    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

There will be a film screening tonight of the documentary Girl Rising.  This is a program appropriate for both a young adult and adult audience.   Travel the globe to meet nine unforgettable girls - striving beyond circumstance, pushing past limits.  Their dreams, their voices, their incredible stories are captured in a film about the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to changed the world.  Girls featured include Ruksana, an Indian pavement-dweller whose father sacrificies his own basic needs for his daughter's dreams; Sokha, an orphan who rises from a life in a Cambodian landfill to become a star student and accomplished dancer; and Suma, who writes songs to help her endure forced servitude in Nepal and today crusades to liberate others.   More than a film, Girl Rising is the heart of a movement that is spreading around the world promoting this powerful truth: educating girls in the developing world can transform families, communities, entire countries and break the cycle of poverty in just one generation.  Please join us for a very inspiring evening to view this excellent documentary.  And bring your teen daughters along!   The film is rated PG13 for thematic material including disturbing images, and the running time is 103 minutes.  It will start promptly at 6:30 PM.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Nathan Murphy discusses Milton Firefighting Book     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Eagle Scout Nathan Murphy will give a talk about a book he wrote with Milton Fire Department Lieutenant Brian Doherty.  It is called 20th Century Firefighting as seen through the eye of illustrator, William Hicks, Milton Fireman 1899-1942 (Blue Hills Technical School, Braintree, MA, c2015). Nathan is completing his Sophomore year in the Engineering Program at Blue Hills Regional Technical School.  He created this book to fulfill the requirements for his Eagle Scout rank and he is very grateful to Lieutenant Doherty for the offer to co-write it as a tribute to Nate's Great, Great Grandfather, William Hicks and his clever and historical drawings.  Doherty is a 35-year veteran of the Milton Fire Department and he is the current President of the Milton Historical Society.  In 1993, he helped to establish the Milton Firefighters Memorial Archives to preserve the history of the department.  The information included in Murphy's book was gathered from archives, including newspaper articles, books, and town publications.  Stories shared by Will Hicks' granddaughters, Thelma Bourneman, Roberta Murphy, and Nancy Archibald, offered glimpses into the private life of "Pa" Hicks.  Their shared stories offered background for some of the sketches.  Please join the authors for an engaging talk about this interesting project.  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Wotiz Gallery Exhibit with Artist Diane Sawyer     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

During the month of May, local painter Diane Sawyer will display her work in the Wotiz Gallery.  She received a BFA from the Boston Museum School and Tufts University in 1979, and has completed additional coursework at MassArt, Museum School, and Bennington College.  She has also studied with numerous artists.  Diane describes her work this way: "My pastels are done in very soft pastels on a sanded paper.  The sanded surface allows for colors to be layered over one another, creating a sense of space and atmosphere.  Working with pastel is working with pure pigment.  The surface is touched as little as possible, except in areas like the sky, which is usually blended.  Layering the pastel pigments has allowed me to explore light and color, and how they change over distance.  I am particularly intrigued right now with water, how it reflects the sky, but also is transparent, with the objects below and above the surface combining in an every-changing mosaic.  All of my work is essentially about light, the way it falls on the landscape.  I love the light in the warm summer months, especially in the morning and the evening, when the sun is low in the sky.  Shadows deepen, and colors seem especially vivid in the slanting light.  In the winter, the light is cooler, and the colors more muted.  However, it is often clearer, and there is a beautiful stillness and clarity in the landscape."  Ms. Sawyer is owner and principal of Sawyer Design Associates, LLC, a graphic design studio in Milton, MA.   For more information about her fine art see: dianesawyer.wordpress.com and for more information about Sawyer Design see: www.sawyerdesign.net      Please come to the free and open reception for this exhibit, happening on Thursday evening, May 14th from 6-8 PM.  Meet the artist and enjoy this lovely display.  For more information about displaying your art at the library, contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian.

Tonight there will be a free screening of the very entertaining film, "The Hundred Foot Journey."  Starring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren, produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake, and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, this uplifting story bursts with flavor, passion and heart.  When the chilly chef proprietress of the Michelin-starred French restaurant in southern France gets wind of a culinary immigrant opening an Indian restaurant just 100 feet from her own, her icy protests escalate to all-out war between the two establishments.  It's a celebration of triumph over exile as these two worlds collide and one young man tries to find the comfort of home in every pot - wherever he may be  The movie is rated PG for thematic elements, some violence, language and brief sensuality, but it is appropriate for all ages.  The running time is 122 minutes and this program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Pianist/composer Deborrah Wyndham, who has given over 3,000 past performances,  plays a wide variety of music from ragtime and other early jazz styles to original contemporary music.  With appearances on FOX, NBC and ABC, listeners have described her playing as sounding "like four hands."  Deborah performs regularly throughout the U.S. and her many venues have included lots of public libraries!   The program she will perform on this date is called "The History of Ragtime" and it is described as follows:  "Through music, Deborrah Wyndham shares the history of our nation's first 'pop' music:  ragtime.  Also the beginnings of jazz, ragtime has gone on to influence many other musicians and styles of music.  With different ethnic musical influences and at first rejected by society for its unusual syncopated rhythm and venues where it was played, ragtime later on received wide acclaim and its popularity spread fast.  Ragtime is an important part of our American musical heritage."   Please join us for a fun hour with a talented musician.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.
