flags_usa.png American Flag Disposal Box Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Colts Neck branch of the Monmouth County Library system has a Flag Disposal Box located in the lower level lobby. Proper disposal of the American flag is a sign of respect. It honors our history, the people who fight to protect our freedom and is an homage to the reverence for our great nation. When a flag is worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country and should be retired and disposed of properly.

Please drop off flags during library hours.

FALL INTO JAZZ Series with Jack Livingstone

From Sao Paulo, Brazil, Abelita Mateus is passionate about Brazilian Music. She studied classical piano in her teens, and gradually developed a passion for jazz. Living in New York since 2012, Abelita has become immersed in the jazz scene and is applying the “new sounds” into her own music, as a performer and composer.

Abelita brings us her newest project, Mixed Feelings,  and tells us it  "expresses my deepest feelings in a crucial moment of my life, using new sounds that I was so excited to explore at that specific moment. A mixture of excitement, sadness, saudades, happiness, failure, regret, luck- all of the things I was feeling at the time are in my music. And I’m very pleased to share it with you! Enjoy!”

Abelita  has performed recently at international venues including the Blue Note New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, and has been playing with world-class musicians such as John Lee, Claudio Roditi, Hermento Pascoal, Sharel Cassity, the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, Peter Slavov, Matt Marantz, Itaiguara Brandão,  Oleg Osenkov, Roger Squitero, Phillip Gillette, among others.

We thank the Friends of the Library for underwriting the maintenance of our Concert Grand Piano.

Today family burial grounds are truly endangered historic resources. However, these were once the most common form of burial place in the state. Monmouth County has several examples of these abandoned family burial grounds including the Polhemus Family Burial Ground tucked off Laird Road in Colts Neck.

Join The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee as they host a presentation on the Preservation of the Polhemus Family Cemetery - Circa 1732 to 1857, by the Society Of Archaeological Research (SOAR). The burial site has about 40 stones left, in which 15 of them predate 1800. This was the family burial ground of Daniel Polhemus.

An added feature will be speaker Dr. Gerry Scharfenberger as he tells you, "all you have ever wanted to know about cemeteries.”

Registration is not needed for this event but please take note seating is on first-come first-serve basis.

Remembering WWII - America at War - 1943

The World War II Era Studies Institute and The Monmouth County Library presents a continuing series of programs to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of America at War, 1943.

Invasion of Tarawa Atoll: Important Lessions Learned at The Start of the Central Pacific Campaign. Presented by Paul Zigo

A turning point is a point in a war or campaign where one combatant experiences a reversal in fortune. The combatant losses the initiative, suffers loss of freedom in a theater of war and the opponent assumes the offensive. A key turning point battle in the Pacific Campaign was the battle for the Island of Tarawa which enabled the Allies to mount offensive operations to achieve strategic objectives and ultimately attain victory. The presentation will relate all the details about this crucial battle and the lessons learned from this amphibious operation that had an impact on D-Day, 6 June 1944.

Paul Zigo is the director of the NJ based World War II Era Institute, dedicated to furthering knowledge about the WW II era and the war’s impact on history.  He authored and edited  Witnessing History: The Eisenhower Photographs, a publication featuring all the photographs of General Dwight D. Eisenhower 1944-1945.   Zigo authored and published the book The Longest Walk, the amazing story of the 29th Infantry Division in Normandy France, June 6 – July 18, 1944.  Professor Zigo was an Associate Professor of History, Brookdale; a former Director, Center for World War II Studies, and a founding member, National Museum of the US Army.

Our thanks to the Friends of the Monmouth County Library for their support of this program.

  • Required Minimum Distributions and what type of plans require them
  • Calculating RMDs
  • Planning for monthly retirement withdrawals from your nest egg
  • How to potentially save taxes and avoid taking RMDs

Even if you still have time before you turn 70 1/2, proper planning today can help you prepare for when the time comes.

    Contact: Reference Staff   732-431-7220 x7222

This lecture is about an artist with monumental creativity and an exceptional capacity for invention but who was also at the center of great tragedy. In effect, 20th century art belonged to Picasso. His personal life and the women in it go a long way toward answering the mystery of his creative process.

Picasso had seven significant women in his life that importantly influenced his art. You will be introduced to each one of them. Women to Picasso were like paint to his brush. He needed them to inspire him. Every time a new woman entered his life his art changed. But even his adoring mother warned, “My son lives only for himself. No woman could be safe and happy with him.” It was a very prophetic statement. Basically, he was incapable of love. Hear how Picasso would abandon woman after woman and how his art was influenced.

Fred Dixon and his wife Martha began collecting art some 35 years ago. They have traveled to major museums in the U.S. and Europe and to the great cathedrals in Italy to view Renaissance and Baroque art. There were two years of study at the Barnes Foundation followed by a docent training course. Fred and Martha were docents at the Barnes for ten years. All of this culminated in the publication of Fred’s book “700 Years of Art History: Pre-Renaissance to Modernism.”  It will be available at the discounted price of $35 for this lecture.

During the Founding Era, much communication was through letters.  Dear John Adams tells the story of John and Abigail Adams through their letters.  Their letters convey their feelings about the country, the times and each other.

The program will also include other letters from the Founding Era and we will see how "ordinary" people talked about their lives and dreams during the time of the birth of our country.

Dear John Adams will be presented by the Dragonfly Multicultural Arts Center, a NJ threater group that provides performances that enlighten, entertain, and educate; and opportunities for development of new works.

This program is primarily intended for students in grades 6 and above, but all are welcome to this special presentation.

The Temporary Bride by Jennifer Klinec

The Temporary Bride is a beautifully written window into a world few of us have entered: contemporary Iran in all its complexity. Its sprawling cities and street-side eateries come to life, but most vivid is the portrait of ordinary Iranians: cooking, sharing , living in a world where Westerners are unwelcome.  A book for travelers - of the world and the senses.

Remembering WWII - America at War - 1943

The World War II Era Studies Institute and The Monmouth County Library System presents a continuing series of programs to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of America at War, 1943.

Guadalcanal was one of the turning points of World War II. Guadalcanal, a Japanese occupied island in the Solomon Island chain in the south Pacific, was invaded by a major US Marine force on August 7, 1942.  The bloody and protracted struggle for this steamy, malaria-ridden, rain-sodden island lasted for nearly six months, resulting in over 6,000 casualties, to include 152 battle deaths.  The battle was the first real test of land strength between Japan and the USA.  Seven major naval battles were also fought around the island.  Guadalcanal is now seen as a major turning point in the Pacific war from which Japan never recovered.  Come and hear why the battle was so vicious and why it had to be won. Come hear Professor Paul Zigo talk about this pivotal battle in the Pacific Theater.

Our thanks to the Friends of the Monmouth County Library for their support of this program.
