rec_paint_palette.png Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Artist Thato Mwosa Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Talented Milton artist Thato Mwosa will be displaying her work this month in the Wotiz Gallery. Ms. Mwosa is a multifaceted artist who is the owner of Tuli Art, a business that specializes in ballerina illustrations.  When she started decorating her daughter Tuli's room, Thato wanted a ballerina-themed decor.  After finding that black/brown ballerina art was scarce, Thato decided to make illustrations inspired by her daughter.  The result is a truly remarkable array of ballerinas in different poses wearing bold and vibrant costumes.  These ballerina silhouettes represent girls of any color.  This is what she says about her work: "I believe in personalizing the ballerina illustrations as much as I can.  My customers give me the name of their daughters/granddaughters/nieces, etc...and their favorite colors.  After that the magic happens.  Sometimes I even add a little bedazzling on the illustrations!"  she says.  So far Thato has illustrations of over 50 ballerinas including ones named in homor of Misty Copeland, Ingrid Silva and Michaela DePrince.  Ballerinas are not the only illustrations that Thato enjoys.  She also created the Afrik Art series, which features women wearing bold and vibrant Afro centric fabric.  And her animal series is specifically created for kids or nursery room decor.  The illustrations are often in bold, constrasting colors, which create a compelling palette.  Thato has now introduced new products including tote bags, ballerina t-shirts and postcards to her Tuli Art line as well.

This artist is also an award-winning filmmaker and a TV/Film Instructor in Boston.  She is currently working on her MFA in Stage and Screen Writing at Lesley University.  She is a wife and a mother of three precious kids: two boys and one girl.  To reach Thato, you may Email her at tuliartshop@gmail.com or go to her website which is: www.tuliart.com.

There will be a closing reception in the gallery on Thursday, May 30th, from 6-8 PM.  Please stop by on May 30th, meet the artist, and view her lovely work.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Monday, May 20 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for May is Bring It! by Ali Rosen.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Monday, May 6. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Tonight there will be a free screening of a completely all-consuming movie called "Adrift"  ( 2018) which stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin.  It is based on the inspiring true story of two free spirits whose chance encounter leads them first to love, and then to the adventure of a lifetime.  As the two sailors set out on a journey across the ocean, Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp couldn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history.  In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins.  With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.  "Adrift" is the unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love.  This is "A white-knuckle survival tale!" according to Entertainment Weekly.  Please join us for a riveting story!   The film's length is one hour and 40 minutes, and it is rated PG-13 for "injury images, peril, language, brief drug use, partial nudity, and thematic elements."  Therefore it is not appropriate for young children.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

This evening there will be a presentation by Milton author Cully Lundgren about the book he wrote called Mom, There's A Scorpion in my Pants (c2018).  Taking risks can be really scary.  Yet risk-taking can also result in rich, transformative experiences and memories that last a lifetime.  In 2016, Cully and Miriam Lundgren and their two sons, Harlan and Olle, picked up from their comfortable life in Massachusetts and landed in a small village in rural Nicaragua.  They didn't speak Spanish or know any of their neighbors, and were not accustomed to going without water or electricity for long stretches of time.  Over the course of almost the next year, they learned - usually the hard way - how to do laundry by hand, to co-exist with spiders, wild dogs, and scorpions, to ride out earthquakes and floods with a smile, and to communicate (sometimes unintelligibly) in another language.  They also learned the benefits that a slower pace of life and unhooking from technology can bring.  Most importantly, during a time of great polarization of people due to ideological and political differences in the US, they came to experience a deeper meaing of community, one in which their neighbors became their family, and the people they met on the bus, their friends.  They learned how good they really have it living in the United States, and that they possess the resources and responsibility to help others by giving back, sacrificng some of their comforts along the way.  Join the Lundgrens in their year-long quest to understand themselves and others in a new, deeper way.  And if you're game after finishing this book, consider a risk you can take, knowing that it could lead you into unexpected, unforgettable directions.

Cully Lundgren never fancied himself as an author prior to writing this book. He had committed to penning updates about his family's expeiences in Nicaragua, but figured that would be the end of it.  Yet as he wrote, he felt the updates turning into stories with deep meaning, revealing not only the adventures they experienced but the lives of the people around them.  Since September of 2017, he has been working with Oxfam America, raising funds fto fight poverty and inequality, adressing many of the challenges that the Lundgren family witnessed in El Tololar.  Please join us for this inspiring talk!

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and your host will be staff member Sally Lawler.

In the Wotiz Gallery this month, we are pleased to host the artwork of Milton resident Dr. Prasanta Mitra.  Dr. Mitra is a painter and also does some pen and ink drawing, and his pieces are varied, colorful and fun to see!  This exhibit will be called "Learning Forever" and it will be comprised of many different images, including landscapes, people and animals.  Prasanta has a true love of art and has been concentrating on drawing and painting more since he retired from medicine.  He began taking classes with the excellent teacher Michael Donima of Hull, and he also studied with another great teacher, Robert Farrell of Squantum.  He studied watercolor, acrylic painting, and also tried his hand at pen and ink sketching.

This is what he says about his life and his work:  "I was born in Kolata, India and came to the United States for higher education and training in medicine.  I was a urological surgeon and practiced in several hospitals for 40 years, including Quincy, Milton and South Shore Hospital and a five-year stint at VA hospitals, both in West Virginia and Boston.  Although I did not have much time outside practicing medicine, all my life I had been interested in artistic pursuits, especially photography, and I was a member of the South Shore Camera Club for many years.  But it was not until some years after I retired from medicine that I really began to immerse myself in painting and sketching....It is incredible how you start to see the world differently when you make art - shadows and shades of color take on new dimensions and meaning.  I am still learning to find my own "voice" in my art as I work on various subjects and moods.  I believe that learning should be a continuous and lifelong engagement.  It is never too late to try something new.  If, from this display of art by a novice student, I can motivate anyone of any age to make art - whether a complete beginner or someone who wants to get back to it after awhile - I will consider my mission is a success.  Please note that half of the proceeds from any sales shown in this display will be donated to BID-Milton Hospital, a wonderful and important institution in my life."

