misc_none Wotiz Gallery: The Faces of the Rasin Foundation, Haiti     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of February, the Milton Public Library is pleased to celebrate Black History Month in the Wotiz Gallery by hosting an exhibit of photography by local artist Cheryl Clegg called “Faces of the Rasin Foundation, Haiti.”  The Milton-based non-profit Rasin Foundation’s mission is to improve the health of the poorest citizens of rural Haiti.  In January 2013, Ms. Clegg travelled for the first time with the doctors of The Rasin Foundation to their clinic in Le Petite Riviere, a village just outside of Leogane.  Walking through the sugar cane field to the clinic the first day, she did not know what to expect.  All she could see were lines of people forming outside the clinic door waiting for basic healthcare.  They were dressed in their Sunday best: hats, dress shoes, dresses and suits.  They were infants, children, parents, grandparents and great grandparents.  They were all there to see the volunteer doctors of The Rasin Foundation“The Faces of The Rasin Foundation” is an ongoing series of portraits of the residents of Le Petite Riviere, who are now able to receive medical care because of the work of the organization.  To learn more about The Rasin Foundation, go to: www.rasinfoundation.org   There will be a free and open reception for this display on Monday evening, February 26 from 6-8 PM in the Gallery so please come and meet the photographer and view her work.

Photographer Cheryl Clegg is a Waltham, Massachusetts–based artist whose interest in photography started at a young age with a Kodak Instamatic in hand.  She attended Rochester Institute of Technology, receiving a BFA in advertising photography and has maintained a commercial studio for close to three decades.  Cheryl’s clients have included household names and her work has appeared on billboards, magazines, book covers and annual reports.  Every day behind the camera is a good day.  Be it commissioned work or a personal project, achieving emotion in a photograph is what it is all about for her.  She spends her free time with her husband, Brian, and their 5 children.

Please come and enjoy this heartfelt and timely display which will remain in place from February lst through the 28th.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  4:00 PM Shakespeare Sundays - The Merchant of Venice     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Connie Spiros     cdspiros@comcast.net

David Smith returns to the Milton Public Library with his very popular "Shakespeare Sundays."  One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the often very different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.  In a series of two sessions this winter, participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in the chosen play and will then view excerpts from the films.  Further discussion will focus on how the directors have brought their special vision to the material.  Participants should read the play in advance and to order a copy of the play, you can search the online catalog here on the website (www.miltonlibrary.org) or call the Library's Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 for a reserve.

"The Merchant of Venice"  will be discussed on February 25th.

Please sign up here to attend this fun and educational program.

Discussion leader: David Smith was a secondary school English teacher for 50 years, the last 34 of which were at Milton Academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non-Fiction Writing.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its first session on Monday, February 26 from 6:30-7:30pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for February 26 is The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, by Deb Perelman, published in 2012.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting night!

Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open four weeks in advance of our club meeting. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

Wildlife photographer Peter Christoph returns to the Library with a talk called "Birds of the Quabbin" this evening in a one-hour presentation.  Treat yourself to an unforgettable narrated slideshow as Mr. Christoph shares his experiences looking for wildlife, by land and by boat, at the beautiful and pristine Quabbin Reservoir.  A rich diversity of birds call the Quabbin their home, the main attraction being the common loon and bald eagle families that nest here.  Several winters ago, Peter built a rustic cabin along a river in an area known as the North Quabbin Woods.  It was from this base camp that he discovered the "Magic of the Quabbin" and became intimately familiar with its intricate network of channels, coves and islands.  You'll also learn about the creation of the Quabbin Reservoir, including a glimpse into the lost towns which gave way to this unlikely wilderness area.  Please join us for a fascinating hour learning more about Massachusetts nature and wildlife.

Join Library Director, Will Adamczyk, as he moderates his Eclectic Book Club.  Each quarter we'll read and discuss a work of contemporary fiction, with a focus on titles that we might not necessarily have chosen ourselves....possibly controversial, possibly newsworthy, but definitely discussion worthy!  The book to be read in advance is The Attack by Yasmina Khadra (c2004).

From the bestselling author of The Swallows of Kabul comes this timely and haunting novel that powerfully illuminates the devastating human costs of terrorism.Dr. Amin Jaafari is an Arab-Israeli surgeon at a hospital in Tel Aviv. As an admired and respected member of his community, he has carved a space for himself and his wife, Sihem, at the crossroads of two troubled societies. Jaafari’s world is abruptly shattered when Sihem is killed in a suicide bombing. As evidence mounts that Sihem could have been responsible for the catastrophic bombing, Jaafari begins a tortured search for answers. Faced with the ultimate betrayal, he must find a way to reconcile his cherished memories of his wife with the growing realization that she may have had another life, one that was entirely removed from the comfortable, modern existence that they shared.

