Self-taught artist Michael Fazio shares some of his favorite collage pieces.  Carefully and lovingly constructed, see if you can find the hidden connections and meanings in his colorful and delightful creations.

Artist's Statement: "I am proud to have my exhibit at the library.  I have done greeting cards for friends and family while also drawing, over the years, fine line sketching.  This show has so far given me full reign and happiness all the way.  With this exhibit, I've tried to make my art as bold and verbal as able.  The joy of seeing my designs akin to this makes me feel very happy indeed.  Finally, I feel that I have come closer to the ideas that I have been searching for.  Enjoy!"

On display in the library lobby exhibit cases throughout the month.

lib_book_mag 2:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Author Visit and Lecture: The New Jersey Pine Barrens: Fertile Soil for Crime Fiction Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    732-938-2300

Less than 100 miles from Manhattan, less than 50 miles from Philadelphia, less than 20 miles from the Howell Library, you'll find more than one million acres of pine forests and cranberry bogs.  Towns have grown up in and amongst the forest, and some are now thriving cities, but, even today, there is vast acreage in the Pine Barrens that remains virgin forest. Deep in the forest, amongst the pitch pines and the cranberry bogs, the fragrant berries and the abandoned cemeteries, strange things abound.

Jeff Markowitz is the author of the Cassie O'Malley mysteries, an amateur sleuth series set deep in the New Jersery Pine Barrens.  He will discuss Pine Barrens history, geography and folklore and why the Pine Barrens offer fertile soil for crime fiction.

Jeff was 50 when he discovered he had a flair for murder.  Who is Killing Doah's Deer introduced readers to tabloid reporter and amateur sleuth Cassie O'Malley.  Cassie returned in A Minor Case of Murder and again in It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder. After penning three amateur sleuth mysteries, Jeff decided to embrace his dark side. His most recent book, a black comedy, Death and White Diamonds won the Lovey Award for Best Thriller and the Davey Award for Best Mystery.

He currently serves on the Regional Board of Directors of the New York Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and coordinates the Leon B. Burstein/MAZNYScholarship for Mystery Writing.

America At War - 1942

The World War II Era Studies Institute is presenting a series of lectures, during this 75th Anniversary Year of the entrance of the United States into World War II.

Bataan, When Men Have to Die - The Fall of the Philippines 1942.  Presented by Paul Zigo

The Bataan Peninsula, a strip of land 25 miles long and 20 miles wide, on the Philippine Island of Luzon became the last refuge for the troops defending the island against a japanese invasion, December 1941.  Over 67,500 Filipino soldiers and 12,500 US Service Personnel starved of adequate food and supplies rendered a desperate yet hopeless defense ultimately surrendering on April 9, 1942.  Some 78,000 men were then herded out of the peninsula in what became known as the brutal Bataan Death March.  The presentation will cover all aspects of the four month long battle and its impact on the history of WWII.

The World War II Era Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge about the WW II era and the war’s impact on history.  Paul Zigo is the director of the New Jersey-based World War II Era Studies Institute. He authored and edited in 2009 Witnessing History: The Eisenhower Photographs, a publication featuring all the photographs of General Dwight D. Eisenhower taken by his personal wartime photographer, Al Meserlin, 1944-1945.  Recently, Zigo authored and published the book The Longest Walk, the amazing story of the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy France, June 6 – July 18, 1944.  Professor Zigo was an Associate Professor of History, Brookdale; a former Director, Center for World War II Studies, and a founding member, National Museum of the US Army.

Presenters from the World War II Era Studies Institute  will present programs at Library Headquarters and Eastern Branch during September and October .

America At War - 1942

Battle for Midway - Crucial Turning Point in the Pacific War Presented by Paul Frisco, Kevin Kincherf

A turning point in a war or campaign is where one combatant experiences a reversal in fortune.  The combatant looses the initiative, suffers loss of freedom in a theater of war and the opponent assumes the offensive.  In WWII, there were five key turning point battles, each of which enabled the Allies to mount offensive operations to achieve strategic objectives and ultimately attain victory.  The Battle of Midway in June 1942 was one such battle where after the American military assumed the offensive in the Central Pacific.

The World War II Era Studies Institute is presenting a series of lectures, during this 75th Anniversary Year of the entrance of the United States into World War II.

International Short Stories  "The Elephant Vanishes" by Haruki Murakami (Japan)

"The Elephant Vanishes" is a short story by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, included ina short story collection of the same name.  Murakami is known for his calm delivery of prose writing and his inside depiction of the Japanese world view.

This particular short story focuses on the protagonist's personal reaction to the presence - and then disappearance - of an old elephant in his hometown.  The elephant was a refuge from a defunt zoo, and the town council agreed to take on the elephant and provide for it, including food and a keeper.

lib_book_pencil 10:30 AM  -  12:00 PM Thursday Morning Book Discussion News of the World by Paulette Jiles Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

News of the World is an adventure story, filled with danger and incident; a western, meticulously researched and rendered; and a two hundred-page prose poem with poetry’s usual virtues of compression, resonance, beauty, and power. Set in post-Civil War Texas, the chaos of that place and time are vividly depicted, even as the story remains primarily one of character. Paulette Jiles has shown how rich and deeply imagined the historical novel can be.

It is 1870, North Texas, rainy and cold. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town giving readings from the latest newspapers, bringing the news of the world to isolated towns on the Texas frontier. In Wichita Falls, he is asked to return a captive girl to her relatives near San Antonio, 400 miles to the south. The old man and the ten-year-old start out on a hazardous journey, no less risky because the girl considers herself now a Kiowa and does not have the slightest desire to return. Bandits and Comanche raids and violent weather make as many difficulties as the ten-year old girl who can’t speak English, eats with her hands and knows how to use a revolver. In the end, he finds he must return her to relatives who don’t want her, even though he and the girl have become trusting friends. A story of courage and honor and the truth that these two things are often the possession of even the unlikeliest people.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet. So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio.  Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue.  But when Lydia's body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbiling them into chaos.  A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing. Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husband and wives struggle, all their lives to understand one another.
