Monsters University

Take a trip back in time to when star Monsters, Inc. employees Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) and James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) were just two promising young students at Monsters University in this frightfully fun Disney/Pixar prequel. Long before they were lurking in closets for a living, Mike and Sulley were just two Scaring majors at Monsters University, dreaming of the day they would make children shriek in terror. When their heated competition to be the most fearsome in their class gets out of hand, however, Mike and Sulley find themselves ejected from the prestigious Scare Program, and they are forced to seek the aid of their oddball friends in order to get their education back on track.

The film runs 104 minutes and is rated G.

Groups must register.

Readings & Songs

Through a combination of readings and performances of original songs, Frye Gaillard and his musical friends examine the legacy of southern folk, blues, and country music through the lens of literature.

As Alabama native Emmylou Harris once put it, “People know how hard life is. They need music that will give words and expression to the feelings they have.” Gaillard is joined onstage with gifted songwriters Davis Raines and Pamela Jackson of Nashville, and Syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson who shares readings from Hank Hung the Moon, her tribute to the late Hank Williams, the unofficial poet laureate of country music and winner of a posthumous Pulitzer Prize.

“These great songwriters, including those with whom I’ll share the stage, explore the complexities of the human condition with all the depth and sensitivity of our novelists and poets,” Gaillard declares. “It’s an honor to present their music this way.”

Admission is free. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Mobile Public Library. For more information please call 208-7097.

That Darn Cat

Though overlong even for a Hayley Mills vehicle,That Darn Cat is an expert blend of laughs and suspense. The eponymous feline is D.C., a Siamese belonging to sisters Hayley Mills and Dorothy Provine. One evening, D.C. comes flouncing home with a lady's wristwatch attached to her neck. The watch contains an unfinished plea for help scribbled on its back, written by Grayson Hall, a bank teller held captive in a neighboring house by robbers Neville Brand and Frank Gorshin. Mills and Provine contact the FBI, who send agent Dean Jones (who's allergic to cats) to investigate. In their efforts to locate and rescue Hall and capture the crooks, Jones and the two sisters embark upon a series of slapstick misadventures involving an unending stream of top character actors.

Enjoy Historical fiction? Please come to our book club, A Page in Time.

This month's topic of discussion is Fever by  Mary Beth Keane.

Summary: In 1883, Irish immigrant Mary Mallon arrives in New York to pursue her dream of becoming a cook. Success seems within reach when she's hired by a wealthy Manhattan family, but quickly recedes when her employers fall violently ill. She flees, but the pattern repeats itself and the death toll rises until the New York Department of Health catches up to her. As an asymptomatic carrier of salmonella typhi, the strain of bacteria responsible for typhoid fever, Mary appears healthy but is capable of infecting others. Dubbed "Typhoid Mary," the city's notorious patient zero is placed under quarantine and spends the rest of her life alternately campaigning for her freedom and, despite the danger to all involved, attempting to return to the work she loves.

This month's topic of discussion is The Outcasts by  Kathleen Kent.

Summary: A taut, thrilling adventure story about buried treasure, a manhunt, and a woman determined to make a new life for herself in the old west. It's the 19th century on the Gulf Coast, a time of opportunity and lawlessness. After escaping the Texas brothel where she'd been a virtual prisoner, Lucinda Carter heads for Middle Bayou to meet her lover, who has a plan to make them both rich, chasing rumors of a pirate's buried treasure. Meanwhile Nate Cannon, a young Texas policeman with a pure heart and a strong sense of justice, is on the hunt for a ruthless killer named McGill who has claimed the lives of men, women, and even children across the frontier. Who--if anyone--will survive when their paths finally cross? As Lucinda and Nate's stories converge, guns are drawn, debts are paid, and Kathleen Kent delivers an unforgettable portrait of a woman who will stop at nothing to make a new life for herself.
