elect_camera.png Exhibit: Pinhole Camera Photography Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    732-683-8980

Pinhole Camera Photography by Walter Kasian.  On exhibit in the lobby display cases for the month of May.

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens, but with a tiny aperture -- a pinhole.  Light from an object passes through the aperture (pinhole) and projects an inverted image on film or photographic paper (which becomes the 'negative') on the opposite side of the box.  This simple camera provides the photographer with an interesting, challenging, and rewarding picture making experience.  Exhibit includes pinhole cameras and photographs of many local scenes.

Walter Kasian is a retired electronics engineer who graduated from the Cooper Union School of Engineering (NYC) and whose career encompassed various technical and management positions within the US Department of Defense.  Photography has been a hobby since his teenage years, but taken more seriously when he pursued a photography degree from Brookdale Community College.  There he chose pinhole photography as the focus of a special project and immediately became enchanted at the simple beauty and the surreal quality of the images that it can create.

From that special project he began an avid pursuit of pinhole photography.  He applied his engineering skills to design and build ten different  pinhole cameras including steroscopic and panoramic cameras.  In addition to photography, Walter enjoys ethnic folk dancing, creating art, gardening, playing his concertina, and travel.  He and his wife Luba are residents of Little Silver, NJ, and have two grown children, Stefan and Larissa.

elect_camera.png Photography Exhibit: The Viewfinder N.2 by Debora S. Bruno Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    732-683-8980

The Viewfinder N.2 is a selection of photographs that incorporates different styles, from black and white to infrared, traditional color film to digital images.  The artist believes that beauty is found not only in daily subjects such as flowers, sunrises, seascapes, etc., but that one can explore and discover amazing and gorgeous images through simple subjects such as the textured elements of old leaves, architecture, snapshots from friends, still life objects (cups, apples) and more. The artist wishes to share her conception with the viewers and hopes they can travel through these interesting subjects.

On exhibit in the library meeting room for the month of May.

Meet the artist at a reception on Saturday, May 11th, from 1:00 - 4:30 pm.

Debora Santiago Bruno appreciates art in general styles.  Her love for photography is one of the most important aspects of her life.  Her work includes portrait, still life, nature and scenery, black and white, infrared, color and computer enhanced photography.  Landscapes and architecture subjects are her favorites.  When she is shooting these elements, she tries to capture the best quality of light as possible to produce a result that is remarkable.  Debora has exhibited in many places including the Middletown Public Library, Brookdale Community College, Guild of Creative Art, Art Alliance, Freehold Art Society, Monmouth County Clerk's Office, Monmouth Museum, and more.  She had her work published in the Collage Magazine and received honorable mentions in the MCAC Juried Art Show in 2003 and the Student Art Show at Brookdale Community College in 2005 and 2006.  She was awarded First Place for best alternative category for her piece entitled "Empire State Building" at the Photography Juried Show Open Eyesights, March 2007, and First Place in the 15th Juried Art Show at the Guild of Creative Art, October 2007.

On the Open Road With Walt Whitman, Guided by poet Flora Higgins

"Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road." Walt Whitman, "Song of the Open Road".

Journey with us as we "take to the open road" with Walt Whitman through his poetry. Whitman was born on May 31, 1819. We will celebrate his 200th birthday by enjoying some of his wonderful poems.

Reading poetry by Walt Whitman is often regarded as inspirational because he has many suggestions for self-improvement. His poetry is also educational: he is considered America's most influential and revolutionary poet. His work marks the transition from the transcendental movement to the realism movement.  We also appreciate his poetry because it is uplifting. And, he is great fun to read!

"Allons! The road is before us!" Walt Whitman, "Song of the Open Road".

    Contact: Reference Staff    732-683-8980

Advance care planning can be daunting -- not only because it is difficult for many of us to think about aging and death, but also because there are a lot of terms and forms that can complicate the process.  Conversation of Your Life is a program to help you let family, friends, and doctors understand your wishes through advance care planning.  This series aims to provide all the pertinent information you may need to communicate them ahead of time, saving your loved ones from having to make emotionally taxing decisions on your behalf when the time comes.

You are encouraged to attend all of the sessions in the series, but are not required to do so.  Seating is limited.  To reserve your space, please register below or call  732-683-8980.

All sessions are 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.

April 26 - Starting the Conversation: Personal Values.  What you want and how to get it.  Our program begins with a discussion on personal values and understanding what is important to you at the end of life.

May 3 - First Friday for Seniors: Managing Your Finances.  Elder law is a specialty focused on issues affecting the aging population.  This can include guidance on issues related to healthcare, long term care planning, preservation/transfer of assets, and Medicare/Medicaid.

May 10 - Geriatric Care Managers: Personal Advocates in a Complex System.  Geriatric Care Managers specialize in aging and managing senior care.  Learn more about this important advocate.

May 17 - Advance Care Planning: Why is it important? Which is right for me?  Learn the importance of advance care planning and the variety of documents available.  Discover which document best serves your needs.

May 24 - Hospice: The Greatest Benefit Medicare Offers  Gain a comprehensive understanding of hospice, one of the Medicare program's best, and least utilized, benefits.  Learn about hospice philosophy and levels of care.  There will be discussions with a variety of agencies.

May 31 - Everything You Wanted to Know About Planning a Funeral (but were afraid to ask).  You have options! Come and learn about the interesting and ever-changing options in funeral planning.  Discussions with Funeral Consumers Alliance of Princeton.

June 7 - The Next Steps: An Empowered Consumer's Action Plan.  A session for review and reflection.  What are your next steps? Having shared this journey for the past 6 weeks, let's hear from you!

The Conversation of Your Life (COYL) program is presented by volunteers in the health care field, and is run by the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute in 14 New Jersey Counties.  The goal of COYL is to encourage more individuals in New Jersey to engage in fruitful dialogue -- the Conversation of Your Life -- to let individuals' friends, family, or doctors understand and respect their end-of-life wishes through advance care planning.  COYL is generously supported by The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.  To learn more, visit: njhcqi.org/COYL.
