misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: The Bay State - A Multicultural Landscape     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the months of May and June, the Library is hosting a very talented Massachusetts photographer named Mark Chester.  Mr. Chester has captured a "mini United Nations" within the state through images of immigrants.  He has  been photographing immigrants for years, making it his mission to take pictures of two people from every nation in the world.  He is well on his way to completing his goal because since 2011, Mark has photographed people from 185 of the world's 196 countries, all of them immigrants who have settled in Massachusetts.  All of his subjects have become naturalized citizens and portions of his selections of more than 350 photos have been exhibited around the state, most recently at the State House.  He is now putting them into a book which he plans to distribute free to schools and libraries.  The project - called "The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape: Photographs of New Americans" - has taken on new meaning in 2017.  The purpose of his exhibits are to enlighten, to educate, and to make people aware of residents from different countries.  His work offers a glimpse into the lives of immigrants who have embraced their new country, but have still retained some of the culture of their homelands.  Mr. Chester - who lives on Cape Cod - attends naturalization ceremonies and has even been known to ask cab drivers where they're from.  One of the project's sponsors is the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition as Mark's work helps capture the sense of optimism many immigrants have after they settle here. For more information on the MIRA Coalition’s future projects with Mr. Chester, go to http://bit.ly/BayStatebook, and for the artist's website, go to http://www.markchesterphotography.com.   We encourage you to visit the library while the display is in place as it is so culturally enriching and inspiring to see.  Please note that the "Mark Chester Cultural Diversity Project" is a recipient of a Milton Cultural Council grant (Spring 2016).  Also there will be a free and open reception for this exhibit on Thursday, June 8th from 6-8 PM in the Gallery.

During the month of July, the library's Wotiz Gallery will host talented photographer Paul Weiss of Dorchester, MA who will display black and white pictures on a variety of topics, including portraits and design.  He is from North Carolina, attended college in the south and then studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC.  He then worked for Andy Warhol for several years, as the artist really admired Paul's portrait work.  His portfolio is primarily in black and white, and he uses analog (not digital) to create the images.  He develops and prints everything himself, and his images have been shown in numerous galleries, private collections, universities and museums.  It has also been displayed along side some of the masters he studied in college: Edward Weston, Weegee, Yousuf Karsh, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Mary Ellen mark to name a few.  Please come and enjoy this fine exhibit from June 29th through July 31st.

Do you have a Smart Device and not sure how to use it to shoot photos and more?  Have a bunch of photos on your phone that you're not sure what to do with?  Why and how we take photos -- and the type of phone we use -- can affect how we choose to edit and store them.  And whether you plan to print, create digital slideshows, publish photo books, or post to social media, you'll need to back up and organize your photos.  Each student will leave class with a personal photo management plan.  This class will be taught by Bob Michelson of Photography by Michelson, Inc. based in Braintree, MA.  He is a published underwater photographer/videographer, naturalist, and PADI Project AWARE Fish I.D.  His work has appeared in numerous magazines and museums.  Bob offers workshops and seminars on a variety of subjects related to the ocean, fish habits and underwater photography to schools, corporations, clubs, and private organizations across the northeast.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

There will be a free screening of the first pick in our summer beach movies series and it is the great film "Jaws," a terrific shark saga which came out in 1975.  This exciting and beloved film was directed by Steven Spielberg, and it set the standard for edge-of-your-seat suspense, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon and forever changing the movie industry. When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town's chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again.  Featuring an unforgettable score that evokes pure terror, "Jaws" remains one of hte most influential and gripping adventures in motion picture history.  This film is rated PG and the running time is 2 hours, 4 minutes.  Come to the library and enjoy the cool atmosphere, while checking out our oceanside-inspired movies!  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

There will be a free screening this evening of the film "Florence Foster Jenkins," starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant.  In the 1940s, New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) dreams of becoming a great opera singer. Unfortunately, her ambition far exceeds her talent. The voice Florence hears in her head is beautiful, but to everyone else it is quite lousy. Her husband St. Clair (Hugh Grant) goes to extreme lengths to make sure his wife never finds out how awful she truly is. When Florence announces her plans for a concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair soon realizes that he's facing his greatest challenge yet.  Come and enjoy this true story which is hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.  It's a wonderful film and a poignant tale.  The rating is PG-13 for "brief suggestive material, parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13."  The running time is 1 hour, 51 minutes and it will start promptly at 6:30 PM.

