misc_none Wotiz Gallery Display for December: The Paintings of Polly Wakefield     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Throughout December, Polly Wakefield's watercolors will be on display in the Wotiz Gallery.  The collection reflects the work done over dozens of years, right up until Polly's death in 2004, while studying with esteemed painter Nancy Sargent Howell.  Polly's works reflect Howell's method of allowing students to "borrow" heavily from her work and others, "in order to learn how (the artist) mixed colors, used brush strokes, and developed their compositions," enabling students to become comfortable making "strokes that are uniquely their own."  The exhibit will include some of Howell's work to help illustrate the method and "teacher-pupil" connection.  Join us for an opening reception at the library on Tuesday, December 2nd from 6-8 PM.  Gift sets of cards made of some of Polly's paintings will be available fro purchase.  For more information call the Wakefield Estate at (617) 333-0924.  The Wakefield Estate is located at 1465 Brush Hill Road, Milton.  For information about displaying your art at the library, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian.

There will be a free showing of the film "Monuments Men" this evening.  Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, this movie centers around an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.  In a seemingly impossible mission, the Monuments Men, as they were called, find themselves risking their lives in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1,000 years of culture.  It stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Cate Blanchett, and is rated PG-13 for some images of war violence and historical smoking.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Join the teen department and teen librarian's husband Jon Rosa in a Magic Draft card game. Jon Rosa will be moderating this event to ensure that current rules of the game are followed by all players. He has also agreed to play the winning player in the final match! Come check it out! This program is open to teens in grades 6 to 12. Registration is required. All players must currently own a deck to compete with and must be mostly up-to-date on the rules of the game. Admission is free. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

What is Magic: The Gathering? Magic is a tradable card game (TCG) where you build your collection of cards by trading with your friends, assembling decks of cards, and battling against an opponent and their deck. You cast powerful spells and summon monstrous creatures aiming to knock your opponent down from 20 life to zero. The game is constantly changing as new cards are released throughout the year. As you get new cards, whether from these new sets or through trading with your friends, you can continuously update your decks and discover a whole new game!

In honor of Black History month, there will be a free screening of the film, "Fruitvale Station" starting promptly at 6:30 PM.  This is a 2013 American drama film written and directed by Ryan Coogler and it is his first feature-length movie.  It is based on the events leading to the death of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old young man from Hayward, CA and his experiences on the last day of his life, before he was fatally shot by BART police in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009.  This is a tragic true story which should not be missed. The production debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film.  Forest Whitaker is one of the film's producers.  This film received critical acclaim upon its release and earned other awards. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Please come to view a fascinating documentary this evening called "Versaille '73: American Runway Revolution."    In an era known for protests and sit-ins, the 1973 Grand Divertissement at Versailles made a statement of its own: a fashion statement.  The legendary event pitting the five lions of French couture - Givenchy, Dior, Ungaro, Yves Saint Laurent, and Pierre Cardin with five American designers, Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows and Bill Blass -  created a cross-stitch of change across fashion, race, business and catwalks.  When African American models Bethann Hardison, Pat Celeveland, Alva Chinn, Billie Blair, Noram Jean Darden, Barbara Jackson, Jennifer Brice, Romana Saunders and Amina Warsuma boarded the plan to Paris, they had no idea they would help change the course of fashion and pull off its biggest coup.  Versailles '73: American Runway Revolution tells this story.  This is a free screening and is open to all.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
