flags_usa.png American Flag Disposal Box Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Colts Neck branch of the Monmouth County Library system has a Flag Disposal Box located in the lower level lobby. Proper disposal of the American flag is a sign of respect. It honors our history, the people who fight to protect our freedom and is an homage to the reverence for our great nation. When a flag is worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country and should be retired and disposed of properly.

Please drop off flags during library hours.

The World War II Era Studies Institute and The Monmouth County Library System is presenting a series of programs to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of America at War, 1943.

Woodrow Wilson and America's First Attempt at  New World Order          Presented by  Paul Zigo  & Paul Frisco

America’s first effort at establishing a new world order on behalf of a troubled world was the vision President Woodrow Wilson put forth at the Versailles Peace Conference in the spring of 1919. Historians view this as a failed effort because the U.S. did not join the League of Nations after World War I. This presentation will contend that Wilson did succeed in fostering a new world in Europe that despite World War II and the Cold War is in place today. A Europe at peace with itself is the result.

Paul Zigo is the director of the NJ based World War II Era Institute, dedicated to furthering knowledge about the WW II era and the war’s impact on history.  He authored and edited  Witnessing History: The Eisenhower Photographs, a publication featuring all the photographs of General Dwight D. Eisenhower 1944-1945.   Zigo authored and published the book The Longest Walk, the amazing story of the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy France, June 6 – July 18, 1944.  Professor Zigo was an Associate Professor of History, Brookdale; a former Director, Center for World War II Studies, and a founding member, National Museum of the US Army.

Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen

Follows a Viet Cong agent spying on a South Vietnamese army general and his compatriots as they start a new life in Los Angeles in 1975.

"A profound, startling, and beautifully crafted debut novel, The Sympathizer is the story of a man of two minds, someone whose political beliefs clash with his individual loyalties. In dialogue with -- but diametrically opposed to -- the narratives of the Vietnam War that have preceded it, this novel offers an important and unfamiliar new perspective on the war: that of a conflicted communist sympathizer."  -- from the publisher

This debut novel was the winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Copies of the book are available at the library's circulation desk for this discussion.

Drawing on the diaries of Queen Victoria, less than a month after her eighteenth birthday, Alexandrina Victoria became Queen of Great Britian and Ireland.  The Teenage Queen Victoria startled everyone by abandoning her first name in favor of Victoria, sleeping in a room apart from her mother, resolute about meeting with her ministers alone and not impressed by her cousin Albert the last man she would want for a husband.

FRANKENSTEIN!   IT'S ALIVE!   A Staged Radio Presentation

Celebrate the Bicentennial Anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with Raconteur Radio's LIVE!  radio drama interpretation! Featuring: Laurence Mintz, Shawna Lagan and Michael Jarmus, with Alex Dawson

Join us as we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of this great classic.  Enjoy the superb staging by Raconteur Radio as they put on an old=fashioned radio play.  come dressed as the Creature, or the Doctor, or ... Not! it is up to you, but do come to this enjoyable enening as we turn the lights down and the "Radio" on!

Two centuries ago, a teenage genius created a monster that still walks among us.  Few creatures of horror have seized readers' imaginations and held them for so long as the anguished "wretch" of Mary Shelley's Modern Prometheus.  The story of Victor Frankenstein's terrible creation and the havoc it caused has enthralled readers, listeners, and viewers for generations.  Considering the novel's enduring success, it's remarkable it  began as a mere whim of Lord Byron, who, along with Mary and her then lover, Percy Shelley, was summering on the shores of Lake Geneva. "We will each write a ghost story," Byron announced to his friends, when continued rains kept them indoors.  At this challenge, Mary Shelley began work on a "ghost story" that was to evolve into the most celebrated horror novel in literary history.

Raconteur Radio  troupe presents  radio plays or audio narrative, what some call an "ear movie," which is a story told through dialogue, adding theatrical lighting, vintage commericials, Golden Age Radio Equipment, period costumes, and extensive sound effects!

Raconteur Radio stages theatrical presentations of vintage radio plays, classic works of literature/film, and pop culture parodies for live audiences at traditional and improvised venues throughout the Tri-State area.  For more info, visit www.RaconteurRadio.com

This 50th Anniversary Program is Generously Sponsored by the Friends of Monmouth County Library

Although Bobby Darin has been gone for almost 40 years, his ongoing ageless talent has withstood the test of time. This charismatic, multi-talented entertainer had an amazing range with Rock, Smooth Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Country and Folk music. He learned to dance, play drums, guitar, piano, vibes and harmonica. Sammy Davis Jr., another multi-talented performer, was quoted as saying "Bobby Darin was the only person I never wanted to follow" after seeing him perform.

Phil Bruschi takes you through the early years of Darin's musical career, who influenced him as a singer/songwriter, the different styles of his music, his nightclub act, changes he went through in the 60's with performing. Phil performs many of Darin's biggest hits.

"As Long As I'm Singing" is the name of a song by Bobby on an early album which professes his love for singing. Mr. Darin remains forever in our memory because of the body of work he left us. His fans will always be thankful as long as Bobby is still singing.

Join us for an afternoon of music with Phil Bruschi. Phil will be singing and educating you on the music of James Taylor & John Denver. He has had a long career in the entertainment business and it started at age nine when he first studied percussion as a drummer.  Over the years, Phil has played all types of music from jazz to rock.

The music of James Taylor and John Denver continues to entertain large audiences with their record sales even today. Both singer songwriters have carved out their own fan base over the years, with extraordinary numbers. Taylor still writes, records, and performs to sold out audiences all over the world. Denver, who died tragically in a plane crash in 1997 at the age of 53, left a legacy not only as a musician, but as an active environmental humanitarian. Although their musical styles were somewhat different, they had more in common than it appears.

Registration is not needed for this event but seating is on a first-come first-serve basis.