The second movie in our summer beach series will be shown today and it is "Weekend at Bernie's," which is described as "engagingly wacky and deliciously dark" comedy.  Brace yourself for a hectic and fun weekend filled with mayhem, misadventure...   and murder!  Hilarious performances by Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman make this fatally funny comedy a "good old knockdown slapstick with just the right dose of cruelty thrown in."  It sounded like a great weekend away at their boss Bernie's beachside pleasure palace, but when working stiffs Richard and Larry arrive to find a REAL stiff- their murdered boss - they're forced to concoct a crazy scheme to avoid being implicated and/or dead themselves!  With Bernie propped up and his death effectively covered up, Richard and Larry's weekend escape becomes exactly that, as they dodge curious babes, a curtain of bullets and one confused hit man!   The running time is 98 minutes and the rating is PG-13 for adult situations and language, so this movie is not suitable for young children.  Please come to the library for a cool and fun time at this afternoon event which promises lots of laughter.

This afternoon there will be a free screening of the 1965 classic film "Beach Blanket Bingo" starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.  This sand-inspired party film was directed by William Asher, and it is the fifth and also best-known movie in the beach party film series produced by American International Pictures.  It also features Paul Lynde, Don Rickles and Buster Keaton.  A singer, Sugar Kane (Linda Evans), is unwittingly being used for publicity stunts for her latest album by her agent, for example, faking a skydiving stunt, actually performed by Bonnie.  Meanwhile, Frankie takes up skydiving at Bonnie's prompting; she secretly wants to make her boyfriend Steve jealous.  This of course prompts Dee Dee to also try free-falling.  Eric Von Zipper and his Malibu Rat Pack bikers also show up, with Von Zipper falling madly in love with Sugar Kane.  To top all this, Bonehead falls in love with a mermaid.  Eventually, Von Zipper "puts the snatch" on Sugar Kane.  Ths film takes a "Perils of Pauline"-like twist, with the evil South Dakota Slim (Timothy Carey) kidnapping Sugar and tying her to a buzz-saw.  It is not rated and the running time is 98 minutes. Come and enjoy a blast from the past with this fun and crazy movie, and enjoy the coolness of the library.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Come share your writing with others here at the library, no matter how accomplished you may be!  Stop by and spend some time with experienced writing instructor Betty Siegel.  Ms. Siegel has taught in the College of Liberal Arts and Science at Quincy College in the areas of ESL, Oral Communication, Vocabulary, College Study Skills, Reading, Basic Composition, Critical Thinking, and more.  She is also a professional tutor, and a writer with stories published in Camper's Monthly, Downeast, and Yankee.    She brings her critical eye combined with a warm sense of humor to this workshop to help writers of all ages and skill levels improve their work.  Some topics covered each session may include a review of the writing process and content; short written exercises to practice the various types of creative writing; an introduction to the use of "hooks;" and ways to organize what you write.  Work on your own stories and get great feedback and inspiration in this ongoing program, which will meet twice a month on Wednesday nights this Spring.  The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be a free showing of the film "The Finest Hours" this evening.  Based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history, this is a tale of courage, loyalty and honor in the face of overwhelming odds.  When a massive storm strikes off the coast of Cape Cod, it rips a T-2 oil tanker in half, trapping more than 30 sailors on its rapidly sinking stern, Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his crew set out in a 12-seat rescue boat to save them,  as Chief Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) struggles to buy his men more time.  Packed with heroic larger-than-life action and driven by the men's faith in their mission, themselves and one another,  "The Finest Hours" is a triumph.  It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of peril and may not be suitable for children, and the running time is 117 minutes.  We are showing this at the library in honor of the author, Michael Tougias, who will be speaking at the Milton Public Library Foundation gala which will be held in the Fall.  Please join us if you have not seen this great film!    And for more details, go to our website at www.miltonlibrary.org.
