Milton Public Library and the Milton Art Center (MAC) are pleased to present an exhibition of MAC affiliated artists at the Wotiz Gallery.  The Town of Milton has a vibrant and rich arts community, with a multitude of professional artists working in a wide range of mediums. This exhibition of 18 artists affiliated with the MAC is representative of this range of talents, and includes works in pastel, oil, acrylic, collage, printmaking and photography.

Artists included in the show are: Carol Abram, Robert Brodesky, Holly Burns, Joyce Caggiano, Erin Donnellan, Sue Hoy, Jennifer Hughes, Rose Gates, Laurinda O’Connor, Donna Morash, Beth Neville, Scott Nobles, Judy Phakos, Andrea Rex, Marjorie Saintil-Belizaire, Diane Reed Sawyer, Christine Schoettle, and Ian Torney.   The exhibition will run from December 2, 2016 to January 29, 2017. The gallery is open during regular library hours, which can be found on the library website at www.miltonlibrary.org or call Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, at (617) 698-5757 (Reference Department) for more information.   Join the artists for the closing reception scheduled for January 19, 2017 from 6-8pm.

The Milton Public Library is a vital resource in the community for information, education, and literature that is accessible to all, while the Milton Art Center has established itself as a vibrant community center for the arts offering classes, exhibition space, and concerts. This exhibition of MAC member artists is conceived as an intersection of the goals and values of both organizations.

In conjunction with this show, the Milton Art Center Gallery is also hosting a Small Works Sale, a holiday show featuring small works at tempting prices. The Opening Party is December 9,
6-9, and is free and open to the public. Exhibition dates for Small Works are December 10 to December 23. For more information, visit www.miltonartcenter.org

misc_none 6:30 PM  -  8:30 PM Tuesday Night at the Movies: The Big Short     Tell a Friend
    Contact: Jean Hlady   (617) 698-5757

Tonight there will be a free showing of the film "The Big Short" starring Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, and Marisa Tomei.  The financial meltdown of 2005 is the topic of this movie and three separate but parallel stories are told.  Michael Burry, a bizarre autistic-like stock-picking genius, and the first to realize that the market's housing boon is based on a "house of cards" sham; Mark Baum, self-loathing fictional character whose firm picks up insider trading information from a wrong number phone call; Jarred Vennet, a smart-aleck broker who confirms the onimous suspicion; and Charles Gellar and James Shipley, small-time players who hit it big.  It is rated R for pervasive language and some sexuality/nudity.  This is a true story and is based on the book by Michael  called The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine which was published by W.W. Norton in 2010.   This film program is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is free and open to the public.  The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes.  Do not miss this viewing if you have not seen this great Academy Award winning film.  It won in 2016 for "Best Adapted Screenplay" and "Best Motion Picture of the Year."

Join Ms. Eliza for some tips and tricks for making your test prepreation study skills more effective! Please read her description below for more details. See you there!

Many students sit down to “study” for a test without ever learning what that really means. In this workshop students will learn strategies to help them perform better on tests, including learning about their own learning styles and understanding more about how the brain processes, remembers, and retrieves information. Students will learn how to use a two-column note-taking template, how to use multi-sensory input to aid memorization, how to practice time management strategies during and when studying for tests, and how to sort through large volumes of information to know what materials to study. By the end of this workshop students will have a variety of tools they can use to make their studying more effective and more efficient. Open to 6th-12th graders.

The fun film "Hello My Name is Doris" will be shown tonight in a free screening.  It stars Sally Field, Max Greenfield, Tyne Daly and more.  When Doris Miller meets John Fremont, sparks fly - at least for Doris.  She lives alone in the cluttered house she shared with her late mother  When Doris begins showing up at John's regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends and her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and familiy, who believe she's making a fool of herself over a guy half her age.  This is a winning comedy-drama built around one of cinema's most endearing leading ladies.  Sally Field proves more than capable of delivering Showalter-level goofiness while giving the film it's heart.  This is a brave little film that shows it's never too late to come of age.  It is rated R for language and the running time is 90 minutes.  It is not suitable for children.   You should enjoy this entertaining movie, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library.

In a collaborative project each child will make a circular drawing representing their family’s country of origin, using colors and shapes from that country’s flag(s). Each drawing will be cut into 4 squares. Your child will receive one square of their artwork to take home. After the class, all of the remaining squares will be mixed and reassembled into a large paper quilt. Feel like your essay writing could use some help? Have no fear... Ms. Eliza is here!  Please read her description below for more details.. See you there!

This workshop covers the basic steps of writing an effective essay: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising. Open to 6th-12th graders, students will learn how to structure a persuasive argument, use evidence to support their ideas, organize their points in a logical order, use a formal academic tone, and proofread for grammatical errors. By the end of the class students will have created a template for essay outlines, and they will take home an essay-writing checklist that they can use independently with future writing assignments. Students should bring a tablet or laptop or paper and a writing utensil.

Note to parents: please send an animal that can spend the whole night - perhaps not the favorite lovey that cannot be parted with...

An informal knitting group will meet at the library which offers an opportunity for people to get together, bring a project to work on (either for 20 minutes or the whole group meeting) and have friends nearby to ask questions when they need help.  The first 30 minutes are devoted to help with your project - the last hour is devoted to social knitting.  Knitters and all other fiber artists are invited to attend!  Questions!  Interested in being included on the Email notice for the gatherings?  Contact Nina Zonnevylle at nzonnevylle@gmail.com .
