misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit with Artist Robson Pereira     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Painter Robson Pereira is a Brazilian-born self-taught artist who emigrated to the U.S. in 2007 and now lives in Brockton.  As many artists do, he has held lots of other jobs to support his art: landscaper, house painter and more.  Each job he has had shows in his art's naturalism of expression.  He is passionate about art and his paintings, finding much inspiration from nature.  Pereira's style is unqiue and most of the paintings are not done using a brush.  Instead he uses various objects to paint with: pieces of wood, plastic bags, dried tree branches, paint tubes, disposable plastic spoons, tassel grass, or anything that will present a unique style and texture to the piece.  The effects are similar to modern period painters such as Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky.  Come and enjoy this interesting exhibit during the month of August.

misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit with Painter Rob Franco     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of September, painter Rob Franco will display his work in the Wotiz Gallery.  His passion for art began an an early age during visits to a neighborhood artist in Newport, RI. This led to training as an illustrator in the U.S. Air Force, and then continued as a graphic artist in the Boston area.  After studying with renowned artist and teacher, Albert Handell, at drawing and pastel workshops in Woodstock, NY, the focus of Rob's art is portraits of children and animals.  He has a fascination with the ocean and other bodies of water, and they also continue to inspire his work.  He enjoys searching the New England and Eastern Shore coastlines to find boats and wildlife such as the Wild Assateague Island ponies, birds and sea creatures to paint.  His website is www.robfranco.com and he has a studio in Natick, MA.  Please come and view this beautiful display in the Wotiz this month.

MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE!

Come with your family, friends or neighbors and learn more about these incredibly rewarding experiences as well as other life changing opportunities through Milton Rotary Global Youth Programs!

If you are a Milton resident between the ages of 15 and 19, in the upper one third of your academic class, and want to be a world traveler, the Rotary Club of Milton could give you a ticket for a great experience you will remember your whole life. In 2016-2017 we will be offering two exchanges – a long term and a short term or the opportunity your family to host a student a few month in the year. Hosting an exchange student is another way to experience a foreign culture and foster world citizenship.

We are looking for volunteers to host a female student during the academic year of 2015-16. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with exchange students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities. The commitment for one family would be for about 2 to 3 months.

The long term exchange means the Milton student we select will attend secondary school overseas for one year, for a minimal cost with room, board, and schooling provided by the host Rotary club.

In the short-term exchange the Milton student will go overseas for about three weeks during the summer vacation, staying with a Rotary family abroad
that also has a teenaged student.  At the end of the stay the foreign teenager will spend about three weeks with the Milton student’s family.

Join Library Director Will Adamczyk and discuss this month's selection, Blindness, by Jose Saramago.

A city is hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" that spares no one. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital, but there the criminal element holds everyone captive, stealing food rations and assaulting women. There is one eyewitness to this nightmare who guides her charges—among them a boy with no mother, a girl with dark glasses, a dog of tears—through the barren streets, and their procession becomes as uncanny as the surroundings are harrowing. As Blindness reclaims the age-old story of a plague, it evokes the vivid and trembling horrors of the twentieth century, leaving readers with a powerful vision of the human spirit that's bound both by weakness and exhilarating strength.

Pianist/composer Deborrah Wyndham, who has given over 3,000 past performances,  plays a wide variety of music from ragtime and other early jazz styles to original contemporary music.  With appearances on FOX, NBC and ABC, listeners have described her playing as sounding "like four hands."  Deborah performs regularly throughout the U.S. and her many venues have included lots of public libraries!   The program she will perform on this date is called "The History of Ragtime" and it is described as follows:  "Through music, Deborrah Wyndham shares the history of our nation's first 'pop' music:  ragtime.  Also the beginnings of jazz, ragtime has gone on to influence many other musicians and styles of music.  With different ethnic musical influences and at first rejected by society for its unusual syncopated rhythm and venues where it was played, ragtime later on received wide acclaim and its popularity spread fast.  Ragtime is an important part of our American musical heritage."   Please join us for a fun hour with a talented musician.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.

The movie "McFarland USA" will be screened tonight in a free showing.  It is an American 2015 sports drama directed by Niki Caro and produced by Walt Disney Pictures.  Inspired by the 1987 true story, the movie follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California's farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White, a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school.  With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.  This movie stars Kevin Costner and Mario Bello and starts promptly at 6:30 PM.   Light refreshments will be served and it is appropriate for all ages.  The rating is PG and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Mentalist Rory Raven will give a fun one-hour program to help us all celebrate Halloween and things spooky!  It is called "Seances: Searching for the Spirits" which looks at the history of seances.  A mentalist is a theatrical mind-reader; a performer who, using a variety of techniques, is able to produce results that would only seem possible by psychic or paranormal means.  The techniques range from a knowledge of subtle psychological principles and the quirks of human behavior, to quick thinking and a good memory.  He is also interested in things like suggestion, non-verbal communication, and the so-called trance state.  He is not psychic but people who believe in the paranormal will believe no matter what he tells them, and those who don't believe won't believe no matter what he shows them.  He does not try to convince people of the validity of one viewpoint over another, and he just asks his audience to sit back, concentrate on your mother's maiden name, and enjoy the show....!  Rory also has a pretty sound knowledge of the kinds of tricks psychics have used and continue to use to convince their clients of their powers, and he may occasionally expose one of these to illustrate a point, or when giving a lecture-demonstration.  Come and learn about this interesting phenomenon and find out more about how it's done.  This presentation is from a skeptical point of view and in addition to talking about the history, the fakery involved and famous people who attended them, it includes audience particpation.  This program is appropriate for all ages and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Hey, kids in grades 4, 5 and 6: the Children's Room would like to offer you a chance to read books and share your opinions about them with the entire state of Massachusetts!

The Massachusetts Children's Book Award was established as a program to encourage children to read great books. This year the MCBA Book Club will read one book from the 2015 shortlist each month, and in February-March we will vote for the book we think deserves to be named the book of the year! October's book is Charlie Bumpers vs. the Teacher of the Year by Bill Harley. Copies will be available one month in advance of the program at the Children's Room desk, or by placing a hold in our online catalog. Please read the book in advance of our meeting - you'll have more fun that way smiley

Registration is required and will open three weeks in advance of the program.

Jeannie Mack performs the perfect combination of songs, rhymes and handplays about pumpkins, trick-or-treating, jack-o-lanterns, tickly spiders, and silly witches to delight 1 – 5 year-olds.  And what would a Halloween program be without a scary story? Jeannie’s use of a pop-up book about some friendly ghosts provides just the right touch to round out the fun. Finger puppets, a huge jack-o-lantern prop, and various hanging Halloween visuals all add to the spooky atmosphere!

Costumes are encouraged! For ages 1-5 with parent/caregiver. No registration required.
