    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

From November lst through December 31st, Milton photographer Lauren Lombard will display her work virtually at our website.  Ms. Lombard attended Wheelock College and studied Education and Visual Arts.  She is a coastal Connecticut expat living in Milton with her husband and their 2 small children.   She is a right-brained visually creative type who survives solely on wit.  Photography has been a constant enjoyment for her throughout the years, both personally and professionally.  This exhibit will show some lovely images in both black and white, and color, and subjects include landscapes, people, animals and many more unique scenes.

This is what Lauren says about her beautiful photos: "I have been fortunate to visit many places in the world with my camera in tow.  For this exhibit, I have chosen a handful of my favorite photos from some of my travels, including Ireland, Puerto Rico, Mexico and various locations across the U.S.  I aim to create images that convey my own unique perspective on a given subject or situation.  Many of my favorite images have come from the least expected moments....Thank you for taking the time to look at my work.  I hope you enjoy it!  Stay well."

The photographer's website is: LaurenLombard.com and after 11/1 you can view the exhibit here: https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art

If you would like to apply for an exhibit, please Email Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jhlady@ocln.org or call her at (617) 898-4964.  We always welcome new artists!

    Contact: Will Adamczyk     miref@ocln.org

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his virtual Local History Book Group this evening via Zoom.  The book to be read in advance is Black Bostonians: Family Life and Community Struggle in the Antebellum North by James Horton (c1999).

This work creates a profile of Black Bostonians by examining lifestyles, family structure, culture, community, religion, and marriage patterns.   The title was first published in 1979 and then revised in 1999.  It brings to light many individual African Americans who lived and worked in Boston, including in the North End and Beacon Hill communities.  It is an important contribution to Boston history and we encourage you to participate in a lively discussion about it with Will online.

Advance registration is required at our website; a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  To reserve a copy of the book, please call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 or go to our website library catalog at www.miltonlibrary.org

This enjoyable program will be a virtual holiday concert with the talented vocalist Les Sampou and her pianist, Ed Grenga, otherwise know as"The Dirty Martinis."  Ms. Sampou has seven Rounder Records albums to her credit as she is an accomplished bluesy songwriter and recording artist from the Boston area.  The new jazz combo called "The Dirty Martinis" that she created with Ed Grenga is not to miss!  If you've seen and heard Les before, you know you're in for a treat no matter what style she sings.

Les Sampou has a four-octave range, and she will bring you unique and sultry interpretations of some of history's most beloved jazz tunes this evening.  And ace Pianist Ed Grenga brilliantly arranges classics made famous by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, George Gershwin and Harold Arlen.  Ed has worked as a songwriter, producer, and arranger for over 30 years. He has also scored over a dozen feature films, documentaries and TV shows.

This concert will be dedicated to The Great American Songbook and will also include some songs to inspire us for this most unusual holiday season, due to COVID.  You can just sit back and enjoy a virtual concert of inspiring and soothing tunes this year safely at home - our gift to you from the library.  Please join us!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

Author Russ Lopez will give a talk about his book called The Hub of the Gay Universe: An LGBTQ History of Boston, Provincetown and Beyond which was published in April 2019.  Mr. Lopez has written a very good summary of LGBTQ people, who have been an important presence in Massachusetts since the coming of Europeans in 1620.  They challenged gender, social, and sex norms in the 17th century, and contributed to the great effort to liberate LGBTQ people everywhere in the 20th and 21st centuries.  From the Trans Day of Remembrance to same-sex marriage, Boston has been at the forefront of the battle for LGBTQ rights.  Meanwhile Provincetown has been welcoming LGBTQ people to its beaches and nightspots since at least World War I.  This book also includes the torrid romances of 19th century actress Charlotte Cushman and the glamorous nightlife of 1950s Boston.

The author has produced a book of this magnitude working with many other people, including the History Project which holds the archives of LGBTQ people of Boston, and is one of the most important keepers of history in the country.  Research also included archives at the Boston Athenaeum, the New York Public Library, Northeastern University archives, Harvard University, Historic New England, and many other places.  It includes facts from interviews, oral histories, diaries, scholarly works by others, newspaper articles and newsletters.

