elect_camera.png Virtual Photography Exhibit: Celebrating the Changing Face of Milton Families Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

This 2012 photography exhibit was first displayed 8 years ago at the Library on our lower level in honor of the Town's 350th anniversary.  It will now be shown virtually at our website for two months, to feature family portraits of friends and neighbors who lived within a few streets of the Milton, MA home of resident Deborah Milbauer.  The idea was first conceived after Milbauer slowly discovered - by dumb luck 20 years ago - that she and her family had landed in such an incredible neighborhood of diverse and beautiful families.  Over time, these families came to enrich her own family's life.  At the time, Deborah wanted to find  a way to honor her neighbors and celebrate the changing face of Milton.  She realized the Town's 350th anniversary was a fitting opportunity to capture a "then and now" perspective.  The families in this online exhibit represent over 20 countries of origin, a dozen religions, tens of spoken languages, blended famlies, mluti-racial/multi-cultural families, families with adopted children and same sex familites.  With 8 years now in the rear-view mirror, Milbauer sees the photographs, with their accompanying descriptions, as a vehicle to tell a bigger story of identity, community and belonging.  This 2012 exhibit was her first (and only) photography display.  Her second exhibit, showing more Milton families, is planned for late 2021.

Deborah is a resident of Milton and an amateur photographer.  She wears many hats including Town Meeting Member from Precinct 4, volunteer with the Pine Tree Brook Neighborhood Association and Courageous Conversations Towards Racial Justice, Public Health Consultant to the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Milton Health Depratment, and a Senior Lecturer at Northeastern University in the Department of Health Sciences.  She holds a dual Masters in Public Health and Social Work from Boston University, and has worked in the field of public health for 30 plus years related to HIV/AIDS, substance use disorder, homelessness, opioid overdose, and harm reduction.  She is married to Corey Dolgon, an accomplished musician and Sociology Professor at Stonehill College.  Deborah is also the proud mother of 2 daughters - one at Pierce Middle School and the other at Milton High School. We hope you will enjoy this wonderful display at our website in the New Year!

objects_easel.png 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Pastel Painting Workshop: The Miracle Flowers inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

Have you attended artist Greg Maichack's workshops here at the library in the past?  Well, this popular art instructor will be back via Zoom to provide instruction about how to paint like Georgia O'Keeffe and the "Miracle Flowers."  You can sign up here for this enjoyable two-hour program, but you do have to buy some supplies to have on hand at home to participate.  Here is the list of what you will need to paint along with Greg:

The Miracle Flowers, only need a few colors. They are:

1) red pastels for the edges of the flowers blended toward the center and also out from the center
2) sap green (the yellow green)
3) dark green one, for some suggested leaves
4) white
5) light blue
6) ultramarine blue for a vaporous sky as background

Also a white charcoal pencil and red pencil are needed (Go to Dick Blick for these below). Everyone has an eraser so they can use any they have.
As long as people buy the colors (soft pastels not oil pastels) listed here, and the two pencils and gray paper, they can buy them from any source.

But, just in case, following are some "best price" choices for certain supplies, suggested by Greg Maichack, that you might consider when buying the pencils and paper for this class:

Original price:List $21.56    Current price: $13.64 Blick’s Best Price.

Gray paper for Miracle Flowers
Canson Mi-Teintes Board
It is Canson Paper (high quality paper with the most cotton in it), adhered to a stiff panel (or board) so it is easy to use and to frame. Any gray pastel paper or paper with tooth for Miracle Flowers would do if people can find it  (but sometimes you have to buy a pack of paper and then it could cost more).
The size should be close to12 X 18 inches (or larger).

All are from Dick Blick:

2) Canson Mi-Teintes Board
Item # 13019-2408
No 120
Color Pearl Gray
Size 16 X 20
Description: Single Board
Price: $3.73

3) General's Charcoal Pencil White
Item # 20418-1001
Price: $1.38

4) Stabilo all colored marking pencils: Red
Item number : 20408-3001
Price; $1.29

So that's it and we are looking forward to seeing you online at 6 PM for this fun workshop!  Signup will start here on December 15th and space is limited.  If you have any questions about the program, please Email jhlady@ocln.org     Once you have registered, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the event.

Artist Greg Maichack has been a faculty member of the Museum Studio School in the Fine Arts Museum Quadrangle in Springfield, MA and taught at Holyoke and Greenfield Community Colleges as well as other academic institutions.  This workshop is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency.

The Milton Public Library's Cookbook Club is a group of adults who enjoy cooking and sharing food together. While we're staying at home, we've decided to take our act online!

Please join us on Wednesday, January 27 at 6:00 pm for a virtual meeting. This month, we will be departing from our usual format. Here's what you need to do in order to participate:

  • Acquire a copy of the book, which will be available in January. You may either order the book yourself (order form available at mplfriends.org), or reserve a Library copy for checkout.
  • Recipe and ingredients: To Be Announced
  • On the 27th, you may either prepare the dish alongside Connie, or you may watch and ask questions. We will meet via Zoom, and I will send a Zoom link to everyone on the day of the program.
  • Afterwards, recipes and pictures will be available on our Cookbook Club Libguide.

elect_video_camera.png 7:30 PM  -  8:30 PM The Story of the Crawford Family and Civil Rights with Filmmaker Craig Dudnik Remind Me about this Event 3 Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady     jhlady@ocln.org

This is a program about the injustice of being black in America.  Filmmaker Craig Dudnik has created a film called "Evanston's Living History" which tells about a people paying a big price for rights and liberties that many of us take for granted; a community whose indomitable spirit influenced the conscience of a nation.  To attend this program, you do not have to watch the film first.  Starting with Anthony Crawford, born into slavery in 1865 in Abbeville, South Carolina, through Emancipation, the promise of Reconstruction, and the Crawford family acquiring 400 acres of prime cotton land, Mr. Dudnik will tell us what happened when the Jim Crow South emerged after the withering of Reconstruction.  Mr. Anthony Crawford was brutally lunched in Abbeville in 1916 and the family was forced to flee to Evanston, Illinois and to the institutionalized racism of the North.  However, Mr. Crawford's descendants, alongside the families of Emmett Till, Michael Schwerener, James Earl Chaney, and Andrew Goodman worked to gain passage of the U.S. Senate Resolution 39, which apologized for the failure of the Senate to enact anti-lynching legislation.

