Once a limb of a tree . . . washed out to sea
weathered by the calms and the storms of the ocean waters.
Carried by the ebb and flow of the tides
on to the Jersey shore sands where dried by the heat of the sun.
Harvested after the days of summer end,
carrying all the mysteries and energies of these vast experiences
within each piece, into a new beginning.

Stop in and enjoy the Word Paintings— the idea of words being magical, empowering, and inspiring to live with as a form of art—of local artist Vincent DiGerlando.  The artist believes that this form of art is empowering as well as playful; inspiring, and nourishing to the mind, spirit, and soul.  (On display in the Wall Library display cabinet.)

misc_usflag 6:30 PM  -  8:00 PM The Star-Spangled Songbook Remind Me about this Event   Tell a Friend
    Contact:    732-449-8877

The Star-Spangled Songbook is a musical celebration of the great American composers and lyricists who together crafted a body of work that is uniquely American, from Tin Pan Alley to Broadway, from jazz standards to the songs that won the war.  In an age when hardly anything is "Made in America" anymore, the Star-Spangled Songbook is 100% made in the U.S.A. Every song is a musical journey through the lives of the people we call the "Greatest Generation" - those Americans who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II, as well as those whose productivity within the war's home front made a decisive material contribution to the war effort.

Singer, musician, and songwriter Dave Deluca performs the Star-Spangled Songbook which includes jazz standards, Broadway tunes, and patriotic standards of the 30s, 40s, and 50s.  In December 2011, Dave starred in the Count Basie Theatre's "5th Annual Sinatra Birthday Bash".

What makes a good movie?  Is it one full of action, comedy, romance, fantasy or one that has a message which may give the viewer a deeper meaning of what the movie is really about? Literary elements or devices, when interwoven together, create memorable movie masterpieces for all to remember.

Parable:  A parable is something used in literature, art and film to signify a meaning that is not literal.  Through this artistic device, films can reveal important secrets about the true reality of the world in which we live.

Two imprisoned men (Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman) bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.  A parable to maintain one’s sense of self worth when placed in a hopeless situation. Most of us obey the institution then depend on it, scared to change our life-style. However, we can choose redemption if we want even if it’s the Shawshank Prison.

1939 is considered by film critics and historians to be the single greatest year in motion picture history. The sheer number of outstanding films created in this particular year is truly remarkable. Consider this list of movies: Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Hound of the Baskervilles, Wuthering Heights. This the seventy-fifth anniversary of this year in filmmaking. The Monmouth County Library Classic Movie Series is showing a selection of these films in recognition of this epic year in cinematic history.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Directed by Sidney Lanfield. Starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Wendy Barrie, Lionel Atwill, and John Carradine.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is based on a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel and was the first of fourteen films featuring the detective duo of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson. The pair are asked to investigate the mysterious death of Sir Henry Baskerville and the possible link between his demise and the dreaded family curse involving a vicious killer hound.  80 minutes, (c)20th Century Fox

A movie for the “Literary Elements” Summer Reading Program

Named the best sci-fi film of all time by the American Film Institute, the movie is based on Arthur C. Clarke’s story, The Sentinel. A space voyage to Jupiter erupts in disaster when the ship's computer goes mad. With assistance from special-effects expert Douglas Trumbull, director Stanley Kubrick spent over two years meticulously creating the most “realistic” depictions of outer space ever seen, greatly advancing cinematic technology for a story expressing grave doubts about technology itself.  Starring Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester and Daniel Richter. 139 minutes

Useful feedback can go a long way to help you become a better writer, but how do you separate the helpful from the unhelpful? Workshops focus on three important skills every writer should acquire:

  1. The ability to provide useful feedback for others
  2. The ability to seek (and accept) feedback
  3. The ability to distinguish between useful and not so useful feedback.

If you’d like to share your own work for constructive feedback, see www.monmouthwriters.com for details of what to expect, as well as format/printing instructions. Critique workshops will take place on the 4th Saturday of February, June and October
