The mission is to honor the life and memory of U.S. Army Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski, II. The film will run 56 minutes and be followed by a question and answer period with Mr. Dudnick.

The Dream Lady of Wanalasset Revisited: Ocean Township Represented in Elsie Jane Wilson's 1918 Silent Film Adaptation of Margaret Widdemer's 1915 Novel Why Not?

Several correlations between fictional setting and local history suggest that in the 1915 novel Why Not? Asbury Park native Margaret Widdemer based her fictional community of "Wanalasset" on the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township. Three years later, her novel was adapted into a silent film The Dream Lady, by one of America's first female film directors, Elsie Jane Wilson. For the novel's readers, the film might have been the earliest film representation of a fictionalized portion of Ocean Township. Wilson's film has been unavailable for a century but was recently restored. We will consider the relationships among the novel, film, and local history as we enjoy a screening of the film.

Archives Week History Program (1 of 3) Introduction by Monmouth County Archivist Gary Saretzky.  

From the Pines to the Waves: Wealth, Leadership, and Historic Preservation. Dr. Walter D. Greason, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Counseling and Leadership, Monmouth University. 

New Jersey’s history hinges on the events in Monmouth County. Long before the Battle of Monmouth, however, the economic patterns of land-use and local governance established traditions that continue to shape the state in the twenty-first century. Few teachers and scholars have examined these patterns, but the emergence of the new history of capitalism since 2015 has excited the interest of historians, anthropologists, sociologists, journalists, and geographers. This presentation will explore the recent advances in the study of New Jersey across these disciplinary boundaries, featuring emerging insights from student researchers. Valuable to elected officials, policymakers, and educators, the successful opening of the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, a National Historic Landmark, will provide an important case study about wealth, leadership, and historic preservation in this region.

Carol Simon Levin will portray Lillian Feickert, president of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association from 1912-1920, to tell the story of the role of New Jersey women in the long struggle for woman suffrage. Two hundred and twenty five years ago, women had the right to vote in only one state--New Jersey--a right they would lose in 1807 and not win back for more than five generations. New Jersey's role in the struggle to regain that right is largely overlooked. Hear the stories of women with Jersey ties: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, Lucy Stone, Portia Gage, Victoria Woodhull, the Grimké sisters, and more. Together, these and other women (and their male allies) propelled woman suffrage past reluctant male voters and through state and national legislatures to the final success of the 19th Amendment.

American Women and Royal Marriages: New Jersey’s Real-Life ‘Lady Coras.’ Melissa Ziobro, Specialist Professor of Public History, Monmouth University. 

Royal wedding fever has been in the air since Great Britain's Prince Harry wed American actress Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018 but marriages between American heiresses and impoverished European nobles once happened by the hundreds during the Gilded Age. The marriages secured social status for "new money" American families often slighted by the established elites in their own country, while the infusion of American dollars allowed the impoverished nobility across the Atlantic to continue to maintain the lifestyles to which their families had been accustomed for generations. Professor Ziobro will discuss the so-called “dollar princesses” of the Gilded Age, to include Lady Monson (née Romaine Stone, daughter of General Roy Stone of Morristown NJ), Lady Roberts (née Elizabeth Marie LaRoche, daughter of William Tell LaRoche of Harrington Park, NJ), and Princess Miguel of Braganza (née Anita Stewart, born in Elberon, NJ), and more.

Archives Week History Program (3 of 3) Introduction by Monmouth County Archivist Gary Saretzky.  

Reclaiming Our Voice: New Jersey's Role in the Fight for Woman Suffrage. Carol Simon Levin, Actor and Storyteller. 

