestyles" with presenter Sally Cragin.    Ms. Cragin has gathered many items of antique clothing belonging to men and women, and continues to research this topic.  Have you ever held a garmet sewn around the time of the Civil War?  Want to try on a military hat from the 1880s?  This talk will be about the history of fashion, as well as "what was appropriate" for certain genders and classes from about 1850 through the Jazz Age and beyond.  The collection includes undergarments (wool and cotton), uniforms from previous eras (shop girls, waitresses, housewives), and shoes.  The audience is allowed to handle, and in some cases, to try on these items.  Sally's collection also includes many antique handbags included beaded, cloisonne, needle-pointed, metallic, and unique ones which she has been unable to find similar examples on Ebay or antique sites!  As a historian, she loves bringing in examples of apparel to illustrate poetry or prose where she teaches at Fitchburg State University - creating a hands-on presentation for her has been a joy.  Please come check out a very fun and entertaining evening talking about fashion!  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.
