    The Mineola Library is proud to be a part of a nationwide initiative that promotes early literacy. "Born to Read" was created to reach out to new parents and their babies to support the sharing of books together. Mineola families with babies born anytime in the year 2013 or 2014 are invited to visit the Children's Room to receive the "Born to Read" welcome gift!

    Will you be entering grades 8-12 in September of 2014? Are you a good academic student looking to earn volunteer credit? Consider being a homework buddy to a younger student, in grades 1-7, where you can perform your volunteerism around your own schedule. A completed application includes a signed form and a recommendation letter from your school. Contact the Children's Room for more information.

    The Mineola Library, in partnership with the Family and Children's agency in Mineola, will be running a school supply drive to benefit the children in our community. From Monday, June 9 through Saturday, August 9, you may donate new, unopened, school supplies to our collection bin located in front of the Circulation desk. Suggested donations include: #2 pencils, spiral notebooks, construction paper, lined paper, scissors, glue/glue sticks, pocket folders, blue/black pens, rulers, calculators, and tissues.

    Did you know that children who read over the summer perform better when school resumes in the fall? Once again, the Mineola Library will offer the 2014 Collaborative Summer Reading program to entice children and young adults to read over the summer in order to keep up the skills they learned during the school year, encouraging them to become lifelong library users. Pick up an official reading log at the Children's desk. The more you read, the more prizes(while supplies last)you earn! In person only sign up will being on Monday, June 30 and run until Saturday, August 9 (sign up is continuous throughout the summer). The Summer Reading Club is open to children from birth through entering 12th grade.

    Do you like comics, science fiction, fantasy, steampunk, gaming, or anime? Then come join us at MinCon on Saturday, August 2, at 10-5PM! MinCon is a mini comic convention focusing on pop culture taking place at the Mineola Memorial Library. Admission is free of charge, and people of all ages are welcome! Events include: face painting, medieval demonstrations, samurai swordfighting, gaming, author/artist signings, panels, a concert, vendors/dealers, and more! Some children's events include: face painting with Elsa from "Frozen," guest author Sara Varon (Odd Duck, Bake Sale, Robot Dreams), voice actress Brittany Lauda (My Little Pony, and more!
