misc_none Wotiz Gallery Display by Painters Jennie Terminello and Leona Hoey     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of May 2016, the Milton Public Library will host a joint exhibit of artwork by two local painters: Lee (Leona) Hoey and Jennie Terminiello.  The paintings will show many different styles and subjects, some in acrylics and oils.  Flowers, landscapes, Italian scenes, and more will be displayed.  Ms. Hoey is a former Fine Arts, Applied Art, Humanitites, Art Appreciation and Art History teacher at Fontbonne Academy, and Ms. Terminiello studied acrylics with her.  Lee is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, was voted “Teacher of the Year 1989, Golden Apple Award, Boston Globe,” is a Master of Decorative Painting, and has taken continuing education classes in art.  She is a resident of Milton and has lectured many times at various chapters of the Society of Decorative Painters, Painting, Gardening, Interior Design & Gourmet Cooking.  She also started out as a mural artist for Boston businesses which supported her during her college years.  Lee is a scrimshaw artist, interior designer, and is a master of furniture design.  She now volunteers to teach painting to "over 60" students.  Jennie Terminiello took lessons from watercolorist Allen Chambers as well as studying with other art teachers, and is a resident of Milton.

This is what Lee Hoey has to say about her current volunteer teaching: "I was thrilled to see that an artist over 85 years old, still creating, won a prize in the "over 60" competition in March 2016.  What thrills me even more and fills my heart with joy is to watch my students, all over 60 years old, stand back and take in what they have accomplished.  The expressive change behind each painting or drawing adds a touch of magic to their efforts and it surprises them immensely.  We are always being told that it is too much effort to learn anything new, especially when we are convinced erroneously that art is a talent only certain people have.  Anyone can learn to draw or paint and yes, it may take a different kind of lesson plan for some, but it is totally possible and it is a wonderfully healthy tool for our well being and confidence.  We are never too old!  I am so very proud of each person I teach and our brains are still growling with life giving knowledge."  There will be a free and open reception on Thursday, May 5th from 6 - 8 PM.  Please do not miss this lovely exhibit in the Wotiz this month.

Director Will Adamczyk will hold a session of his quarterly "Eclectic Book Club."  This month's book is Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro Kazuo.

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.  Hailsham seems like a pleasant English boarding school, far from the influences of the city.  It's students are well tended and supported, trained in art and literature, and become just the sort of people the world wants them to be.  But, curiously, they are taught nothing of the outside world and are allowed little contact with it.  Within the grounds of Hailsham, Kathy grows from schoolgirl to young woman, but it's only when she and her friends Ruth and Tommy leave the safe grounds of the school (as they knew they would), that they realize the full truth of what Hailsham is.  Come join Will for a fascinating discussion about a gripping story.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

misc_none Wotiz Gallery Display by Artist Thato Mwosa     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of June, talented Milton artist Thato Mwosa of Tulia Art will display her drawings in the Wotiz Gallery.  She is a filmmaker, screenwriter, artist, teacher and mother of two boys and one girl.  This is what she says about her work: "....I started Tulia Art out of sheer frustration of not being able to find ballerina art that represented my daughter.  When I started decorating my daughter's room, I wanted a ballerina-themed decor.  I had a vision of what I wanted; I wanted four art pieces of similar ballerinas in different poses wearing colorful vibrant colored tutus.  I created 3 ballerina illustrations and posted them on Facebook; the feedback was overwhelmingly positive and exciting.  I went back to the studio and produced more and more.  I have always enjoyed drawing, but I never fully explored it as a business.  My friends urged me to start an Etsy store and now here I am, excited to share my art with the world and humbled by the support I have received from my friends, family and even strangers.  Currenlty, I have a collection of 35 girls and counting.  The girls each have names.  They are elegant, sophisticated, graceful, vibrant and most importantly they represent me and my daughter.  I also make African inspired doodbles/zentangles.  I started making zentangles as a hobby years ago.  Each piece takes a long time to make because of all the intricate details I put into each piece.  The African art can be found under the Afrik Art..."   You can check out her website at www.tuliart.com and Afrik Art.  Also http://www.etsy.com/people/thatomwosa will give you information about purchasing the pieces in her portfolio. Don't miss this great exhibit during June.

Our annual Teddy Bear Picnic is a time to celebrate with our favorite stuffed friends (of whatever variety) although our own Buddy Bear especially wants to meet all your bears!

This year our special entertainment will be provided by Jeannie Mack. Accompanying herself on guitar, Jeannie performs all kinds of fun, bounce-around songs geared to please young kids and their accompanying adults. Expect to hear a few special songs about bears to go along with the teddy bear picnic theme. Be prepared to clap along, sing along, dance like no one’s watching, and use your imaginations to act out stories through song!

Bring your teddies, a comfy cushion or blanket, and your lunch. We'll picnic on the lawn, weather permitting (indoors if it's wet). Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

There will be a free screening of the film "Spectre" tonight starring Daniel Craig.  A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra, the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal.  Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.  Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh, the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of M16, led by M (Ralph Fiennes).  Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny and Q to help him seek out Madeleine Swann, the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White, who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE.  As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.  As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.  The movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, some disturbing images, sensuality, and language, and the running time is 148 minutes. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet five times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open two weeks before the event.

During the month of July, there will be a modern painting exhibit by Milton artist Donna Elliot.  This summary comes from her website, which is http://ddivineexpression.com:  "Donna Elliott is spiritually connected to her Creator, with a real passion for life and humanity. She is a self-taught artist who painted her first piece, Emancipation, in January 2013.  Feeling the need to celebrate her freedom to express herself through art, she painted her next piece Celebration.  Her work is positive with beautiful, bold and vibrant colors which serves as a true reflection of herself.  Painting takes her away from everyday life and helps her to see and share the beauty of who we are and why we are here.  This is truly her "divine expression."  Please come and view this fun and colorful display this month.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the film "Bridge of Spies" starring Tom Hanks, starting promptly at 6:30 PM.  A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, this movie is "absolutely brilliant and totally riveting" (Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun-Times).  James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on a nearly impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.  High stakes and suspense power a story that captures the essence of a man who risked everything, vividly bringing his personal journey to life.  Mark Rylance won an Academy Award for his role as the alleged Russian spy.  This is rated PG-13 for some violence and brief strong language, and the running time is approximately 141 minutes.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Many Beatles authors have cited John F. Kennedy's assassination on 22 November 1963 as a cause of the Beatles' sudden popularity in the United States in early 1964.  Their logic: Kennedy's assasination made America sad, then the Beatles made America happy again.  But this commonly accepted answer is overly simplistic.  America has suffered numerous tragedies and rebounded each time, but the popularity and staying power of the Beatles remains unmatched in American history.  The real answer is that Kennedy's life and death inadvertently primed the nation for the Beatles' arrival and success.  This 60-minute program will explain how and why.  Beatles scholar Aaron Krerowicaz graduated from Butler University with a Bachelor's of Music in 2008, then earned a Master's of Music from Boston University in 2010, and a Graduate Artist Diploma from the University of Hartford in 2012.  While still a student in Connecticut, he won a research grant through the University to study the Beatles.  Since then, he has made a full-time career of presenting his research and analysis of the band's music and their place in history, and has presented his findings more than 200 times throughout the U.S. and New England.  He has published several books on the subject, and the most recent has the same title as this program, which was published in June 2015.  His works are for sale at Amazon.com and he has visited 14 states to deliver 86 presentations.  He made his first English lecture tour in July 2015, during which he spoke twice in London and thrice in Liverpool, the band's hometown.  Don't miss this interesting talk about a favorite band!  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.
