    Contact:    1-866-941-8188

The Monmouth County Library and the Jersey Shore Poets will present the 8th annual celebration of poetry for National Poetry Month, Poets Live! this April.  Just for fun, we decided to include limericks this year.  These little poems are fun to read and fun to write.

Limericks have five lines.  Lines one, two and five have 7-9 syllables, and rhyme.  Lines three and four have 5-7 syllables and rhyme with each other.  The rhythm (meter) and 'music' of the lines are consistent.

Submit your original limericks!  Poems will be divided into two categories:  Young People (under 18 yrs of age) and Adult (18 and older). Poets may submit up to three limericks.  Members of the Jersey Shore Poets will review the limericks and select the winners and runners-up to be read by their authors at the formal part of the Poets Live! program in April.  The reviewers will look for technically correct, original, and generally appealing poems.

Send your limericks to: kavagliano@monmouthcountylib.org, or by US Mail to Limerick Challenge, c/o Monmouth County Library, Eastern Branch, 1001 Route 35, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.  Be sure to put your name, address, age and phone number on each poem.  Poems must be received electronically, or postmarked, by March 1, 2019.  Authors must agree that any work sent to us may be shared with the general public.

Selected limericks will be posted at the Library for all to enjoy. All limerick writers are encouraged to read their poems during the open mic portion of the day. For more information, contact Kim Avagliano (kavagliano@monmouthcountylib.org) at the Library.

Photographs by Joseph Meacham on exhibit all month.

From the Artist:  "I grew up several miles south [of Asbury Park] in a middle class suburban beach community.  Just a twenty minute bus ride from my home, Asbury Park was the innocent arcade of my 1950s childhood and the raucous hub of music and surfing of my 60s adolescence.  It was a social landscape I associated with excitement, independence and freedom.  All that changed in the mid 1970s.

"By 1974, Asbury Park, scarred by race riots and economic distress, was slowly crumbling into oblivion, taking the ghosts of its past with it.  The amusement park rides and boardwalk attractions were still there, but the life energy of this once vibrant beach town was gone and the future was growing darker.

"Effigy: Ghosts of Asbury Park" is my reflection on those times and what became of this place.  It's a historic record and a personal metaphor, colored now by the patina of time.  Although the imagery is a mixture of nostalgia and sadness, I choose to think of it as the falling leaves that have served as the fertilizer for the renaissance of Asbury Park today."

This engrossing play explores the long and fruitful relationship of two towering figures of the modern American theatre—Tennessee Williams and his famous agent, Audrey Wood. Based on Miss Wood's memoir this story dives into the life of the young Tennessee Williams and his agent-to-be. You'll hear of his fateful meeting with the remarkable woman who was to first recognize his potential as a playwright and who was to become his guiding genius as his career developed.

Meet Photographer Joseph Meacham and view the exhibit "Effigy: Ghosts of Asbury Park."

Mr. Meacham writes: "I came to this place as a child, a teenager, an adult, and an artist.  These images reflect a time between 1974 and 75.  The place had become a ghost town, but no one had told the ghosts.  They still wandered the streets, worked the arcades, frequented the peep show and drank in the bars.  The duality of the place was palpable, an effigy of itself."

Mr. Meacham's photographs will be on exhibit all month.  He will present a program about his work on Thursday, March 7, at 11:00 am.

And then a surprise arrives at his door.

Gemma is Benedict’s audacious teenage niece—the daughter of his estranged brother, Charlie. The two Stone brothers had a falling out and haven’t spoken in almost two decades, since Charlie left for America. Reckless and stubborn, Gemma invites herself into Benedict’s world and turns his orderly life upside down. But she might just be exactly what he needs to get his life back on track…

It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Have you always wanted to write a book?  Have aspirations to be a published author?  Looking for some writing tips and guidance?

Join us as Francine Garson shares her own personal experience in becoming a published author.  She will discuss the inspiration and genesis of her novel, THINGS, as well as some basic writing tips on character development, point of view, showing vs. telling, dialogue, and research.

THINGS is a New Jersey shore-based novel that tells the story of Jenny Gilbert, a young and successful college advisor who is secretly a hoarder and a collector, albeit a very neat one.  As a former military brat, she is on a mission to find and reacquire the relics of her childhood that she was forced to leave behind with each of her family's moves.  Jenny has rented a second apartment to accomodate her obsession.  But as she tries to hide a complicated web of secrets from the man she's falling in love with, she becomes enmeshed in a tangle of lies.  When Hurricane Sandy is headed directly for both of her apartments at the shore, Jenny finds herself in a truly desperate situation.

