    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

Starting on March lst and running through April 30th  there will be a wonderful virtual art display hosted by the Milton Public Library to show the work of painter Elizabeth Lazeren.   This exhibit will inspire us all as we enjoy some beautiful and colorful landscapes and more.  This artist uses “memory, experience, and imagination.  She works toward paintings that have a clarity of mood but a vague sense of place.  Choosing elements that are signature components of her work, she distills a painting, working towards the goal of emotional and intellectual clarity.  Her paintings are in collections from Los Angeles to Newfoundland to the Hart Senate Building in Washington, D.C.”

Ms. Lazeren creates many images of the sea.  She was trained at the Harford Art School, and at Wesleyan University, and has had several juried shows.  These shows include the Copley Biennial Marine Show, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Providence Art Club, the Cape Cod Art Association, and many more.  She received an invitation to display one of her paintings at the Cape Cod Museum of Art for both 2019 and 2020, and was an Artist-in-Residence in 2014 at the Weir National Historic Site in Wilton, CT.  Her work is displayed at the Hart Senate Offices of former Senator Lieberman in Washington, D.C. to receive the “President’s Award” in 2011-2013, and she has received lots of other prestigious honors for her paintings.   Elizabeth’s art has also been published in Spectator Magazine, Provincetown Banner, Who’s Who in American Art, The Hartford Courant, and others.  She was awarded the “Fine Art Studio Online Feature Artist” by Cape Cod Life Magazine – Design in 2013 as well.

This is what the artist has to say about her craft: “I live in Truro, Cape Cod and have been painting since I was 12 years old.  I have taught painting to all ages and I continue to seek out workshops from masters that will help me become a better painter.  The outer Cape is where I find the seascapes, art, fellow painters, maritime history and support system that influences my work.  Living in this beautiful, seafaring place, I am inspired by its history, environment and the people.  I use memory, experience, and imagination when painting….I will begin by making several loose value sketches before I set up my canvas.  My process at the easel begins with thinking that less is more and so I distill an image while constructing it in my mind and then on the canvas…”

Please view this exhibit at www.miltonlibrary.org starting March lst by using the following link: https://miltonlibrary.libguides.com/art

Please join the Milton Public Library and the Friends of the Library for a virtual visit with author Holly McGhee and illustrator Pascal Lemaitre! They will be sharing their new picture book, called What the World Could Make, coming out May 4 from Roaring Brook Press. We'll have time to hear the story, perhaps enjoy a drawing demonstration, and ask all of our questions about what it's like to make books. Best of all, Holly speaks English and Pascal speaks French, so this will be a bilingual event!

For ages 4 and up. Registration is required, and a Zoom link will be provided to registrants on the day of the event. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

If you'd like to preorder your own copy of the book, please visit: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250268112

Here's some information about our speakers:

  • Holly M. McGhee is the author of the middle-grade novel Matylda, Bright & Tender, an Amazon, Bank Street, and ABC Best Book of the Year, as well as the bestselling picture books, Come with Me and Listen, both illustrated by Pascal Lemaitre. She divides her time between New York City, where she helps bring books she loves into the world as a literary agent, and Maplewood, New Jersey.
  • Pascal Lemaître is the illustrator of several books for children, including Do Not Open This Book! and New York Times bestseller Who's Got Game?, as well as the bestselling picture books, Come with Me and Listen, both written by Holly M. McGhee. His wife is the dancer-choreographer Emmanuele Phuon. They live with their daughter, Maelle, in Brussels, Belgium where Pascal is a professor at the National School of Visual Arts of La Cambre.

Start Your Own Seeds!

Did you know that seeds are baby plants just waiting for the right conditions to grow?! We will investigate a variety of seeds, including seeds you have in your kitchen, and learn about what they need to grow. This program will be led by a Green City Growers farmer educator and feature a glimpse into what is happening in our greenhouse and gardens, a picture book related to planting seeds, and a demonstration to teach you how to plant and care for your seeds after they sprout. Our farmer will show you how to retrofit whatever containers you have on hand and figure out the best spot in your house to set up a "mini greenhouse."

Materials to gather: seeds (packets of garden seeds and seeds in your kitchen such as beans), potting soil (from a garden center, hardware store or grocery store), recycled plastic containers of different sizes (small yogurt containers, shallow plastic lids from takeout to catch water when placed underneath and create a "greenhouse" if clear plastic and placed over containers....

The mother-daughter team of Ehris Jancz-Urban and Velya Urban from the Grounded Goodwife company in Connecticut will return this evening to give an informative and enjoyable talk about the right herbal "superstars" to nurture in a home herb garden for good health and wellness.  These "superstar" herbs can treat common ailments like colds and flu, inflammation, minor cuts, infections, pain, muscle spasms, anxiety, poor digestion, and insomnia.  But where do you begin?  How can I even start a medicinal herb garden, you are saying to yourself....It's the question many people ask, normally out of fear of getting it wrong, or growing something that could poison their family.  Starting your herb garden isn't as overwhelming as you may think - and spending time in a medicinal herb garden is healing by its very existence!

Ehris and Velya bring a lot of enthusiasm and positive emotion to their presentations, and we know you will enjoy this one!  The Grounded Goodwife consists of a zany teacher and a grounded green herbalist who have joined forces to create a wonderful connection with audiences as they discuss entertaining historical topics and herbs to help treat health concerns.  Their delivery is funny and frank, and for more info. about them go to their website: https://groundedgoodwife.com

Advance registration is required to attend and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.  This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

In memory of the Library's former trustee Herb Voigt, please join us this evening via Zoom for a conversation with Steven Lipsitt.  Maestro Lipsitt is the Founding Director of the Bach, Betthoven & Brahams Society of Boston.  He will speak about his position and will answer questions about his role and classical music.

