misc_none 6:30 PM Reflections on a Concentration Camp Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

Encountering Bergen-Belsen

Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp was liberated by the British on April 15, 1945.  It was a prisoner exchange camp until late in the war, when overcrowding led to massive malnutrition and epidemics. It is in this camp that Anne Frank and her sister, Margot, died in 1945.

Dr. David Meola visited the Bergen-Belsen camp this summer to identify English language resources for his students.  He compares his experience to an earlier visit and offers observations about the nature of the site, then and now.

Dr. Meola is Bert & Fanny Meisler Assistant Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of South Alabama. This program is sponsored by the Gulf Coast Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education and the Mobile Public Library.

It is in conjunction with the exhibit “Filming of the Camps: From Hollywood to Nuremberg,” on display at the History Museum of Mobile, August 29 through January 16, 2017. The exhibit is sponsored by the History Museum of Mobile, Memorial de la Shoah and SNCF (French National Railways).
