misc_none.png Wotiz Gallery: Not Your Grandma's Quilt Show by Artist Barbara Graceffa Download Event Info Download Event Info Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 898-4964   jhlady@ocln.org

From 9/1 to 10/31, there will be a lovely exhibit of quilts shown in the Wotiz Gallery of the Milton Public Library in a display called “Not Your Grandma’s Quilt Show.”  As a teacher, artist and quilter, Barbara Graceffa is self-taught and has received several awards for her work, including “Best in Show – Blue Ribbon Quilt” at the Marshfield Fair.  She is a teacher at the New England Quilt Museum located in Lowell, MA, and also teaches many different classes about design, decluttering, home staging, and more, including having presented some virtual talks at our library.  This month’s gallery collection will show 20 or so traditional and contemporary quilts and wall hangings which Barbara started exhibiting in 2018.  Her pieced and applique wall quilts are simple in design, but they are unique in that her choice of fabrics and how she pairs them, transforms them, and sometimes embellishes them makes her work stand out from other quilters’ art.   In her first juried show, her art quilt “Out on a Limb” was chosen by The Brush Gallery to appear in its annual art quilt exhibition.  This upcoming Wotiz exhibit is her fourth solo display in the past 6 years, and she is a member of 4 quilt guilds from Abington to Arlington.    She is also a talented columnist for the Quincy Sun and works with clients as an interior decorator.  The artist is currenlty working on her first book, If Picasso was a Quilter: Designing Outside the Block" in which she will share photos and instructions of the many different methods she uses in her quilts.

Ms. Graceffa’s quilting journey started down a well-travelled path 40 years ago but diverged “somewhere ages and ages hence.”  Trading traditional patchwork bed coverings for artistic wall quilts, she now looks at design, creativity, technique, color, fabric and embellishment through a different lens, and as Robert Frost says in his poem “The Road Not Taken?” “…and that has made all the difference.”  There will also be a free and open reception held on  Wednesday, 9/14/22, from 6-8 PM in the Gallery, so that you may come meet the artist in person and view her lovely collection of art quilts.  For more information about this event, please Email jhlady@ocln.org  or call the Reference Dept.

You can learn more about this artist by going to her website which is: sec-interior.com

Tonight famed extreme skiier, author, film producer and Milton resident Dan Egan will give an in person presentation based on his book called 30 Years in a White Haze which was written with co-author Eric Wilbur (c2021).  Mr. Egan is a pioneer of extreme sports, world-renowned for his big mountain skiing on the international stage.  He has appeared in more than a dozen Warren Miller ski films and is known for traveling to the most remote regions of the world to ski and chronicle the geopolitical landscape of the late 80s and 90s.  In 2001, Powder Magazine named Dan Egan one of the most influential skiers of our time.  He was inducted into the U.S. Skiing & Snowboarding Hall of Fame in 2017.  This author is also an award-winning film producer and has been nominated for three New England Emmy Awards and won three NASJA Harold Hirsch Awards for excellence in journalism.  The book he will be talking about this evening is Dan's story of worldwide adventure and the evolution of extreme Skiing.  Eric Wilbur, his co-author, is a journalist who has been covering the New England sports, travel, and skiing scenes for nearly three decades.  His written work has appeared in the Boston Globe, New Englland Ski Journal, Boston.com, Boston Metro, and various other publications.  If you love the sport, please join us in the Keys Room this evening for a fascinating talk!

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Wednesday, October 12 from 6:30-8pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for October is Treasures of the Mexican Table by Pati Jinich.

In order to participate, please take these simple steps:

  • Please register through the library events calendar. Only registered cooks will be able to attend.
  • Borrow a copy of the book from the library and choose a dish. Books are available at the Circulation Desk one month ahead. (If you borrow a cookbook but won't be able to attend the meeting, please return the cookbook so someone else can check it out. Thank you!)
  • Once you've chosen your recipe, contact Sara by email (struog@ocln.org) or phone (617-898-4951) to let her know what recipe you’ll be trying so we don't have a lot of duplication in the dishes we'll sample on meeting day!

This will be a hybrid program: in-person participants will be in the Keys Room, sharing food in a socially distanced format; and virtual participants may watch and speak, but will not be able to try dishes. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will open on Wednesday, September 21. Once you register you will receive more details about the club.  Bon Appetit!