Carol Simon Levin will portray Lillian Feickert, president of the New Jersey Woman Suffrage Association from 1912-1920, to tell the story of the role of New Jersey women in the long struggle for woman suffrage. Two hundred and twenty five years ago, women had the right to vote in only one state--New Jersey--a right they would lose in 1807 and not win back for more than five generations. New Jersey's role in the struggle to regain that right is largely overlooked. Hear the stories of women with Jersey ties: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, Lucy Stone, Portia Gage, Victoria Woodhull, the Grimké sisters, and more. Together, these and other women (and their male allies) propelled woman suffrage past reluctant male voters and through state and national legislatures to the final success of the 19th Amendment.

This program is free and open for the public to attend, without registration. 

Bring the sculptor out in you! Children will learn how the Lenape, NJ’s indigenous people, lived long ago. We’ll talk about what the Lenape ate, how they made their clothes and homes, and the chores they performed. Kids will get to make their own Lenape-style clay pot, a coil pot! Come celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing with astronomer Kevin Manning and the Holmdel Library! 

Astronomy for Everyone: Size & Scale of the Universe is an exciting family program for ages 8 to 100+ about the universe from the very small to the very large. The program will include an exciting talk from astronomer, Kevin Manning, as well as video footage to fully engage the audience. Following this indoor formal presentation, we all go outdoors to view celestial objects in the night sky through a powerful hand-crafted telescope, such as the ice crystal rings of Saturn, craters on the Moon, etc. - weather permitting. 

Kevin Manning is a gifted astronomer, who has worked as a consultant with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory launch on the space shuttle with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and other ground-based observatories. Kevin won national and international awards in his field, was both a Wright Fellow and an Einstein Fellow, and did some work with Brookhaven National Laboratory.

When you experience the loss of a loved one, navigating through the maze of emotion, making ordinary decisions and finding a new rhythm to everyday can be stressful and overwhelming.  These workshops, led by Beth Stamp, support facilitator, may  provide an opportunity to share experiences, feelings and new ideas for moving forward, Beyond Bereavement.

Karen Apy, RN-BC CNLCP LNCC has been providing nurse consulting services for the past 35 years in various clinical areas including emergency medicine, rehabilitation, medical surgical, outpatient surgery, brain injury, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, case management, home health and long-term care. Her consulting services have included legal nurse consulting, life care planning, case management, adjunct professor, author, speaker, mentor, business development and marketing. The Golden Age of Operetta celebrates the rich melodies, romance and  gaiety that preceded the onset of a distinctly American musical theatre.

Before Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, Kern, Rodgers, Hammerstein and company, European operetta was filling the great European capitals with tales of exotic locales, derring-do drama, gorgeously lush melodies, romance, sentiment and color -- all at a fever pitch. Composed by classically-trained Europeans, these operettas would gradually evolve in the American Musical on this side of the Atlantic.

Join Fred Miller as he presents the history, biography and psychology of this evolution while sitting at a piano singing the superlative songs of his heroes. His "Lectures-in-Song"  combine his intellectual and musical passions into a joyful tribute to the boundlessly rich field of American Popular Song.

Join us in conjunction with our Every Bowl Feeds a Soul event as Carol Erickson will perform songs from the Great American Songbook on Saturday, October 19 at 2:00 pm in the lower gallery meeting room. She is a gifted storyteller who breathes life into the classics of composers such as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin and many others. 

She regularly performs in libraries, assisted living and nursing home facilities, senior centers, clubs and restaurants throughout New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Carol will be accompanied on the piano by Bob McHugh, who is extremely versatile and has performed in Count Basie Theatre, Lincoln Center, New York Public Library and the Newark Museum. Family support and a collaborative approach to identifying and treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury are crucial for both physical and mental health. The Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee of Manalapan (VAAC) and speaker, Vietnam Veteran Charles Wuth, MSW, LCSW, will offer general information about PTSD and TBI for veterans and families, including causes and symptoms, the best scientific research, overcoming stigma and shame, and getting the treatment needed. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to meet and speak informally with veterans' support organizations. 

This program is co-sponsored with Manalapan Township and The Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee of Manalapan (VAAC), who have created the Center for Veterans at Manalapan to help veterans - from any era - and their families readjust to civilian life and deal with any lingering issues from their deployment.

