misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit: Black Leaders (Labor Posters)     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

This month Stephen Lewis will display labor posters from his collection on the theme: "Black Leaders."  Mr. Lewis owns a collection of more than 6000 posters, and he is a long-time activist in the labor movement and the former Treasurer of his union.  He has exhibited at a number of public libraries in MA and also at the state Heritage parks.  He has presented at the annual conference of the National Council on Public History, and some cable TV programs.  This exhibit is a tribute to black leaders who rose to prominence and/or leadership positions, often in spite of discrimination, repression, and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.  Some were assassinated because of their work on behalf of others.  Space does not allow for detailed descriptions of their lives, but interested people are encouraged to read books that have been published about many of them, or to view films that were produced about some of them.  Please come and visit this excellent display during the month of February.  The project is supported in part by a grant from the Milton Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.  For more information about displaying your artwork at the library, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, at the Reference desk.

Hey, kids in grades 4, 5 and 6: the Children's Room would like to offer you a chance to read books and share your opinions about them with the entire state of Massachusetts!

The Massachusetts Children's Book Award was established as a program to encourage children to read great books. This year the MCBA Book Club has been reading one book from the 2015 shortlist each month, and at this meeting we will vote for the book we think deserves to be named the book of the year! For February, readers may choose one of the following two books to read: Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo or Mr. & Mrs. Bunny: Detectives Extraordinaire! by Polly Horvath. Copies will be available one month in advance of the program at the Children's Room desk, or by placing a hold in our online catalog. Please read the book in advance of our meeting - you'll have more fun that way smiley

Registration is required and will open three weeks in advance of the program.

misc_none March Wotiz Gallery Exhibit with Painter Ted Nystrom     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

During the month of March, painter Ted Nystrom will display his work in the Wotiz Gallery.  For over 40 years, Theodore Nystrom has been a familiar and popular "plein air" artist who enjoys painting on location throughout  New England.  His well-known watercolors of famous landmarks, seascapes, and landscapes are rendered in a realistic style, using what he refers to as his "natural" palette.  This is what he says:  "The vibrant colors I use are those which emulate hues created by Mother Nature for us to enjoy.......A strong sky is very important in each of my paintings.  The sky is the origin of light.  Oceans and waterways mirror, to some degree, the colors of the sky, as do other elements.  I strive for this natural color unity in my paintings."  Nystrom's subjects reflect his belief of one's peaceful coexistence with nature.  Boats, houses, fences and gardens are commonly found in his compositions, along with untamed natural elements of ocean and sky.  He is a supporting member of many art organizations, such as the prestigious Copley Society in Boston.  A lifetime member and a signature artist member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society in Pawtucket, Ted lives in West Bridgewater, MA.  He is also a member of the Scituate Art Association and a gallery artist in the Front Street Art Gallery in Scituate, MA.  His works are in private collections, both domestic and international.  He accepts commissions for landscapes and house portraits, and he may be reached at: www.tednystromart.com or Email tfystrom@aol.com

One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the often very different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.

In a series of two sessions, participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in the chosen play and will then view excerpts from the films.  Further discussion will focus on how the directors have brought their special vision to the material.

There will be no lectures. Participants should read each play and be willing to share their ideas about it and about what they see on the screen.

The plays: Sunday, March 13 - Henry V.     Sunday, April 3 - Hamlet.

Discussion leader: David Smith was a secondary school English teacher for 50 years, the last 34 of which were at Milton Academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non-Fiction Writing.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the very often different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.

In this session participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in Shakespeare's "HAMLET", and will then view excerpts from the film. Further discussion will focus on how the directors have brought their special vision to the material.

There will be no lecturing.  Participants should read "HAMLET" and be willing to share their ideas about it and about what they see on the screen.

The Discussion Leader: David Smith was a secondary school teacher for 50 years, 34 of which were at Milton Academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non- Fiction Writing.

There will be a free screening tonight of "Steve Jobs" starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet.  This 2015 film tells the story of the tech giant co-founded by its subject, as Steve Jobs gathers brilliant people to deliver a product whose elegance belies the intricate complexities at its core.  His passion and ingenuity have been the driving force behind the digital age.  However, his drive to revolutionize technology was sacrificial.  Ultimately it affected his family life and possibly his health.  In this revealing film, we explore the trials and triumphs of a modern day genius: the late CEO of Apple Inc.  The movie is rated R for language and is not suitable for children.  The running time is 122 minutes.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Lancaster, MA photographer Peter Christoph will give a one-hour talk about birds in New England, with accompanying photos. Don't bother with wading boots, bug spray, or trekking deep into our New England swamps to get an intimate look at the varieties of birds living there because Peter has done the sloshing and crawling for you.  He has captured osprey, herons, and other cavity dwellers building nests, feeding their young, and catching their prey.  This narrated slide-show is a feast for the eyes as well as the soul.  Peter will have his book "Birds," which accompanies his presentation, available for sale and signing immediately afterwards.  Mr. Christoph is a full-time wildlife photographer, speaker, and author, and his passion is photographing birds.  He feels very fortunate to earn a living doing something he loves, and he offers private bird photography workshops on a limited basis.  His passion for capturing birds in their natural habitat, his technical excellence, and his artistic vision are revealed in his compelling images.  His bird images have been published in several magazines and have won numerous national and international awards.  Do not miss this great nature program!  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to all.

Kevin Rogers, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands, will give a one-hour talk about them this evening.  As advocates and providers of direct volunteer service, the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands have expanded educational, environmental, and recreational opportunities in the Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area.  They have provided volunteer service to the islands since 1979 and they give visitors information about the area through interpretive tours, educational programming and a welcoming preesence on the islands.  The harbor islands call out with a sense of mystery and lure transmitted to each individual in a special way.  Come find your place on the islands - it could change your life!  This group offers boat tours, lectures, meetings and social gatherings all related to the islands.  Mr. Rogers will give an interesting overview of the area and the services provided there.  Come and enjoy learning more about this fun place to visit.  The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be a free screening tonight of the film called "Everest" starring Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, and Jake Gyllenhaal.  The film is a 2015 American-British 3D biographical adventure-climate disaster survival thriller drama directed by Baltasar Kormakur and it is inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain.  Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind.  Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival.  This movie is rated PG13 for intense peril and disturbing images and is not suitable for children.  The running time is 121 minutes and it starts promptly at 6:30 PM.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
