    Contact:    732-938-2300

The Howell Library is pleased to present the documentary Destiny's Bridge, followed by a Q and A with homeless advocate Minister Steven Brigham.

This film chronicles the fate of Minister Steve and 80 other people living in tents in some local woods.  Police raids and arrests brought uncertainty to these off-the-grid residents who were staking claim to the unused public land that they had been living on for six years.  All these homesteaders wanted was to create their own self-sustaining tiny house community.

The encampment in Howell currently has 13 residents, each with their own living quarters. This is a transitional camp with a one-year stay. Residents are required to work inside the camp if they are unemployed.  No drugs or alcohol are allowed.  The residents are required to take care of their own garden plot and tend their own chickens for eggs. Programs to provide professional job training and to supply solar panels for electrical needs are under consideration.

Minister Steve has worked with the homeless for 16 years, including ten as the head administrator/supervisor of a homeless shelter. An ordained minister since 2003, his training includes a degree from Zarephath Bible Seminary, Somerset County. Minister Steve received the New Jersey State Governor's Jefferson Award for public service from NJ Lieutenant Governor Kim Guagdano in 2012.

Being healthy is vital to everything we do. Our day-to-day living deeply depends on how we fuel our bodies. One of the best ways to get healthy is to know what’s in your food and the best way to do that is to cook it yourself. Eating right for your body is the single most important thing you can do to ensure a vibrant, healthy life. We are what we eat, how we move, and what we think. In nourish, you’ll find recipes from some of the brightest local minds in healthy eating. They all have a passion for creating masterpieces using local, sustainable - and most important – real whole food. We encourage you to roll up your sleeves, take one recipe at a time, and play with your food. Your body will thank you!

Integrative health counselors Debbie Peterson and Wendy Bright-Fallon first met in 2007 at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) where they received their health and nutrition certifications. Debbie is a wife, mother of two and a retired college instructor. Wendy is a wife and former corporate executive. Both Debbie and Wendy counsel individuals, families and athletes in their quest for looking, feeling and performing their best. In addition to their private practice (www.NourishCoaches.com), they run workshops, do regular speaking engagements, produce a bi-weekly podcast: Nourish Noshes, and provide an online nutrition program. Wendy and Debbie are passionate about helping people shift to eating closer to nature. They believe that one of the tools to leading a healing lifestyle includes playing with food. This inspired them to collaborate on writing nourish – a community created cookbook with 135 simple and healthful recipes with pictures included to whet your appetite.

Join us for this informative talk with authors Debbie Peterson and Wendy Bright-Fallon as they discuss their second-edition cookbook, Nourish. Registration is required by calling the library at 732-431-5656, stopping in, or signing up below.

Join the NJ Studies Academic Alliance as they welcome Author and Historian Joanne Hamilton Rajoppi as she introduces her newest book.

Ms. Rajoppi, a former journalist, is a New Brunswick historian. She chronicled the military service of her great grandfather during the Civil War in her book New Brunswick and the Civil War: The Brunswick Boys in the Great Rebellion, based on the letters Grandpa Hamilton wrote to his family.  Her new book follows with the NJ Hamilton women after the War, entitled Northern Women in the Aftermath of the Civil War: The Wives and Daughters of the Brunswick Boys.  Northern Women tells the story of the perseverance and stamina of women facing an altered world, and the legacy, dreams and hopes that these women left their children in the context of a rapidly evolving America.

Ms. Rajoppi is a contributor to Meet Your Revolutionary Neighbors: Crossroads of the American Revolution, is a trustee and officer of the Union County Historical Society and serves as Union County Clerk.

This program is co-sponsored by New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance. The NJSAA promotes the teaching and researching of New Jersey studies.

An electrifying debut novel set amid the heated conflict of Seattle's 1999 WTO protests.

On a rainy, cold day in November, young Victor—a nomadic, scrappy teenager who's run away from home—sets out to join the throng of WTO demonstrators determined to shut down the city.

Over the course of one life-altering afternoon, the fates of seven people will change forever: foremost among them police Chief Bishop, the estranged father Victor hasn't seen in three years, two protesters struggling to stay true to their non-violent principles as the day descends into chaos, two police officers in the street, and the coolly elegant financial minister from Sri Lanka whose life, as well as his country's fate, hinges on getting through the angry crowd, out of jail, and to his meeting with the President of the United States.  When Chief Bishop reluctantly unleashes tear gas on the unsuspecting crowd, it seems his hopes for reconciliation with his son, as well as the future of his city, are in serious peril.

In this raw and breathtaking novel, Sunil Yapa marries a deep rage with a deep humanity. In doing so he casts an unflinching eye on the nature and limits of compassion, and the heartbreaking difference between what is right and what is possible.

One snowy night, a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time -- from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains --  this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes tender, Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

To Celebrate Build a Better World Summer Reading

The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey's Next Stage Ensemble  will perform William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1592.  In The Taming of the Shrew, the confident yet surly Petruchio tries to tame the wealthy, eldest daughter Katharina, the supposed shrew.  After being deprived of food and sleep, Katharina is finally "tamed" and bends to Petruchio's will.

Other plays and films which have been produced based on this play of Shakespeare were Catharine and Petruchio (1954),   Kiss Me Kate (1953),  Taming of the Shrew (1967), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), and Deliver Us from Eva  (2003).

Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is New Jersey's only professional theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare's canon and other classic masterworks.  Next Stage Ensemble, featuring young actors from across the US, was created to foster the work of early career actors and to train them in ensemble-based performance techniques. Participants work with The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey resident directors and guest directors on a fully developed production of an abridged classic play.

Entrance doors open at 6pm.  Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Video Recording is not allowed. We request that attendees do not hold or reserve seats for others.  Library staff reserves a number of seats for a limited time before performance.

Linda Turash Productions presents four actresses performing a series of monologues, both comedic and dramatic, as well as several two- and three-person scenes. The show features excerpts from The Rose Tattoo, Sweet Bird of YouthThe Little Foxes, Plaza Suite and Last of the Red Hot Lovers, among others. With a slight change in costumes and props, the actresses will bring each portrait to life. From a mother trying to explain the facts of life to her son, a hysterical scene at a DMV office, to the portrait of a queen refusing to have her marriage annulled, there is something for all theater-lovers.

I am Woman is based on a one-woman show called I am Woman - Help! written by Turash and performed throughout New Jersey and at several off-Broadway locations.