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

Taking place in Nigeria, it's the story of Yejide and Akin--a young married couple who are experiencing fertility issues. When the in-laws’ solution is a second wife, they conspire separately to save their relationship, with devastating consequences. The couple’s efforts to disentangle their true desires from the ones tradition and society have foisted upon them is what imbues Stay with Me with unexpected power, and heart.

Photographer Joseph Meacham will discuss his work, "Effigy: Ghosts of Asbury Park" which is on exhibit for the month of March in the Library meeting room.  The talk will touch on the history of Asbury Park, specifically from 1955 to 1980.  He will discuss his work in detail, addressing its visual language, meaning and technique.  Mr. Meacham will also show some related work from that time and talk about his influences.  He will finish by showing some current work, the artwork he lives with in his home, and will answer questions from the audience.

Joseph Meacham has a BFA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.  He has exhibited in group shows from Maine to Seattle.

Today immigration is at the forefront of our national conversation. For some, it's a security issue. For others, a humanitarian crisis. This program will address the humanitarian crisis this issue presents - and it will be done through poetry.

The poetry in this presentation was written to put a human face on the humanitarian crisis at our border by giving testament to the suffering that these migrants face in their native lands, the trials they face as they travel north, and the challenges they encounter in their new land.

The poems read in this presentation will be from two collections by Christopher Bogart: 14: Antologia del Sonoran, a chapbook published in October of 2018 and available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and at the event, and Severed Dreams, an as yet unpublished work.

Reading the poems will be the poet himself along with two other readers: Jesse Bridges and Jose Palma.  Mr. Bogart is a winner of the 2018 Poetry Box Chapbook Prize.

Music from Scotland and Ireland

One of Scotland’s best known harp players, William Jackson from Glasgow, will present a multi-faceted concert of traditional Scottish music as well as his own compositions on Celtic harp and Scottish small pipes.

William Jackson was one of the founding members of the Scottish super group, Ossian, in the late 70s, which had an enormous influence on the sound of traditional Scottish music. He made the Scottish harp, or clarsach, one of the cornerstone’s of the band’s arrangements with bagpipes, strong rhythm guitar and fiddle. He recorded seven albums with Ossian and has subsequently recorded ten solo CDs. He and Ossian were inducted into Scotland's Traditional Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Somerset Folk Harp Festival in 2016.

Mr. Jackson has gained a substantial reputation as a composer, known for combining traditional and classical music, with such major works as The Wellpark Suite, St. Mungo, Inchcolm, and A Scottish Island to his credit. In 1999 his composition 'Corryvreckan' from the album Inchcolm was included on Fiona Ritchie's favorites collection, "The Best of The Thistle & Shamrock, Volume 1." His “Land of Light” composition won the international Song for Scotland competition in 1999, was widely acclaimed and performed for the opening of Scotland’s first parliament in 300 years. Additionally he has done scores and performances for a number of BBC programs, the History Channel and films.

"Harvest of Despair: The Man-made Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine" documents the Ukrainian terror famine of 1932-33 that caused the death of seven million people in Ukraine.  Using interviews with survivors and scholars to supplement rare photographic evidence, it established that the terror famine was deliberately created by the Soviet Government as part of Stalin's decades-long effort to destroy the widespread Ukrainian resistance to Moscow's policies of collectivization and cultural destruction in Ukraine.  A powerful film, "Harvest of Despair" provides rare insight into one of the 20th century's least-known but most vicious genocides.

The program will include an introduction of the film by Dr. Yuri Mischenko, a reading of the Recollections of Holodomor Survivor Nina Pinczuk Kowbasniuk, and a Q&A at the end of the film.

"Harvest of Despair: The Man-made Famine of 1932-33 in Ukraine" (55 minutes) is Directed by Slavko Nowytski, (c)1983, International Historic Films, Inc.

Bernard Dickman has been gardening for more than sixty years. He was selected as Master Gardener of the Year for 2000 and is a lifetime Master Gardener. He has an extensive rose garden and lots of experience wildlife-proofing his garden. Other gardening passions are vegetables and perennials.
