misc_none 7:00 PM Israel: The Best of Times, The Worst of Times Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

In several ways it is the worst of times for Israel – facing likely existential nuclear threat from Iran, constant rockets from Islamic fundamentalists and a possible threat from ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

And yet Israel has emerged as a global hi-tech power, well integrated in the world economy, developing strong relations with Russia, China and, for the first time ever, gaining support from the Sunni Arab states.  Which is it?

Dr. Jonathan Adelman, editor, consultant in international affairs, and professor of International Studies at the University of Denver, will present a realistic, yet hopeful, view of Israel’s future in the world.

Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). One day, Henry's son Stefan (Jackson Bews) traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, causing the two crazy teens to fall into forbidden love. Year later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora (Elle Fanning).

Enjoy Historical fiction? Please come to our book club, A Page in Time.

This month's topic of discussion is The Outcasts by  Kathleen Kent.

Summary: A taut, thrilling adventure story about buried treasure, a manhunt, and a woman determined to make a new life for herself in the old west. It's the 19th century on the Gulf Coast, a time of opportunity and lawlessness. After escaping the Texas brothel where she'd been a virtual prisoner, Lucinda Carter heads for Middle Bayou to meet her lover, who has a plan to make them both rich, chasing rumors of a pirate's buried treasure. Meanwhile Nate Cannon, a young Texas policeman with a pure heart and a strong sense of justice, is on the hunt for a ruthless killer named McGill who has claimed the lives of men, women, and even children across the frontier. Who--if anyone--will survive when their paths finally cross? As Lucinda and Nate's stories converge, guns are drawn, debts are paid, and Kathleen Kent delivers an unforgettable portrait of a woman who will stop at nothing to make a new life for herself.

Enjoy Historical fiction? Please come to our book club, A Page in Time.

This month's topic of discussion is The Good Lord Bird by  James McBride.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on children's author Chris Van Allsburg's modern holiday classic of the same name, The Polar Express revolves around Billy (Hayden McFarland), who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so, what with his family's dogged insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is all just a myth. This all changes, however, on Christmas Eve, when a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night, promising to take him and a group of other lucky children to the North Pole for a visit with Santa.
