misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Photographer Ronald Wilson     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Plymouth photographer Ronald Wilson will display his work in the Wotiz Gallery this month.  His exhibit is called: "Return to Ireland."  Travel with him as he explores the west coast of Ireland from a gorse filled valley in Glen Columbkille in County Donegal to a pine island in Derryclare Lough in Connemara and a coral beach in Carraroe on County Galway.  Mr. Wilson produced exhibition quality prints in his darkroom for nearly 30 years, and now his images are digitally printed on Fuji Crystal Archive material.  The close contact with nature that he experiences through photography has made him intimately aware of the expressive potential of the landscape and it is those qualities that reveal something essential about the subject that he seeks to convey in his photography.  Through the creative use of the elements of line and texture, color and shape, he hopes to absorb the viewer in the aesthetic qualities found in a palette of lichen clinging to a granite boulder, pond lilly pads floating in the still reflection of fall foliage, or a windblown ridge of a sand dune etched sharply against a cloudless blue sky. The artist has shown his work since 2004 all over Massachusetts and New England, and can be reached at his 6 Main Street Extension Studio, Plymouth, MA (508) 732-0170 or you may view his website:  www.rwilsonphoto.com    There will also be an open reception on Thursday, October 16th from 6-8 PM in the gallery.  Please come and enjoy this beautiful display during October.

Author and historian Anthony Sammarco talks about his new book entitled Lost Boston.  His new work is a nostalgic journey back in time to visit some of the disappeared Boston buildings and places in all their grandeur, before the wrecking ball and decline set in.  From the 1870s up to the present day, 68 different losses are represented here, including schools, churches, theaters, grand mansions, dockyards, racetracks, parks, stores, hotels, offices, and factories. Organized chronologically starting with the earliest losses and ending with the latest, the book features much-loved institutions that failed to stand the test of time, along with old-fashioned hotels and sports facilities that were beyond updating or refurbishment.  A book signing will follow.  Please join us for this stimulating discussion and program, which is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Public Library.  For more information, contact the Reference Department.

Celebrate Teen Read Week 2014 with the teen department after school! This year's theme is Turn Dreams into Reality and on that note, the teen librarian Amy Rosa will have an ongoing suggestion list that whole week to request books, graphic novels, manga, magazines or video games to order for the teen room. The top five requested items will be ordered by Miss Amy for the collection and the requestees will be honored with a thank you note somewhere inside the item. So teens... ready... set... request!

Also ongoing this week after school, show off your poetry skills and put together a display of Spine Label Poetry in the teen room. Spine Label Poetry is when you use the titles of books to put together a poem by stacking the books one on top of another to create lines in the poem. Displays will be showcased this week in the teen room with a placecard with the writer's name and title of their poem. People are also encouraged to vote on their favorites and the winning display will be photographed and put up on the library's website and blog.

Teen Read Week is open to any teens in grades 6 to 12 and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Please contact Amy Rosa, Teen Librarian, at (617) 698-5757 or aboivin@ocln.org with questions or comments.

    Contact: Robin Tagliaferri   617-696-1815   r.tagliaferri@forbeshousemuseum.org

Noted Abraham Lincoln scholar and author, Rhode Island Chief Justice (retired), Frank J. Williams, will present the lecture, "Lincoln's Melancholia," on Sunday October 19 @ 2pm.

Lincoln's melancholy has been the subject of much research and speculation. Lincoln was known to have suffered from clinical depression, having written about suicide as a young man and experienced breakdowns on a number of occasions.

"Abraham Lincoln fought clinical depression all his life," writes Joshua Wolf Shenk in his article, 'Lincoln's Great Depression' (The Atlantic, October 2005), "and if he were alive today, his condition would be treated as a 'character issue'- that is, a political liability. His condition was indeed a character issue as it gave him the tools to save the nation."

The exhibit, Mary Bowditch Forbes and the FHM Lincoln Collection, features 27 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and documents highlighting aspects of the American Civil War and the building of the FHM Lincoln Cabin. The artworks and memorabilia are drawn from the permanent collection of the Forbes House Museum, acquired over a fifty year period by Mary Bowditch Forbes. The exhibit is on view through January 2015.

For more information on programs, exhibits, events and group tours of the Forbes House Museum contact the office at 617.696.1815 or visit the website, www.forbeshousemuseum.org.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Wendy Johnston will give a talk on her hike of the Pacific Crest Trail which runs 2,700 miles from the US/Mexican border to the Canadian border through California, Oregon, and Washington (the same trail that Cheryl Strayed wrote about in her book Wild).  She also hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 2009.  Her talk centers around the lessons she learned on her long hikes, and she hopes to inspire people to step outside their comfort zones and go after what makes them come alive.  Wendy feels that the trail is a very controlled environment in which so much of the external stimuli that we are constantly surrounded by is eliminated.  When stripped of many of the demands placed upon us, we are able to focus more internally, listen to ourselves more closely, and receive lessons that take much longer to learn in the busy world that we live in.  Please come join us for a fascinating discussion.  This program is sponsored by The Friends of the Milton Public Library and for more information, contact the Reference Department.

There will be a talk this evening by Professor Elaine Craighead on the topic of mysteries.  Auguste Dupin, the amateur sleuth, who appears in Poe's 1841 short story, 'The Murder in the Rue Morgue," is the prototype for Holmes, Poirot, and other great fictional detectives.  In fact, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle called Dupin "a model for all time."  Poe not only created a model in Dupin, but also in the genre itself.  Elaine Craighead regularly teaches the stories of Poe and Doyle and is currently a tenured Associate Professor of Humanities at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.   If you would like to read the short story beforehand, go to this link: Poestories.com.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be a free showing of the film "Her."  It is about Theodore, a lonely man in the final stages of his divorce.  When he's not working as a letter writer, his down time is spent playing video games and occasionally hanging out with friends.  He decides to purchase the new OS1, which is advertised as the world's first artifically intelligent operating system.  Theodore quickly finds himself drawn in with Samantha, the voice behind his OS1.  As they start spending time together, they grow closer and eventually find themselves in love.  Having fallen in love with his OS, Theodore finds himself dealing with feelings of both great joy and doubt.  As an OS, Samantha has powerful intelligence that she uses to help him in ways others hadn't, but how does she help him deal with his inner conflict of being in love with an OS?  This film's depiction of love is profound and moving, and shows us that love can happen in strange ways, not always when we're looking for it, and that is can change us deeply if we can be open to it.  At the 86th Academy Awards, the film was nominated in five categories including Best Picture with Director Spike Jonze winning for Best Original Screenplay.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and it will start promptly at 6:30 PM.  It is rated R for language, sexual content, and brief graphic nudity.  It is not suitable for children.  For more information, contact the Reference Department.
