One day, Henry's son Stefan (Jackson Bews) traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, causing the two crazy teens to fall into forbidden love. Year later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora (Elle Fanning).

misc_none 6:00 PM  -  7:30 PM Southern Literary Trail - Reflections on Emma Langdon Roche Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

2015 Southern Literary Trail

Sylviane A. Diouf is an award-winning historian and curator at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library. Her acclaimed books include Slavery's Exiles: The Story of American Maroons and Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America.

For her research of the “Clotilda,” Diouf was affected and inspired by Emma Langdon Roche, a Mobile artist and writer who published a book in 1914 about her journeys and those of other enslaved African-Americans along the Gulf Coast. The writings of Roche influenced future novelist Zora Neale Hurston, who was born in Alabama near Auburn, and some of her paintings survive today within the collections of the Historic Mobile Preservation Society.

The Historic Mobile Preservation Society partners with the Southern Literary Trail along with the Mobile Public Library and the Mobile Arts Council for this presentation by Diouf, who will speak on Roche's influence. Dr. Kern Jackson of African-American Studies at the University of South Alabama will provide the introduction. This event is supported with a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, a state agency of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Admission is free. For more information call the Society at 251-432-6161 or the Mobile Public Library at 251-208-7097. For more information and full schedule of the Southern Literary Trail events, go to http://www.southernliterarytrail.org/events.html.