From this talk, learn about Evanston's greatest generation, and their courageous fight to free the city from the bondage of racial discrimination.  You will hear stories about the celebrated accomplishments of several black Evanston residents, including Edwin Jourdain, the city's first black alderman, former police chief William Logan, former fire chief Sanders Hicks, and former mayor Lorraine Morton.  Says Dudnik: "The individual stories combine to tell a national story about a group of people who transformed a community through dignity and humanity."  We encourage you to attend this event via Zoom, and be inspired by the courageous fight for freedom and equality.

Craig Dudnik graduated from Northwestern University, received a national award for his camerawork on the syndicated television program, PM Magazine, and founded Imagine Video Productions, eventually gaining clients from all over the world, and especially at ABC News.  He covered the Democratic National Convention in 1996 as a news cinematographer, and became lifelong friends with Mrs. Viola Hillsman while in college, who introduced him to many of her friends.   After she passed away at the age of 100, he remained in contact with several of these individuals who then shared personal accounts of their struggles against racism which became the basis for this film.  Craig has also created the film "Alice's Ordinary People" about Civil Rights activist Alice Tregay, which we showed at the library in Spring 2019.  Mr. Dudnick's documentaries have been acquired by hundreds of public and university libraries worldwide.

Advance registration is required here; a Zoom connection link will then be Emailed to you on the day of the program.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Local author and WCVB television host Ted Reinstein will give a virtual talk called "Fighting Back: New England Underdogs" via Zoom.  This presentation will profile several extraordinary people who overcame enormous odds and daunting challenges to create, succeed, or just live a life of inspiring worth and dignity.  While some of these stories are also culled from his 3 books, others are from more recent Chronicle programs.  All are brand-new elements as a talk, and have not been included in his previous book events.

Mr. Reinstein is best known in New England as a journalist and reporter for Chronicle, Boston's celebrated (and America's longest-running, locally-produced) TV news-magazine.  In 2002, he was part of the Chronicle team honored with a prestigious national Dupont-Columbia Broadcast Journalism Award for their coverage of Boston's controversial "Big Dig," the nation's largest-ever public works project.  While he also appears in the studio at the anchor desk or delivering an opinion commentary, it's out in the field where viewers are most familiar seeing Ted.  From every corner of new England, he's found the offbeat, the unique, the moving, and the just plain memorable, all while telling the enduringly colorful stories of the region's people and places.  He is a prolific author, a celebrated actor, and is the co-author of a full-length play called "Yom Kippur in Da Nang."  He will also be joining us again via Zoom in April with a program called  "The New Normal New England Road Trip."

This virtual event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library, and is free and open to the public.  Advance registration is required, and a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the scheduled date.  We encourage you to download the Zoom link to your electronic device in advance. Please join us for a fun and fascinating program!

Professional Genealogist and Historian Michael Brophy will give a virtual talk via Zoom about the Orphan Trains, which is the real-life story of the 19th to 20th centuries movement of sending orphaned children from the counties out into the country.  From 1854 to 1929, over 200,000 children were transported from New York to the Midwest and beyond in the United States.  The history, genealogy, and legacy of the movement will be explained and discussed.  You will learn about the Children's Aid Society of New York - the founding of the organization and intentions - along with other charitable agencies who had to care for 3,000 children in NYC in 1850.  These kids were referred to as "street Arabs."  Another topic included in this program is the life of Charles Loring Brace, and the process of how children were chosen for relocation after given Bibles but were never formerly adopted.  Mr. Brophy has many fascinating true stories to tell about this movement which were shared by "Orphan Train Riders."  There was a significant toll on the emotional health of these kids, which gave way - after the trains were ended - to modern foster care.  Also research about Orphan Train ancestry will be shared with the audience in this interesting and educational presentation.  Please join us!

Advance registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.

Avid hiker and author Marjorie Turner Hollman will give a presentation about "Easy Walks in Massachusetts" this evening.  Her latest book is called Finding Easy Walks Wherever You Are, and she has also written Easy Walks in Massachusetts,  More Easy Walks in Masachusetts, and Easy Walks and Paddles in the Ten Mile River Watershed.   The outdoors has been a refuge for many of us throughout the pandemic this year.  But many places we visit are crowded, and some are not well-suited to our abilities.  Join this author virtually and learn about lots of wonderful outdoors spaces that are handicapped-friendly, great for parents, grandparents, and children too!

Can't walk very far?  Distances of each trail are included in her books, along with much more information to help you prepare to have a great time outdoors.  This speaker has some great resources for learning about well known but also less traveled walks.  Find new trails, learn safety tips, get a list of essential items you need to take with you on every walk, and so much more.  She has lots of suggestions, experience and ideas that can help you have a more positive experience in the out-of-doors.