* SPLIT is a 30-minute film for kids of divorce and their parents. It features twelve children, ages 6-12, and provides the children's perspective on divorce... no adults, no experts… just kids speaking the powerful truth of what is on their minds and in their hearts. Their wisdom, candor, and humor will give courage to other children, and encourage parents to make better choices as they move through divorce.

misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Paintings by Artist David Dauer     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

There will be an exhibit during the month of April in the Wotiz Gallery of paintings by local artist David Dauer.  In early 2016, after over 30 years in the publishing and advertising fields as a designer, art director and creative head, Mr. Dauer decided to go back to his first love: fine arts.  He started drawing at an early age and that led him to numerous years of discovery and education.  He has a BFA from UMass Dartmouth and an MFA from Kent State University in Painting, with extensive study in Printmaking, Photography and Art History, with continued studies in Design at Umass Dartmouth which led him to his 30-plus year career in the publishing industry.  He has shown work in many locations in the Northeast and Ohio, most recently at Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford, Sotheby’s in Jamaica Plain and The Wall Gallery in Norwood. David is part of the Switch Co-op Gallery in Hyde Park and is a member of both the Milton Art Center and Hyde Park Art Association. He is also part of the TECM Artist's Collaborative, a private group of artist professions. More information may be found on his website at dbdauerstudio.com or his Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages under dbdauerstudio The work to be seen in this display are acrylic paintings and small water based marker drawings. The work emanates from current world events and religious readings through a surrealistic model.  Dauer's paintings utilize vibrant color, texture, and overlays of color washes.  Please come and view this lovely display during the month of April.  There will be a free and open reception also in the Gallery for this exhibit on April 5th from 6-8 PM.

Tonight we will show a very enjoyable romantic comedy called "Paris Can Wait" directed by Eleanor Coppola (2017).  It stars Diane Lane, Alec Baldwin and Arnaud Viard.  This is the story: Anne is at a crossroads in her life. She is married to a successful but inattentive movie producer named Michael, and is starved for attention as an underappreciated empty-nester wife.  He treats her more like a personal assistant, relying on her to keep track of his socks, pills and inseam length, rather than making her own happiness a priority.  Here, an earache keeps her grounded, but Michael's colleague Jacques generously offers to be her chauffeur to Paris.  So she unexpectedly finds herself taking a car trip from Cannes to Paris with him, but the first matter of business isn't beating the traffic but enjoying a lunch of proscuitto and ripe melon with abundant glasses of vino.  Her eyes also widen when he asks for her credit card, so he can make a hotel reservation for the night.   So what should be a seven-hour drive turns into a carefree two-day adventure replete with diversions involving picturesque sights, fine food and wine, humor, wisdom and romance, reawakening Anne's senses and giving her a new lust for life.  The movie is 92 minutes long and is rated PG for "thematic elements, smoking and some language."  Lots of fun!  Please come.  This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be an hour-long book discussion with Library Director Will Adamczyk this evening about the title, Paul Revere's Ride by David Hackett Fischer.  This book is constructed around two thematic lines: one story centers on the American patriot Paul Revere; the other, on British General Thomas Gage.  Here are the contents: Paul Revere's America -- General Gage's dilemma -- First strokes -- Mounting tensions -- The mission -- the warning -- The march -- The capture -- The alarm -- The muster -- The great fear -- The rescue -- The first shot -- The battle -- A circle of fire -- Aftermath.  You can reserve your copy of the book either by going to our website - www.miltonlibrary.org - or by calling the Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 and ask staff to help.  Please join Will for a fascinating discussion about a good non-fiction read.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

From filmmaker Christopher Nolan comes the epic action thriller "Dunkirk," starring Fionn Whitehead, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy )c2017),  You do not want to miss this inspiring story which unfolds on land, sea and air, as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk with enemy troops closing in.  RAF Spitfires engage the enemy in the skies above the Channel, trying to protect the defenseless men below.  Meanwhile, hundreds of small boats manned by both military officers and civilians are mounting a desperate rescue effort, risking their lives in a race against time to save even a fraction of their army.   This is a free screening and the film is rated PG-13 for "intense war experience and some language."  The running time is 106 minutes and this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.  Please join us for a movie you will not forget!

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

Tonight we are offering a free film screening of what one reviewer called "One of the best films of the year!" "The Glass Castle" tells an inspiring true story about Jeannette (Oscar winner Brie Larson) who had a poor but wildly adventurous childhood, raised by her free-spirited father (Woody Harrleson) and her mother (Naomi Watts), an eccentric artist.  This all-star cast shines in the movie based on The New York Times best-selling memoir.  When Jeannette's father's behavior becomes erratic, she and her siblings must find the courage to live on their own terms in this uplifting story of unconditional love.  It is rated PG-13 for "mature thematic content, involving family dysfunction, for some language and smoking" and the running time is 127 minutes.  This program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Eclectic Book Chat with Will: American War by Akkad     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

There will be a hour-long book discussion this evening with Library Director Will Adamczyk to explore the title: American War by El Akkad.  Each quarter we'll read a work of contemporary fiction that we might not otherwise have chosen for ourselves -- possibly controversial, possibly newsworthy -- but definitely discussion worthy!  This is an audacious and powerful debut novel: a second American Civil War, a devastating plague, and one family caught deep in the middle -- a story that asks what might happen if America were to turn its most devastating policies and deadly weapons upon itself.  Sarat Chestnut, born in Louisiana, is only 6 years old when the Second American Civil War breaks out in 2074.  But even she knows that oil is outlawed, that Louisiana is half underwater, and that unmanned drones fill the sky.  And when her father is killed and her family is forced into camp Patience for displaced persons, she quickly begins to be shaped by her particular time and place until, finally, through the influence of a mysterious functionary, she is turned into a deadly instrument of war.  Telling her story is her nephew, Benjamin Chestnut, born during war -- part of the Miraculous Generation -- now an old man confronting the dark secret of his past, his family's role in the conflict and, in particular, that of his aunt, a woman who saved his life while destroying untold others.    You may reserve a copy of the book either by going to our website which is www.miltonlibrary.org or by calling the Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x. 3 for staff help to place a reserve.  Please join Will for a fascinating discussion!   This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.
