Guild of Creative Art Exhibiting Members Show

The top level of Guild membership is showcased in the meeting room of the Eastern Branch during the month of September. Painters will display their inspirational works in a mélange of media including acrylic, alcohol ink, mixed media, oil, pastel, sculpture and watercolor.

In 2010, the Guild of Creative Art proudly celebrated fifty years of service as the oldest and largest art community in New Jersey. Its founder, Yvonne Aubert, was a tireless visionary who purchased a five-car garage at the Guild’s present location at 620 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, in 1960.

Surrounded by fields, the area had yet to grow into a bustling neighborhood of shops and malls. Aubert converted the garage to a studio and exhibition hall and encouraged some of the county’s most notable artists to become charter members. At the time, local painters and sculptors had few venues to exhibit their work and no opportunities for study so Aubert’s inspired idea soon became central to the artistic community of Monmouth County. Over the years, after numerous alterations and additions, the Guild of today is twice the size of the original building, and its membership has expanded to over 400 artists and continues to grow. Located one mile south of Red Bank, the Guild is a member of the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and the Monmouth County Arts Council.

On display from Wednesday, September 3rd through Saturday, September 28th.

rec_paint_palette.png Art Exhibit: Soft Sculpture Dolls by Joan Gavornik Remind Me about this Event Download Event Info Tell a Friend

Soft sculpture is a specific type of creation consisting of soft cloth, foams and similar items that will work well according to what one is trying to achieve.  The outcome should be a supple but firm piece. In doll making, the art is trying to achieve the most solid but delicate finished piece for best results.

Joan Gavornik is raising the standard of eclecticism. She is an award-winning artist in soft sculpture, which now ranks among traditional art forms. Her soft sculpture dolls have been said to be the most original, most sought after and creative type of doll-making ever to be seen.  A number of Joan's dolls have been signed by the artists they depict.  She has appeared on the Jay Leno Show and on Entertainment Tonight with Chrissie Hynde from the rock band The Pretenders. She has made dolls for bands and entertainers of all types, in addition to private creations for various family members in all parts of the United States. Another love of Joan’s is music.  She is a prolific guitarist/songwriter and has placed 2nd in a writer’s competition on national radio. She has performed with many bands as well as doing session back up work.  All in all, Joan is a talented, one of a kind doll maker and music aficionado.

Meet the artist at a reception on Saturday, September 7th from 12:00 - 3:00 pm.     In addition, enjoy the soft, imaginative jazz music of Tommy and the Tomahawks from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, consisting of Tom Gavornik on acoustic electric guitar, Tony Cimorosi on bass guitar and Koko Bermejo on drums.  These accomplished musicians produce an innovative, brilliant and modern jazz sound.

For early Americans, autumn was a season of hard work.  Neighbors joined together to help each other during harvest time. Many hands were needed to butcher, preserve and prepare foods. School was canceled for days in order that children could help their parents with the harvest chores. The fruits of one's labor were now to be realized. It was also a time of feasting and recreation. Learn how our forefathers (and mothers) prepared for the long winter ahead while celebrating the harvest season.

Presented by Judith Krall-Russo, Food Historian and Certified Tea Specialist.

This program is sponsored in part by the Friends of the Monmouth County Library.

At one time, Vincent van Gogh told his brother in a letter that, since he had no children, he considered his paintings as his progeny.  A painter and a pastor, van Gogh produced more than 2,000 "brilliant children" in his lifetime.

Presenter and art historian Michael Norris will explore dozens of van Gogh’s works, with a focus on pieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  This overview of van Gogh's life experiences and how it influenced his art will lead to lively discussion, which will include the differences between experiencing original artwork versus reproductions.

About the presenter:
From an early age, Michael Norris discovered how powerful the influence of art can be.  He earned a BA in Classics from U.C. San Diego, and an MA in Classics and Ph.D. in Art History at U.C. Santa Barbara.  With over 20 years of teaching at the Cloisters Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other global lecture destinations, Michael "tries to find the story in the artwork" and share his appreciation with interested audiences.

This program is made possible by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities Public Scholars Project, which brings the humanities to locations throughout the state, allowing participants to exchange ideas and explore challenging subjects with nuance and complexity.

Monmouth County Runs Donation Drive for the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund

The Donation Drive lasts September 16 through October 16

Monmouth County is running a donation drive, spearheaded by Freeholder Deputy Director Lillian Burry, to support the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II Memorial Fund, a local organization that provides support to improve the morale and welfare of members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces as well as their families. The drive begins on Monday, September 16 and ends on Tuesday, October 16.

“I am always proud to partner with the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund – an extraordinary organization that supports our troops,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry. “The supplies that our Monmouth County residents collect will help brighten the holidays and express our deepest gratitude to the men and women in our armed forces who sacrifice so much to protect us.”

