flags_usa.png American Flag Disposal Box Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Colts Neck branch of the Monmouth County Library system has a Flag Disposal Box located in the lower level lobby. Proper disposal of the American flag is a sign of respect. It honors our history, the people who fight to protect our freedom and is an homage to the reverence for our great nation. When a flag is worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country and should be retired and disposed of properly.

Please drop off flags during library hours.

How do we fulfill our conflicting duties as father, husband, and son; wife and mother; child and adult? How can we claim our own identities when our lives are linked so closely to others? These are the questions at the heart of Jonathan Safran Foer's first novel in eleven years - a work of extraordinary scope and heartbreaking intimacy.

Unfolding over four tumultuous weeks in present-day Washington, D.C., Here I Am is the story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis. As Jacob and Julia Bloch and their three sons are forced to confront the distances between the lives they think they want and the lives they are living, a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a quickly escalating conflict in the Middle East. At stake is the meaning of home - and the fundamental question of how much aliveness one can bear.

World War I Centennial Film, Lecture and Discussion Series

Today's film: The Last Day of World War I (2004/NR/ 47 min) (c) History Channel

At 11am on November 11, 1918, World War I ended, victory was assured and final territory agreed upon.  How is it possible, then that more soldiers died on this day than on D-Day?

Based on Joseph Persico's book 11th Month, 11th Day, 11th Hour: Armistice Day, 1918, World War I and It's Violent Climax, The Last Day of World War I focuses on the little-known events of the war's Armistice Day, revealing the outrageous excuses Allied leaders found to send 13,000 men to their deaths against a defeated enemy.  Some leaders desired promotion, others retribution, while one commander chose to capture a town solely so that he could bathe.  Despite the devasting human toll, nothing was gained and the territories taken on this day were eventually returned to Germany.

This series is hosted by Neil O'Connor and Martin Spindel.  Each program  will have a brief introduction and be followed by a Q & A.

Our thanks to the Friends of the Monmouth County Library for their support of this program.

The Warren Chiasson Trio presents a Tribute to Chuck Wayne.

Warren Chiasson, vibraphonist, author, teacher, is a highly regarded musician in the jazz world who has been called "one of the six top vibraphonists of the last half century" by the New York Times.  Originally a member of the George Shearing Quintet, he has emerged as his own man with a distinctive four-mallet technique that he weaves into a percussive, melodic style.

Today, Warren will be joined by guitarist Gene Bertoncini to celebrate the music of Guitarist Chuck Wayne, one of the first jazz guitarists to play in the bebop style, later developing  definitive systematic method still followed today. Chuck and Warren  were part of the George Shearing Quintet and made the "Point Counerpoint" album together.

Concert is free for all to attend.  Entrance  doors open at 12:30pm.  Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  We request that attendees do not hold or reserve seats for others. Library staff reserves a number of seats for a limited time before performance.
