    Contact:    732-683-8980

Dr. Philip Wolfson, author of the groundbreaking techno thriller, Faces Tell All: When Match Makers Turn Spy Catchers, will give a presentation about the topic of facial recognition technology, as he introduces us to his novel.  He explains:  “Big Brother could soon be watching you with sophisticated spy cameras: revealing not only who you are but also what you’re about: your physical and emotional health as well as your actions and intentions. And Faces Tell All relates how it all could happen."

"This means matchmakers and potential employers could determine from your face and body language whether you are habitually happy or sad, stressed or relaxed, vibrant or sluggish; while law enforcement and national security professionals would be looking to spot deceit, guilt or fear."

Faces Tell All is the world’s first work of fiction devoted to face scanning technology; the plot involves a face-reading app intended for the dating crowd which due to its potential for espionage attracts the CIA and Chinese Intelligence—who then battle for the coveted technology. The book also illustrates the power of facial imagery on mass audiences, in an imagined demonstration of computer re-created history enhanced by hypnotic cinematography.

Faces Tell All should attract followers of cinema, media, fact-based fiction, international politics and computer technology as well as students of social psychology and multiculturalism.  Read the book, but also browse the website, philipwolfson.com, comment and join the conversation about faces and related topics.

THE SHREWD MECHANICALS Touring Company presents Verily, Madly Thine

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has launched a new summer touring company called The Shrewd Mechanicals. The work of this tight-knit ensemble of young professionals has been met with much acclaim in their debut season and we are delighted to announce their performance!

This performance will focus on the special brand of temporary madness that overtakes people when they fall madly in love!  Verily, Madly, Thine will highlight a wonderful array of moments from Shakespeare’s plays as well as selections from more contemporary authors who have been inspired by The Bard. Verily, Madly Thine also features a delightful sprinkling of music. Fall in love with this entertaining collection of scenes inhabited by the victims of Cupid’s arrows.

Don’t miss this wonderful quartet as they bring to life the joy, wit, poetry, and music of the world’s greatest playwright — and those he’s inspired.

Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Registration not needed. . Video Recording is not allowed.
We request that attendees do not hold or reserve seats for others.  Library staff reserves a number of seats for a limited time before performance.

Blake Patterson, bassoonist, engineer, and mathematician, displays his amazing handiwork in these uniquely handcrafted segmented wood bowls.  Largely self-taught, Blake draws on his home-maintenance skill to improve the bowl-making process, along with ideas and advice from experienced turners and books. Some of the fun of turning bowls is creating “jigs” that make the process safer, faster, and more accurate.  It takes Blake 10 to 30 hours to complete one bowl.

Go back in time! Enjoy these illustrations by Richard Cali that visually depict the lyrics of The Beatles, along with a few original portraits sprinkled in. These little works of art were all digitally created on an iPad Pro, with flourishes, swirls and colors that are very reminiscent of rock 'n' roll's greatest era... the swingin' 60s!

On exhibit for the month of August in the library Meeting Room.

Richard Cali is a local graphic artist. An advertising art director by day, his love for music and illustration takes up his spare time. He recently began illustrating on an iPad Pro, using the Procreate app to develop a new series of works. An avid music fan, The Beatles are his favorite group, and these new illustrations are based on his love of that music. Rich finds lyrics and songs that say something to him visually, then illustrates the lyrics digitally in a fluid, flourish-filled style that is very reminiscent of the 60’s rock and roll era. Most of his drawings are black and white with a splash of color, while others are developed in full, vivd color. Some are fun and whimsical, some are serious. The portraits sprinkled in alongside the illustrations are rich with characters he has developed. Rich’s style of illustration is something to see, pieces that are clever, whimsical, and fun. Come take a look and go back in time!

Meet the artist at a reception on Thursday, August 8 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, where Mr. Cali can explain how he uses the computer to create his works of art.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong). Directed by David F. Sandberg. Starring Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, and Asher Angel.

Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History by Keith O'Brien

Between the world wars, no sport was more popular, or more dangerous, than airplane racing. While male pilots were lauded as heroes, the few women who dared to fly were more often ridiculed—until a cadre of women pilots banded together to break through the entrenched prejudice.

Fly Girls weaves together the stories of five remarkable women: Florence Klingensmith, a high school dropout from Fargo, North Dakota; Ruth Elder, an Alabama divorcée; Amelia Earhart, the most famous, but not necessarily the most skilled; Ruth Nichols, who chafed at her blue blood family’s expectations; and Louise Thaden, the young mother of two who got her start selling coal in Wichita. Together, they fought for the chance to fly and race airplanes—and in 1936, one of them would triumph, beating the men in the toughest air race of them all.

This book discussion will be moderated by Colts Neck Librarian Stephanie Laurino. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend, however registration is preferred. Stop by or call the library to reserve your copy of the book today.

This timely drama stars Academy Award ® nominee Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) and Academy Award ® winner Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).  Based on a true story, the film centers on the unlikely relationship between Ann Atwater (Henson), an outspoken civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis (Rockwell), a local Ku Klux Klan leader who reluctantly co-chaired a community summit, battling over the desegregation of schools in Durham, North Carolina during the racially-charged summer of 1971. The incredible events that unfolded would change Durham and the lives of Atwater and Ellis forever.  Directed by Robin Bissell. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Babou Ceesay, Anne Heche and Wes Bentley.

    Contact:    732-683-8980

Go back in time! Enjoy these illustrations by Richard Cali that visually depict the lyrics of The Beatles, along with a few original portraits sprinkled in. These little works of art were all digitally created on an iPad Pro, with flourishes, swirls and colors that are very reminiscent of rock 'n' roll's greatest era... the swingin' 60s!

On exhibit for the month of August in the library Meeting Room.

Meet the artist at a reception on Thursday, August 8 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, where Mr. Cali can explain how he uses the computer to create his works of art.

This review is  from Rotten Tomatoes:

In The Public an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness, and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

Everybody has a superhero inside of them, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's case, by shouting out one word, this streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into an adult superhero, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart, inside a ripped, godlike body, he revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! But he'll need to master these powers quickly to fight the deadly forces of evil. Directed by David F. Sandberg. Starring Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, and Asher Angel.

Tommy Orange’s shattering novel follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to each other in ways they may not yet realize. There is Jacquie Red Feather, newly sober and working to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene, who is pulling his life back together after his uncle’s death, has come to work at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil has come to perform traditional dance for the very first time. Together, this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American—grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism. Hailed as an instant classic, There There is at once poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, utterly contemporary and always unforgettable.

This book discussion will be moderated by Colts Neck Librarian Stephanie Laurino. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend, however registration is preferred. Stop by or call the library to reserve your copy of the book today.

    Contact:    732-683-8980

For early Americans, autumn was a season of hard work.  Neighbors joined together to help each other during harvest time. Many hands were needed to butcher, preserve and prepare foods. School was canceled for days in order that children could help their parents with the harvest chores. The fruits of one's labor were now to be realized. It was also a time of feasting and recreation. Learn how our forefathers (and mothers) prepared for the long winter ahead while celebrating the harvest season.

Presented by Judith Krall-Russo, Food Historian and Certified Tea Specialist.
