During the month of January 2020, the Milton Public Library is hosting an exhibit of the artwork of Ed Bray in the Wotiz Gallery.  This exhibit will include architectural, figurative, and landscapes illustrations and portraits, using severl mediums including watercolor, colored pencil and graphite. After graduation from the Rhode Island School of Design and a concentration in illustration, Ed began his career in Minneapolis, MN where he worked for a company on pen and ink and marker layouts.  In addition to his commercial assignments, he focused on watercolor landscapes of the Midwest, which were exhibited at the Fuller Art Museum in Brockton, MA.  Examples of his illustrations appear in Drawing: Structure and Vision (c2008) by Fritz Drury and Joanne Stryker.  This artist is skilled in presentation artwork, such as storyboards and comps, as well as finished illustrations and fine art.  His work is featured in American Showcase, the Directory of Illustration, Behance and The Workbook.   Mr. Bray works and lives as a freelancer in Brockton, MA and is also a member of the arts League of Lowell.  He was featured in a November 2009 edition (both print and online) of The Lowell Sun.  He currently works as an illustrator for advertising agenices and consumer product companies, and does print ads, page spreads, T.V. Key Frames, marker comps, logos and other custom work.  Please come and enjoy this colorful and fascinating display of Ed Bray’s work this month, from 1/3/20 to 1/31/20.  For more information, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Rererence at jhlady@ocln.org.

objects_sewing.png Lower Level Art Exhibit: African Wall Hangings by Artist Beth Neville Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

From January 17th through March 31st there will be an exhibit of African wall hangings shown inside and outside the Keys Community Room, which is located on our Lower Level.   This display will show cloth banners created by Milton artist Beth Neville as African ethnic art, and they are beautiful, bright-colored pieces.  The title of the exhibit is the “Great Wall.”  America’s rich cultural heritage has many sources around the globe.  Beth celebrates one of them with this exhibit as she will display eight hand-stitched cloth banners.  She was inspired by African sculpture depicted in a book called African Sculpture Speaks (New York: Hill and Wang, c1961) by New York’s Ladislas Segy, which shows wood carvings of animals, humans, and spirit ancestors.  Her inspiration also comes from cloth originally hand-woven by the Asante and Ewe groups of Ghana.  Much of the fabric used to create this art comes from cloth that Beth has collected for decades, or that she has hand-painted.  These strands weave together to make a unique art synthesis.

Ms. Neville has lived her entire life in multi-cultural communities and she expresses that in her art, as she embraces all cultures as part of her rich American family.  The display will be broken up into two separate installations, one in the outside hall area and the other in the Keys Room.  The Milton artist Joyce Caggiano helped to stitch the borders on the banners, and the metal ornaments on them are from Nigeria.  Also during February Milton Access Cable will be airing 4 episodes about the creative process Beth used to make these banners.  Several Milton young people assisted with this project, including two recent immigrants from Nigeria.  Please come enjoy this very cool presentation this month and there will also be a free and open reception held in the Keys Community Room on with a date to be announced soon at our Eventkeeper.

Please come and enjoy some beautiful wall hangings this month on our lower level, which is open limited hours.  For more information about displaying your art here, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jhlady@ocln.org

Described as "Stunning.  A near-perfect movie," by Jordan Rulmy of The Playlist, "Puzzle" stars Kelly MacDonald, Irrfan Khan and David Denman.  This film, produced in 2018, tells the story of Agnes who, after years of concerning herself exclusively with the needs and wants of her husband and sons, has found something that she wants to do: puzzling.  Stepping out of her domestic bubble to pursue her new hobby, Agnes meets Robert, a wealthy, reclusive inventor who recruits her as his partner for an upcoming world jigsaw tournament.  Each day she spends out in the world takes Agnes further along on the road to a new understanding of herself.  This is a wonderful and heartwarming story, with a rating of R for language. The running time is approximately 103 minutes and it is free and open to the public.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join us for a tale you will not soon forget!

