misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Painter Tom Maholchic     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of August, Milton painter Tom Maholchic will display his work in the Wotiz Gallery.  Tom has a B.A. in Art from the University of Massachusetts and will be displaying 10 of his abstract landscape paintings done in the past six years.  His work is very colorful and his subject matter is varied, from portraits to designs to landscapes.  His website says this: "I paint/draw.  If you really like what you see, I probably would be willing to part with it.  Let me know what you think.  I'm open to suggestions."  He is a very young talented painter and he enjoys bringing creativity to life through his work.  His first painting is called "The Eye" and he is continually working on new pieces.  Come and enjoy the exhibit by an innovative and unique artist.

misc_none Wotiz Gallery Exhibit by Budding Photographer Elizabeth Thomas     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of September, Milton photographer and resident Elizabeth Thomas will show her work in an exhibit called "A Journey Through the Scenic Nature Isle, The Commonwealth of Dominica."  This is what she says about her photos: "This British-born, Caribbean girl made a trip back home to the island she loves so much, even naming her daughter Dominique in its honor, a long awaited trip after an almost 20 year hiatus.   Filled with excitement, nervous and anxious anticipation, I once again walked the streets I did as a child, reconnected with long lost relatives and explored the island I love so much.  During my two week visit with my family, I saw the island with renewed eyes with my children on their first visit.  With my love of photography and the island I love so much I was able to capture about 2000 photos.  I would love to share images of the Nature Isle, Dominica, and share with all of Milton what makes thie place as special as it is."  Elizabeth will also raffle off one framed photo with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the Friends of the Milton Public Library, of which she is a member.  She will also have information about Dominica on hand and also local treats and snacks for sampling.  Please come and view this colorful and fun display.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

The film "In the Heart of the Sea" will be shown this evening in a free screening.  In the winter of1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no-one could believe: a whale of mammoth proportions with an almost human sense of vengeance.  This real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, but Melville's book only told half the story.  Experience the harrowing aftermath as the pummeled crew battles storms, starvataion, and despair, and the men are forced to do the unthinkable in order to survive.  Ron Howard directs this astonishing true story based on the best-selling book by Nathaniel Philbrick.  Chris Hemsworth stars as the vessel's veteran first mate and Benjamin Walker is the ship's less-than-experienced captain.  The movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material.  The film is not suitable for children.  The running time is 122 minutes and so we are able to go       BACK TO OUR REGULAR START TIME OF 6:30 PM.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be a one-hour concert today with singer and guitarist Howie Newman and his duo partner, fiddler-player Jackie Damsky.  One of the most engaging performers on the New England folk circuit, Howie Newman combines music, comedy and audience participation to provide a truly unique entertainment experience.  His amusing compositions are up-tempo and catchy, and he keeps things lively with funny between-songs banter and short comedy bits (there is a also a smattering of serious songs).  Song topics include television commercials, baseball, cell phones, middle age dating, the weather, intergalactic garbage collection, and more.  And the material is totally clean, suitable for all ages.  Howie has opened for Tom Paxton, Vance Gilbert, Brewer & Shipley, Lui Collins, Don White, Modern Man, Pure Prairie League, Bill Staines, and many others.  His songs have received national airplay on the Dr. Demento Show, National Public Radio and Midnight Special, as well as dozens of other North American outlets.  In the summer of 2015, Howie teamed up with fiddle player/vocalist Jackie Damsky to play a series of outdoor concerts that included a number of local fairs.  Along with his original covers, they play lively covers that span everything from the Beatles to Steely Dan to the Dropkick Murphys.  Their performances feature excellent musicianship, tight harmonies and the usual hilarity.   This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Please join us for a very fun hour!

The film "The Finest Hours" will be shown tonight in a free screening.  Based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history, The Finest Hours is a tale of courage, loyalty and honor in the face of overwhelming odds.  When a massive storm strikes off the coast of Cape Cod, it rips a T-2 oil tanker in half, trapping more than 30 sailors on its rapidly sinking stern.  As Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) and his crew set out in a 12-seat rescue boat to save them, Chief Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) struggles to buy his men more time.  Packed with heroic larger-than-life action and driven by the men's faith in their mission, themselves and one another, The Finest Hours is a triumph.  It is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of peril and may not be suitable for children.   The running time is 117 minutes so please note BACK TO REGULAR START TIME OF 6:30 PM.   This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Old Whiskey and Young Women

