misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit with Artist Diane Sawyer     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of May, local painter Diane Sawyer will display her work in the Wotiz Gallery.  She received a BFA from the Boston Museum School and Tufts University in 1979, and has completed additional coursework at MassArt, Museum School, and Bennington College.  She has also studied with numerous artists.  Diane describes her work this way: "My pastels are done in very soft pastels on a sanded paper.  The sanded surface allows for colors to be layered over one another, creating a sense of space and atmosphere.  Working with pastel is working with pure pigment.  The surface is touched as little as possible, except in areas like the sky, which is usually blended.  Layering the pastel pigments has allowed me to explore light and color, and how they change over distance.  I am particularly intrigued right now with water, how it reflects the sky, but also is transparent, with the objects below and above the surface combining in an every-changing mosaic.  All of my work is essentially about light, the way it falls on the landscape.  I love the light in the warm summer months, especially in the morning and the evening, when the sun is low in the sky.  Shadows deepen, and colors seem especially vivid in the slanting light.  In the winter, the light is cooler, and the colors more muted.  However, it is often clearer, and there is a beautiful stillness and clarity in the landscape."  Ms. Sawyer is owner and principal of Sawyer Design Associates, LLC, a graphic design studio in Milton, MA.   For more information about her fine art see: dianesawyer.wordpress.com and for more information about Sawyer Design see: www.sawyerdesign.net      Please come to the free and open reception for this exhibit, happening on Thursday evening, May 14th from 6-8 PM.  Meet the artist and enjoy this lovely display.  For more information about displaying your art at the library, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian.

misc_none Wotiz Art Exhibit with Painter Joyce Caggiano     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of June, local painter Joyce Caggiano will display her work in the Wotiz Gallery.  The exhibit will feature oil paintings on canvas with the theme "Trees in Motion."  Ms. Caggiano, a resident of Milton for the past eight years, has been drawing and painting since childhood.  In high school and college she received honors for her artwork and was encouraged to continue to develop her skill.  During the past 20 years she has exhibited in Gross Pointe and Detroit, MI, Burlington, VT, at the Jefferson Cutter House in Arlington, MA, and at the Milton Art Center.  As an ordained Episcopal priest, she has been immersed in an active ministry at St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Randolph Avenue in Milton.  She believes that spirituality and the aesthetic are at the core of all creative human expression.  The spiritual life sustains and nourishes her creativity.  Caggiano travels to her home in Italy every summer where she finds the time and inspiration to develop her craft.  The Wotiz Gallery will show her unique approach to nature through the static animation of ancient Olive trees.  The title of the exhibit is Slow Dancing, referring to the thousand year dance movement seen through the eyes of the artist.  Please come and view this great exhibit!

Thomas Jefferson said:
Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. I really look with commiseration over the great body of my fellow citizens, who, reading newspapers, live and die in the belief that they have known something of what has been passing in the world. (Letter to John Norvell, June 14, 1807)

On June 11th Milton for Truth proudly presents a documentary film based on the research and book by renowned prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi who batted 1,000 as Los Angeles County Prosecutor, conducting 21 criminal trials and winning 21 convictions, including the Charles Manson murder trial. In the documentary film “The Prosecution of an American President”, Bugliosi presents a meticulously researched legal case that proves George W. Bush took America to war in Iraq under false pretenses and is therefore, under the law, guilty of murder for the deaths of 4,500 young American soldiers who fought and died there. Bush's unlawful war also caused the deaths of more than 100,000 innocent Iraqi men, women, and children. The film, based on Bugliosi's New York Times bestseller, “The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder”, discloses shocking hidden details of how Bush and his Administration systematically lied to Congress and the country.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the very entertaining film, "The Hundred Foot Journey."  Starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake, and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, this uplifting story bursts with flavor, passion and heart.  When the chilly chef proprietress of the Michelin-starred French restaurant in southern France gets wind of a culinary immigrant opening an Indian restaurant just 100 feet from her own, her icy protests escalate to all-out war between the two establishments.  It's a celebration of triumph over exile as these two worlds collide and one young man tries to find the comfort of home in every pot - wherever he may be  The movie is rated PG for thematic elements, some violence, language and brief sensuality, but it is appropriate for all ages.  The running time is 122 minutes and this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Readers' Theatre is a a type of drama performed by "readers" who read from a script and do not have to memorize lines.  Performed with minimal costumes, sets and props, readers' theatre can be not only a great introduction to theatre for kids, but it's also a great way to practice one's oral reading skills, build confidence, and have fun with friends at the same time!

This summer, Miss Sara is leading a Readers' Theatre Club for students entering grades 2-4.  Each week participants will play theatre games, tackle different scripts based on well-known children's books, and make crafts to supplement the stories we're telling together.  The Club will meet six times over the course of the summer, and each meeting will culminate with a performance for family and friends.  While this is a drop-off program, parents/caregivers are asked to return 15 minutes before the end of each class (at 3:45) so they can see the show!

Students must be fluent readers who have completed first grade.  Registration is required and will open three weeks before the event.

Please join us for Circus Minimus's enthralling, whimsical show One-Man Circus in a Suitcase!

From Kevin O’Keefe’s suitcase an entire circus emerges: tent, band, lights, the boisterous ringmaster Steve Fitzpatrick, the officious Mervin Merkle, the incredible Bumbilini Family, the Magician to the Stars Clyde Zerbini, and Keefer–an innocent trying to runaway and join the circus. However, the most important performers emerge from the audience. Each performance becomes a dialogue between the characters and the audience–a light-hearted collaboration.

For all ages. Registration is required and will open three weeks in advance of the program. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Pianist/composer Deborrah Wyndham, who has given over 3,000 past performances,  plays a wide variety of music from ragtime and other early jazz styles to original contemporary music.  With appearances on FOX, NBC and ABC, listeners have described her playing as sounding "like four hands."  Deborah performs regularly throughout the U.S. and her many venues have included lots of public libraries!   The program she will perform on this date is called "The History of Ragtime" and it is described as follows:  "Through music, Deborrah Wyndham shares the history of our nation's first 'pop' music:  ragtime.  Also the beginnings of jazz, ragtime has gone on to influence many other musicians and styles of music.  With different ethnic musical influences and at first rejected by society for its unusual syncopated rhythm and venues where it was played, ragtime later on received wide acclaim and its popularity spread fast.  Ragtime is an important part of our American musical heritage."   Please join us for a fun hour with a talented musician.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.
