Blake Patterson, bassoonist, engineer, and mathematician, displays his amazing handiwork in these uniquely handcrafted segmented wood bowls.  Largely self-taught, Blake draws on his home-maintenance skill to improve the bowl-making process, along with ideas and advice from experienced turners and books. Some of the fun of turning bowls is creating “jigs” that make the process safer, faster, and more accurate.  It takes Blake 10 to 30 hours to complete one bowl.

On display in the library lobby through the month of August.

Go back in time! Enjoy these illustrations by Richard Cali that visually depict the lyrics of The Beatles, along with a few original portraits sprinkled in. These little works of art were all digitally created on an iPad Pro, with flourishes, swirls and colors that are very reminiscent of rock 'n' roll's greatest era... the swingin' 60s!

On exhibit for the month of August in the library Meeting Room.

Richard Cali is a local graphic artist. An advertising art director by day, his love for music and illustration takes up his spare time. He recently began illustrating on an iPad Pro, using the Procreate app to develop a new series of works. An avid music fan, The Beatles are his favorite group, and these new illustrations are based on his love of that music. Rich finds lyrics and songs that say something to him visually, then illustrates the lyrics digitally in a fluid, flourish-filled style that is very reminiscent of the 60’s rock and roll era. Most of his drawings are black and white with a splash of color, while others are developed in full, vivd color. Some are fun and whimsical, some are serious. The portraits sprinkled in alongside the illustrations are rich with characters he has developed. Rich’s style of illustration is something to see, pieces that are clever, whimsical, and fun. Come take a look and go back in time!

Meet the artist at a reception on Thursday, August 8 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, where Mr. Cali can explain how he uses the computer to create his works of art.

With electric lighting at our fingertips, we may think the night sky only has value for amateur astronomers or casual stargazers. Yet, when we look at the night sky, we're seeing the same sky our ancestors -- and those who came before them -- gazed upon.

Why is it important for us to feel connected to the night sky? Why should we find the time to better observe the stars? Where could we go for that experience?

Dr. Sarbmeet Kanwal has the answers to these questions and more.  Join us as he explains the importance of the night sky and its darkness and how ambient light is affecting the natural world -- and us.

Dr. Kanwal holds a Ph.D. in theoretical particle physics from California Institute of Technology.  After retiring from a long and successful career with Bell Labs, he began teaching astronomy and modern physics at Brookdale Community College, where he was recognized as best adjunct of the year in 2016. He recently has lectured on topics such as black holes, the Higgs boson particle, the search for extra-terrestrial life, the big bang theory and quantum physics.

This review is  from Rotten Tomatoes:

In The Public an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness, and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

Everybody has a superhero inside of them, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson's case, by shouting out one word, this streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid can turn into an adult superhero, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart, inside a ripped, godlike body, he revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! But he'll need to master these powers quickly to fight the deadly forces of evil. Directed by David F. Sandberg. Starring Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, and Asher Angel.