Retired Judge R. Marc Kantrowitz will share his new book “Old Whiskey And Young Women: American True Crime Tales of Murder, Sex and Scandal”. Here, some of the most notorious legal cases in American history are explored. What they have in common is that they titillated, if not repulsed, the entire nation when they first occurred. What they still have in common is that, for the most part, they are today nearly totally forgotten.

misc_none 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM From the Shadow of JFK: The Rise of Beatlemania in America with Aaron Krerowicz     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Many Beatles authors have cited John F. Kennedy's assassination on 22 November 1963 as a cause of the Beatles' sudden popularity in the United States in early 1964.  Their logic: Kennedy's assasination made America sad, then the Beatles made America happy again.  But this commonly accepted answer is overly simplistic.  America has suffered numerous tragedies and rebounded each time, but the popularity and staying power of the Beatles remains unmatched in American history.  The real answer is that Kennedy's life and death inadvertently primed the nation for the Beatles' arrival and success.  This 60-minute program will explain how and why.  Beatles scholar Aaron Krerowicaz graduated from Butler University with a Bachelor's of Music in 2008, then earned a Master's of Music from Boston University in 2010, and a Graduate Artist Diploma from the University of Hartford in 2012.  While still a student in Connecticut, he won a research grant through the University to study the Beatles.  Since then, he has made a full-time career of presenting his research and analysis of the band's music and their place in history, and has presented his findings more than 200 times throughout the U.S. and New England.  He has published several books on the subject, and the most recent has the same title as this program, which was published in June 2015.  His works are for sale at Amazon.com and he has visited 14 states to deliver 86 presentations.  He made his first English lecture tour in July 2015, during which he spoke twice in London and thrice in Liverpool, the band's hometown.  Don't miss this interesting talk about a favorite band!  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

The Milton Historical Society Presents:

Liberty's Martyr: The Story of Dr. Joseph Warren

Author Janet Tulare will share her new book 'Liberty's Martyr: The Story of Dr. Joseph Warren'. Today his memory is all but forgotten, buried beneath the dust of time. Joseph Warren was one of the foremost leaders in the years prior to, and the earliest months of the War for Independence. Warren united the First Continential Congress. Joseph Warren sent Pual Revere on his famous 'midnight' ride. It was Dr. Warren who acted as Commander-in-Chief to the army of rag-tag Provincial soldiers until an official appointment was made. Yet, were it not for Warren's prominent role, American History, as we know it, would be greatly altered.

The movie "Suffragette" will be shown this evening in a free screening.  Carrie Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson and Meryl Streep star in this story which is inspired by true events.  "Suffragette" is a moving drama exploring the passon and heartbreak of the women who risked everything in their fight for equality in early 20th century Britain.  The story centers on Maud, a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.'s growing suffragette movement.  Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life.  It is rated PG-13 for some intense violence, thematic elements, brief strong language and partial nudity.  This is a very inspiring story which you should not miss, which starts promptly at 6:30 PM.  The running time is 1 hour, 46 minutes and this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Tonight there will be a free showing of the film "The Big Short" starring Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, and Marisa Tomei.  The financial meltdown of 2005 is the topic of this movie and three separate but parallel stories are told.  Michael Burry, a bizarre autistic-like stock-picking genius, and the first to realize that the market's housing boon is based on a "house of cards" sham; Mark Baum, self-loathing fictional character whose firm picks up insider trading information from a wrong number phone call; Jarred Vennet, a smart-aleck broker who confirms the onimous suspicion; and Charles Gellar and James Shipley, small-time players who hit it big.  It is rated R for pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity.  This is a true story and is based on the book by Michael  called The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine which was published by W.W. Norton in 2010.   This film program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes.  Do not miss this viewing if you have not seen this great Academy Award winning film.  It won in 2016 for "Best Adapted Screenplay" and "Best Motion Picture of the Year."

The fun film "Hello My Name is Doris" will be shown tonight in a free screening.  It stars Sally Field, Max Greenfield, Tyne Daly and more.  When Doris Miller meets John Fremont, sparks fly - at least for Doris.  She lives alone in the cluttered house she shared with her late mother  When Doris begins showing up at John's regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends and her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and familiy, who believe she's making a fool of herself over a guy half her age.  This is a winning comedy-drama built around one of cinema's most endearing leading ladies.  Sally Field proves more than capable of delivering Showalter-level goofiness while giving the film it's heart.  This is a brave little film that shows it's never too late to come of age.  It is rated R for language and the running time is 90 minutes.  It is not suitable for children.   You should enjoy this entertaining movie, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