L'Aura Hladik Hoffman, of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society, NJ's largest paranormal investigating and training organization, successfully crams into each presentation her 20+ years' experience as a ghost hunter, researcher and author.  Along with her humor and animated delivery, the time flies by and people leave the presentation commenting about the fun they had and how they plan on sleeping with the lights on!

Make friends, talk about books, and read and learn in a relaxed community setting.  The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) offers an opportunity for adults and teens with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to participate in a weekly book club.  The group meets Mondays at 7:00 pm to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour. T'ai Chi Chih doesn't require a particular level of physical fitness or coordination. This class is for individuals over age 18.

Dan Pienciak, an accredited International T'ai Chi Chih Teacher and Trainer, has been practicing since 1995 and became an accredited instructor in 1997. He is certified in Seijaku, an advanced T'ai Chi Chih form.

The Battle of Brooklyn was the largest battle of the American Revolutionary War and took place just six weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Taking place on August 27, 1776, it resulted in a crushing defeat for George Washington and the Continental Army, and could have ended the American Revolution, if not for some providential circumstances.  It was the Continental Army's perseverance through unimaginable difficulties that allowed our forces to turn the tables on the British only four months later in Trenton, NJ.

This one-hour talk with many illustrative images, describes the background, details, and effects of the battle on a pivotal point in U.S. history.

This lecture will be presented by Barry Singer, who has followed his passion for history by teaching at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers University, Historical Society of Princeton, and other venues.

Heart Specialist Dr. Vivian Kominos visits to discuss the lifestyle of the world’s Blue Zones, areas where people live into old age with less heart disease and virtually no neurodegenerative disease! Since we are not in a Blue Zone, what can we do to have healthspan, not just lifespan? The topics of integrative medicine and genomics will be highlighted. A healthy heart leads to a healthy brain, body and spirit! 

Dr. Vivian Kominos, MD, FACC is a nationally recognized clinician and educator in integrative cardiology. She is a graduate of St. Louis University School of Medicine and is board certified in integrative medicine and cardiology. She has practiced cardiology for 30 years, concentrating on integrative medicine and cardiology for the past 12. Dr. Kominos is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM), University of Arizona School of Medicine, where she completed her fellowship in 2007. She is a founding member of the American Board of Integrative Medicine.

She authors textbook chapters and curricula for AWCIM on topics ranging from cardiovascular health and disease, nutrition, mind-body medicine, obesity, and women and heart disease.

Come join us for folk dancing at the library!  Selected folk dances will be taught and audience participation is encouraged.  

Folk dancing is a wonderful, joyful and uplifting way to exercise, socialize and communicate.  The melodies to which we move are breathtakingly beautiful.  The dances we do are from cultures around the world including Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and more.

We dance in circles, lines, couples and sets.  No partners or previous dance experience is necessary.  We recommend dressing casually and wearing comfortable shoes.  

Presented by Charles Gross and Walter Kasian of the Monmouth Folk Dancers. 

The Monmouth Folk Dancers dance every Tuesday evening from 7:30 - 10:00 pm at the Embury United Methodist Church, 49 Church Street, Little Silver.   A small fee includes dance instruction and light refreshments. The group is varied and includes singles and couples, young and old, a cross section of people united by a common love of dancing. 

See the display: Folk costumes, many collected by group members, will be on display in the library lobby for the month of October, and represent the original clothing from their country of origin.

Revel in the musical artistry of the prodigious cornetist Warren Vaché and his friends!

Warren first began playing piano in the third grade and then started trumpet in order to play in the fourth grade band in school. Moving ahead, he earned a degree in Musical Education from Montclair State, and it was there he began studying with famed swing era trumpeter Pee Wee Erwin. He had a long association with Concord Records, composed and played on the film soundtrack for The Luckiest Man in the World, and presently maintains a full schedule of recording, worldwide festival appearances, and performing in Broadway shows and clubs.
