rec_paint_palette.png Virtual Art Exhibit: Painter Michael Eder Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

From June 16th through July 31st, local painter Michael Eder will show his work in our virtual gallery.  This wonderful new display by a talented contemporary artist covers a range of interesting subjects with his colorful, modern pieces.  This is what Michael says about his work: "These Waterfalls and Rivers series are metaphors for both the present and the historic past states of chaos in our communities.  The destructiveness of water together with water as the source of life is the push and pull that has always drawn me to paint moving bodies of water.  During our confinement, I've made continuous studies of the Neponset, especially by the falls.  I'm learning about the stories of the Massachusett whose center was around the fresh and salt waters at the falls."

Michael was born in Bogota, Columbia with an Argentine mother and an American father.  Previously he worked in New Mexico; Banff, Canada; New Orleans; New York; and Maine.  Since moving to Milton 20 years ago, he has had his studio in Fort Point and now in the South End.  He teaches art at Boston Collegiate Charter School and has since 1999.

Please go to this link to see the exhibit: https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art - available starting June 16th.  And for more information about displaying your art at the Library, please contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jhlady@ocln.org

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp  talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize").  Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey, all native to New England, gives an overview of these different categories.     Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

Milton author J. Courtney Sullivan will give a talk about her new book called Friends and Strangers tonight via Zoom.  Summary: "From the best-selling author of Maine, a gorgeous, compulsively-readable novel that tells the story of the complex relationship between two women, Elisabeth, a privileged new mother and writer attempting to find her footing after childbirth, and Sam, the idealistic, working-class college student she hires to nanny her young son." -- Provided by publisher.

As part of the author's national tour, this event will be managed by the publisher Random House and it is co-sponsored by both Haley Booksellers (Haley Pubs is at https://tinyurl.com/ybuwkvlf) and the Friends of the Milton Public Library.    Many libraries in Massachusetts will participate, including Milton, and we are excited to be able to view a program by one of our own popular local authors!   Courtney's new book was released on June 30th and you can call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 to place a hold on it.  Howver since it's so new, you will probably not be able to check the book out before this program happens.

In order to view the author talk, you need to sign up in advance - but not here at our website.  Instead Random House asks that you go to this link to register and get a "ticket:"

Improbable Players: Group Chat

“Teens at Milton High School were moved watching the Improbable Players last year and we are thrilled to be bringing them back with their updated virtual performance called ‘The Group Chat’,” said Laurie Stillman, Director of the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (MSAPC).  The performance will take place on July 15th, 2020 at 8pm and is sponsored by the Milton Public Library, the Milton Health Department along with MSAPC.  Improbable Players is a theater troupe made up of young people in recovery. Their performances, based on real life, include a talkback session in which audience members can ask questions of the actors about the play and about their struggles with addiction.

“The Group Chat” follows four friends during their first year out of high school.  As one friend begins to use alcohol to deal with stress, the other friends in the group struggle to understand the true nature of addiction and how they can help.  This play explores how addiction can affect relationships, how to talk to someone you love when you feel concerned about their use of drugs and alcohol, and ultimately, the different pathways to recovery.

Ideal for teens and the adults who care about them, audience will be able to log on to the performance through Zoom to watch and then interact with the members of Improbable Players.  The link and instructions will be widely advertised and also available on the MSAPC website, milton-coalition.org

Author Lorenz Finison will give a virtual talk called "Bicycling: A History of Race, Class and Gender in Sport."  He will present his research into the 125 year sweep of bicycling history in the Boston area.  He will sum up his two books (Boston's Cycling Craze and Boston's 20th Century Bicycling Renaissance) on the topic and offer a glimpse into how bicycling has always involved "contested space."  Enduring themes are who cycles with whom, at what speeds, how dressed, and how connected to other modes of transportation.  These issues resonate to the present day.  Specific topics include African-American and women's cycling.  And there are Milton connections, too.

Lorenz Finison is a psychologist, public health consultant, and historian.  Beyond his two books, he is a Friend of the Bicycling History Collections at UMass-Boston.

The Galapagos Islands may just inspire you to think differently about the world.  Located on a remote archipelago of volcanic islands 600 miles west of Ecuador's Pacific coast, the Galapagos is home to massive tortoises, scurrying iguana lizards, playful sea lions, and a menagerie of exceptional birds from blue-footed boobies to red pouched frigate birds.  This isolated group of islands, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, is a nearly pristine showcase of biodiversity. Lecturer and photojournalist Pell recently visited the Galapagos and will discuss and present his photography of this splendid and fragile ecosystem.    The speaker is a world traveler and photojournalist.  He has traveled widely over five decades, visiting and documenting landscapes and cultures in nearly 170 countries on all continents.  He has also lived and traveled in China, Eastern Europe, North Africa, and South America.  He currently lectures on international cultures at schools, universities and institutions in the Boston area.

    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

Librarian and film buff Jean Hlady offers another fun and informal Zoom discussion of the film "Low Tide" and encourages everyone to join her!  In this series we watch a good movie in advance and then chat about the characters and the plot plus much more.  To watch this 2019 title in advance for free, use your OCLN library card and sign up for an account at our library service called: Kanopy. To do this, go to our website:  www.miltonlibrary.org and click on "E-Resources" from the main page, then "Kanopy" and either sign in or create an account (it's easy!) to watch the film.  Then search for the title which is easily accessed. and for questions about this, Email jhlady@ocln.org or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964.

"Low Tide"  tells the story of Alan, Red, and Smitty who spend high summer on the Jersey Shore, roving the boardwalk and getting into trouble.  But the discovery of good old-fashioned treasure sets them on an escalating course of suspicion and violence in this atmospheric thriller.  It is rated R for language, some violence, and teen drug use.  The San Francisco Public Library says: "Horror? No.  Thriller? Barely.  More like, a pretty decent coming of age film."

You must sign up for the discussion in advance and use this link to do so: https://tinyurl.com/y5h8u7xz    Registration opens on July 11th.

A Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program, which is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

flags_ireland.png 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Brexit and the Implications for Ireland with Sean Murphy Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

The United Kingdom (UK) voted to leave the European Union (EU) in June 2016 by by a majority of 52 to 48 percent.  What followed was political chaos and eventually the UK left the EU on on January 31, 2020.  This began a transition period that is set to end on December 31, 2020, during which the UK and EU are negotiating their future relationship.  The UK remains subject to EU law and remains part of the EU customs union and single market during the transition, but is no longer part of the EU's political bodies or institutions.  The withdrawal agreement of October 2019 contained a commitment that there would be no physical border separating Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland and Europe.  It is not clear what this actually means in practice, but this should become clear as the transition period comes to an end.