Unfortunately our original date for this program of 1/14/20 had to be postponed due to illness of the presenter, BUT tonight there will now be this fun program happening and we hope you will all come join us for an enlighting presentation!

Longtime Llewellyn Worldwide author Sally Cragin has been reading TaroT cards for years (actually decades), and when she started doing a talk at Roots Natural Foods in Leominster every Fall, she found that people were fascinated with the history of the cards, the meaning of the suits (pentacles or discs, swords, wands and cups) and the "Trump" or Major Arcana cards.  She uses the Ryder-Waite deck and talks about the Renaissance-era origins of the cards, and about art nouveau creator Pamela Colman-Smith and the iconography she used.  She has multiple decks, so this is truly a "hands-on" workshop.  This program is suitable for adults, teens and middle-schoolers.

"From the history of the cards to their meanings, Sally provided an engaging introductory lesson to TaroT.  Program participants very much enjoyed this class, and look forward to Sally's next presentation at the library." -- Kelley Rae Unger, Program Director, Peabody Public Library

The presenter is a resident of Fitchburg, MA and an instructor at Fitchburg State University.  She is also a freelance writer who speaks at many different venues, including libraries and schools.  She teaches classes about astrology, tarot card reading, palmistry, writing, several historical subjects, theater for children, recycling, and creating family memories and stories.

There is no sign-up required for this program and it is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Also there is a snow date scheduled for Tuesday, January 28th at 7 PM.

objects_easel.png Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Painter Sandrea Lovelock Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of February, talented artist Sandrea Lovelock-Williams will display her lovely paintings which depict people, still life images, and much more.    This exhibit will run from February lst through the 29th.  Sandrea teaches art at the Community Charter School Cambridge and has worked at several other educational institutions, including as a high school teacher for the Cambridge Ridge and Latin School.  She has a degree in Painting and Art Education from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston.

In 2019 one of her paintings, which was on display as part of the Fay Chandler Emerging Artist Awards at Boston City Hall, was chosen as the year’s winner as “Best in Show.”  This painting won over the jurors for its overall excellence.  The subject, a young man, stands in a corner and is dressed up, putting his weight on both feet.  His demeanor seems somewhat hesitant with a downward gaze.   The jurors described the painting as “a portrait of a young man on the edge of adulthood.”

Sandrea’s painting is further described as follows from the City of Boston website: “The execution is brilliant.  Williams makes rich color choices, uses masterful brush strokes, and is confident in her work with light and shadow.  She gives us an excellent sense of depth and texture.  William’s work shows both control of her medium as well as great potential for the future.  Well done!”  We hope you will come and view this colorful and enjoyable exhibit at the Library and there will also be a reception for this display held on the evening of Thursday, January 20th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery which is free and open to all.  The artwork of Ms. Lovelock-Williams is really wonderful to see!  Please try to stop by and view it during February.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Today there will be a one-hour concert with a group of excellent musicians called The Gregory Groover Jr. Group, who are affiliated with the Berklee College of Music.  Negro spirituals are at the bedrock of the African American musical experience, providing the foundation upon which many genres that are enjoyed now are built.  Although the composers of these spirituals are largely anonymous and nameless, their music named the non-anonymous tragedy of slavery, while also naming a steadfast hope for a better tomorrow - maybe not for them, but for the future generation.  The Negro Spiritual Songbook, Volume 1 is a product of that hope from the future generation.  It takes the words, melodies, and rhythms of that time and translates it into our current context of the 21st century.  The result is a soulful celebration of what was, a dynamic presentation of what is, and a warm invitation for what is to come.

The leader of this talented quartet, Gregory Groover Jr., says this about the music:  "The passion for this project emanated from the transformative effect negro spirituals have had on my life both personally and professionally as a musician.  The lyrics and harmonies instilled a deep sense of pride for the music of my heritage, helping me to have a better understanding of the jazz music I love to play.  Therefore, this project was accomplished through thorough examination of original scores, deep analyses of historical elements, and honest adaptations of arrangements.  The hope is that through touring The Negro Spiritual Songbook, Volume 1 at non-conventional jazz venues, such as churches, colleges and museums, the performances will not only be enjoyable but educational - helping to bridge the gap across many divides of society."

