Milton Public Library and the Milton Art Center (MAC) are pleased to present an exhibition of MAC affiliated artists at the Wotiz Gallery.  The Town of Milton has a vibrant and rich arts community, with a multitude of professional artists working in a wide range of mediums. This exhibition of 18 artists affiliated with the MAC is representative of this range of talents, and includes works in pastel, oil, acrylic, collage, printmaking and photography.

Artists included in the show are: Carol Abram, Robert Brodesky, Holly Burns, Joyce Caggiano, Erin Donnellan, Sue Hoy, Jennifer Hughes, Rose Gates, Laurinda O’Connor, Donna Morash, Beth Neville, Scott Nobles, Judy Phakos, Andrea Rex, Marjorie Saintil-Belizaire, Diane Reed Sawyer, Christine Schoettle, and Ian Torney.   The exhibition will run from December 2, 2016 to January 29, 2017. This exhibition of MAC member artists is conceived as an intersection of the goals and values of both organizations.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

The fun film "Hello My Name is Doris" will be shown tonight in a free screening.  It stars Sally Field, Max Greenfield, Tyne Daly and more.  When Doris Miller meets John Fremont, sparks fly - at least for Doris.  She lives alone in the cluttered house she shared with her late mother  When Doris begins showing up at John's regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends and her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and familiy, who believe she's making a fool of herself over a guy half her age.  This is a winning comedy-drama built around one of cinema's most endearing leading ladies.  Sally Field proves more than capable of delivering Showalter-level goofiness while giving the film it's heart.  This is a brave little film that shows it's never too late to come of age.  It is rated R for language and the running time is 90 minutes.  It is not suitable for children.   You should enjoy this entertaining movie, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the often very different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.  In a series of two sessions this Spring, participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in the chosen play and will then view excerpts from the films.  Further discussion will focus on how the directors have brought their special vision to the material.  Participants should read each play and be willing to share their ideas about it and about what they see on the screen.  To order a copy of the play, search the online catalog here on the website (www.miltonlibrary.org) or call the Library's Reference Department at (617) 698-5757, x.3.

The plays are "MacBeth" for today, Sunday, January 22nd and "The Tempest" for Sunday, February 26th.

Discussion leader: David Smith was a secondary school English teacher for 50 years, the last 34 of which were at Milton academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non-Fiction Writing.    This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Registration is not required but is helpful for planning.

Feel like your essay writing could use some help? Have no fear... Ms. Eliza is here!  Please read her description below for more details.. See you there!

This workshop covers the basic steps of writing an effective essay: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. Open to 6th-12th graders, students will learn how to structure a persuasive argument, use evidence to support their ideas, organize their points in a logical order, use a formal academic tone, and proofread for grammatical errors. By the end of the class students will have created a template for essay outlines, and they will take home an essay-writing checklist that they can use independently with future writing assignments. Students should bring a tablet or laptop or paper and a writing utensil.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

One of the things that make Shakespeare great is his openness to multiple interpretations, and the often very different cinematic versions of the same play bring his elasticity vividly home to us.  In this second session of 2 this spring with David Smith, participants will begin with conversation about the issues raised in the chosen play and will then view excerpts from the films.

The play for today's discussion is  "The Tempest."

Discussion leader: David Smith was a secondary school English teacher for 50 years, the last 34 of which were at Milton academy, where he taught courses in English and American Literature, Shakespeare, Literary Performance, and Non-Fiction Writing.    This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and there is no sign-up required.

There will be a free screening of the movie "The Confirmation" this evening.  Clive Owen shines in this irresistible comedy about an estranged father and son, whose weekend adventure leads to something they never imagined: a true family connection.  Scott Carty of KOMO-TV (ABC) Seattle says about this film: "The Confirmation strikes at the heart, tickles the funny bone and delivers hopeful inspiration."  It is rated PG-13 for "some mature thematic elements" and the running time is 101 minutes.  This movie may not be appropriate for children under 13, but otherwise it is a very good choice older kids and adults.  If you haven't seen it, please come as you will very much enjoy the entertaining story and the wonderful characters. "Tuesday Night at the Movies" is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:15 PM Maria Karagianis talks about her visit to a Syrian Refugee Camp     Tell a Friend

Maria Karagianis, an award-winning writer and former guest editor of The Boston Globe, will present a talk about the plight of Syrian refugees in Greece. In May 2015, Maria traveled to the Greek Island of Lesbos, the most Eastern tip of the Mediterranean and within sight of Turkey. At that time hundreds of thousands of refugees were spilling onto the beaches in leaky boats, many of them dying, trying to find freedom from the war. The Greek people of the island, who have been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for their generosity, are now facing an economic catastrophe with tourism, their main source of income, virtually destroyed.

Maria was honored to be invited to stay with a Greek family and have the unique opportunity to experience the island through local eyes. She visited a Syrian refugee camp where 3,500 are imprisoned and in limbo since the EU’s deal to send them back to Turkey. She will share her first-hand observations of the refugee crisis.

The most explosive clash to ever rock the Marvel cinematic Universe ignites a firestorm of conflict in the game-changing epic, "Captain America : Civil War."  In the wake of collateral damage, government pressure to rein in the Avengers drives a deep wedge between Captain American (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), causing a catastrophic rift that turns the two friends into bitter enemies.  Against a backdrop of divided loyalties, their fellow Avengers must deal with the fallout.  Pick a side in this spectacular adventure, packed with mind-blowing action and edge-of-your-seat suspense!  The movie is rated PG-13 for "extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem" and the running time is 147 minutes.  PLEASE NOTE SPECIAL START TIME OF 6 PM.    This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

An informal knitting group will meet at the library which offers an opportunity for people to get together, bring a project to work on (either for 20 minutes or the whole group meeting) and have friends nearby to ask questions when they need help.  The first 30 minutes are devoted to help with your project - the last hour is devoted to social knitting.  Knitters and all other fiber artists are invited to attend!  Questions!  Interested in being included on the Email notice for the gatherings?  Contact Nina Zonnevylle at nzonnevylle@gmail.com .
