lib_writing_book.png Limerick Challenge! Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    1-866-941-8188

The Monmouth County Library and the Jersey Shore Poets will present the 8th annual celebration of poetry for National Poetry Month, Poets Live! this April.  Just for fun, we decided to include limericks this year.  These little poems are fun to read and fun to write.

Limericks have five lines.  Lines one, two and five have 7-9 syllables, and rhyme.  Lines three and four have 5-7 syllables and rhyme with each other.  The rhythm (meter) and 'music' of the lines are consistent.

Submit your original limericks!  Poems will be divided into two categories:  Young People (under 18 yrs of age) and Adult (18 and older). Poets may submit up to three limericks.  Members of the Jersey Shore Poets will review the limericks and select the winners and runners-up to be read by their authors at the formal part of the Poets Live! program in April.  The reviewers will look for technically correct, original, and generally appealing poems.

Send your limericks to: kavagliano@monmouthcountylib.org, or by US Mail to Limerick Challenge, c/o Monmouth County Library, Eastern Branch, 1001 Route 35, Shrewsbury, NJ 07702.  Be sure to put your name, address, age and phone number on each poem.  Poems must be received electronically, or postmarked, by March 1, 2019.  Authors must agree that any work sent to us may be shared with the general public.

Selected limericks will be posted at the Library for all to enjoy. All limerick writers are encouraged to read their poems during the open mic portion of the day. For more information, contact Kim Avagliano (kavagliano@monmouthcountylib.org) at the Library.

Celebrity Activists of the Civil Rights Era

The Civil Rights Movement was a struggle for social justice that took place in a more prominent manner during the 1960s. However, singers and musicians were actively engaged in the struggle long before the full blown Civil Rights Movement.  While the Civil War had officially abolished slavery, it didn't end discrimination against blacks, who continued to endure the devastating effects of racism especailly in the South.  By the mid-20th Century, African Americans had had more than enough prejudice and violence against them.  They, along with many whites, mobilized and began an unprecedented fight for equality that spanned two decades and marked a turn of events under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  It ended segregation in public places and banned empoloyment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin and is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the Civil Rights Movement.

And yet, the struggle for equality continues on.

Today's event will focus briefly on the activism of six singers, dating from the 1930s through the 1960s. These celebrity activists not only enriched Black Culture through their songs and music, but they also had a significant impact on the Civil Rights Movement through their willingness to speak up, stand up, agitate and "Trouble the Waters" to help ensure a better life for their people. These performers are Paul Leroy Robeson, Marian Anderson, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke and Harry Belafonte.

In addition to showcasing some of this tremendous music, this event will also feature local students bringing the "spoken word" of these artists,  as well as other prominent Black writers/poets, such as Phillis Wheatley, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks and bell hooks.

Featured speaker will be Historian Thelma Armstrong.

This program is a cooperatively sponsored event with the Manalapan Arts Council, The Court Street School and the Monmouth County Library.

This program is free for all to attend. Entrance doors open at 12:30pm. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  We request that attendees do not hold or reserve seats for others. Library staff reserves a number of seats for a limited time before performance.

When Isabel meets Edward, both are at a crossroad: He wants to follow his late wife to the grave, and she is ready to give up on love. Thinking she is merely helping Edward's daughter -- who lives far away and has asked her to check in on her nonagenarian dad in New York -- Isabel has no idea that Edward will end up changing her life.

This presentation is an overview of the history and legacy of New Jersey's 200-year embrace of human bondage. New Jersey, sadly, was the last northern state to outlaw slavery. Images and stories of the history of the enslaved in Monmouth County, their often prominent owners, and the local Quaker Abolition movement are examined and illuminated through the lens of the influential early activities at the Shrewsbury and Manasquan Meetings, and others.

Presented by local author and historian Rick Geffken of Farmingdale whose most recent book --- co-authored with George Severini -- was Lost Amusement Parks of the North Jersey Shore.

Celebrating Black History Month

The Justice Journey: From Independence Hall to the March on Washington  by Craig Uplinger

America's Founding documents proclaimed equality and liberty, yet strengthened the institution of slavery.  Tragically, this contradiction resisted every compromise and led to a Civil War.  For a time, Constitutional Amendments eradicated legal barriers between Black and White, but then Southern states built a new wall called Jim Crow.

In 1955, the citizens of Montgomery, Alabama attacked Jim Crow, not with armies or bullets, but with discipline, love and the inspiration of a 26-year-old pastor.  Join us as Craig Uplinger discusses how Martin Luther King, Jr. and the participants in the fight for civil rights provide us lessons that love is greater than war and that lasting resolution can be found above every barrier.

Craig Uplinger is a teacher of United States History at Marlboro High School, and a James Madison Fellow and member of the Phi Alpha Theta National Historical Honor Society.  He will be joined by his wife and daughter, Jney and Mackenzie Uplinger, who have performed locally with the Phoenix and Premier Theatre companies.

In this landmark work of history, the National Book Award—winning author of American Sphinx explores how a group of greatly gifted but deeply flawed individuals–Hamilton, Burr, Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, Adams, and Madison–confronted the overwhelming challenges before them to set the course for our nation.

The United States was more a fragile hope than a reality in 1790. During the decade that followed, the Founding Fathers–re-examined here as Founding Brothers–combined the ideals of the Declaration of Independence with the content of the Constitution to create the practical workings of our government. Through an analysis of six fascinating episodes–Hamilton and Burr’s deadly duel, Washington’s precedent-setting Farewell Address, Adams’ administration and political partnership with his wife, the debate about where to place the capital, Franklin’s attempt to force Congress to confront the issue of slavery and Madison’s attempts to block him, and Jefferson and Adams’ famous correspondence–Founding Brothers brings to life the vital issues and personalities from the most important decade in our nation’s history.

According to the oral history interview given by African American engineer William Jones in 1993, the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth offered unique opportunities for minorities in the 1940s and 50’s.

Thomas E. Daniels a retired African American electrical engineer and SES who’s career spanned over three decades concurred with that statement and elaborated that “Fort Monmouth was known as the Brain Center of the U.S.” and that the post “provided a place where black scientists and engineers could find jobs and advance their careers.”

Although these opportunities set precedence, it did not however immune the Fort’s African American employees from the culture of discrimination and segregation that permeated this period in our country’s history however.

Join us as we explore the experiences of some of Monmouth County’s own “Hidden Figures” with a multimedia presentation by Melissa Ziobro.

Melissa Ziobro is currently the Specialist Professor of Public History at Monmouth University, teaching courses to include Introduction to Public History, Oral History, and Museums and Archives Management. Her service to the University includes administration of the Monmouth Memories Oral History Program.

Melissa serves on the Executive Board of Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region and as the editor for New Jersey Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, a joint venture of the NJ Historical Commission, Rutgers University Libraries, and Monmouth University. She worked as a command historian at the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command, Fort Monmouth, NJ from 2004-2011