This program is free and open to the public, and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Janice Page and Joyce Kulhawik return to the Milton Public Library for our annual Handicapping the Oscars event.  With great banter and lots of fun, the duo will share their thoughts (and ask for yours too), regarding this year's nominees and who will take home the Oscar.

After many years at the Boston Globe, Janice Page joined The Washington Post in June as arts editor.  She manages the Post's coverage of the fine arts, including visual art, classical music, dance and theater, and leads an award-winning staff of critics and reporters as the Post expands its arts journalism to a national audience.

Joyce Kulhawik, best known as the Emmy Award-winning arts and entertainment critic for WBZ-TV, is an arts critic and advocate, motivational speaker, and cancer crusader. Kulhawik is President of the Boston Theater Critics Association, a member of the Boston Society of Film Critics, and Boston Online Film Critics Association. Joyce also writes for WBUR's The ARTery and RogerEbert.com.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x.3

There will be a 60-minute presentation this evening by storyteller, musician and political satirist Charle King and his program partner, Candace Cassin.  This powerful event will include the history of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, using songs, narratives by participants at the time, and it will include hundreds of historical images.  There will be plenty of opportunity for audience members to get involved in this inspiring program!   "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn me 'Round" offers the story of the Civil Rights Movement for African Americans from 1955 to 1967, highlighting activitists such as Rosa Parks, Fannie Lou Hamer and Ella Baker.

Charlie King is a musical storyteller who sings and writes passionately about the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.  Pete Seeger hailed him as "One of the finest singers and songwriters of our time."  Candace Cassin is a social service provider, spiritual director and teacher of Buddist practice.  They are married and live in Shelburne Falls, MA.  Charlie has been at the heart of American folk music for over half a century and has been writing songs for the past 45 years.  In October of 2017, he received the annual Phil Ochs Award, in recognition of his music and activism for social and political justice in the spirit of Phil Ochs.  His songs have been recorded and sung by other performers such as Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie, Peggy Seeger, Chad Mitchell and Judy Small.  Billboard said about him: "With encouraging regularity, Charlie King emerges from his self-reflection to remind us of the happy resilience of the human spirit.  His message songs vary between the funny and the frightening, but he pulls them off with unvarying taste, musical skill, and charm."  Please join us for a tribute to civil rights in the month of February.  This program is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Filmmaker Craig Dudnick has produced an incredible film which celebrates the selfless activists of the Chicago Freedom Movement.  He first met Alice Tregay when she contributed many wonderful photographs of her brother, former Evanston [Illinois] Fire Chief Sanders Hicks, to his previous film.  He had no idea at that time of her status as heroine of the Civil Rights Movement.    He hopes that "Alice's Ordinary People" will inspire future generations to "take up the mantle and continue the fight."

Alice's life story reads like a history of the movement.  Early on she fought the "Willis Wagons."  The second-class structures were built to relieve overcrowding in those Chicago schools which served the African American community.  Their very existence perpetuated segregation.  In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago.  Alice and her husband James Tregay, marched with him, often at great personal risk.  It was at this time that Dr. King joined the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and the Reverend James Bevel to form Operation Breadbasket.  Breadbasket fought racism on many fronts, but its main task was jobs for African Americans, particularly from those businesses drawing profits from the African American community.Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson, the months that Alice and her "ordinary people" spent picketing led to real change.  But it was through her Political Education class that Alice had her most significant impact.  Over a four-year period, thousands were trained to work in independent campaigns.  This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress (this time as an independent Democrat), to the election of Harold Washington, Mayor, and to making Barack Obama our first African American President.

Alice's contribution is unique in American history, and an hour program can only tell so much.  It is Mr. Dudnick's hope that one day a book will also be written on this important subject.  Please come view this film and be inspired!  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  The running time is 56 minutes but the start time remains promptly at 6:30 PM.  The documentary is unrated.