Collection boxes, where donations can be dropped, have been set up at several Monmouth County buildings.

The Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski II Memorial Fund was founded in 2006 to honor the life and memory of Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, who was one of four American soldiers killed by a roadside bomb during combat operations in Bayji, Iraq on Nov. 12, 2005. The officer grew up in Middletown.

Abstract Expressionism was born in the 1940’s in lower Manhattan.  It emerged out of years of despair from the Great Depression and WWII.  It moved the capital of the art world from Paris to New York.  Fred Dixon will present a documentary style lecture on the lives and art of the early champions of the movement – Jackson Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner, Willemm and Elaine de Kooning and two younger members Grace Hartigan and Helen Frankenthaler. Hear how art took over their lives and how none of them gave a whit about conventional mores.

Fred Dixon and his wife, Martha, both docents at the Barnes, have traveled to the major museums in the US and Europe and to the great cathedrals in Italy to view Renaissance and Baroque art. This culminated in the publication of Fred’s book “700 Years of Art History: Pre-Renaissance to Modernism.”  It will be available for purchase and signing at the discounted price of $35 following this lecture.

The great State of New Jersey is shaped by water from the Atlantic Ocean to the Raritan River, Lake Hopatcong to the Delaware Bay. Our lives, just like our geography, are shaped by water, too. Recreation, travel, water management and infrastructure in our communities, and economic impact and transportion: water is a part of our every-day lives.

What is your water story?

As part of building a statewide water story archive, the New Jersey Council for the Humanities is asking residents to reflect upon and share their perspectives and memories about water.  Howell Library is hosting this hour-long discussion for Monmouth County to capture stories about the ways water matters to New Jerseyans. What New Jersey water source or waterway is most meaningful to you? How do you want to preserve resources for the future?  Why? We want to know!

Each community conversation invites participants to share and/or listen to meaningful memories and experiences of water in New Jersey. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute their water story to a statewide public archive documenting personal connections to water and waterways in New Jersey.

Reservations are requested by calling the Howell Library at 732-938-2300.

Author Philip Wolfson will give a presentation about the topic of face recognition technology as he introduces his novel,  Faces Tell All: When Match Makers Turn Spy Catchers.  The novel is the first work of fiction to expose the growing threat of facial surveillance—now literally sweeping the world!

Dr. Wolfson’s interest in keen facial esthetics as a former dentist, his studies of Chinese face reading, and a mini career in medical writing, all fueled his fascination with science and culminates in this ground-breaking techno-thriller.

Faces Tell All traces the quest of a band of millennials—weary of the singles scene—to produce a face reading app that helps lonely hearts find the love of their lives, but which unexpectedly attracts the attention of the CIA and Chinese Intelligence.

(Not all uses of faces technology are nefarious, but all raise serious questions of intrusion and privacy—even the face reading app for the dating crowd imagined in Faces Tell All, where users could “size-up” potential mates or business associates.) Going far beyond mere facial recognition, Faces Tell All predicts plausible facial analysis, which reveals aspects of personality as well as physical and emotional fitness that would be of interest to employers and governments—“friendly” and otherwise.

Another dire implication of faces technology dramatized in Faces Tell All is the use of idealized or manipulated facial imagery, as in cinematography and media-driven propaganda. The book predicts possible digital re-creation of historical figures and events, thus permitting the re-writing of history.

Create your own fall magic by learning to paint vibrant florals including a pumpkin in this 2 hour hands-on workshop conducted by local artist, Som.  She will teach you the basics of painting loose florals in an easy, spontaneous way without the need for elaborate pencil sketches.  You also get to apply your skills with the creation of a fall wreath canvas piece to take home.

All materials provided.  Just bring along a cup for water, an old wash cloth, and an apron (optional).

Limited to 10 adult participants.  Registration required.  Please register below to reserve your seat.

Som Vanguri is a Morganville based artist who specializes in watercolor and acrylics.  Som has been painting since the age of 6 and is heavily inspired by nature and color.  She enjoys painting flowers, landscapes, house portraits and pet portraits, among other themes.  Som also creates miniature art jewelry, hand painted burlap accessories, note cards, and more.  One of her favorite techniques is using free flowing brush strokes without an elaborate sketch, as she feels this brings out the inner artistic expression to the fullest.

Som's work has been showcased at many art and craft shows and featured on blogs and in magazines. Her art brand is Peony Peacock Studio and can be found on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Make friends, talk about books, and read and learn in a relaxed community setting.  The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) offers an opportunity for adults and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to participate in a weekly book club.  The group meets Mondays at 7:00 pm to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour. Books are provided by the library.

We are also looking for Volunteers who would like to help facilitate the meetings.  If interested, please contact Kim Avagliano at the library, 732-683-8980.

Please register by calling 1-866-941-8188.