When you attend a concert or other musical event, do you wonder about the instrumentalists on stage or in the pit?  Who wrote the music and what were their expectations, why those particular instruments, what did the players do to earn that spot, how do they maintain their skills, and when is it OK to clap?  This speaker will explore the rich fabric of classical music performance as he focuses on the topic: "Rhythm and Emotions."  Some questions he may ponder are how do master composers use rhythmic figuration to create atmosphere and evoke a mood or feeling in the listener.  And what psychological or theatrical role do repetition and form play in the persuasiveness of a musical composition?

Maestro Lipsitt has conducted orchestras in Russia, Greece, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Canada, and the U.S.  He has been a guest conductor at Scottish Opera, the Kennedy Center Opera House, Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Pops, and Boston Ballet, and has served as cover conductor for the symphony orchestras of St. Louis, Toronto, and Boston.  He has trained young musicians at Tanglewood, New England Conservatory, Boston University, the Hart School of Music, and the Boston Conservatory Opera Theatre.  Steven has collaborated with Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Odetta, Bobby McFerrin, the Empire Brass Quintet, and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

We hope you will join us!   Advance registration is required and you can sign up here.  Once registered, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the event so that you can participate.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Now more than ever we need a good laugh, and this interactive hour does just that!  Bring your jokes, funny stories, and creativity to this presentation using humor to have fun, reduce anxiety, and press your emotional reset button.  Laughter will reduce your stress, improve your outlook, and lead to better quality of life.  As a college professor and professional stand-up comedian, Dave Rattigan has been making people laugh for nearly three decades, in the classroom and on Sirius Satellite radio as well as live comedy clubs.  He's also worked in less traditional venues like hospitals, libraries, a parking lot, warehouses, business lobbies, gazebos and lots of places he'd like to forget!  He has used humor to diffuse tense situations and deal better with stress.  Dave uses his stand-up material to lighten the mood, reviews the benefits of a good laugh, and then leads the group through simple improv, funny stories, shared jokes, and other exercises to create an always-fun comedy experience.

Dave Rattigan is a professional standup comedian whose CD has played on Sirius Satellite and other radio networks.  He's also appeared on NESN and the syndicated Steve Katsos Show, and performed live at top clubs in New England and as far away as Kilkenny, Ireland.  By day he's a writer and professor at UMass-Lowell and Northeastern Community College, where he uses laughter to promote learning by keeping his students relaxed and engaged.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Advance registration is required and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be sent to you on the day of the program.  Please join us for a fun evening!   (And please note that the language used in this presentation will be clean, without profanity.)

New Zealand is home to many rare birds and marine mammals including the comical yellow-eyed penguin. Watch and listen as the yellow-eyed penguin returns from the ocean to feed its chick and the Antipodes Island parrot demonstrates “looks, personality and talent.” Not to be outdone, rare New Zealand sea lions make quite an impression as they interact on isolated South Island beaches, pods of rare Hector’s dolphins frolic near coastal shores and dusky dolphins play with kayakers as they travel deep into the fiords of southern New Zealand. During a challenging time when most people are limiting their travel, this talk takes folks along on a rollicking ride around New England - all in just one hour, and all from the comfort of their own home!

Author of 3 books about New England and longtime "Chronicle" reporter Ted Reinstein is your tour guide as you go from Maine to Rhode Island, Mt. Washington to Mt. Mansfield, and Berkshire foliage to Fenway Park.  But Ted's 20-plus years of reporting and telling stories from all over New England means this is not your average bus tour.  Prepare to meet colorful characters who've down the darndest things, learn odd facts about familiar places, and of course - this being a Ted talk - expect to visit at least a few fabulous classic diners.  (Spoiler alert: Ted reveals where to find THE best clam chowdah in America - and it's right here in New England!)  Ted will take questions following the talk.

Get Moving with Marv!

Marvelous Marvin’s Brain Circus (Virtual Style)” begins with a rhyming overture about brain health and its links with exercise and reading.  This rhyming overture will include a collection of magic tricks and circus arts skills.  These circus arts skills will be demonstrated online as part of the show.  Prior to the show, you will have the opportunity to acquire these circus arts toys for participation after the show.  Then you can play along after the show.  We will learn to juggle, balance sticks and peacock feathers, spin plates and flip-and-flyers, enjoy hula hoops, master the rhythm sticks and walk on romper stompers. Runs 1 hour.

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  A program of Milton Moves: a year-long initiative of the Milton Public Library for all ages focused on fitness, wellness, and healthy eating.  This program is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

For all ages. Registration is required. This program will be offered via Zoom. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

C.A.L.M. : Crafting and Learning Mindfulness for Kids is a new Mindful Arts & Creation program that helps kids cultivate emotional awareness while engaging in a calming activity. While our hands are busy creating, we'll listen to a story about slowing down, and then practice centering ourselves with mindful child-friendly activities and breathing.

We will be doodling with watercolors and markers today! Art doodling is about the process not the result, and it is very soothing.   Supplies needed: watercolor, cup of water, brush,
markers ( your favorite).

Registration is required to participate in this online program.

Zoom link will be provided 15 minutes prior to program.  If there is a cancellation, please let us know.

Please join the Milton Cemetery and the Milton Public Library for a walking tour of the Cemetery! We will focus on the lives of "permanent residents" who now call the Cemetery home.

We will meet in the parking lot of the Library, and walk from there to the Cemetery - then return to the Library post-tour. Needed to participate: a mask, walking shoes and an adventurous spirit. Registration is required and will open three weeks before the program.

A program of Milton Moves: a year-long initiative of the Milton Public Library for all ages focused on fitness, wellness, and healthy eating.