So we are honored to host the work of Prasanta Mitra from June lst through 30th, and encourage you to come and take a look at this lovely exhibit when you are in the Library.  If you are interested in applying for a Gallery display, please contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 or Email her at jhlady@ocln.org    There will be a reception for this exhibit - date soon to be determined.  More details will follow here soon.

Tonight there will be a free screening of an excellent film.  It's called "On the Basis of Sex" (c2018) and it tells an inspiring and spirited true story that follows young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she teams with her husband Marty to bring a groundbreaking case before the U.S. Court of Appeals and overturn a century of gender discrimination.  The feature premiered in 2018 in line with Justice Ginsburg's 25th anniversary on the Supreme Court.  If you saw the movie "RBG," you will so enjoy this dramatic portrayal of an incredible lawyer and feminist in this portrayal, which stars Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer.  It is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive content, and the length is 2 hours.  This is a very compelling film which so well acted, and we encourage you to join us for "Tuesday Night at the Movies."  This even is free and open to the public, it starts promptly at 6:30 PM,  and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

"Ask A Muslim Anything" is a program developed by photojournalist, columnist and public speaker Robert Azzi.  Mr. Azzi is from Exeter, NH and has developed this important two-hour discussion which starts at 6:30 PM this evening.   Mr. Azzi has been traveling throughout New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maine at the invitation of communities to speak about his life, what it's like to be Muslim in America, how he came to convert to Islam, about the religion of Islam and its history - especially in America - and about the Middle East, terrorism and associated political and social issues.  He says: "Nothing is off the table, I'm having fun doing it and I'm learning more about this great country and my wonderful neighbors than I ever expected when I started this venture." ....I think this is an important model; while there'll always be the odd person who will refuse to engage - or whose mind is closed to dialogue - the vast majority of people want to know who their neighbors are and what they believe.  Most will, I believe -  and my experience suggests - eventually come to understand that we've all been made diverse peoples so that we will come to know each other - and that to know each other we must reach out and talk to each other."

Robert is an Arab-American Muslim, he writes on issues of identity, conflict, and Islam, particularly as they apply in the Middle East and the Global South.  Born in New Hampshire, he's lived in Beirut, Cairo, Athens, Jeddah and New York.  Although he returned to the Granite State in the late 1980s, he continues to travel to visit and work in the Middle East.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Please join us!

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Eclectic Book Group" this evening.  The book to be read in advance is Marauders by Tom Cooper (c2015).  This work of fiction is set in a small bayou town devastated by the BP oil spill, and it is a darkly hilarious debut novel from the author. When the BP oil spill devastates the Gulf coast, those who made a living by shrimping find themselves in dire straits.  For the oddballs and lowlifes who inhabit the sleepy, working-class bayou town of Jeanette, these desperate circumstances serve as the catalyst that pushes them to enact whatever risky schemes they can dream up to reverse their fortunes.  At the center of it all is Gus Lindquist, a pill-addicted, one-armed treasure hunter obsessed with finding the lost treasure of pirate Jean Lafitte.  His quest brings him into contact with a wide array of memorable charavters, ranging from a couple of small-time crinimal potheads prone to hysterical banter, to the smooth-talking oil company middleman cut to bamboozle his own mother, to some drug smuggling psychopath twins, to a young man estranged from his father since his mother died in Hurricane Katrina.  As the story progresses, these charactesr find themselves on a collision course with each other, and as the tension and action ramp up, it becomes clear that not all of them will survive these events.   To find a copy of this title, go to our Borrower Services desk on the first floor of the Library and you can check one out from the reserve shelf.  Please join Will for an interesting discussion about a riveting book.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

Hallie brings her newest mystery to her hometown and the Milton Public Library.  Careful What You Wish For  is inspired by Marie Kondo and the de-cluttering craze, and Hallie explores the relationships built by professional organizers and their clients—showing just how easily the lines between professional and personal can be blurred.
Hallie Ephron is the New York Times bestselling author of Never Tell a Lie, Come and Find Me, There Was an Old Woman, Night Night, Sleep Tight, and You’ll Never Know, Dear. She grew up in Beverly Hills, the daughter of Hollywood screenwriters, and lives in Milton.

Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his "Eclectic Book Group" this evening.   The book to be read in advance is Last Cowboys of San Geronimo by Ian Stansel (c2017).  This is a contemporary western debut about two brothers locked in a deadly feud, a woman on horseback trailing her husband's killer, and the inescapable ties of home and family.

When Silas Van Loy flees home on horseback to avoid capture for his brother's murder, he is soon followed by both the police and his brother's we, Lena, who is intent on exacting revenge. She reluctantly lets her trusted stable assistant join her in a journey across the wilds of Northern California in the hopes of catching Silas for one final showdown. Stansel follows the chase and shares the story of the brothers' rise from hardscrabble childhood to their reign as the region's preeminent horse trainers, tracking the tense sibling rivalry that ultimately leads to the elder's death.

This is a fully realized tale that challenges notions of the modern West, The Last Cowboys of San Geronimo will satisfy fans of Kent Haruf, Larry McMurtry, Molly Gloss, and Smith Henderson, and establish Stansel as a new voice in this grand tradition.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and stop by the Reference desk to place a reserve on the book.  Copies will also be available on our reserve shelf at the first floor Borrower Services desk.  Join Will for an enjoyable read and discussion.