This ongoing program will be a one-hour in person gentle vinyasa flow Yoga class with instructor Marianne Zullas.  It is designed to create movement and space in the body.  Students will practice breathing techniques, asanas (yoga poses), and will also be introduced to exercises that will open some of the meridian pathways in the body to create a better flow of energy.  This class ends with a relaxing guided meditation.  The program is appropriate for ages 13 and up, and some knowledge of yoga is recommended, but not required.  Space is limited for this enjoyable event.  Each student must bring with them a a yoga mat, a blanket, and a water bottle.   Masks are optional - it is your choice to make.  One last Fall class will be offered on Saturday, November 12th, and students may attend one or all programs in this series, but they do need to sign up individually for each one here at our events list when registration is open.  These programs are not cumulative and there is no virtual option for them.

Marianne Zullas is a Yoga teacher and a Reiki practitioner.  The mind/body connection has been a passion of hers since childhood.  Her goal is to offer her students the opportunity to dissociate from constant thinking in order to be in the present moment.  Marianne lives in Milton with her husband and two daughters.  We hope you might join her for a relaxing and informative hour!

Advance registration is required here and for questions, contact Jean Hlady, Head of Adult Services/Reference, at jbhlady@ocln.org or call (617) 898-4964.  This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is part of our initiative called "Milton Moves" which promotes wellness, fitness, and healthy eating.

Come join film historian Frank Mandosa on a Saturday afternoon as he shows us the fascinating history of horror films on the big screen in the Keys Community Room - just in time for All Hallows Eve..  You will view all kinds of spooky and outrageous bits from great scary films through the ages!

Even if you have never been a fan of horror movies, this funny, entertaining look at snippets of some brilliant films produced by American cinema shown on our big screen  - plus lots of interesting trivia and facts about them you can learn - will send some thrills your way!  Hopefully this program - of scenes from some of the best movies of the genre - might entice you to then maybe watch a spine-chilling film all the way through!  Mr. Mandosa is a very entertaining speaker and knows tons of movie info. to share

Registration is not required to attend this movie program - just come and join host Jean Hlady to watch some fun film footage and hear interesting tales about cinema from Mr. Mandosa!  (They hope you are working on your costume too for 10/31...!)

The talented Singer Gordon Michaels' powerful baritone voice, effortless delivery, and diverse stylistic range is perfectly suited to the classics recorded by Nat King Cole.  This afternoon he will perform in a program called:  "Unforgettable - A Tribute to Nat King Cole" at 2 PM in our Keys Community Room.  Some of the tunes presented include "Unforgettable," "Route 66," Autumn Leaves," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "When I Fall in Love," and more!

Don't miss this dynamic performer who has graced the stage with Patti Labelle, Jennifer Holiday, James Taylor, Rod Stewart, Cissy Houston, Keith Lockhart, and Tramaine Hawkins.  This is Mr. Michaels' first written and produced one-man show and his longest running - for 25 years now.  This show is extremely popular and performed the most.  It just sold out in Boston August 19, 2022 at Club Cafe's Napoleon Room.   This vocalist is comfortable singing Broadway ballads, jazz standards and gospel, and seeing him is a real treat for those lucky enough to enjoy one of his performances.  He is a gregarious southern gentleman at heart and truly an entertainer that will leave you wanting more (although now he lives in the Boston area).  Gordon's talents have also garnered numerous awards including lst place in the 2000 Encore Silver Note Sing Off as well as lst place in the 1996 Searching for the Stars competition.  He has been nominated twice for best male vocalist for jazz & gospel by the Boston Music Awards, and is the recent 2009 Boston Winner of the David Foster singing contest.  For more info. about this performer, go to: gordonmichaels.com

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  We hope you will join host Jean Hlady for a very enjoyable afternoon at the library!

Please note that you no longer need to sign up in advance to attend these concerts - just come visit us in person to enjoy some music!

Acclaimed Native American Activist (Arawak) Claudia Fox Tree will give a Zoom talk this evening called "Decolonizing Contributions by Indigenous People."  This will be a virtual presentation which will help us all connect the dots from the past to the present, and into the future, to learn how indigenous inventions and contributions are part of completing the story of what is now known as the United States.  Examine what is known about Indigenous inventions and contributions, and consider the relevancy of this information in your own practice as a parent, educator and/or community member.  This will be a unique and educational experience not to be missed!

The speaker is a professional educator and social justice activist with a Masters in Education.  She facilitates courses and workshops on having difficult conversations about diversity and anti-racism.  In decolonizing equlity conversations, she centers present indigenous experiences and inclusive history in what is now kjnow as North and South America.  her presentations center on marginalized Native American identities and missing contributions while dismantling stereotypes and historical inaccuracies.  She asks allies and co-conspirators to come on the journey with her.  Claudia is a full-time public school teacher in the special education field, and is currently a doctoral student at Lesley University.

