misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: The Bay State - A Multicultural Landscape     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the months of May and June, the Library is hosting a very talented Massachusetts photographer named Mark Chester.  Mr. Chester has captured a "mini United Nations" within the state through images of immigrants.  He has  been photographing immigrants for years, making it his mission to take pictures of two people from every nation in the world.  He is well on his way to completing his goal because since 2011, Mark has photographed people from 185 of the world's 196 countries, all of them immigrants who have settled in Massachusetts.  All of his subjects have become naturalized citizens and portions of his selections of more than 350 photos have been exhibited around the state, most recently at the State House.  He is now putting them into a book which he plans to distribute free to schools and libraries.  The project - called "The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape: Photographs of New Americans" - has taken on new meaning in 2017.  The purpose of his exhibits are to enlighten, to educate, and to make people aware of residents from different countries.  His work offers a glimpse into the lives of immigrants who have embraced their new country, but have still retained some of the culture of their homelands.  Mr. Chester - who lives on Cape Cod - attends naturalization ceremonies and has even been known to ask cab drivers where they're from.  One of the project's sponsors is the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition as Mark's work helps capture the sense of optimism many immigrants have after they settle here.  For more information, go to http://www.markchesterphotography.com.   We encourage you to visit the library while the display is in place as it is so culturally enriching and inspiring to see.  Please note that the "Mark Chester Cultural Diversity Project" is a recipient of a Milton Cultural Council grant (Spring 2016).  Also there will be a free and open reception for this exhibit on Thursday, June 8th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery.

Our mission is to educate and engage with Milton residents in non-violent action to prevent war; to cooperate with other organizations in building a movement to promote global peace and social and economic justice; to expose the disastrous costs of war at home and aboard; to protect the civil rights and liberties that underlie our democratic heritage and promise as a nation; and to work locally to end other forms of violence.

Everyone is welcome.  To receive an agenda before the meeting contact Louis Pierro.

The most explosive clash to ever rock the Marvel cinematic Universe ignites a firestorm of conflict in the game-changing epic, "Captain America : Civil War."  In the wake of collateral damage, government pressure to rein in the Avengers drives a deep wedge between Captain American (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), causing a catastrophic rift that turns the two friends into bitter enemies.  Against a backdrop of divided loyalties, their fellow Avengers must deal with the fallout.  Pick a side in this spectacular adventure, packed with mind-blowing action and edge-of-your-seat suspense!  The movie is rated PG-13 for "extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem" and the running time is 147 minutes.  PLEASE NOTE SPECIAL START TIME OF 6 PM.    This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the film "Sully."  On January 15, 2009, Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and his co-pilot (Aaron Eckhart) begin a routine flight that turns terrifying.  Sully pulls off the impossible and glides his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard.  Even though he's heralded for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an all-out investigation threatens to destroy Sull's reputation and career. The movie is rated PG-13 for "some peril and brief strong language" and the running time is 96 minutes.  It starts promptly at 6:30 PM.  This is an excellent film so come if you haven't see it.   The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Do you have a Smart Device and not sure how to use it to shoot photos and more?  Have a bunch of photos on your phone that you're not sure what to do with?  Why and how we take photos -- and the type of phone we use -- can affect how we choose to edit and store them.  And whether you plan to print, create digital slideshows, publish photo books, or post to social media, you'll need to back up and organize your photos.  Each student will leave class with a personal photo management plan.  This class will be taught by Bob Michelson of Photography by Michelson, Inc. based in Braintree, MA.  He is a published underwater photographer/videographer, naturalist, and PADI Project AWARE Fish I.D.  His work has appeared in numerous magazines and museums.  Bob offers workshops and seminars on a variety of subjects related to the ocean, fish habits and underwater photography to schools, corporations, clubs, and private organizations across the northeast.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

There will be a free screening this evening of the film "Florence Foster Jenkins," starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant.  In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair (Hugh Grant) goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he's facing his greatest challenge yet.  Come and enjoy this true story which is hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.  It's a wonderful film and a poignant tale.  The rating is PG-13 for "brief suggestive material, parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13."  The running time is 1 hour, 51 minutes and it will start promptly at 6:30 PM.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
