holiday_civil_war_x American Flag Disposal Box Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend

The Colts Neck branch of the Monmouth County Library system has a Flag Disposal Box located in the lower level lobby. Proper disposal of the American flag is a sign of respect. It honors our history, the people who fight to protect our freedom and is an homage to the reverence for our great nation. When a flag is worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country and should be retired and disposed of properly.

Please drop off flags during library hours.

    Contact:    1-866-941-8188

Olga Kobryn, Pysanky Master Artist, will present an illustrated lecture on the art of Ukrainian embroidery.  She will cover the history and symbolism of the embroidery, as well as the many styles and how they differ, the types of stitches, and the contemporary use of Ukrainian embroidery design in clothing.  Examples of Ukrainian embroidery will complement the lecture.

Presenter Olga Kobryn has been decorating Ukrainian Easter eggs, the ancient art of pysanky, and doing Ukrainian embroidery since she was ten years old. Her aunt who emigrated from Ukraine to America in the early 1900’s taught her this ancient art and Ukrainian cross stitch embroidery.  Since those early years, Olga has shared her love for these Ukrainian traditions, by teaching her family, friends, and students, enabling her to share her cultural legacy.

In 2003, Olga was awarded the Master Artist of Pysanky status by the Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program of the New Jersey Council of the Arts.  More recently, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts awarded Olga a Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant to study the history and learn the skills of traditional Ukrainian Poltava Region embroidery under the tutelage of Master Artist, Helen Dobusz.

This “moving account of the depth of ordinary lives” (Library Journal, starred review) tells the story of a young Tasmanian girl and a Danish sailor and the brief encounter that leaves a lasting impact on both. Isla is struggling to learn what truly matters and whom to trust, while this modern Viking is searching to understand his past and to find a place in this world for himself. Though their time together is short, it is enough to change the course of both their lives.

Contact: Reference Staff   732-431-7220 Ext 722

"What if" scenarios are often suspect. They are sometimes thinly veiled tales of the gospel according to the author, taking on the claustrophobic air of a personal fantasia that can't be shared. Such is not the case with Philip Roth's tour de force, The Plot Against America. It is a credible, fully-realized picture of what could happen anywhere, at any time, if the right people and circumstances come together.

The Plot Against America explores a wholly imagined thesis and sees it through to the end: Charles A. Lindbergh defeats FDR for the Presidency in 1940. Lindbergh, the "Lone Eagle," captured the country's imagination by his solo Atlantic crossing in 1927 in the monoplane, Spirit of St. Louis, then had the country's sympathy upon the kidnapping and murder of his young son. He was a true American hero: brave, modest, handsome, a patriot. According to some reliable sources, he was also a rabid isolationist, Nazi sympathizer, and a crypto-fascist. It is these latter attributes of Lindbergh that inform the novel.

A Lecture and Discussion by Rev. Karen E Herrick, PhD

Sixty-six percent of widows experience apparitions of their departed husbands within the first year of death and seventy-five percent of parents who lose a child have this experience also during the first year of their loss. Many are afraid to tell about this for fear of mental instability.

A presentation on Near-Death Experiences will be given from the work of Dr. R. Moody and PMH Atwater. The main differences between a spiritual experience (SE) and a psychotic hallucination will be taught. After the educational presentation, attendees may ask questions and discuss their personal experiences.

Rev. Karen E. Herrick, PhD, has shared her clinical experience for 30 years from a Jungian perspective. She was ordained in the Interfaith Ministry in 1995. This ministry is to be actively involved in Spiritual Psychology, specifically in naming SEs and working with chronic grief. It is important to note that 40-50% of people in the United States are having these types of experiences that people are afraid to mention.

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus

One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world.  Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime.  Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.
