As teenagers go through middle and high school and become more independent, figuring out how to support them through school can be confusing.  Should I help with homework?  How much structure do they need?  How can I advocate for them with the school?  This workshop will help answer some of these questions.  Eliza Wagner Srestha of ES Tutoring & Consulting, a veteran educator with 17 years of teaching experience and an Ed.M. in Curriculum and Teaching, will help you understand how to navigate the ups and downs of the middle and high school years as your child learns to be more independent.  We will talk about low-conflict ways to be involved in your child's homework, how to understand your child's learning style, how to create structure without stifling, the connection between self-esteem and academic performance, how technology can help and hinder learning, and how to create opportunities for healthy dialogue with your teen.  Come join us for an enjoyable Saturday coffee and discussion.   This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

There will be a free screening tonight of a documentary called "Sense the Wind."  Blind sailors race across open water learning not to fear what they cannot see, on boats or on land.  Life turns unpredictable as the wind when one of them gains something far more valuable than a trophy and msut learn to live and to sail with a new sensibility.  "Sense the Wind" is a journey led by four blind sailors - Matt, Nancy, Philip and Inky as they train and compete at the U.S. Blind Nationals and press towards the Blind Sailing Worlds in Japan.  They compete despite the risk of a falling boom, a boat collision or falling overboard.  On the water, teamwork and intuition take over.  Disabilities are no longer the focus.  Between regattas, life takes a turn when one of them gains more than a trophy and must learn to live and sail with a new sensibility.  The film has been made in close collaboration with our four principle characters and numerous sailors, along with input from advisers in the adapative sports, disability communities.   Please come and experience this unique story. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

If you've read a Miss Marple mystery or watched "Murder She Wrote," then you've experienced a cozy mystery.  Meet six of the top cozy mystery writers (they call themselves the "Wicked Cozies") at the library today starting at 2 PM.  They'll talk about how they write their cozy mystery novels...fun page-turners that take place in a small community with amateur detectives who solve the crime.  Each of these authors has found her own niche, and will share how they own experiences shaped their cozy sleuths.  Milton's own Hallie Ephron, who writes creepy suspense novels, will moderate the panel.  The "Wicked Cozies" are: Jessican Estevao (the "Change of Fortune Mysteries"); Sherry Harris (the "Sarah Winston Garage Sale" series); Julie Hennrikus who also writes as Jullianne Holmes, J.A. Hennrikus, and Julia Henry ("Chime and Punishment"); Edith Maxwell who also writes as Maddie Day (the "Quaker Midwife Mysteries" and the "Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries"); Liz Mugavero ("Pawsitively Organic Mysteries"); and Barbara Ross ("Maine Clambake Mysteries" series).   Hallie Ephron writes suspense novels and loves reading cozies.  She is the New York Times, Amazon, and USA Today bestselling author of suspense novels.  Her new novel, "You'll Never Know, Dear" tells the story of a little girl's disappearance and the porcelain doll that may hold the key to her fate.  Reviewers call her page turners "deliciously creepy," "Hitchockian," and "unputdownable."  She is a four-time finalist for the Mary Higgins Clark Award.   Come and enjoy this fun presentation!  It is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Photographer and teacher Barry Pell will host a talk called "A Year in Chile." Chile is the most remote country on the South American continent.  It occupies a narrow slice of land squeezed between the south Pacific Ocean and the towering and rugged Andes Mountains.  The lecturer and his wife chose Chile's capital, Santiago, to live, to teach English, and to explore the country's culture, landscape and people for one year.  In this presentation, he will take you on a journey from the parched dunes of the Atacama Desert in the north, through the fertile wine valleys, and into the south's stunning lake region, massive glaciers and fjords.  The program will be accompanied by Mr. Pell's photography of a country he considers to be South America's most beautiful.  Please join us for this fascinating event.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.

Come share your writing with others here at the library, no matter how accomplished you may be!  Stop by and spend some time with experienced writing instructor Betty Siegel.  Ms. Siegel has taught in the College of Liberal Arts and Science at Quincy College in the areas of ESL, Oral Communication, Vocabulary, College Study Skills, Reading, Basic Composition, Critical Thinking, and more.  She is also a professional tutor, and a writer with stories published in Camper's Monthly, Downeast, and Yankee.    She brings her critical eye combined with a warm sense of humor to this workshop to help writers of all ages and skill levels improve their work.  Some topics covered each session may include a review of the writing process and content; short written exercises to practice the various types of creative writing; an introduction to the use of "hooks;" and ways to organize what you write.  Work on your own stories and get great feedback and inspiration in this ongoing program, which will meet twice a month on Wednesday nights this Fall.  This is the last session of this program for Fall 2017.   The program is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

misc_none 7:00 PM  -  8:00 PM Author Ted Reinstein and New England's General Stores     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757, x. 3

"Chronicle" host Ted Reinstein returns to the Milton Public Library and brings his newest book:  New England's General Stores.
Explore the fabric of America over hot coffee and penny candy. Step through the wooden doors of a New England general store and step back in time, into a Norman Rockwell painting and into the heart of America. New England's General Stores offers a nostalgic picture of this colonial staple and, fortunately, steadfast institution of small towns from Connecticut to Maine. This is where children of each generation take their first allowance to buy their very own penny candy. Locals have swapped stories at these counters from gossip to whispers of revolution. In tough times, the general store treated customers like family, extending credit when no one else would. Stubborn as New Englanders themselves, the general store has refused to become a mere sentimental relic of an earlier age.

Ted Reinstein has been a reporter for "Chronicle," WCVB-TV/Boston's award-winning--and America's longest-running, locally-produced--nightly news magazine since 1997.

Copies of Ted's books will be available for purchase and signing.
The program is proudly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

Come and hear an interesting one-hour weather program with film clips, given by Will Broussard, the Education Coordinator for the Mount Washington Observatory in North Conway, NH.  An infamous place of extremes, 6,288-foot Mount Washington, New Hampshire has been captivating audiences for hundreds of years.  While many places on Earth experience weather, few are inhabited by humans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Mount Washington Observatory has been operating a continously-staffed scientific outpost on this remote peak since 1932, providing the Observatory many remarkable stories and an intimate knowledge of the mountain.  Through the years, the hardy men and women of the Observatory have experienced white-out blizzards, stunning 110-mile vistas, and everything in between.  They have survived a 231 mph wind gust, endless days of disorienting fog, and snow drifts more than 20 feet tall. They have worked with scientists and celebrities, students and snow rangers.  They have amassed one of North America's longest continuous climate records, and developed an intimate understanding of the place known as the "Home of the World's Worst Weather."  Join us to learn more at this fascinating program at the library.  The event is free and open to the public and is kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

An informal knitting group will meet at the library which offers an opportunity for people to get together, bring a project to work on (either for 20 minutes or the whole group meeting) and have friends nearby to ask questions when they need help.  The first 30 minutes are devoted to help with your project - the last hour is devoted to social knitting.  Knitters and all other fiber artists are invited to attend!  Questions!  Interested in being included on the Email notice for the gatherings?  Contact Nina Zonnevylle at nzonnevylle@gmail.com .

Proudly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.
