AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, an AARP Foundation program, helps low- to moderate-income taxpayers by assisting with tax services and ensuring they receive applicable tax credits and deductions. This service is available free to taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older.

A limited number of returns will be filed, depending on the number of volunteers available to complete returns within listed times, on days that the Library Branch is open.

This year, certain documentation is required to be with taxpayer before a return will be started.  Please see documentation list (below) or on the Library flyers.

AARP/Tax Aide Volunteers will be in Eastern Branch Library, Shrewsbury  on select days and times (when the Library is open), beginning Friday, February 3 through Thursday, April 13, 2017.

Mondays: 9:30am to 7:30pm   Tuesdays: 9:30am to 12Noon  Wednesdays: 1 pm to 7:30pm

Please bring Affordable Care Act Documentation Requirements:

  • A month by month listing showing for each person on the return, which months they had insurance and which months they were uninsured
  • Information to determine if the reason the person was not insured qualifies for an exemption
  • Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) if an exemption was granted by the Healthcare Marketplace/Exchange

rec_paintpalette02 Art Exhibit: Jazz in a Suitcase: Paintings by Massimo Chioccia and Olga Tsarkova Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    1-866-941-8188

Fresh from a recent exhibition at the Jazz Gallery in NYC, the artwork of Massimo Chioccia and Olga Tsarkova will be on display at the Eastern Branch for the month of March.  Their exciting compositions depict iconic figures among jazz musicians, such as Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker and Duke Ellington.  The artists make use of paint and enamel on canvas or on sheet metal to create portraits of brilliant color, kinetic energy and movement.

Their work has been exhibited at numerous international jazz festivals, including the Casa di Jazz in Rome (2012), the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam (2013), and recently the 40th Anniversary of Umbria Jazz in Perugia (2013). Many historic clubs, such as the Alexanderplatz Jazz Club of Rome, the Blue Note of Milan and Birdland of NYC, have also displayed their paintings.  In 2014, a Chioccia/Tsarkova work was chosen for the cover of a book celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival.

Olga Tsarkova was born in Moscow and attended the National School of Art - Surikov. She completed her studies in Rome at the Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating at the top of her class.  Massimo Chioccia was born in a small village in Umbria and graduated with honors from the Accademia di Belle Arte Lorenzo da Viterbo.

For the opening reception, a visit with the artists from Italy via Skype is planned for Sunday, March 5th between 2 and 4 pm.

See more of their work at: http://www.chioccia-tsarkova.it/galleria.html

Join Fred Lehotay and The Ragtimers for a “Salute to St. Patrick’s Day” concert. The Ragtimers will perform traditional Irish American music along with their traditional repertoire that we all know and love.

The Ragtimers include Gary Nokes on bass, Bob Eslter on guitar, Tom Rittenhouse on banjo and band director Fred Lehotay on saxophone. The Ragtimers have been performing all the old-time sentimental melodies and rousing ragtime favorites in the tri-state area since 1968. The quartet is keeping alive the foot-tapping, hand-clapping, great songs of a bygone era.  They perform regularly during the summer months in Seaside Park and Avon-by-the-Sea.

Come join us for this fun, old-fashioned, family entertainment for all ages! Following the performance, light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Howell Library, whose support makes this program possible.

Short Stories Thru the Decades

A Silver Dish by Saul Bellow (1978)

Saul Bellow's story "A Silver Dish" illustrates the skill of one of the greatest American authors of the 20th century. The story spans a period from the middle of the Great Depression to the mid-1980s, showing the changes that time renders in both society and in one man's life.  The main character, Woody Selbst , is one of Bellow's finest creations.  A lonesome, successful businessman, Woody reminisces about the circumstances under which his father, a con man and thief, caused him to lose his scholarship to a seminary school, an act that redirected his entire life.

A Different Lie by Derek Haas

Haas builds characters who are complicated, memorable, and sharply drawn.  His spare, lean prose wastes no words. Haas develops a powerful and compellling voice and spends his scant 200 pages building suspense, creating atmosphere, and telling a compelling yarn. An unflinching little gem of a story: violent, dark, and unrelentingly entertaining.

World War I and American Art will transform the current understanding of art made during the war and in its wake. The war's impact on art and culture was enormous, as nearly all of the era's major American artists interpreted their experiences, opinions and perceptions of the conflict through their work.

World War I and American Art follows the narrative of the war itself and show how artists chronicled their experiences of the unfolding war as it crept closer to home and then involved them directly as soldiers, relief workers, political dissenters, and official war artists.World War I also unfolded when modernist art was being digested, adapted, and transformed by the American art world. Images made during the war reveal American artists in transition, using more experimental forms to capture the apocalyptic tenor of the conflict but also drawing on a straightforward realist manner to make the human experience accessible to their audience.

This lecture is presented by Laurel McLaughlin, art historian at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts which is currently exhibiting World War I and American Art.

The workshop takes you on an inspiring journey through audio-slide presentation:

  • Capture the spirit of traditional Chinese culture and the beliefs that are the foundation of traditional Chinese cultural forms, including dance, music, martial arts and education.
  • Experience the gentle elegance and rich expressiveness of classical Chinese dance - pioneers of many other art forms, including acrobatics, Chinese opera and Olympic gymnastics flips.
  • Feel the joy of the distinct Chinese sound of ancient instruments with thousands of years of history.
  • Discover the true China you've never known.

Grieving is a process of learning how to live in a changed world. When someone we love has died, or a relationship has ended, we are challenged to relearn how to be with ourselves, our families and our friends. We are faced with coping and managing painful feelings, and creating new systems of meaning that allow us to live with joy and purpose in spite of our losses.  Meeting with other bereaved individuals who are coping with similar life circumstances helps to reduce isolation and increase hopefulness.

VNAHG Bereavement Support Group meets the SECOND and FOURTH Monday of each month, February through April, 2017 from 11:00 to 12:00 PM.  If you have any questions, please call Janet Freed at 845-642-0935, Chaplain and Bereavement Counselor, VNA Hospice.

People do not always understand what annuities they currently own.  The goal of this program would be to offer a working understanding of how your annuities/investments actual work, and to review the following points:

What are types of  Annuities?    Why does my broker hate Annuities?    How does an Annuity work?

Can an Annuity lower my taxes?       What is the danger of purchasing an Annuity?

This program will be presented by International Planning Alliance's SVP Mark Lowe, a Certified Financial Planner with over 30 years of experience providing conservative financial advice to his clients.  No registration is necessary.

This program was originally scheduled for January 2017.

The 45-minute documentary will be followed by a question and answer period with Ethan Andersen of Compassion & Choices.
