Many people dream of escaping modern life. Most will never act on it—but in 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight did just that when he left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another person for the next twenty-seven years.

Drawing on extensive interviews with Knight himself, journalist Michael Finkel shows how Knight lived in a tent in a secluded encampment, developing ingenious ways to store provisions and stave off frostbite during the winters. A former alarm technician, he stealthily broke into nearby cottages for food, books, and supplies, taking only what he needed but sowing unease in a community plagued by his mysterious burglaries. Since returning to the world, he has faced unique challenges—and compelled us to reexamine our assumptions about what makes a good life. By turns riveting and thought-provoking, The Stranger in the Woods gives us a deeply moving portrait of a man determined to live his own way.

This book discussion will be moderated by Colts Neck Librarian Stephanie Laurino. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend, however registration is preferred. Stop by or call the library to reserve your copy of the book today.

Acing the Job Interview: Mock Interviews

Presented by Library Career Connections Staff

One of the best ways to prepare for a job interview is to participate in a mock interview.  Mock interviews provide an opportunity to practice your interview skills.  Your success in a job interview will depend largely on how well you prepare and perform.  This workshop will help you prepare for an interview by discussing key components to an effective mock interview, interview questions and answers, and participant responses to common interview questions.

This program is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

History in Monmouth:  Hamilton as a Soldier in the Revolution

Alexander Hamilton is best known for being the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and for his unfortunate duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. His military career, which brought him more good fame than his politics, is less well known. He was a skilled artillery officer early in the Revolutionary War, a key member of Washington’s staff at Monmouth, and an infantry commander at Yorktown. He even rose to the rank of Major General in 1798. Dr. David Martin will discuss Hamilton’s military career and assess it against his political career.

Dr. David Martin, the President of the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and an award winning author, teacher and lecturer, will offer new analyses of important individuals who helped shape Monmouth County.

It seems a new scam or fraud surfaces regularly, and those behind it may be out to get your personal information. Welcome to the Dark Web…. The Dark Web is said to be a breeding ground for organized crime, sex traffickers and hackers. (But it's also used by good actors such as whistle blowers and activists.) An individual's identity can be stolen and used on the Dark Web by bad actors. It is essential to be informed. Join Monmouth County Consumer Affairs Director Annmarie DeVito as she explores and explains the Dark Web and how those who use it can complicate the lives of average consumers. Her presentation will cover how to protect oneself from such scams and what to look out for.

Ms. DeVito has been director of the County's Consumer Affairs Department since 2011 and is a certified investigator under the State Attorney General's Office. Under her leadership, the Department and her efforts have been recognized for developing consumer outreach to community groups and schools on how to protect oneself from fraud and scams. Ms. DeVito organizes regular sessions for consumer advocates around the state to further their knowledge on the latest scams impacting individuals.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers

At the center of this 1940 masterpiece is the deaf-mute John Singer, who becomes the confidant for various types of misfits in a Georgia mill town during the 1930s. Each one yearns for escape from small town life. When Singer's mute companion goes insane, Singer moves into the Kelly house, where Mick Kelly, the book's heroine (and loosely based on McCullers), finds solace in her music. Wonderfully attuned to the spiritual isolation that underlies the human condition, and with a deft sense for racial tensions in the South, McCullers spins a haunting, unforgettable story that gives voice to the rejected, the forgotten, and the mistreated—and, through Mick Kelly, gives voice to the quiet, intensely personal search for beauty.

Copies of the book are available at the Howell Library's circulation desk.