More details will follow here soon.

Advance registration is required to attend virtually - please sign up here and a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.

Pop-Up Art School will be teaching another fun and free in person adult art class called:  "Winter Watercolor Painting" workshop.  No experience is required and all materials will be supplied.   Art instructor Lisa Walker will teach us four watercolor techniques including negative space painting.  The negative space is around the subject.  You'll draw the outline of the design using one of the templates provided (or make your own design).  The next step is to paint around the shape using a few layers of paint, and salt to add texture.  It's a different way to think about painting and it's a fun way to create a complex image using the translucent qualities of watercolor paint.  Each participant will be able to choose from a few different images including a peace dove, an angel, and a house in winter.  We hope you might join us to bring home a lovely art piece to enjoy all season!

Advance registration is required here as space is limited and we will be checking in registrants at the door before the class.  For questions, Email jhlady@ocln.org

This program is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Participants will be guided through the creative visualization meditation where Amy will show them how to visualize on all levels what it will feel like to have already achieved what they are hoping for, and most importantly to feel good!  At the end will be a question and answer period, and it is recommended that you have a journal handy to write down any insights that may come up as you go through this process with us.

Advance registration is required to participate in this workshop, and once signed up, a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program.

This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library, and is free and open to all, and we hope you might join us in this helpful and caring event!

Calling all Cooks!  The Milton Public Library Cookbook Club, led by local chef Connie Spiros and Assistant Director Sara Truog, invites you to its next session on Wednesday, December 7 from 6:30-8pm.  Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share.  The cookbook chosen for December is TBA.

Registration will open on Wednesday, November 16.

Additional classes will be offered on Saturdays: October 29th and November 12th, and students may attend one or all, but they do need to sign up individually for each one here at our events list when registration is open.

Local Irish historian, music and dance teacher Sean Murphy will give an online presentation about the historical significance of Saint Patrick to help us all celebrate March 17th and the proud heritage of Ireland.  This zoom program explores the reasons for his mission in Ireland in the context of the rise of Christianity within the declining Roman Empire, and the impact of the huge migration of peoples from the Germanic regions of Europe into Western Europe.  Sean will outline St. Patrick's achivements for the Irish people, and the role that Irish missionaries had on the growth of Christianity in the country.

Mr. Murphy teaches through the Irish Cultural Center of New England in Canton, at Cape Cod Sons of Erin, at Cape Cod Cultural Center, at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, and at venues on Nantucket.  He received several awards for his work as a supporter of the culture and heritage of Ireland.  He also leads a traditional Irish music session in O'Shea's Old Inne in West Dennis.  Sean was born and lived as a child in Dublin, and moved to Cape Cod in 2005.  He also plays and teaches the tin whistle.

This program is proudly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free to the public.  Advance registration is required here; a Zoom connection link will be Emailed to you on the day of the program once you're signed up.  Please join us!

Author Alison O'Leary will give an in person program called "Hikes Through History" this evening in the Keys Community Room. This talk is about the history of the parks where we hike and recreate around Boston, along with hiking trail recommendations, tips, and inside info.  Have you ever wandered through the woods and wondered who had been there before you?  In Massachusetts, many parks and trails have been carved out of historical sites.

Ms. O'Leary, an award-winning journalist and co-author of the Appalachian Mountain Club's guide called Best Day Hikes Near Boston, will share her favorites through this hour-long program.  Using maps and historic photos, she describes several day trip destinations with historical significance and interesting features in Massachusetts.  Special effort is made to include varying levels of difficulty (flat and easy to steep and challenging) and to include a variety of scenery.  These sites include: a former rubber factory overlooked in the woods; contributions of the Roosevelt-era Civilian Conservation Corps (CC) to our favorite parks; offbeat tales of local residents; sites of former grand estates (and tales of the owners), and much more!  Signed copies of the book will be available after the program.

Best Day Hikes Near Boston (AMC Press, c2017) is the second hiking/travel book Alison has published; her first was Inns & Adventures: A History and Exploer's Guide to New Hampshire, Vermont, and the Berkshires, co-authored with Michael Tougias (OnCape Publishing, c2015).  Their other co-authored non-fiction books include:  Abandon Ship! (Hachette, c2023), Attacked at Sea (Macmillan, c2020), and So Close To Home: The True Stury of an American Family's Fight for Survival in WWII.  In 2017 she won the Silver Charlie Award from the Florida Magazine Association for history writing.  For more information, her website is: www.alisonoleary.com.

This event is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.  Details about registration will follow here before the program.