Professor Russ Lopez.is a native of California and attended Stanford University and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.  He also received a doctorate from the Boston University School of Public Health.  His research is extensive and has been focused on the role of the neighborhood in long-term diet and exercise interventions, the influence of schoolyard renovations on student test scores, and the association between the neighborhood-built environment and obesity.  Dr. Lopez has published articles on the health effects of racial segregation, income inequlity and urban sprawl.  He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Enrivonmental Health at the Boston University School of Public Health.

Please join us for this informative and entertaining talk!   It is is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

In this enjoyable talk, college teacher, author and historian Sally Cragin is back with a fun Zoom program called "Prints of Plenty – A Visit with Currier and Ives.”

Printmakers Charles Currier and James Ives were in-law relations and revolutionalized home décor with their lithography business during the 19th century.  Ms. Cragin will examine prints, and talk about their themes (the beauty of New England, tragic accidents!) and at the end of the program, the audience can look at a REAL C&I print in Sally’s collection.  Their story is the story of America in the 19th century as they pioneered the assembly line, as well as introduced everyone to the dramatic landscapes of the frontier, as well as reminding us all about “home sweet home.”  Did you know they also specialized in disasters and competitions?  Horse racing was one of their most popular themes.

Ms. Cragin is an award winning journalist whose arts writing and theatre reviews appeared regularly in the Boston Phoenix, Boston Herald, and most recently the Boston Globe.  She has won two Penney-Missouri Journalism awards for feature writing.  From 1999 to 2001, she was the chief drama critic for the St. Louis Riverfront Times and has taught critical writing at several colleges, most recently at Fitchburg State University.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and will be conducted via Zoom.

    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

Join us for an "Armchair Travel" talk with world traveler Barry Pell as he tells us all about his trip to Iceland.  Iceland, an island nation in the North Atlantic, is about the size of Kentucky but with only 365,000 people.  It has captured the imagination since its settlement by the Vikings a thousand years ago to over two million annual visitors today.  While most tourists arrive in the warm months, the lecturer, Barry Pell, drove the entire circumference during the challenging winter weather season.  At this time, Iceland's attractions, its volcanoes, steaming hot springs and geysers, towering glaciers, black lava fields, and remote farms and churches, are dusted and glazed in a winter wonderland of snow and ice.  Add to this the wild reindeer herds, the hardy pony-sized Icelandic horses, and the surreal colors of the Northern Lights, to make winter a very special (and uncrowded) time to see the country.  The program will be accompanied by Mr. pell's photography.

Advance registration is required for this Zoom presentation, and once signed up, you will receive a Zoom connection link on the day of the program.  We hope you will join us!

This virtual event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

flags_ireland.png 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Brexit and the Implications for Ireland with Sean Murphy Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

The United Kingdom (UK) voted to leave the European Union (EU) in June 2016 by by a majority of 52 to 48 percent.  What followed was political chaos and eventually the UK left the EU on on January 31, 2020.  This began a transition period that is set to end on December 31, 2020, during which the UK and EU are negotiating their future relationship.  The UK remains subject to EU law and remains part of the EU customs union and single market during the transition, but is no longer part of the EU's political bodies or institutions.  The withdrawal agreement of October 2019 contained a commitment that there would be no physical border separating Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland and Europe.  It is not clear what this actually means in practice, but this should become clear as the transition period comes to an end.

This presentation will introduce the background to the decision of the UK to leave the EU.  It will cover the 2016 referendum and the chaos that ensued.  This will include an explanation of the Irish "Backstop" and its replacement in the 2019 Agreement.  The implications for ireland and the effects that the Brexit period had in Ireland will be dealt with in detail.

Sean Murphy is an Irish historian, Irish music and dance teacher, and he teaches through the Irish Cultural Center of NE in Canton, Cape Cod Sons of Erin, Cape Cod Cultural Center, the Cotuit Center for the Arts and at venues on Nantucket.  He has received several awards for his work as a supporter of the culture and heritage of Ireland.  He also leads a traditional Irish music session in O'Shea's Old Inne in West Dennis.  He was born and lived as a child in Dulbin and moved to Cape Cod in 2005.  He plays and teaches the tin whistle.

Advance registration is required; a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to participants on the day of the talk.