How to Create a Graphic Novel Page Workshop with author Jonathan Todd!

Like reading comics and graphic novels? Now, it’s your turn to start your own in this 1-hour, comics-making boot camp! We’ll discuss character development and plot strategy, then you’ll be coached in drawing a graphic novel page. You’ll learn how to create a small sketch—or thumbnail—of your page; then, you’ll learn how to create finished art. In addition to storytelling, topics include lettering, penciling, and inking.

Jonathan Todd is the author and illustrator of the forthcoming middle-grade graphic novel Timid (Scholastic 2021). Todd is also co-founder of the Boston Kids Comics Fest. A graduate of the Solstice MFA in Creative Writing program.

This 90-minute presentation with time for questions at the end will be given by Ehris Urban and Velya Jancz-Urban of the "Grounded Goodwife" which is a Connecticut-based company that promotes green living and educates people about many subjects related to women, including a history of Colonial-era women, herbalism, "The Not-so-good Golden Life of the Gilded Age Wife," a crash course in crystals and stone healing, how to make your own perfume from herbs, and much more.  These two speakers are fascinating and we encourage you to come to this program about how women have allowed themselves to be squeezed, twisted, and squished to conform to desired shapes.  The subtitle of the talk is: "The Evolution of Underwear & Our 19th Amendment."    The history of womens' underwear reveals a lot about their changing roles in society over time in America (and elsewhere) - how we perceive ourselves, and how we're viewed by others.  The 1910s saw an end to the hourglass figure with a tiny waist, so women were finally able to breathe and move more freely.  Did the demise of tightlacing help women gain the right to vote in 1920?  Underwear matters.

This program is hands-on and paticipatory.  Tight corseting exerted 22 pounds of pressure on internal organs - find out what that actually feels like!   Experience the difficulty of completing everday tasks while wearing a corset.  Have you ever relay-raced in a hobble skirt?

Herstory Unsanitized presentations explore the engrossing "taboo" subjects omitted from history.  When a zany teacher and grounded green witch join forces, the fun team of Velya and Ehris bringing a gregarious personality and serene energy to enable this mother/daughter duo to connect with audiences.  Their delivery is funny and frank.  Laugh, grimace, and honor our foremothers journeys in this unique event!    It is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open the public.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, March 23 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for March is TBA.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, March 2. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

The film to be shown tonight is "a heartwarming look at the meaning of what a family really is."  It is called "Gifted" and stars Chris Evans, McKenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Oscar Winner Octavia Spencer.    Frank Adler is a single man dedicated to raising his spirited young niece, Mary, a child prodigy.  But Frank and Mary's happy life together is threatened when Mary's mathematical abilities come to the attention of her overbearing grandmother - who has other plans for the girl.  You'll love every moment of this "deeply satisfying" film, which is free and open to the public.  It is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, language, and some suggestive material, and the running time is 101 minutes.  The film was produced in 2017, and this program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, May 18 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for May is TBA.

Registration will open on Monday, April 27. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Tonight we are offering a program called "Clothes Encounters: Victorian and Edwardian Apparel and Lifestyles" with presenter Sally Cragin.    Ms. Cragin has gathered many items of antique clothing belonging to men and women, and continues to research this topic.  Have you ever held a garmet sewn around the time of the Civil War?  Want to try on a military hat from the 1880s?  This talk will be about the history of fashion, as well as "what was appropriate" for certain genders and classes from about 1850 through the Jazz Age and beyond.  The collection includes undergarments (wool and cotton), uniforms from previous eras (shop girls, waitresses, housewives), and shoes.  The audience is allowed to handle, and in some cases, to try on these items.  Sally's collection also includes many antique handbags included beaded, cloisonne, needle-pointed, metallic, and unique ones which she has been unable to find similar examples on Ebay or antique sites!  As a historian, she loves bringing in examples of apparel to illustrate poetry or prose where she teaches at Fitchburg State University - creating a hands-on presentation for her has been a joy.  Please come check out a very fun and entertaining evening talking about fashion!  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.
